This Integrated Alliances LinkedIn Prole InfoGuide v3.0 arms you with what you MUSTKNOW to create an attractive, attention getting LinkedIn prole that brings you business.

It previews ground breaking material from the upcoming Rock The World with LinkedInv3.0 book due in early 2015. Its predecessor, Rock The World with Your OnlinePresence, cemented Mike ONeil & Lori Ruff as The LinkedIn Rockstars.

So, re up a word processor and lets get to work! Use it to craft the text you copy/pasteinto LinkedIn. LinkedIn has no spell checking capability and the tiny windows make dataentry difcult, so the word processor is your good friend.

    TIP

Visit www.RockLinkedIn.comfor an easy, ll-in-the-blanksLinkedIn prole worksheet! It requires registration, but youllalso nd lots of helpful video-based, instructor-led training andadditional resources while you are there. Its FREE!

While you are at it, re up LinkedIn as well. We suggest you open 2 Browser TABs or windows, one in EDITPROFILE Mode and one in VIEW PROFILE Mode.

Toggle between them as you craft your prole and test how it looks. Youll be making a lot of edits, so wesuggest you adjust your LinkedIn Settings to Turn OFF your activity broadcasts until the prole work is done.

FIT IN & STAND OUT Principle

    1) FIT IN with keywords to get found in searches and2) Your STAND OUT style gets you selected from lists

Your LinkedIn prole Header and Summary are central to the Fit In, Stand Out Principle. They are above thefold and everyone that visits your prole will see this information.

    BIGTIP

LinkedIns formatting options are limited to ALL CAPS, specialkeyboard characters (~ > | #) and certain special symbols.Copy and paste these from your word processor into LinkedIn.

Try these characters: * Be sure to view your prole and test it after each change!

PhotoLinkedIn prole photos must be a headshot picture of just you. Its an exquisite place to show some STYLE.Uploading and cropping are easy. Look at the iPhone app to take/upload a picture. The nal picture is 450x450pixels (enlarged) so details matter.

HeadlineLike a headline in the newspaper, your LinkedIn prole headline should reallygrab their attention. Dont accept the default that LinkedIn provides like Title atCompany. Use compelling, colorful words, key phrases and special formattingcharacters () to attract viewers.

Answer this question - Why should people choose you instead of someone else?

SummaryThe Summary is a conversation between you and the viewer - its FROM you vs ABOUT you and its NEVERwritten in the 3rd person. Who are you? What are you LIKE? How do you help others? How can they help you?

Include current, relevant information in a high-level overview. Be interesting and a little personal with limitedhistorical info. End it with a Call To Action about what you want them to do, like Call me at 303-555-1212.

ExperienceList all your relevant paid and volunteer positions since college to create the most opportunities. Careerprogression at the same company? Use the highest title and include job progression in the job description. DoNOT upload your resume as it will cause massive, unnecessary editing. Limit the use of statistics and list yearsonly for dates. Move positions around if your most important ones are not at the top (grab/drop).

For each position, answer the following:

    1. What does the company do?2. Who do they do it for? (customers)3. Where do they do it? (territory)4. What was your role and what made you special?

EducationList more than just your college experience.Include business training (i.e.,

management), technical training (i.e., Cisco), and professional training (i.e., DaleCarnegie). Its OK to list your High School if you desire. Use years only and includeActivities and Societies if you were involved.

Proper formatting in some sections creates nice clickable links so use single words orshort phrases separated by commasand be sure to View it as the public sees it.

Example Commuter Student Association, Phi Delta Sigma Honor Society

InterestsWhat do that you truly enjoy? Show your human side, include some of your professional and personalinterests. Proper formatting creates links so use single words or short phrases separated by commas.

Example Concerts, Drag Racing, Football, Music, Pink Floyd, Skiing, James Taylor, Boston Legal

Personal DetailsOnly 1st level connections can see this Personal Details information. Include a birthday if you like, the year isoptional. Your marital status is best left blank.

Advice for Contacting YouIf youre open for business you need to let people know how to best reach you. This is a great place to list

a phone number and an email address. Include some instructions on who should reach out to you or on how/when they would best reach out.

Web SitesList 3 web sites or URLs to specic web addresses, even if they are on the same site.Rename the label on each link to something more attractive. To do so, select Other asthe label name rather than My Website and LinkedIn lets you add customized link text,i.e., TRW Web Site, Job Openings, or Our Products.

Rich MediaLinkedIn provides a number of places for you to insert what they call rich media. In the LinkedIn world thismeans upload a document (PDF, DOC), upload a Presentation (PowerPoint), upload a Picture or LINK to anexternal Video that will actually play right within LinkedIn.

The Link capability works for many otherthings as well, but you must test them andremember that its best to stay on the beatenpath a bit (YouTube, Vimeo).

Add rich media to your Summary section or toany of your Experience or Education entries. You can display up to ve items in two rowsand you may link to more with theSee More button.

Note the dimensions are different for entriesput in Row 1 (wide, 16x9) vs. Row 2 (4x3).You must design the images accordingly.

Dont cut your head off unintentionally!

RecommendationsStrive for at least 10 recommendations realizing you may need to ask for 25-30 to get thatmany. The kudos that come from customers and superiors are usually best. Ask them todescribe a project with some specics (numbers) and highlight your positive contribution.Make it about 3-4 sentences.

TIP: Get a Recommendation by GIVING a Recommendation to Someone Else!

SkillsSkills are famous, for better or worse, because of the LinkedIn Endorsements that greet prole visitors andeverybody hates it. Skills themselves are a great idea and you may list up to 50 as single words or sets ofwords. Think keywords when picking your skills. People will be endorsing these, perhaps even people youdont know.

Sections You May AddOther Sections that LinkedIn lets you include on your prole include Organizations (formerly Groups and

Associations), Causes, Certications, Courses, Languages, Patents, Publications and more are being addedall the time. Be sure to provifde both full names and ACRONYMS whenever possible

LinkedIn GroupsYou may join as many as 50 LinkedIn Groups, we suggest you joinat least 25. Join large groups in your region, your industry, or yourprofession. Join groups that cater to your PERSONAL interests as well.
