Foresta Lumina

P arc de la Gorge de Coaticook, the top tourist attraction in the Eastern Townships, is crisscrossed by dozens of trai ls and boasts North America’s

longest suspension bridge. It welcomes 100,000 visitors every year.

Wanting to attract a larger and more diverse group of evening visitors, the park’s team commissioned Moment Factory to create Foresta Lumina, an i l luminated night trai l through the forest. As the foundation for the enchanted world they

would design for visitors, Moment Factory’s creative team took inspiration from the legendary characters found in folk tales from Quebec and around the world. After dark, visitors explore the park’s charms at their own pace, experiencing a scenography featuring l ighting effects and video mapping accompanied by an original soundtrack. Al l along the 2 km “garden of wishes” trai l – where visitors pick up a magical stone and make a wish on it as they toss it into the water at the “enchanted shore” – visitors wil l meet fascinating beings that lead them into a ful ly immersive adventure.

A Multimedia Experience in the ForestMost of today’s mult imedia experiences are found in urban sett ings. In this case, Moment Factory faced the chal lenge of designing and building one in a natural sett ing. The team travel led to the site and soaked up the surroundings. The forest and its spaces, topography, detours and mysteries became the canvas for the experience. By adapting their work to the environment in the most natural way possible, and by concealing the technical apparatus, the creative team worked to ensure that visitors would see and hear nothing but magic.

Moment Factory created custom elements for each of the trai l ’s zones: perforated, backl it metal panels inscribed with descriptions of the main characters, small l ighting units designed to suggest the presence of fair ies in the forest, a transparent screen used for a subtle projection in a clearing, video mapping that brings a dead tree back to l i fe.

The forest sett ing has no l ight pol lution, making it possible to work with more f inely cal ibrated l ighting effects. The technical apparatus required for the experience needed to be sol id and rel iable for use summer after summer. The creative team, with some 30 members, also made a point of drawing on local talent by working with a variety of art isans and suppliers based in the area.

SGM delivers light modernisation for Palace of Arts

in Budapest

59

T he Palace of Arts in Budapest ( local ly named Művészetek Palotája and abbreviated Müpa) is one of the most prestigious concert hal ls in Central and

Eastern Europe, designed by leading architect Gábor Zoboki in 2005.

Its previous colour-changing l ighting system, instal led a decade ago, had become outdated and did not provide the deep, highly saturated colouration desired by the architect. Therefore, with TriGránit Management Ingatlankezelö és Hasznosító Kft. on board as investor, a tender was init iated for modernisation of the façade l ighting system, which SGM won by engaging with local distr ibutor, Zaj System House Trading.

Their executive director, Tamás Fazekas, explains: “As this is a stand-alone bui lding on the banks of the Danube, which is bordered by one of the busiest bridges in the city, all the façades are of equal importance and the l ighting system needs to concentrate on each of them without any exclusion.”

59

6060

Different l ighting manufacturers participated in the tender bid and thus a shoot-out was held last autumn when the products were put through their paces. Zaj System House submitted a complete projection design for the shoot-out in cooperation with László Vértessy, owner of T issy Lighting Ltd. “The dominance of the SGM P-5 was unquestionable from the beginning,” says Tamás Fazekas. “No other product had such powerful output, which was very important because of the high level of surrounding street l ighting and l ight pol lution coming from different sources.”

Zaj System House, celebrating its 20 th anniversary as an SGM distr ibutor, is accustomed to instal l ing permanent outdoor l ighting systems using SGM solutions.

After the off icial order was placed for the P-5 wash l ights, the removal of the former f ixtures, the modif ication of the structures, the design and f itt ing of the new electrical system, the instal lat ion, sett ing and testing were al l executed by Zaj System House’s team, led by József Zsemberi, one of the company owners.

90 P-5 f ixtures were used for the extensive façade i l lumination — 48 of which were custom-made in si lver, to be placed on 5- and 8-metre high columns (2 or 4 units per column), with the smaller shape and size of the P-5s over their predecessors creating a clear benefit. The

61

remaining SGM wash l ights are placed on terraces, roofs and stands in the garden — three pieces are even mounted at 18-metre height in the atr ium, which were instal led by industrial ‘alpinists’, since no one else could achieve this height. The objective was achieved by introducing the small, elegant, custom colour P-5, with its high output, low power consumption; this offers different projection angles and fulf i ls the architect’s original dream to turn the complete bui lding into any deep and saturated, or l ight pastel colour desired.

“As the old system could not produce suff icient l ight power in deep, saturated colours, in recent years the bui lding has mostly been i l luminated in white or a very l ight colour such as yel low. The new possibi l i t ies provided by the enormous power of the P-5’s match the creativity of the architects and operators,” Tamás Fazekas explains.

“We can emphasise that al l the expectations of the look, colour saturation and homogeneity have been met, and that the cl ient and the architect are satisf ied.”

Zaj System House has already moved onto further new instal lat ions with SGM equipment, where among other projects, an outdoor stage is being instal led with various pieces of the new Q-7 and the SixPack bl inder. ■

T he Singapore sports hub is one of the most iconic buildings in Singapore. Located in the heart of the city, on the

waterfront and developed on a 35-hectare site, the centrepiece of Premier Park includes a 55,000 seat Olympic stadium – the largest ultra-lightweight tropical dome in the sporting world, with a sliding roof that l ights up at night and doubles up as a projection screen to create the most dramatic effects for night events.

The Dome LightingThe stadium will give out a welcoming and majestic ambience by its scale and a relatively strong light intensity as compared to its surrounding environment. The top retractable roof is the key element of the stadium lighting. Each ETFE air pil low frame is considered as a pixel and the whole roof can be transformed into a huge low-resolution display screen. The lighting is done through a RGBW LED lighting system. The stadium will change its garment according to the occasion. Singapore’s National Flag wil l perhaps be one of the most preferred graphics for this roof. The lower part of the stadium is l it in basic architectural white l ight, which serves at the same time as the functional l ighting inside the concourse. The dome shape will be highlighted with RGB led fixtures integrated within the scupper of the stadium.

The Landscape LightingThe different l ight ambiences of the landscape take into consideration the different activities and create l ighting hierarchies to guide people into the various spaces, highlighting some elements while leaving others more discreet. Emphasis has been laid on the principle axis, which anchors the stadium to its landscape.

Lighting for landscape around the Stadium is marked by the l ighting of the canopies extending out from the stadium, creating luminous surfaces that anchor the stadium to its landscape. In contrast to the stadium, the grass areas and the roof gardens are more discreet. Here only the natural elements such as the trees are highlighted giving a more passive and romantic mood. As we move away from the stadium towards the promenade, the l ights gravitate to lower luminance levels. Many light points create a cosy and friendly environment. The Main Entrance is l it up to meet functional requirements as well as to create a grand yet playful and welcoming atmosphere.

The retail and other façades are l it up by the l ight coming from the interiors of the buildings. The exterior is l it with warm white l ight creating cosy and convivial ambiance around the inner circulation walkway.

The ambience for the landscape lighting along the promenade area is more discreet and serene. Lighting has been provided for the trees along the axis.

Thus creating discreet soft ambience much more relaxed. Here again the elements fall ing on the main axis have been highlighted. In order to put an accent on these elements contrast has been created and the general luminance levels have been kept low in the surrounding areas. Along the main drive way lighting has been provided for some trees on one side of the road thus creating a rhythm and giving a perspective view of the ring. The car park area is l it in functional l ighting to ensure that visitors have a sense of safety.

K egoyaondo Bypass in Hiroshima Prefecture’s Kure City opened in

March 2013. I t is a 3.9km sectional bypass put in place with the objectives of rel ieving the chronic traff ic congestion in the vicinity of Ondo Br idge and ensuring an emergency transport road.

The or iginal Ondo Br idge used to be the only overpass l ink ing the Kure City mainland with the Kurahashi Is land. No.2 Ondo Br idge forms par t of a whole new bypass route. I t is located roughly 350m north of Ondo Br idge and it is an arch bridge boasting a length of 492m and an arch-span of 280m, mak ing it the 4th longest arch type in Japan. I t has been painted vermil l ion in keeping with Ondo Br idge. This colour is now a famil iar symbol of the Ondo Straight, a famous tourist destination. The new bridge’s design is one that takes into account a need for harmony with the scener y in terms of its colour and shape.

High-output LED f loodlights (LEDioc FL400) were f inal ly chosen to i l luminate the br idge, after consideration of power conser vation and per formance requirements. Before instal lation, the LED l ighting f ixtures were taken to the site and had their posit ions and directionality repeated adjusted while obser ving actual br ightness levels and display proper ties before mak ing a f inal decision. Care was taken to avoid an excessive br ightness, and to have the br idge profi le melt into the night scener y by using a simple l ighting scheme. Meanwhile, for the Kegoya Viaduct where the bypass begins, LED l ighting f ixtures were f itted to the side rai l ings instead of using tradit ional pole-top streetl ights.

The concept was to use l ight to act as a visual aide to safety guide travellers through the cur ves, incl ines and straight sections along the road. Thorough simulations and on-site adjustments were also carr ied out here in order to create a safe and comfor table visual environment. Only after this process was completed were the white LED rai l ing l ighting f ixtures instal led. Warm incandescent-white LED rai l ing l ighting f ixtures were used for the pedestr ian section. LED l ighting f ixtures were also used for the l ighting in Ondo Tunnel. The use of low power consumption LED l ighting now contr ibutes to power savings and offers a pleasant travell ing experience at night. ■

T he California Depar tment of Transportation (Caltrans)

recently completed its LED l ighting overhaul to the East Span of the iconic San Francisco – Oak land Bay Br idge. After three years of testing and designing custom fixtures, Musco Lighting provided an energy-eff icient LED l ighting solution featuring Cree® (Nasdaq: CREE) XLamp® XM-L LEDs to i l luminate the picturesque suspension tower and bridge deck . In total, the br idge now employs nearly 1,600 custom-built LED l ight f ixtures leveraging more than 51,500 high-per formance LEDs, l ighting the entire East Span at an estimated energy savings of 50 percent and l i fetime of 15 years — more than seven times longer than previously deployed l ighting technologies. “ We wanted the East Span of the Bay Br idge to not only be aesthetical ly pleasing, but also cost-effective and functional for travelers,” said Andrew Fremier, deputy executive director at Bay Area Toll Authority. “ The new LED l ighting solution by Musco using Cree’s LED technology truly improves the way residents and visitors experience the Bay Br idge, providing cr isp, br i l l iant l ight for al l who cross it , while deliver ing energy eff iciency and payback for years.” Designed to withstand the greatest of ear thquakes, while st i l l providing a one-of-a-k ind experience for travelers, the new bridge required long-lasting, eff icient and user-fr iendly l ighting for the new 2,047-foot East Span. After deeming a metal hal ide l ight source as an unsuitable solution for this application, Musco drew on its experience as an innovative leader in l ighting solutions to deliver uniform l ight with glare control using compact, custom designed f ixtures, pleasing both bridge architects and engineers. Cree’s XM-L LED l ight source provided the unique combination of high eff icacy in a compact footprint that enabled Musco to reduce f ixture size by reducing the number of LEDs and optics in the system.

7474

“As LEDs evolved and continued to become more eff icient, we knew the technology would al low us to develop a l ight f ixture that could meet the br idge’s meticulous design requirements with no compromises,” said Jeff Rogers, vice president of developmental sales, Musco Lighting. “Cree delivered the per formance, rel iabil ity and design f lexibi l ity for us to create a custom designed solution. Once we demonstrated our custom solution using Cree’s XM-L LEDs, Caltrans and their design par tners believed in our vision.” In addition to the roadway and suspension cables, the East Span now features custom, optical ly directed Musco LED l ight f ixtures along the bridge deck , bike and pedestr ian paths, tunnel entrance and self-anchored suspension tower. As a result , Bay Br idge travelers benefit from a uniform and balanced bright l ight, delivered using precise optics that guide the l ight exactly where it is needed to help el iminate l ight pollution and glare. Boasting a long-term warranty, the LED f ixtures also help improve the dr iver experience by el iminating the need for frequent maintenance to replace or repair l ights. “ We’re proud to work with companies l ike Musco that have a reputation for deliver ing high-quality LED l ighting systems. Through the pursuit of an inspired l ighting design and its confidence in Cree, Musco was able to create a l ighting solution for this unique challenge,” said Paul Thieken, director of marketing, LED Components, Cree. “ This process substantiates our commitment to relentless innovation and proves that pushing the boundaries for LED l ight output and eff icacy can accelerate our customers’ abil ity to develop cost-effective, high-output LED l ighting products.” ■
