Organised by:
Project Goals
To complete the marine Natura 2000 Network in Spain, through the scientific and social knowledge
To provide management and monitoring guidelines for each proposed areas.
To contribute on updating the Habitats and Birds Directives and regional convention annexes
To promote the participation of all involved parties
To raise civil society awareness, putting in value our marine richness, and
learning about socioeconomic impacts

Basic Project
Areas studied to be protected:
• 10 proposed Sites of Community Importance (pSCI): 4,4 M ha • 39 Special Protection Areas (SPA): 4,9 M ha

Studied areas
Baseline information: 49 marine areas identified.
Biogeographic representation:
Atlantic region: 3 new areas studied Mediterranean region: 5 new areas studied Macaronesian region: 2 new areas studied
European Directives representation of the habitats and species:
• Deep habitats and pelagic species
• 39 Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas
Offshore areas (just one area declared at that moment)

Habitat studies
Marine habitat studies require very specific methodology: oceanographic, bathymetric, biological, geomorphologic, …
N2000 habitats studied: reefs, posidonia beds, sandbanks, submarine structures formed by leaking gases, sea caves…
OSPAR habitats studied: coral gardens, cold water reefs, seamounts, oceanic ridges, sea-pen and burrowing megafauna communities…
