SUMMARY
A gold exploration program consisting of 288 soil samples
and a VLF-EM survey was carried out over the Midlothian Township
Property between September 1996 and August 1997.
The results revealed four soil samples with anomalous gold
contents. Except for arsenic, all gold pathfinder elements were
at or below analytical detection limits.
The VLF survey outlined several weak, west to west-northwest
striking conductive trends across the grid. One of these may
define the trace of the Larder Lake Break. Other anomalies are
associated with surficial features.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Since the overburden in the vicinity of the gold and arsenic
soil anomalies is quite shallow, it is recommended to use
trenching or power stripping to expose them. An alternative would
be to test the anomalies with several short drill holes.

INTRODUCTION
Between September 1996 and August 1997 a gold exploration
program consisting of soil sampling and VLF-EM surveying was
carried out by the writer on the Midlothian Township Property.
Two hundred and eighty-eight samples of the Bl soil horizon
(where possible) were collected using a garden spade at 20 metre
intervals on 200 metre-spaced grid lines.
The VLF-EM survey was completed at 20 metre stations on 100
metre spaced lines using a Crone "Radem" unit tuned to Cutler,
Maine at 24.0 KHz.
LOCATION, ACCESS, and CLAIM STATUS
The Midlothian Township Property is located 25 kilometres
southwest of the village of Matachewan, Ontario (Figure 1).
Access to the claim block is quite good. The former United
Asbestos Mine access road from Matachewan passes through the
centre of the claims.
The property consists of four contiguous claims numbered
L-1193847, L-1200373, L-1203881, and L-1203886 covering 9 units
or approximately 145 hectares. Claim L-1200373 is held by the
writer while the other three are registered to Dr. Dale Pyke.
PREVIOUS WORK
The property has been part of larger claim blocks in the
past and ties directly onto leased claims of the now closed
United Asbestos Mine. In 1963 an airborne EM-Mag survey flown for
- f
\ x

Laroma-Midlothian Mines by Canadian Aero Mineral Surveys in
Midlothian Township and over the current claims. No conductors
were outlined.
In 1969, Canadian Johns Manville Company Ltd., on the basis
of an airborne magnetic survey did a geological interpretation of
a large part of the area around Lloyd Lake, the eastern portion
of which extended over to include the area south of and around
Larry Lake.
Geological mapping in the immediate area has been reported
by Marshall (1947), Bright (1970), Kretschmar and Kretschmar
(1986), and O'Hanley (1988).
Linecutting and geological mapping was carried out on the
claim block in 1996 by Ms. K. Gunnison and Dr. D. Pyke.
SOIL GEOCHEMISTRY SURVEY
The soil sampling program was carried out in two phases. In
September 1996, 178 samples were collected from the eastern
portion of the claim block. The positive results of that program
prompted the collection of 110 additional samples from the
western portion of the grid in August 1997.
The samples were collected at 20 metre intervals at 200
metre line spacings using a garden spade. Every effort was made
to collect the Bl soil horizon, although this material was
unavailable at about 3 percent of the sample sites. No samples
were collected in swampy terrain or along the main access road.
Eastern Analytical Laboratories of Springdale, NF carried
4
out analyses for both years. After drying and sieving, the -80
mesh fraction was analyzed using atomic absorption (Au) and ICP
(Ag, Al, As, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, La,
Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sr, Ti, V, W, and Zn)
techniques. Analytical results are included in Appendix A.
Although the geochemical package included 30 elements plus
gold, only arsenic returned results that could be statistically
evaluated. All other gold pathfinder elements (Ag, Bi, Sb, W)
were at or below detection limits. Other elements such as Cu, Pb,
Zn, Ni, and Cr, though exhibiting anomalous trends, will not be
discussed as they are not applicable to this gold oriented
exploration program.
A histogram was generated for arsenic to determine outliers
so they could be edited from the dataset prior to calculating the
mean and standard deviation. The anomaly threshold level was then
set at approximately the mean plus two standard deviations. This
value was used as the lowest contour interval plotted. For
arsenic the contours used were 20, 50, 100, and 200 ppm. For
gold, any value above the 5 ppb detection limit was considered
anomalous.
Gold Distribution
Four samples returned values higher than the 5 ppb detection
limit; the highest being 18 ppb at LO+OOW, 3+60S. A NW trending
linear anomaly extends from L2+OOW, 1+80N to L4+OOW, 2+80N. The
other anomaly is a spot high at L16+OOW, 0+60N.
5
Arsenic Distribution
Nineteen samples (6.61; of total) were above the anomaly
threshold of 20 ppm As; the highest being 423 ppm at L8+OOW,
3+20N. Two NW trending discontinuous anomalies are evident. The
first anomaly, which extends from LO+OOW, 0+60S to L14+OOW, 2+60N
consists of mostly single station highs, ranging up to a maximum
of 63 ppm As. The second, subparallel trend can be traced from
LO+OOW, 1+20N to L8+OOW, 3+20N.
A possible third, north trending anomaly occurs along
L20+OOW, where five of sixteen samples (3^) are above the
anomaly threshold. This line also has very high Cr and Ni
contents, in part reflecting the komatiite flows outcropping in
this area.
VLF-EM SURVEY
Approximately 753 dip readings were taken at 20 metre
intervals over the entire grid using a Crone "Radem" unit tuned
to Cutler, Maine at 24.0 kHz. The survey was conducted by the
writer over two days in August 1997. The data was plotted at
1:5000 scale.
At least 11 (A-K) weak to moderate strength anomalies were
outlined; most trending due west to west-northwest across the
grid. Three short strike length anomalies (C, G, K) are oriented
in a northeasterly trend. The most pronounced anomaly (E) is
associated with a swampy area under and to the west of Larry
Lake. Anomalies A and B are two subparallel conductors that are
6
associated with a probable peridotite body on claim L-1193847.
Anomalies I and J are also subparallel and can be traced
discontinuously across the entire property. Both may mark the
trace of the Larder Lake Break, although I closely follows the
main access road and may be related to a bedrock-overburden
interface. Anomalies D, F, and H are short strike length
conductors ^200 m) of probable surficial origin.
