Today, the world faces many challengesof addressing health issues due to many newstrange diseases, which puts pressure on theinternational community to produce medicinesto prevent the diseases from spreadingworldwide. Many related tasks are underwayto address the global health issues.

In Myanmar, the Ministry of Health istrying to improve its public health care in orderthat the people enjoy longevity and surviveillnesses. At the same time, it is stepping up itsgiving health talks, taking disease preventivemeasures, and giving quick treatment even inrural areas.

Now, medical research has become one ofthe priorities in the health field. Medical researchis carried out constantly and on a wider scale.Findings of medical research are compiled intopapers which are then submitted to symposiums.

Findings of research on medical scienceand health care contribute to medical treatment, prescription of medicines and preventivemeasures against diseases. As a result of medicalresearch, sufferers from some diseases cansurvive the diseases longer, and new effectiveapproaches have been sought.

Research needs labour, time and funds.Laboratory-scale research, scale-up productionand mass production or commercial-scaleproduction are to be put at the centre stage stepby step. Research was done increasingly toproduce Hepatitis B vaccine (Purified Hbs Ag).Now, a Hepatitis B vaccine factory has beenestablished, and the vaccine is distributednationwide.

Medical researchers are therefore to workharder than ever to achieve more findings, submit them for discussion, and applysatisfactory results broadly.

Could chemicals in flood waters harmBarrier Reef?

QUEENSLAND, 9 Jan—After heavy raincaused hundreds of thousands of kilometersof flooding, environmentalists are nowconcerned about run-off containingfertilizers, pesticides and sediment thatcould negatively affect the Great BarrierReef off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

Queensland, home to large sugar andcoal production industries, borders the 2,600km of coastline where the Great BarrierReef is found. The large agriculturalpresence in the state could be creatingalgal blooms that could cut the amount ofsunlight reaching the coral turning it white,an effect called bleaching.

Rick Smith, executive director ofEnvironmental Defence Canada, toldCanada AM that the potential for anenvironmental disaster is huge.

Scientists construct synthetic proteinsthat sustain life

PRINCETON, 9 Jan—In a ground-breaking achievement that could helpscientists “build” new biological systems,Princeton University scientists haveconstructed for the first time artificialproteins that enable the growth of livingcells.

The team of researchers createdgenetic sequences never before seen innature, and the scientists showed thatthey can produce substances that sustainlife in cells almost as readily as proteinsproduced by nature’s own toolkit.

“What we have here are molecularmachines that function quite well withina living organism even though they weredesigned from scratch and expressedfrom artificial genes,” said MichaelHecht, a professor of chemistry atPrinceton, who led the research. “Thistells us that the molecular parts kit forlife need not be limited to parts — genesand proteins — that already exist innature.”

The work, Hecht said, represents asignificant advance in synthetic biology,an emerging area of research in whichscientists work to design and fabricatebiological components and systems thatdo not already exist in the natural world.

* Don’t smoke, and quit if you currently smoke.* Stay away from secondhand smoke, and don’t

allow other people to smoke in your home.* Avoid exposure to lung-damaging chemicals.* Take steps to help promote clean air in your

Bike-riding ability maydistinguish ‘atypical’

Parkinson’sNEW YORK, 9 Jan —The ability to ride a bicycle can

determine whether a patient has atypical or “regular”Parkinson’s disease, according to researchers in theNetherlands.

Dr Bastiaan R Bloem and colleagues used brainimaging and other tests to assess 45 patients withParkinson’s disease and 66 with atypical Parkinsonism. The patients were also asked if they could still ride abicycle. Only two (4 percent) of those with regularParkinson’s said they could no longer ride, comparedwith 34 (52 percent) of those with atypical Parkinsonism.

The researchers found that asking patients if theycould still ride a bike had better diagnostic value thanthe tests. This suggests that asking about bike-ridingcould save money and reduce the burden for patients, said the researchers at the Parkinson Center Nijmegen.

The research is described in a letter published inthe 7 Jan issue of The Lancet.

“Cycling requires a highly coordinated interplaybetween balance, coordination, and rhythmic pedalingof the legs,” they wrote in a journal news release.

Nose may be best place toscreen for MRSA infection

WASHINGTON, 9 Jan — A new study finds that peoplewith high levels of methicillin-resistant staphylococcusaureus (MRSA) bacteria in the nose are more likely to haveother areas of the body colonized by MRSA, which cancause potentially fatal infections. Researchers at RhodeIsland Hospital wanted to assess the quantity of MRSA atdifferent locations on the body and the relationship betweenthe quantities of MRSA at different locations.

The investigators found that MRSA was more likely tobe found in the nose than under the arms, the groin, or theperineum (skin between the rectum and genitals). Theyalso found that people with high levels of MRSA in the nosewere more likely to have MRSA in the other threelocations.

“This study shows us that the quantities of MRSA atdifferent body sites are highly correlated. Also, if screeningcultures are to be done for MRSA, it is best to screen thenose and groin to get the highest yield,” lead author DrLeonard Mermel, medical director of the epidemiology andinfection control department, said in a hospital news release.

The study was released online 5 Jan in advance ofpublication in an upcoming print issue of the Journal ofClinical Microbiology.—Internet

Global fears rise over German meat

BERLIN, 9 Jan—Global fears mounted on Saturdayover the safety of German meat due to contaminatedanimal feed, with South Korea banning pork importsand Slovakia suspending poultry sales.

As the European Union insisted there was no

need for a ban, Germany moved to calm the concernsover food safety with test results showing acceptablelevels of dioxin, a potentially cancer-causing chemicalcompound, in poultry and meat.

The European Commission said South Korea hadbecome the first country to suspend imports of Germanpork and accused Seoul of overreacting.

“It is a decision which is out of proportion as towhat is going on in Germany, but we are going to tryto talk with the South Koreans to reassure them,” saidFrederic Vincent, spokesman for European healthcommissioner John Dalli.

Brussels does not consider there are grounds fordeclaring a ban on exports of German meat or otherproducts from Germany “because the farms havebeen closed and farm products which have beendelivered are blocked, awaiting analysis,” Vincentsaid.

Slovakia became the first EU country to imposerestrictions on German meat, after it suspended salesof poultry meat and eggs while it conducted tests toassess dioxin levels.—Internet

Beyond smoking scenes onChina’s TV screens

BEIJING, 9 Jan—Smoking pipes, tobacco threads, cigarettes, and dazzlingsmoking gestures, which are commonlyseen on China’s TV screens, haveemerged as a clear concern for manysupporters of tobacco control.

Xinhua reporters, while monitoringseven Chinese television channels, spotted49 screen shots of smoking from four TVseries being aired from 8 pm to 10 pm on4 Jan.

Of those smoking scenes, some lastless than one second while others went onfor as long as five seconds. However, these findings were only a small part of thepicture.

The China Association on Tobacco

Control (CATC), a non-profit organization, issued a report in August 2010 aftermonitoring 40 domestic Chinese moviesand 30 local TV series.

The results indicated that smokingscenes appeared in 31 movies, with anaverage of 15 screen shots, while smokingscenes were found in 28 TV series, withan average of 85 such screen shots.

Yang Gonghuan, director of theNational Office for Tobacco Control, saidthough smoking scenes on TV could notbe fully counted as tobaccoadvertisements, they could easily misleadadolescents and leave them without acorrect understanding as to what harmtobacco is responsible for.—Xinhua

The narco-messages indicated the Sinaloa cartelkilled them for trying to intrude on the gang’s turf andextort residents. Authorities said there were at leastthree minors among the dead.

Mexico’s drug cartels have increasingly taken tobeheading their victims in a grisly show of force, butSaturday’s discovery was the largest single group ofdecapitation victims found in recent years.

SYDNEY, 9 Jan—Heavyrains falling on Australia’sflooded north-east couldhave a “dramatic” impact, officials warned Sunday, stretching already swollenrivers and creeks to theirlimit across the devastatedregion.

Queensland policecommissioner AlistairDawson said that severeweather lashing thealready sodden northea-stern state could bring flashflooding to currently dryareas with little warning.

“Waters will risequickly — you may not beaware of that rise,”Dawson told reporters.“Those places which havegone under before, especially on the roadsystem, could well flood

again within an hour.”Emergency chief

Warren Bridson said theunprecedented deluge —which has hit an area largerthan France and Germanycombined, paralysing thekey agricultural and coal-mining region — meantthe rain’s impact wasunpredictable.

“The ground is sowaterlogged, the catchme

“That 200 millimetres(eight inches) of raincould mean the differencebetween a minor floodand a major flood,” headded.

MANCHESTER, 9 Jan—Steven Gerrard was sentoff as Ryan Giggs’s second-minute penalty provedenough to send Manchester United into the fourthround of the FA Cup, ruining Kenny Dalglish’semotional return as Liverpool manager.

Highly-recommended Innzin Village bean curd

Bean curd, one of the Myanmar traditionalfoods, is consumed as salad, crispy or dish.

For Myanmar people, it is mouthwatering tosee bean curd salad which is made of bean curdsticks, cooked oil with turmeric power, onionand garlic, and cut nannan or lemon leaves. Itcan also be used as a side dish.

Bean curd is also consumed as crisp. Greentea makes an excellent accompaniment to bean

curd crisp. In Shan State, bean cured crisp isconsumed as an additional food after si-chetnoodles (boiled noodles with cooked oil addedand garnished with shredded meat), rice noodles, and Shan noodles. In upper Myanmar, it isconsumed as a rich dish.

We sometimes go shopping in MyomaMarket in Tatkon Township, Nay Pyi TawDistrict. Many of the shops in the market arebean curd shops . Bean curd se l lers arehospitable to shoppers. Like sales assistantsof Hto-mont (pudding made of glutinous rice, sugar, coconut and oil) shops in Mandalay, keepers of bean curd shops in the marketpresent shoppers some bean curd to try it,which is to lure shoppers into buying theirproduct.

Bean curd in Myoma Market isrecommended. Being fairly hard, bean curd inthe market does not go bad easily, lasting forseveral days. Some buy and carry it to othertownships for consumption.

Observing bean curd shops in Myoma Marketin Tatkon Township, I became curious about theproduct. When asked about her product, seller DawKhin Htar told the Myanma Alin, “Shopkeepers ofthe bean curd shops in this market are all fromInnzin Village. Innzin Village is in the south ofYamethin. Most of the houses in our village makebean curd for their main business. Here, there areabout 30 bean curd shops. Villagers also run theirbean curd shops in downtown Yamethin, (See page 9)
