TUCSON, 28 Aug—A NASA spacecraft with a high-resolution camera hasphotographed a young Mars crater and found frozen water in it, scientists say.

A recent image from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter HiRISE camerashows water ice at the bottom of a 20-foot-wide crater on the planet’s surface,SPACE.com reported on Friday.

Researchers suspect the crater in the northern hemisphere formed recently, noearlier than April 2004, Nathan Bridges, a HiRISE science team member at theUniversity of Arizona, said.

The crater appeared in photos taken between 6 June and 7 July.“It’s showing we’re getting ice pretty far south,” Bridges said. “As we continue

to look at these things it’s a good way to determine where shallow ice is on Mars.”The ice patch covers an area of up to 20 square feet. It “is probably at the same

depth and has a similar origin to that excavated by the Phoenix lander back in2008,” he said.

NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander landed in the Martian arctic in May 2008 andfound evidence of water ice just beneath the surface.

During the next Martian summer “the HiRISE team will likely take additionalpictures to check up on the crater,” Bridges said.

THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Sunday, 29 August, 2010 7

When the raincomes in Myanmar, bamboo shoot pickle isabundant and smell fromthe pickle is floating inmarkets. The bambooshoot pickle dish is oneof popular Myanmarcuisines and gives agood appetite.

But, who knowshow does the bambooshoot pickle dish cometo a dining table? InMyanmar, almost everytown has its local foodproduct. While bambooshoot pickle from the re-gions of the eastern partof Pyinmana is popularthan other bamboo shootpickles from other areas, tea leaves and “Pe-poke”, dried sheets ofsoya beans, fromTaunggyi and othertowns in Shan State arewell known in thecountry.

I, being aninquisitive man, wasvery eager to find outhow do local people inrural areas work to getbamboo shoots and howdoes the pickle come tomarkets.

Fortunately, Ifound local farmerscarrying bamboo shootson their way back fromforests during my stay inWae-gyi Village, justabout 20 miles east ofNay Pyi Taw Pyinmana, last month.

Honest living behind Myanmar's popular cuisine Hmyit-chin (bamboo shoot pickle)By A M Soe

For me, it was arare opportunity to seehow ordinary peopleworked in the forests. Igot up early morning thenext day and took amotorbike taxi to the footof the mountain ranges. When I arrived there, Ifound there were manylocals carrying basketswith wooden handles ontheir back and strings helpthem carry the basketseasily, inside the basketsare only some bambooskewers and choppers. Some are marching alongthe lane flanked by bushesand trees leading to themountain ranges.

“We are farmers, our job after completingploughing in rain-fed fieldis collecting bambooshoots in the forests on themountain ranges”, said afarmer from the village ofTe-gon, which is famousfor producing bambooshoot pickle.

When the rainpours in the centralMyanmar, bamboo shootsare mushrooming in theforests along themountain ranges.

As they have fin-ished ploughing and whilewomen plant riceseedlings in rain-fed field, local farmers carry on forgathering the bambooshoots on the ShanMountain Ranges duringthe four-month of rainy

season from June to Sep-tember. Getting up beforethe sun rises, entering theforests on mountainranges to cut bambooshoots and going backbefore the sun sets aretheir daily routine in therainy season. Childrenalso go to the forest alongwith their fathers to helptheir families in the week-ends. According to thefarmer, the number ofbamboo shoot hunters hasincreased this year, reach-ing over 100 every day.

Unfortunately, Iwas dissuaded to go alongwith them to the forests asthey thought that I was notas tough enough asthemselve to struggle thehard work in the forests. But, I had a chance to waitfor them at the water fallwhich is just 30-minute-walk from the foot of themountain ranges.

After trekkingaround three hours, theyarrived at the top of themountain range. Afterhaving lunch broughtfrom their homes, packedin plantain leaf, theyentered into the forestsalong the mountainranges, said Win Soe, 37,father of two, living in thevillage of Wae-gyi, 15-minutes drive from thefoot of the mountainranges.

“If it's just aboutone foot in size, we cut it,

peel the outer layers, string them on skewersand arranged them in the“Pa” he said. The “Pa” isthe bamboo basket withstring and two handlesspecially designed tocarry the baskets comfort-ably on their backs.

Around 3 o' clockin the evening, I, whilesplashing my face withwater at the water fall, found some farmers car-rying the baskets heavilyloaded with bambooshoots, were walkingdown slowly from themountain, sweat werepouring on their face andtheir shirts were soakedwith sweat. It was themost exciting sight I wit-nessed during my staythere.

They have to taketheir time to reach the footof the mountain rangesbefore the sun sets to sellthe shoots. They sold theirbamboo shoots to thebrokers waiting at the footof the mountain.

A farmer collectsfrom 30 to 40 viss ofbamboo shoots per day, earning around K 8000 inthe mid-rainy season. Theprice of bamboo shootsdeclines, reaching aroundK200 for one viss in themid-rainy season whenthe bamboo shoots areplentiful due to sufficientrain falls from aroundK600 for one viss in early

rainy season.As the region usu-

ally enjoys poor rain fallsin early rainy season, theycan collect only two orthree viss of bambooshoots per day duringthose days when the pricehas increased up to K600per viss.

The bamboo shootseason is also the time forlocal farmers to earn moreincome.

However, they can'tgo to the forest every daysince it is a tiring job. “Ourwork is very very tiringand risky. Sometimes, weslipped on stones and gotmuscle pains. That's whywe can't go to work everyday, and have to stay athome for two or three daysin a week to take a rest,”Win Soe said.

Though so tired, some go to Te-gon, thevillage of the bambooshoot pickle makers, toget a good price. Aftertaking pictures of bambooshoot trading at the footof the mountain, Iproceeded to the villageof Te-gon by motorbike.

While I waschatting with some picklemakers, I foundtransporters drove motor-bikes loaded with bags ofbamboo shoots to thevillage located about 20-minute drive from the footof the mountain. Whenthe dark comes, villagers

are ready to start theprocess of making bam-boo shoots pickle.

Bamboo shootsare chopped into slicesand soaked in water fortwo days in a tank. Thebamboo shoot picklemakers sold theirproducts to shops inNay Pyi Taw Pyinmana. At the shops, thebamboo shoot picklewas labeled in differentnames and sold to cus-tomers.

“There are manylabels of bamboo shootpickle packages at shopsin the town. All are ourpickle.” a man said as hewas slicing the rawbamboo shoots at hishome in the village ofTe-gon. Thanks to theforests, even childrenare earning now as theydo in lighter work ofslicing the bambooshoots.

As they said, they don't need to worryfor their food and theyowe a great debt ofgratitude to the forestsand mountain ranges fortheir livelihood. Themountain ranges takecare of their livelihood, giving the seasonal jobto locals. Yes, they canalso find other seasonalcrops growing naturallyin the forests, to maketheir honest living.

White Elephants of MyanmarDr. Khin Maung Nyunt

Animals with striking features, beautiesand pleasant voices are revered and veneratedbecause they are bel ieved to possessauspiciousness, magical spell and supernaturalpower, capable of bringing glory, greatness, peace, progress, prosperity, longevity of life andgood fortune to the owner and to the countrywhere they appear. White tiger, white horse, white buffalo, white ox, white cow, white crow, white dove, white peacock and white elephantare regarded sacred and lucky mascots in humancivilization till today.

White elephant played a major role inBuddha Jatakas. The story of Sadan WhiteElephant, the Jataka of King Vessandara, theLord of the White Elephant, the conception ofBodhi Sattha in the womb of Queen mother MahaMaya when she dreamt the entering of a malewhite elephant into her womb are there eminentevidences. White horse and white elephant aretwo of seven ratanas (treasures) of Cakaravan(Universal Monarch) according to the texts ofancient treatises. Myanmar kings performed royalploughing ceremony riding bejewelled gilt ploughpulled by a pair of richly caparisoned oxen ofmilky white complexion.

King Anawrahta, the builder of the firstMyanmar Union used white elephants to bring tohis Naypyitaw Bagan 33 sets of Tipitaka, a whiteelephant named “Palei Pyone” (Smiling Pearl) toconvey replica of sacred Tooth Relic and anotherwhite elephant named “Than Myan Swar” (Strongand Swift) for choosing five auspicious sites forbuilding five Sacred Tooth Relic Pagodas. Heowned 38 white elephants and King Alaungsithuhad 35 white elephants.

Among Mon, Rakhine and Bama kings ofsuccessive historic periods, there were kingswho assumed the title “Lord of White Elephantor Elephants” because they owned them. Thuswe have Tazi Shin (One White Elephant) Thihathuand Ngazi Shin (Five White Elephants) KyawSwa of Pinya Period; Tayaphya, Thihathu andShwe Nan Kyaw Shin were lords of WhiteElephant of Inwa Period, Wareru, Binnya U andRajadarit were Mon kings who assumed the title“Hsinbyu Shin” (Lord of White Elephant).Rakhine King Minyazayi was the Lord of White

Elephant. He even struck silver coins with letters“Hsinbyu Shin”.

King Bayint Naung of Hamsavadi, thebuilder of the second Myanmar Union wasdesignated “Emperor of the Ten Directions” byhis tributary lords. He was entitled “Hsinbyumyashin” (Lord of many white elephants). Europeanvisitors to his Palace Kambozathadi such as CaesarFredrick of Venice, Italy, Gasparo Balbi of Portugaland others reported in their travelogues theireyewitness account of his white elephants and warelephants. King Taninganwe of Nyaung Yan Periodwas the Lord of white Elephant named “SadanPyaung Mon”.

Alaungpaya of Ratanatheinkha, the builderof the third Myanmar Union addressed himself incredential letters “Lord of White, Pink and SpottedElephants”. His second son and successor MyeyduMin who gilt and raised Shwedagon Pagoda topresent height assumed “Hsinbyu Shin” becausehe received the tribute of a handsome WhiteElephant named “Sadan Pyaung Kyaw”. KingBodawpaya, the third son and the fourth successorand donor of the great Mingun Bell possessedeleven white elephants. Besides, another whiteelephant of Sadan type was found in Niban villagenear Bago Yoma hill range and so he assumed“Sadan Hsin Min Thakin”. It was given Pali name“Nibana Pyitsaya Naga Yaza”. This great WhiteElephant outlived five successive Myanmar kings. Its fantastic tusks were last seen on display in theNatural History Museum in London.

Kings Bagyidaw, Thayawady, Bagan,Mindon and even the last Myanmar king Thibawalso owned white elephants and so they were“Hsinbyu Shins”. When the British occupiedMandalay Palace in 1885, they sent to YangonZoo, King Thibaw’s White Mount “Zeya WatanaPyitsaya Naga Yaza”, which passed away not longafter. Myanmar people thought the death of lastMyanmar king’s white elephant was a forebodingthat the British rule in Myanmar would not lastlong. Myanmar regained independence in 1948,just 63 years after Mandalay Palace was takenover by the British garrison in 1885.

In 1958, a female white elephant of about 19years old was found in Indawgyi of MyitkyinaDistrict. She was sent to Yangon Zoo and kept in a

specially built hall. But in 1977 she passed away.Nearly over four decades, there was no

emergence of white elephant until 2001 when amale white elephant of about 16 years in ageappeared in Yathedaung Township, RakhineState. On 15 November of the same year he wasbrought to Yangon and ceremonially named“Rajagaha Thiripyitsaya Gaza Raja”. He wasgiven residence in a specially built pavilion in agarden near Mindhamma hillock, Insein. A yearlater, 2002, second white elephant, a female ofabout 32 years in age was found in the forest ofMaungtaw Township, Rakhine State. She wasbrought to Yangon and accommodated in WhiteElephant Pavilion on 5 April, 2002. She wasnamed “Theingi Marlar”. In the same year thethird white elephant, a female of about 12 yearsin age was found in Maungtaw Township,Kinchaung Stream, Rakhine State. On 6December 2002, she was brought to Yangon andwas given residence in White Elephant Pavilion. Her name is “Rati Marlar”.

The fourth white elephant, a female ofabout 38 years old was found on 26 June, 2010 inthe forests of Maungtaw Township, RakhineState. On 9 August, 2010 she was ceremoniallyconveyed to Nay Pyi Taw and was given residencein a specially constructed White ElephantPavilion, in the precincts of Uppatasanti Zeditaw. She received five Mingala rites namely (1)Anantayika Mingala (Warding off harm) (2)Gehapavesana Mingala (House warming) (3)Battabhunjana Mingala (Feeding) (4)Ravindudasana Mingala (Showing her to the Sunand the Moon) and (5) Namakarana Mingala(Naming). She was named “Bhaddawady”.

These four white elephants that emergedwithin the current decade (2001-2010) bear allcharacteristics and features of a White Elephantas prescribed in the texts of ancient treatises onWhite Elephant, Buddha Jatakas and Tipitaka. Most auspicious symbols of peace, progress, prosperity, glory, longevity of life, good rain, good harvest and good fortune, the four whiteelephants are admired, marvelled and veneratedby Myanmar people. MA N C H E S T E R, 28 Aug—US and Brit ishresearchers say they have succeeded in resettingthe 24-hour body clock in mice.

Researcher Andrew Loudon of the Universityof Manchester, England, says several enzymes areresponsible for fine adjustments in synchronizationof circadian rhythm — a timing system thatregulates biological processes plants as well ascreatures.

Loudon, Dr Mick Hastings of the MedicalResearch Council Laboratory of Molecular Biologyin Cambridge, England, Dr Travis Wager of Pizerin Groton, Conn, and colleagues say a drug thatinhibits one of the enzymes — casein kinase 1 —helps in re-setting the body clock in mice.

“We’ve discovered that we can control one ofthe key molecules involved in setting the speed atwhich the clock ticks and in doing so we canactually kick it into a new rhythm,” Loudon saysin a statement.

The study, published in the Proceedings of theNational Academy of Sciences, suggests the findingmay help treat a number of health problems linkedto disrupted circadian rhythms.—Internet

LONDON, 28 Aug — Eight key signs of cancer thatshould be investigated immediately have been identi-fied by scientists. The symptoms predict the risk of can-cer with such accuracy in certain age groups that pa-tients should be referred to a specialist straight awayunless there is a plausible explanation. The research, led by Mark Shapley and colleagues from Keele Uni-versity, was published in the ‘British Journal of Gen-eral Practice’. Identifying these symptoms should im-prove the number of early diagnoses, when people havethe best chance of responding to treatment. The team saidGPs should be given better computer systems to arm themwith the tools to identify cancers much earlier. The signs are: * Bleeding from the rectum (indicative of colon can-

cer in older age groups). * Iron deficiency anaemia (indicative of colon can-

cer). * Breast lump (possible breast cancer). * A rectal examination which suggests cancer may

be present (possible prostate cancer). * Blood in the urine (indicative of cancers related

FUKUOKA, 28 Aug—A researcher in Japan haslinked insulin resistance in diabetes and the brainplaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Lead author Dr. Kensuke Sasaki of KyushuUniversity in Fukuoka, Japan, said more studiesare needed to determine if insulin resistance — thestage before diabetes, when insulin, a hormone, becomes less effective in lowering blood sugar —may help cause these plaques. “It’s possible that bycontrolling or preventing diabetes, we might alsobe helping to prevent Alzheimer’s disease,” Sasakisaid in a statement. The study, published inNeurology, found people with abnormal results onthree tests of blood sugar control had an increasedrisk of developing plaques. Plaques were found in72 percent of people with insulin resistance and 62percent of people with no indication of insulinresistance.—Internet
