The government has established indus-

trial zones in different parts of the country

for industrial development and has been

providing assistance for progress of indus-

tries related to producing import substitute

items. Moreover, it is making endeavours for

manufacturing spare parts and machine

parts being used in local factories and work-

shops.

Altogether 1,275 items of various kinds

used in factories of the ministries concerned

have been produced in the country by local

technicians and industrialists through col-

lective efforts. A total of 1,431 items of vari-

ous kinds are being produced on trial basis.

Manufacturing of accessories and ma-

chine parts locally can save foreign exchange.

Availability of local-made spare parts in the

country contributes towards full operation

of the factories and workshops. Emergence

of small and medium industries also helps

realize the objective to establish an industri-

alized nation.

enhances the skills and technology of local

technicians and industrialists and contrib-

utes towards the increase of job opportuni-

ties and uplift of socio-economic life of the

national people.

It is believed that technicians and indus-

trialists are to exert greater efforts for boost-

ing production of accessories and machine

Too many vitamins increase prostatecancer risk

B EIJING, 16 May —Men who take too manyvitamins may increasethe risk of dying fromprostate cancer, accord-ing to researchers at theUS National CancerInstitute Wednesday.

The researchers foundthat men who exceededthe recommended dose— taking more thanseven multivitamins aweek — increased therisk of advanced cancerby about 30 percent. The study tracked thediet and health of almost300,000 men over fiveyears to see if there was a

link between multivita-min use and prostatecancer.

About a third reportedtaking a daily multivi-tamin, and 5 per-cent wereheavy users, swallowingthe pills more than seventimes a week.

Within five years of thestudy’s start, 10,241 menhad been diagnosed withprostate cancer. Some1,476 had advanced can-cer; 179 died. Overall, theresearchers found no linkbetween multivitamin useand early-stage prostatecancer.”

We didn’t see any

relationship with overallprostate cancer,” said DrMichael Leitzmann, aNational Cancer Instituteinvestigator who workedon the study.

He said the increasedrisk from overuse ofmultivitamins was linkedto more aggressive cancerthat has spread beyondthe prostate gland orcancer that proved fatal.

The researchers specu-lated that perhaps high-dose vitamins had littleeffect until a tumorappeared, and then couldspur its growth.

Our pay depends on our performance. (Daw Thein Thein).

Rural women earn extra income from rope-making works.

ONE VILLAGE,ONE PRODUCT

Beda ropes for export.

“Beda plants (waterhyacinth) are cut whenthe length of their stemsreaches as long as 13inches. These beda stemsare sun-dried for threedays. The dried stems arethen twisted into ropes.Roughly, a 100-foot ropecan be made from 300beda plants”, said an in-charge of a beda rope-making workshoplocated near Maha CetiPagoda at Kyaikpawvillage, Bago Township,Bago Division.

He explained theprocess of making ropesfrom beda stems to ourteam of Myanma Alindaily. As the ropes aremade by twisting driedstems of water hyacinth, they are called bedaropes.

Beda, the main rawmaterial, comes fromThanatpin, Waw,Phayagyi and Kali

Villages. Actually, bedarope cottage industry helpsdevelop rural economy asit generates jobopportunities for ruralpeople from the stage of

cutting bada plants to theprocess of rope making.Natives learn thetechnique of rope makingan in-house trainingconducted from 10 to 15days. The trainees receive

a daily wage of K 500during the course.

A skilled worker canproduce four 100-foot

ropes a day. As formothers, raw materials aresent to their homes, so thatthey can make ropeswithout coming to theworkshop. Normally, aworker earns K 1000 per

day as an extra income.Beda ropes can be

used as a substitute forrattan in making furniture

and other personal goodsincluding hand bags.Local market for beda-rope-based finished goodsand beda ropes is small, but the goods are exported

to China.The workshop we

visited has about 60workers, mostly fromKyaikpaw village.

Ma Khin Mar Cho, anemployee of theworkshop, told us that therope-making works hadhelped fulfilled herfamily’s basic needs.

“I am very happy withthis workshop as itgenerates extra income forour family. Besides, I also

earn money to pay myschool expenses”, MaMoe Moe Swe, who hasalready sat for thematriculation exam-ination, said.

As for 45-year-oldDaw Thein Thein, she canearn money as much asshe works while stayingat home. “I am interestedin this work”, she told us.

Beda plants (waterhyacinth) are available inabundance in manyplaces of Myanmar. Theplant grows fast in largecolonies and canregenerate well.

A new plant can evensprout from an unusedstem that is thrown backinto water.

Moreover, driedstems that do not meetthe required standard formaking ropes can be usedfor making naturalfertilizer.

So, there is noquestion of waterhyacinth depletionbecause of the business.

Another advantage isthat the business can berun with less capital.

Bago TownshipUnion Solidarity andDevelopment Asso-ciation and Three RedStar company are runningthe workshop. Actually, they are implementingone of the tasks of thefive rural developmentproject, as the workshopis generating jobopportunities for villagepeople and helpingdevelop the economy ofthe rural areas where 70per cent of the nation’spopulation live.

World Telecommunicationand Information Society Day

17 May 2007

“Connecting the Young:the opportunities of ICT”

Message from Dr HamadounTouré, Secretary-General

of ITUYANGON, 17 May — The following is the mes-

sage from Dr Hamadoun Touré, Secretary-General, In-ternational Telecommunication Union, on the occasionof World Telecommunication and Information SocietyDay which falls today.

In an increasingly networked world, theyoung are not only the beneficiaries but often the driv-ing force behind the latest innovations and practices, and for many, the dependence on information andcommunication technologies (ICT) has come to de-termine their choice of lifestyle. It is clearly our dutytoday to provide the opportunities of ICT to all chil-dren and youth, particularly to those who remain un-connected from the ongoing digital revolution.

The World Summit on the Information Society(WSIS) recognized young people as the futureworkforce and earliest adopters of ICT and calledfor their empowerment. In order to achieve this criti-cal objective, national e-strategies must address thespecial requirements of children, especially the dis-advantaged and marginalized, and ensure their fullinclusion in the Information Society. ICT are pow-erful tools to empower children and other vulner-able groups with information and knowledge and actas a catalyst in ensuring their rights within the com-ity of nations.

Marking its inception on 17 May 1865, ITU isthe oldest international organization in existence. Yetthe Union is young at heart and remains at the cuttingedge of global communications. As world leadersdeclared at WSIS, ITU is committed to developingICT infrastructure and facilitating interoperability, inter connection and global connectivity of networksand services, strengthening the development of anenabling environment, and instilling confidence inthe use of ICTs by promoting cybersecurity. TheUnion is also committed to extending the benefitsof ICT to people any time, anywhere.

This year, we focus on integrating youth issuesinto ITU’s development activities as a means of of-fering the young more opportunities and betterchoice of options for the future. On the one hand,ICT must be utilized to enhance capacity buildingamong the young by improved e-learning and edu-cation. On the other hand, we are committed to pro-moting their capabilities in utilizing ICT towards theadvancement of a better, more peaceful and produc-tive world.

As we celebrate World Information Society Day,we invite all our stakeholders as well as internationalorganizations, non-governmental organizations andpublic policy-makers to give children and youngpeople around the world every possible assistancein accessing ICT. This is critical for the young as ameans of learning, sharing information and knowl-edge, improving their health and nutrition, and com-municating with other children and youth.

The key to achieving the development aspira-tions of the world’s inhabitants lies in investing inthe future generation, especially by improving ac-cess to communication among today’s children andenhancing their capacities.—MNA

BALTIMORE (UnitedStates), 15 May—Astronomers have foundone of the best pieces ofevidence for the existenceof dark matter, amysterious quantity thatpervades our Universe.

They have identifiedwhat appears to be aghostly ring in the skywhich is made up of thisenigmatic substance.

Using the HubbleSpace Telescope, thescientists have establishedthat the ring formed longago after a colossal smash-up between two galaxyclusters.

Details of the researchare to appear in theAstrophysical Journal.

As the name suggests, dark matter does notreflect or emit detectable

light, yet it accounts formost of the mass in theUniverse.

Astronomers have longsuspected the existence ofthis invisible “stuff” as thesource of additionalgravity that holds togethergalaxy clusters.

The clusters would flyapart if they were reliant

only on the gravity fromtheir visible stars.

No one knows whatdark matter is made of,but it is thought to be atype of elementary particlefound throughout thecosmos. Researchers fromJohns Hopkins Universityand the Space TelescopeScience Institute — both

in Baltimore, US - spottedthe ring unexpectedlywhile they were mappingthe distribution of darkmatter within the galaxycluster Cl 0024+17.

This cluster lies 5billion light-years fromEarth; its ring of darkmatter measures 2.6million light-years across.

Because astronomerscannot see dark matter, they must infer itsexistence by studying howits gravity bends the lightof more distant, back-ground galaxies.

This powerful trick, called gravitational lens-ing, allows astronomers tomap the distorted light todeduce the cluster’s massand how dark matter isdistributed in the cluster.

Goalkeeper Hilario lined upas reserve Cup final striker

LONDON, 16 May — Chelsea are so short of playersfor Saturday's FA Cup final they may be forced to usegoalkeeper Hilario as a substitute striker, managerJose Mourinho said.

Mourinho, who has spent millions to bring in newplayers but insists on working with a "manageable"size squad, said he was down to 15 fit men for theWembley showdown with double-chasing Manches-ter United.

Mourinho suffered his latest blow when midfielderJohn Obi Mikel was ruled out with a hamstring injurypicked up in Sunday's final Premier League game, a11 home draw with Everton.

Michael Ballack, Andriy Shevchenko, RicardoCarvalho, Arjen Robben and teenage striker ScottSinclair were already definite absentees while fullbackAshley Cole is still doubtful.

ZURICH, 16 May — FIFA willinvestigate the controversial trans-fer to West Ham United ofArgentines Carlos Tevez and JavierMascherano, the world governingbody's president Sepp Blatter saidon Tuesday.

Blatter told a media briefing atFIFA headquarters in Zurich thathis organization would look intothe case regardless of any legalchallenges launched by West Ham'srival clubs.

"We are monitoring this situa-tion very carefully and we willourselves look at the files once ithas been dealt with by the English

league and the Football Associa-tion," Blatter said. "We will look atthis, and not only if we are asked. We will do it anyway."

West Ham were fined a record-5.5-million-pound (10.88-million-US dollar) last month by an inde-pendent Premier League commis-sion which ruled that the players'contracts drawn up at their Augusttransfer contravened league rulesby giving certain rights to third-party companies. West Ham, how-ever, admitted the charge and es-caped a points deduction that wouldhave almost certainly condemnedthem to relegation.— MNA/Reuters

LOS ANGELES, 16 May — PhilMickelson's superb victory at the Play-ers Championship has raised the pros-pect of a mouth-watering rivalry be-tween the American left-hander andworld number one Tiger Woods at nextmonth's US Open.

Although it would be foolish to drawtoo many conclusions from what is, afterall, just one tournament win, the mannerin which it was accomplished has whet-ted the appetite of golf fans across theglobe.

Mickelson, in harness with new swingcoach Butch Harmon for only the thirdtournament, delivered a consummateexhibition from tee to green at Sawgrasson Sunday that suggests he is ready tolift his game to a new level at the majors.

"Phil the Thrill" has long entertainedfans with his dazzling skills around thegreen and his swashbuckling, high-riskapproach combined with one or twomoments of bone-headed stupidity.

Although he has become one of themost meticulous practitioners in the gamewith his build-up to the big events overthe last few years, his driving accuracyhas been well documented as his Achil-

les' heel. He himself has said that memo-ries of his US Open meltdown at WingedFoot last year will never really be ban-ished until he wins the tournament forthe first time.

The emerging 2007 version of "Lefty",as he is popularly known, hints at a near-perfect blend of careful course manage-ment without sacrificing the short-gameskills for which he has become a fanfavourite.— MNA/Reuters

NAY PYI TAW, 16 May — The people who opposeunrest and love peace prevented 29 persons includingSu Su Nway from causing a disturbance at the busstop on Station Road, Insein Township, YangonDivision, yesterday at 10.30 am. The people handedover the 29 who were constantly trying to stir upunrest under the pretext of religion to the authoritiesconcerned. Similarly, the people who are againstunrest stopped Thant Zin Myo and group from caus-ing unrest in Hlinethaya Township, and handed themover to the authorities.

Twenty-three persons including NLD membersU Than Htay (joint secretary), Tin Ohn, Kyin Hlaing,Han Thein, Soe Win, Daw Mi Mi Hlaing, Daw YinYin Kyi, Daw San Yi, Kyaw Zin Win (youth in-charge 1), Kyaw Kyaw Lin (youth in-charge 2), NayLin Kyaw (a) Kon Nyar, Nay Zar Myo Win and BoBo Win Hlaing of Dawdon Township, and other NLDmembers Tin Naing Thein (Chauk), Ohn Lwin(Yenangyoung), Myint Ngwe (Yenangyoung), MyoKhin (Yankin), Daw Tin Yi (Yangkin) and Thawda(Thakayta) led by Su Su Nway said prayers at a cornerof Pyilonchantha Myaceti Pagoda in the compoundof Arthawkayama monastery on Myoma Street,Yamonna Ward 1, Dawbon, from 8 am to 8.45 amyesterday. Ten persons including Su Su Nway of thegroup wore T-shirts bearing the portrait of Daw SuuKyi. The group tricked 11 children playing in thecompound into taking part in their prayer service. Inthe prayer service, U Than Htay gave anti-govern-ment talks for the release of Daw Suu Kyi andpolitical prisoners and they presented 200 kyats eachto the 11 children and let them go.

Su Su Nway and members left Dawbon Town-ship for Insein Township. When they arrived atInsein, some members of Insein Township NLDjoined the group. The 29 persons arrived at the busstop on Station Road in Nantthagon Ward at 10.30am. Then some residents who did not want to see any

Peace-loving people prevent instigators from tryingto cause instability and unrest under the pretext of

religion, and hand them over to authoritiesunrest dissuaded Su Su Nway and members frominciting a protest and persuaded them to go home. However, Su Su Nway and members did not accept thepersuasion and tried to keep on inciting a protest.Local people prevented them from doing so and en-trusted them to the authorities. There were no conflictsand no one was injured in the incident.

The 29 members included Insein Township NLDmembers Saw Kyaw Kyaw Min (in charge of youths),Nyi Nyi Aung, Daw Nyein Tin and U Ye Aung alongwith Maung Shine Htet Aung, 13, son of U MaungShwe and Daw Myint Aye of Phawtkan Ward inInsein Township. The investigation revealed that UYe Aung took Maung Shine Htet Aung with an offerthat he would pay a visit to a pagoda and would servehim with coffee if the latter would accompany him.So authorities entrusted Maung Shine Htet Aung tohis parents.

Similarly, at about 7 am yesterday, 11 HlinethayaTownship NLD members— Thant Zin Myo (Secre-tary) and wife Hla Hla Maw, Hsan Win, Win Myint,San Naing, Aung Min Naing, Kyaw Soe Win, SoeMin, Tin Yu, Yan Naing Tun and Myo Kyaw Zin—wearing T-shirts with the picture of Daw Suu Kyiwalked in procession along Bo Aung Kyaw Street inHlinethaya Township. The people who do not wantdisturbance and want to live in peace told them todisperse and not to disrupt peace and tranquillity. Butthey did walk in procession without accepting therequest of the people. Therefore, the people handedover the 11 persons to the authorities concerned. Uponinvestigation, Thant Zin Myo, San Naing, Kyaw SoeWin and Win Myint persuaded other people who tookpart in the movement after giving them T-shirts withthe picture of Daw Suu Kyi free of charge.

So-called 88 generation student group who at-tempted to cause unrest launched White Sunday Cam-paign every Sunday. The group visited the families ofthose serving the prison terms after breaking the law,

consoled them and provided cash. In order to do so,some big nations and expatriate organizations areproviding necessary cash for them.

Regarding the activities such as prayer service, walking in procession and agitation and consoling thefamilies of those serving the prison terms, the peoplewho want to live in peace said that it was not normal. It was the abhorrent act that the group deceived thechildren in order to take some advantage in theirmovement. Those including Daw Suu Kyi who wereunder restrictions were detained for attempting todisrupt peace and tranquillity and cause unrest in thecountry. In the same way, all the inmates of variousprisons have to be doing their time as they broke anyexisting law. In all nations without exception, anyone, including politicians, who breaks the law will not gounpunished. Arrest and detention like this are nothingunusual. These people are trying to politicize a normalevent and ignite unrest by visiting pagodas and march-ing in procession, praying for the release of politicalprisoners. If they want to pray for freedom of politicalprisoners, they can do so at their homes. Such instiga-tion is not acceptable. The people want only peaceand stability. The current situation of the nation isfavourable in every way for development. However, its impossible to achieve sound results in a short time.We must wait for a reasonable period of time to beable to enjoy the fruits of development. One thing thatis certain is that people will be able to overcomehardships and enjoy benefits in the near future. Fa-vourable conditions can be ruined by the act of sabo-teurs. People are saying that punitive action should betaken against these destructive elements.

Now, all those who attempted to destroy peaceand stability and ignite violence are being interro-gated, and authorities concerned have urged the pub-lic to prevent saboteurs from committing destructiveacts that could destabilize the nation.
