Kollaboration is an annual talent competition showcase and movement produced by Asian and Pacific Islander (API) professionals and students in 14 major cities across North America to promote a strong API presence and support in entertainment and media.
Kollaboration was founded in 2000 by Executive Director Paul “PK” Kim. Under the guidance of Executive Producer Roy Choi, Kollaboration officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 2006 and has emerged as the premier Asian and Pacific Islander talent showcase across North America.
Our mission and mantra is “Empowerment through Entertainment.” In addition to encouraging the diverse talents of Asian Pacific Islander youth, Kollaboration seeks to empower:
(1) API youth by providing them with a creative outlet and leadership training that serves as an alternative to gang-activity and delinquency for those at risk.
(2) APIfamiliesbyofferingaplatformforcommunicationthatbridgesthegapbetweenfirstgeneration parents and latter generation youth.
(3) The API community at large, by raising awareness for other critical community issues and NGOs.
It is evident that APIs are often categorized into a certain image. APIs may find it increasingly difficult to get jobs outside the “model minority” or “foreigner”
role. Such barriers often result in the lack of APIs in mainstream entertainment industries. Thus, APIs are not only unfairly portrayed but also disproportionately underrepresented in the mainstream media. Therefore, our youth are left with few visible role models and a narrowed pool of aspirations.
Through generous sponsorships, Kollaboration endeavors to bring about a paradigm shift of perceptions and to pave the way for future APIs to accomplish their goals and dreams that may be entertainment related. In contrast to our mission statement of “Empowerment Through Entertainment,” the ultimate vision for Kollaboration is “Entertainment Through Empowerment,” envisioning a future when our organization represents a movement of innovative and creative artistry with all races and ethnicities.
Founder Paul Kim was also recently invited to the White House as part of the AAPI Initiative “What’s Your Story” campaign as one of the nine Champions of Change community leaders, recognizing his work with the Kollaboration movement. Kollaboration was also honored with the 2012 API Policy Summit’s Community Impact Award.
02
The initial team of staff and volunteers returned the honor in bringing a historical new organization into the Pacific Northwest. Tickets were sold out the day before the inaugural show on October 23, 2010 at the Auburn Performing Arts Center with over 1,100 in attendance.
Since then, Kollaboration Seattle has partnered with local community organizations to bring more events and stages for the API community, including benefit concerts, tours and album releases featuring artists such as Jayesslee, MC Jin, New Heights, Clara C, David Choi, Joseph Vincent, Jin Akanishi(?), Massive Monkees and several of the Kollaboration Seattle competitors. On a more global scale, Kollaboration partnered up with one of South Korea’s three biggest production companies to host their US global auditions in various local cities, including Seattle.
As a part of the local API community, Kollaboration Seattle has continued to grow its relationships with other API organizations in giving back and supporting other community events such as, International Examiner’s Community Voice Awards, ACRS Annual Walk for Rice, and From Hiroshima to Hope—an event in memory of those impacted by the Hiroshima and Nagasaki incident during the World War II. Also, with the vast network of talents, Kollaboration Seattle continues to seek to empower the future generations through various workshops and youth programs, such as Northwest Asian
Weekly’s Summer Youth Leadership Program, dance and vocal workshops at the annual Community Health Plan’s Healthy Holidays, and career workshops for Asian American students at UW Dawg Daze.
In 2012, Kollaboration also had the opportunity to work with MNET, South Korea’s largest music television network, to create a six-episode reality TV show series about the entire Kollaboration movement and broadcast to its audience throughout Asia and the US. “Kollaboration Star” followed the journey of 12 Kollaboration cities and their grand prize winners, seven of which earned the opportunity to compete in a grand finale show in Los Angeles for the chance to perform on the coveted stage of the end of the year MNET Asian Music Awards in Hong Kong. Although Kollaboration Seattle’s 2012 grand prize winner did not win the finale, both grand prize winners of 2011 and 2012 have been chosen to compete in Los Angeles in Kollaboration’s finale flagship show.
Kollaboration Seattle became the first show of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. Its strong talent showcase and community involvement has made it a historic landmark event for the API community. With such a promising start and continued efforts, this movement will grow and continue to spread the message of empowerment with each passing year.

Kollaboration Seattle was among five other cities to join the Kollaboration movement in 2010 for its 10th year and had the extreme honor of capping the year as the last show hosted by Kollaboration founder Paul “PK” Kim, who retired to pursue other endeavors.
