I have to say, it is at this stage of Term 4 that I start to get confused about what year it actually is! Since our last newsletter, the Year 10 students, under the guidance of Mrs Fleay, have prepared and delivered their speeches to members of Rotary as part of their Bursary support. Feedback suggests they all did a wonderful job and we wait to hear who the successful candidates are. The incoming Year 6 and Year 10 students also presented their 2019 Student Leader speeches, all primary students from Year 3 to Year 5 and students in the current Year 6 to Year 9 classes were able to vote for their preferred candidate. The successful students will be announced as School Captains for 2019 at the Presentation Night. End of Year Presentation Night and Graduation Our whole school Presentation Night will be held on Tuesday 11 th December 2018. We ask that you are seated by 6:15pm for a 6:30pm start. The theme for this year is Space. Each class has been working really hard on their items, I think I am in a good position to sing along with the Year 6 class ‘Star-trekking’ song now, as it is heard in my house at least once a day! Students will be dismissed at 12:25pm on Tuesday 11 th December, to allow students time to rest and get ready for Presentation Night. The Year 10 Graduation will be held on Friday 7 th December at 6:00pm. Mrs Fleay is keeping families up to date with arrangements. The Kindy Graduation will be held on Tuesday 11 th December at 11:00am and I look forward to attending this and seeing our youngest students take a step closer to full time schooling in 2019. Finally, our Year 6 class will hold their Graduation Ceremony on Thursday 13 th December at 11:00am followed by a shared lunch; this is also the last day for all students and teachers. P&C Thank You As many of you are aware, our school P&C are a dedicated group of parents who contribute an enormous amount to our school. In addition to fundraising for additional school equipment and facilities, they are also responsible for some of the services available to our students such as the magnificently run Canteen. Thank you to Janet Evans (President), the executive and all members of the P&C for your support of the students at our school. The P&C will be hosting a ‘Welcome Back’ picnic early in Term 1 for all families and staff, watch out for more details. Volunteers Thank You The staff and I would like to sincerely thank all parents and members of the community who have generously volunteered their time in some way to assist with camps, excursions, reading and as an extra pair of hands during many class activities. Without this support many of our regular activities just would not be possible. Positions Vacant for School Council and P&C 2019 There will be a number of positions becoming vacant on both committees for 2019. This is an excellent opportunity for you to become more involved in our school community and help Kojonup DHS reach its full potential.

THE YEAR FOUR KINGS PARK AND PERTH ZOO EXCURSION On the 22

nd and 23

rd November 2018, my class (the Year 4’s) and parent volunteers went to Kings Park and Perth Zoo –

South of Perth – to learn and explore about different zoo animals.

When we got to school we packed our bags into the trailer and got ready to go to Williams. While we were on the road we played, told stories, took photos and did our work packs. Soon we arrived at Williams and we played and ate recess there. Then we got a picture with the numbat statue.

After that we hit the road and went to Synergy Parkland to have lunch. After lunch we had a play and took a photo of the crocodile (dinosaur) and the Year 4 class! Next we went to Kings Park to fill out our work packs.

First we explored the big boab tree. Next we looked at the big statue of John Forrest and after that we explored all the Remembrance Day things and Cenotaph. Next we went to Synergy Parkland to have afternoon tea and have a play.

Then we headed off to the zoo. We unloaded our bags and bought stuff from the gift shop while we waited for the zookeepers. When the zookeepers got there (Rob and Judy), they showed us where we were going to be sleeping and we got a short walk around the zoo.

When it was darker Judy, (one of the zookeepers) told us about enrichments and what it was used for. We had to identify enrichment items and talk about what animal would use it. After that we did a night walk and we shined a red light on the animals so it wouldn’t blind them. The lion was cool and it looked like it was getting ready to pounce on Savannah!

At night, nuts were dropping on the roof and the wind was howling so it was a long night. In the morning, we packed up and said our goodbye and then we went back to Williams. We had burgers for lunch and played for a bit and then we hit the road again. When we got to school we unpacked our bags and went home.

I liked the zoo the best because the animals were awesome and it was fun to look at all the real zoo animals. The realistic dinosaurs had really cool sound effects. By Pippa Radford

YEAR TWO WAR ON WASTE WEEK Throughout Week 8, both the Year 2 classes have gone absolutely recycling crazy! Each day has been filled with activities centered around the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle campaign, enabling students to learn all about the positive impact they have on our environment. We have upcycled materials to create foaming monsters, Christmas decorations, a bottle top mural and have even been on an excursion to Blackwood Waste and the Renew Opshop. Our 42 students were lucky enough to see how our community engages in the reusing and recycling process and were even treated to their own pre-loved books from Renew. Thank you to Mrs Beta Eatt for driving the bus and to Mrs Anne Davies, Mrs Judy Rodda and Mrs Janet Evans for assisting our classes on our excursion. We would also like to thank Mr Matt Webb who provided us with an informative session at Blackwood Waste and Mrs Jill Trethowan, Mrs Francis Owen and Mrs Kaye Brockman for allowing all students in to Renew at once. Good luck to all our Year 2 parents and your quest to implementing your new reduce, reuse and recycling program at home!!! Mrs Susan Marsh, Miss Kate Forrester and Mrs Jeannie Kelly
