In an act of retribution the Staff (Mr McDonald, Miss Caldas, Miss McIvor, Miss Hewett and Mr Ringrose) were able to salvage some pride by taking out the Tractor Tube Derby, with the Students finishing a close second and the Parents finishing a distance third. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all of the parent, teacher and student helpers who helped make the day run so smoothly. I would like to especially thank the following;

Marcelle Howe for her continued and exceptional organising skills as the carnival recorder.

The Sports Management Committee members (Trish Norrish, Deb Elliott, Helen Wright and Sonya Koster) for all of their help and guidance in organising and running the carnival on the day.

To all of the awesome parent helpers who took the time out of their busy lives to assist in the timing at the carnival and at the trials. Your help was very much appreciated by the staff and students.

To the P&C for their continued donation of trophies, ribbons and stickers. The students really appreciate nice trophies to celebrate their achievements.

To Jen Spriggs, Sonya Koster and the Shire for allowing us to use the swimming pool and for having the pool in such a great condition.

To Darci Campbell for the outstanding job she did as the Race Marshall.

KDHS is always striving to improve their Sports Carnivals, so any feedback or suggestions would be very much appreciated. You can forward your suggestions via email to [email protected] or contact the school on 9831 2300. Your suggestions will be discussed at our next Sports Management Meeting, which is being held this Monday 23

rd March, in the library at 3:30pm. All parents and staff are welcome.

I would finally like to wish the Interschool Swimming team all the best at the Carnival at Boyup Brook today. Hopefully they can do Kojonup proud. Good luck! FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Peter Callaghan As we close this week we have only two weeks of school before the first term holidays! With Easter falling where it does this year Term One is only nine weeks while Term Two will be 11. Thank you to all who were involved in our Inter-House Swimming Carnival last Thursday – a much warmer day than today! The event was both well planned and well executed, two things that can be very hard to achieve. Today we have our participating students away at the Inter-School Swimming Carnival and we wish them well in their endeavours. This week has also seen our first week long program with Southern Edge Arts and in this week our students have been learning circus skills. I hope no one gets tempted to run away and join a circus! I have been working on the School Annual Report and anticipate having this ready for distribution by the end of this Term. Electronic copies will be emailed to all those for whom we have email addresses and a few paper copies will be printed and kept in the front office. If you would like a hard copy, please ask at the office and one will be printed for you. I am also developing a parent satisfaction survey which I hope to see going out around the middle of next term. It does seem that every time you go somewhere or buy something there is a survey in the mail to see how satisfied you are and invariably I delete them. I hope when this comes home you will consider it a little more than that! Although everyone here knows we can always do better, we are also pretty pleased with what we are doing so unless we get good reliable feedback that suggests the need to change, we will keep on as we are. Survey‟s, such as the one I am developing, will provide you with the opportunity to effect change and influence future directions. For no reason other than they deserve it, this is to thank the volunteers who come into our classrooms each week. There is a small cohort of regular volunteers and then a larger group of „parent helpers‟ who come into their own children‟s classes. After that we have volunteers who run our very successful and important Breakfast Club. Volunteering is a very Australian solution to problems that originally were the consequence of our isolated towns and is very much a part of the national culture – rather than sit back and say „someone should…” we seem to get on and say “well I will…” In the best of all possible worlds we would have more Educational Assistants, we would have paid staff to run Breakfast Club, just as we would have paid Ambulance and FESA staff – but we don‟t so we do it for ourselves. To our volunteers; thank you, you make a real difference in the lives of our students. And on that note, if you would like to find out more about how you can volunteer some time to our school, please phone the front office, 9831 2300. TEACHERS REGISTRATION To all our relief teachers please make sure that you have renewed your registration by 31

st March 2015.

FROM THE PRIMARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Jayde McIvor Swimming Carnival Well done to all students who came to the swimming carnival and participated in the events. It was so pleasing to see the high level of sportsmanship and competiveness between the students. Thank you to all of the parents and community members who came down to support the students and the school. A special mention must go to all of the parents who helped on the day doing numerous jobs, carnivals would not be able to run as successfully without this support. A special mention must also go to Mr Ringrose, for all of his organisation and preparation of the carnival, on behalf of the school community a huge thank you! Good luck to all of those students who are representing Kojonup DHS in the Inter-School Swimming Carnival today in Boyup Brook. I look forward to hearing all of the wonderful results. School Start Times Parents please remember that students are not permitted on school grounds until 8:30am. Teachers are often not in their classrooms before this time due to meetings and preparation and there is no one to supervise your child/children. Circus Week This week we have been lucky enough to have the team from Southern Edge Arts here entertaining our students with their Circus skills and performances. Each year group from 1 to 10 have been learning numerous skills however I am sure more students are excited about tomorrow as the performers will be teaching students‟ Year 7 to 10 acrobatics! Watch this space in the next newsletter for some fantastic photos. GRIP Leadership The Student Leadership Camp is on next Tuesday 24

th and Wednesday 25

th March in Albany. This is the first year that

SPRING VALLEY TENNIS TOURNAMENT

Team A: Isabelle Plowman, Lucy Johnston, Team B: Front: Lily Hope, Isaiah Reid, Harry Parker, Clancy Norrish & Darcy O‟Halloran Back: Annabelle Trezise & Fred House The Spring Valley Tennis Tournament was held at the Katanning Country Club on the 6

th March. Nine tennis players

from Years 5 and 6 represented KDHS. We were split into two teams, Team A and Team B. Mrs Tennille Norrish and Mr Ringrose drove us to Katanning and supported us throughout the day. It was a very hot day and they made sure we had plenty of sunscreen on and drank lots of water. We played singles and doubles matches against schools from Katanning, Broomehill and St Bernard‟s. Lucy Johnston, Clancy Norrish, Darcy O‟Halloran and Isabelle Plowman were in the A team and played exceptionally well. They ended up winning the tournament and are so excited to be given the opportunity to play in Perth. Lily Hope, Fred House, Isaiah Reid, Harry Parker and I were in the B team. We had lots of fun and played competitively throughout the day. We won some and lost some but ended up on top at the end of the day in the B division. I really enjoyed playing tennis for the school and will definitely try out for it again next year. Thanks so much to Mr Ringrose and Mrs Norrish for staying and looking after us. Annabelle Trezise

Kojonup DHS‟s unexplained absences are on the increase as the above graph indicates. It is very important that you reply to the school with either a SMS message, a phone call to the front office or completing Absence from School Letters which are sent home. Parents/care givers/guardians can inform the school of any impending circumstances that your child/ren will not be attending school by contacting the front office or a letter to your teacher. For all school age children to get the most out of their time at school it is expected that they attend school at least 95% of the time – equating to 19 days out of 20 days attendance.

LIBRARY NEWS Three picks for the week for Lower to Mid Primary. THOSE PESKY RABBITS By Ciara Flood This is a hugely enjoyable picture book with a great story and excellent illustrations. It‟s about a grumpy old bear that is happy living alone. Until, that is, a family of pesky rabbits move in next door and become his neighbours. They try to make friends with an increasingly angry bear until they get the message and leave him alone. After some time the grumpy old bear realises that his lonely life needs a change!

BARKY THE BARKY DOG and TEN UNLUCKY PIRATES By Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton These two titles are new „Little Treehouse‟ stories adapted from the best-selling and much enjoyed 13 and 26 Storey Treehouse stories by these very funny guys. They are clever and appealing - and the perfect read for lower primary.

Any questions, please come and see me at the library or call 9831 2300. Sonya Koster

BOOK CLUB NEWS Thank you for supporting our Book Club. The Issue Two order has earned us $276.00 worth of Scholastic Rewards for the school to redeem for new resources. Issue Two has been ordered and should be here next week. I have been getting a few enquiries about the LOOP ordering system. We are not a LOOP school at this stage. It looks like a great idea and I will certainly let you all know if and when we join LOOP. Sonya Koster

GENERAL LUNCHBOX TIPS Recess or Snack Ideas

Recess is a great time to get kids to eat their vegetables and fruit. Cutting them into interesting shapes can make them fun and easy to eat. Some ideas include:

Carrot, celery, cucumber or capsicum sticks

Olives, cherry tomatoes, tomato wedges or small button mushrooms

Cauliflower or broccoli cut up into small florets

Sprouts, snow peas, green beans or baby corn

Mini salads such as coleslaw, potato or a green salad

Serve veges with dip like hommus, tzatziki or cream cheese

Cut up an apple or orange into segments and then wrap whole in plastic wrap or place into a small container

Pre-peel oranges and mandarins

Chop softer fruit such as strawberries, pear, kiwifruit, pineapple or stone fruit. Be sure to pack a fork or spoon.

You can write a message to your child on banana skins with a biro as a fun way to get them to look in their lunchbox

Freeze grapes, pineapple, orange or mandarin segments and serve in water tight container to catch any juice when it defrosts.

Other recess ideas include:

Plain popcorn

Dried fruit and nuts

Yoghurt- cheaper to buy in a big tub and serve in small containers

Cut up cheese cubes or sticks

Fruit or vege pikelets and muffins

Baked beans or spaghetti served in a small container with a form

Healthy homemade slices such as muesli slice or carrot cake slice. Source: Lunchbox Tips (Foodbank)

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE 2016

Last month we had students depart to Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Hungary, Sweden, Italy, Denmark, Switzerland, Japan and France though there are a lot more countries that we exchange too as well. If you are interested in applying for next year, here's some information you might want to know: Student's timeframe; · 12 months · Hosted quarterly · Leave mid-January 2016, return mid-January 2017.

Expectations during exchange: · Learn their countries language · Students will be expected to attend regular Host club Rotary meetings and events · Attend High School for the duration of their exchange · Get involved in Community Events · Promote their country – Australia.

Eligibility for Youth Exchange: · Targeting students 15 but less than 18.2 months as of mid January, 2016.

qualifying students. · Proficiency or capability to learn another language. Selection Criteria: Students complete an initial application, applications close March 31
