Welcome to Students and Parents:

“Developing lifelong learners who are respectful, resilient, strive for excellence and are productive members of their community.”

It is with great pleasure that we take this opportunity to offer you and your family a warm and sincere welcome to the Korumburra Secondary College community.

Korumburra Secondary College has an established and well earned reputation for providing quality education for the students of the Korumburra community. This comes from creating a learning environment that fosters the academic and personal development of each of our students in an established caring school community.

All students will participate in a range of educational, social and leadership programs, as well as having opportunities for challenging and exciting extra curricular activities. Over the past months, our transition team has worked to ensure that we understand your child’s achievements to date, as well as identifying their future learning needs. Collaboration with Grade 6 teachers is a key to ensuring all students are catered for as they progress into secondary education.

The level of communication between school and home is a crucial factor in determining student achievement. Research clearly shows that parents’ interest in their child’s education is the most important influence on a child’s educational progress.

All our teachers would encourage you as a parent to:

Take an interest in what your child is learning

Help your child set goals

Communicate the importance of consistent effort

Provide positive conditions for work at home

Monitor and assist with homework

Participate in college activities

We endeavour to communicate important information to parents through:

About the School

Team Approach

Students are supported in their transition from primary school to secondary school by a team of dedicated staff which includes a Transition Coordinator (who is also the Middle School Coordinator), the Year 7 Coordinator, Year 7 Mentor and Year 7 Classroom teachers as well as our caring Principal and Assistant Principal. This team approach supports students’ academic, social and personal development. In Year 7, students have a Class Mentor who teaches them for 8-10 sessions per week and who is also responsible for monitoring and supporting their learning and wellbeing. Students are assigned a homeroom where they have a large number of their classes. This allows them the opportunity to form and strengthen relationships with their fellow classmates in a familiar and supportive learning environment. To further develop student wellbeing and connectedness to the school, Korumburra Secondary College also assigns an individual Year Level Coordinator for Years 7, 8 and 9, who oversees the academic and welfare development of each individual student. The Mentors work closely with the Year Level Coordinators to monitor student progress. The Year Level Coordinators are part of the Middle School Team which is led by the Middle School Coordinator. This ensures a coordinated and sequential approach to student wellbeing throughout their school years, not just in one year level. This team also has excellent student welfare support through the expert services of our Student Wellbeing Team.

A Smooth Transition

The transition from primary to secondary school is an exciting time for students and their parents. It is the next stage in a lifelong educational journey leading to new experiences and challenges. Korumburra Secondary College works in partnership with the local primary schools to ease students though the transition period. During the year, all Grade 6 students are visited by the Transition Coordinator, who will provide information about the College and address any general concerns. In Term 2, students are invited to attend the Year 7 Information Night to gain insight into some of the Year 7 core and elective subjects offered at Korumburra Secondary College. In addition, students are involved in music activities, interschool sporting activities and a number of extra-curricular activities with students from Korumburra Secondary College. In Term 3, students will partake in three days of Transition whereby they will experience a range of Year 7 subjects as well as compete in a Tabloid Sports session. They will also participate in a music extravaganza with our school bands. Students will also get to experience our annual Year 12 Fete where they can participate in lots of fun activities with all the Korumburra Secondary College students. Our Orientation Day in December provides students with a further opportunity to become familiar with the layout of the College and develop positive relationships with their new classmates and teachers for the following year. The Transition program continues into Year 7 whereby classroom teachers conduct an integrated learning program titled ‘New Directions’ which assists students to move forward confidently and happily. Students will also participate in the Year 7 Camp which is integral to settling into Secondary School. (More information about the camp is contained in this booklet). Our College also runs a Peer Support Program, whereby Year 7 students work in small groups with Year 10 Peer Support Leaders throughout the course of the year. The Year 10 students assist and support the younger students to get to know each other, have a student mentor, discuss school issues including how to be a positive school member and provide a friendly and caring person for the students to connect with.

Literacy and Numeracy

Assisting students to become highly literate is a responsibility of all our teachers. All subject areas value and place importance of students developing literacy and numeracy skills as appropriate in their areas. This embeds our College purpose into everyday learning programs and ensures that we are developing lifelong skills in our students.

Testing

Our teachers will have access to the Year 5 NAPLAN results (completed by your son/daughter in 2014) as well as any test results completed during Grade 6. This background information is very valuable as it provides a profile for each student regarding their strengths and weaknesses in the key areas of Writing, Spelling, Reading, Space, Measurement, Chance and Data and Number. Each year at KSC, all students are On Demand tested throughout the academic year. Teachers use the information provided to ensure they are meeting the individual learning needs of each student, and to give students a clear picture of their effort and progress. Once at KSC, students also undergo testing through PATR and EWrite programs. This testing enables us to accurately determine their levels of ability in Reading and Writing. Reading skills are further enhanced through your child’s participation in the Cars and Stars Reading Program, which runs all year and delivers instruction at your child’s skill level.

Year 7 Camp

YEAR 7 CAMP – Grantville Lodge – February 21st – 23rd. 2018. (Term 1)

All Year 7 students attend the 3-day camp. Students will participate in initiative games, “getting to know you” activities, water sports, evening performances, the amazing race, archery and many other games and tasks designed to build self-confidence, trust between individuals, personal and interpersonal skills. Grantville Lodge has an excellent high ropes course.

The camp is a very successful, fun way, to bring together students, Year 7 teachers and school personnel. It is an essential tool to ensure students feel connected to their new learning community and is a very powerful means of supporting students to maximise their learning opportunities for many years to come!
