Author’s advice: Read these directions entirely before beginningto fold this model. For your first attempt use a bi-colored squareexactly the height of the CP on the second page of these diagrams(approx. 25 cm to a side). There are two ways to start this model.Look at pages 2 and 3 for the second way to begin folding thismodel before doing the folds on this page.

    2. Bisect angles with valleycreases.

    1. Valley-fold the diagonal onthe white side of the square.

    3. Bisect these angles with valleycreases.

    5. Valley-fold and unfoldthe top right corner to theright edge at the last crease.

    5. Bisect angles with mountain creases. Turn the model over side to side.

    4. Repeat the last step on theother side.

    6. Reverse all folds on this side andcollapse the model into a narrow wedge.

Result of step 6. Continuationof the first way to start thismodel continues on the fourthpage of these diagrams.

2nd Way To Start the Model: Make a copy of this crease pattern (CP). Go to the next page.

    17. Valley-fold the corner to the lastcrease.

    7. Place the folded wedge ontop of the figure above andalign edges.

    8. Valley-fold the wedgeaccording to the edges of thefigure underneath it.

Place a copy of the CP on top ofyour paper. Align the left sides.

Score with a blunt point the darklines or...

Clamp the CP on top of your paper and creasethe dark lines through both layers.

I suggest you crease the CP first before puttingit on top of your paper.

Place the CP on the top of your paper andscore or mountain-crease the remainingparts of the CP.

Collapse the model according tosteps 1-6 on the first page.

    Result of the last step.

1st Way To Start the Model:

Continuation of the Ist wayto start the model on the firstpage of these diagrams

    9. Continue to valley-fold the wedgeuntil it covers the figure on the top ofthe previous page.

DON’T WORRY if the last fold (thebeak) is a bit short. It will be more likethe real kiwi chick but harder to foldthe model.

    10. Unfold to step 7.

    11. Mountain-crease onthe same fold linesthrough all layers.

    12. Unfold the diagonal. 13. Turn the modelover side to side.

    P

    14. Unfold the long valley foldson either side of the diagonal androtate the model 45 degreescounter-clockwise.

    45o

    15. Turn the modelover side to side.

    16. Valley-fold and unfoldthe bottom corner.

    18. Valley-fold the bottomedge up.

    19. Put the pleated sides on topof the folded bottom corner.

    20. Mountain-crease along edgesand between the dots. Swivel-foldthe bottom edge and mountain-foldthe sides behind.

    21. Inside reverse-fold thebottom edge while closingthe sides of model together.

    22. Unfold the last 2 stepsand turn the model over sideto side.

    23. Spread layers at the top of the model.Note: In the next steps you will change thedirection of all pleat folds below the boldmountain crease that defines the kiwi’s beak.

    24. Mountain-fold the leftedge of the model. The edgewill not fold completelybehind.

    25. Valley-fold again theleft edge above the boldmountain crease.

    26. Valley-fold the ridge created in step 24to the right while lining up two segments ofthe bold mountain crease (between the dots).

    27. Repeat step 25 on thenext segment above the boldmountain crease.

    28. Repeat step 26 on thenext segment below the boldmountain crease.

    29. Repeat step 25. 30. Repeat step 26.

    31. Repeat steps 25 and 26until the model can be foldedflat. Make sure to align theedges of all folds.

    32. Spread the pleats and outside-reversefold the model at the level of the nextdivision as defined by the dot in the smalltemplate to the right. Next view is fromthe other side.

    33. Repeat steps 24 to 31 andreverse all folds below the boldmountain fold.

    34. Spread the pleats and bendthe model at the site of the nexttwo divisions at the top of thekiwi’s head (dots on the smalltemplate).

    35. Do these next two series of mountain foldstogether starting at one side of the model andworking across to the other side. Do not reverseany pleat folds except for the sections betweenthe mountain folds. The front of the head andbeak will bend forward.

    36. Spread the pleats at the levelof the next division and turn themodel over side to side. 37. Repeat steps 24 to 31 and reverse

all folds below the bold mountain fold.

    38. Turn the modelover side to side.

    39. Spread the pleatsat the bottom of themodel.

    40. Repeat the steps you have usedso far working from one side tothe other and from top to bottom. When finished you should be ableto fold the model flat.

    41. Repeat steps 20 and 21.42. Valley-fold the head up throughall layers. The base of the bill shouldbe slightly below the top of the back.

    43. Fold the head backdown.

    44. Spread the head layerson both sides of the head.

    45. Undo the pleats in two moleculeson both sides of the head.

    46. Bend down the top layerof the neck on its hinge.

    47. Valley-fold the head up onthe crease of step 42.

    48. Valley-fold a layer on top of the neck.I dampen the layers of the neck before Ido this and clamp them until dry.

    49. Spread the layers of the body on bothsides. I do this prior to removing the clampand then remove it when the neck is dry.

    50. Spread the feet if your kiwidoes not stand up.

Display your kiwi to be viewedfrom behind.
