Sixty-one years ago, in 1955, our museum opened its door to the public. Since then, we have been at the forefront of innovation in and development, organization and creation of all kinds of exhibitions and educational activities to enrich the lives of our patrons with the hopes of consolidating their passion towards the museum's objective of creating an environment for the appreciation of history and artifacts.

In recent years, however, new cultural centers have been established in selected locations and have been able to attract significant crowds to visit them. We therefore need to refocus our vision on our museum of the future. I believe we need to develop new strategies to meet the needs of our society in creating and shouldering more breathtaking exhibitions. In 2016, our museum led by the ex-director Chang Yu-Tan has held a variety of exhibitions; 26 in total. They were: two regular exhibitions, one permanent collection exhibition, four international exchange exhibitions, one cross-strait exhibition, two local exhibitions, three China exhibitions, and 13 creative arts exhibitions. In cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, furthermore, we also presented compelling advanced technology-based exhibitions to attract the younger crowd. In the future, we will display content, style and subject-matter in all our exhibitions in order to create a brand new museum visitation experience for our patrons.

We take pride in and are mindful of how we have been maintaining and managing all our museum's properties successfully all these years. With that success, we will continue to seek out private contributions and to assess cultural relics, which now we have 73 items in addition to the 57, 143 items under our belt. Moving forward, we will pursue in-depth research and content development to fulfill the continuous needs of our patrons. We will also develop added value graphics, cultural and creative entrepreneurship, borderless partnerships and digital imaging, in hopes of cultivating a museum that integrates social assets, and a platform that develops living art and aesthetics.

Each year, our exhibitions and educational programs are presented simultaneously. This year, we will add theme-based activities, and lecture series to our museum-led workshops. In addition, we will roll out a brand new and exciting mobile-museum project. The mobile museum will visit every nook and cranny of Taiwan to introduce our museum to everyone with the objective of attracting their interest, involvement and visits to our museum.

Additionally, the National Museum of History publishes a variety of publications and monthly magazines Bulletin of the National Museum of History , and the annual books such as Treasures around the Corner: NMH Collection 60, Essential Taiwanese Objects from the NMH Collection and so on. The aim of publishing these reading materials is to add value to the patrons' knowledge, appreciation and experience after their visit to the museum. They also serve as communication channels between the museum and our patrons. Communication is conducted with a sense of warmth and care through images, humors and penmanship conveying Taiwan through history, lifestyles and the challenges faced by our peoples.

On 25 May 2015, the Museum received the approval of the preliminary proposal, The Greater Nan Hai Cultural Park, without declaring the integration of the infrastructure surrounding the botanical garden for storage of the cultural relics. Later on 14 August 2017, with the instruction of the cabinet, the proposal was renamed The National Museum of History Expansion Project Plan with additional information. This proposal will propel the Museum into the next sixty years of greatness. In view to this new project, from 2018 to 2020, the Museum will be closed to the public for renovation of the premises and the Taiwanese hostels, reclassification of the cultural relics, documentation, setting up storage space for collectibles and other tasks. As a result of this expansion project, the Museum will be in a more excellent manner in preserving its cultural assets as well as providing comprehensive quality service to its patrons.

The Museum recognizes and thank our museum friends and supporters, individual and corporate, public and private, to help us to preserve, protect and publicize the Museum's unparalleled collection of culture, history and artifacts since its conception. We believe that the bond we have will reassure us to achieve our ambitions to make the National Museum of History a comprehensive and stimulating space where the community can truly explore their identity, culture and sense of place now and for generations to come.

Exhibitions & Displays

that went into the creation of these films. In addition, Indigenous Weaving: Exhibition of Taiwanese Indigenous Artifacts in the NMH Collection was based on the NMH's own research, and exhibited in International Museum of Art & Science in Texas, the United State. It was the first time that 40 pieces of representative fabric exhibited overseas, including the works of the aboriginal people Atayal, Truku, Amis, Puyuma, Paiwan, Rukai, Tao (Yami) and so on. Through this exhibition, American people can understand the diversities of cultural appearance among Taiwanese indigenous' artistic beauty.

We had 3 important cross-strait exchange exhibitions in 2016. The Art of Pu Xin-Yu was organized by the NMH, featuring 45 pieces of works. As this year was the commemoration of Pu's 120th birthday, the NMH especially selected 45 pieces of Pu's works to exhibit in Suzhou Museum. The exhibition inherited the theme of the exhibition The Mind of Adherent: The Art of Pu Xin-yu , commemorating Pu's art achievements through exhibiting his calligraphic works and paintings. With the rare cross-strait cultural exchange opportunity, the exhibition not only promoted the rediscovery of NMH's collection, but also won praises from Taiwan as well as Mainland China.

Besides these exhibitions, NMH also devoted itself to the promotion of brilliant artistic works. For years, we have invited many achieved artists to present their works in NMH, showing their works of print paintings, calligraphy, photography, and sculpture, etc. It has been our mission to contribute to the cultural and artistic development in Taiwan.

The following is further details of some important exhibitions in 2016.

1. Keith Haring: Multiplexism (2016.01.20 ~ 2016.04.10)

Keith Haring (1958-1990) was born in Pennsylvania and became interested in art at a very early age. In 1978, he moved to New York to study at the School of Visual Arts. It was during this period that he began to paint on New York streets and subways. For the purpose of making art accessible to the general people, Keith Haring utilized simple and thick outlines with bright colors and created iconic images of pop art style, such as the well-known works Radiant Babies, Barking Dogs, and Twisted Kneeling Figures . Today, these icons have become part of the popular visual language and are highly accepted and well-liked by the public. While the artist passed away at a tragically young age, his works, with their socio-political ideals and messages, can surely inspire people to cherish the world around them.

In 2016, the NMH hosted 26 exhibitions in total, which included: 2 permanent exhibitions, 1 exhibition of the museum collection, 4 exhibitions of international exchange, 1 exhibition of cross-strait exchange, 1 exhibitions of local artists, 4 exhibitions of Chinese cultural artifacts, and 13 exhibitions of artistic creation.

Since its founding in 1955, NMH has devoted itself to collecting all types of art. Today we have more than 60,000 pieces in the NMH collection. To bring these works alive, we regularly select essential artifacts from our collection and present them in specially designed exhibitions. Besides the permanent displays of Buddhist sculptures on the first floor and collection highlights on the third floor, we also organized a special exhibition on exquisite embroidery from the Qing dynasty to illustrate their beautiful texture and craftsmanship.

With regard to international exchange exhibitions, NMH has long been an important venue in Taipei for the exhibition of classic Western art. Over the years, NMH has presented works by Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet, and others to Taiwanese audiences. This year, NMH organized Keith Haring: Multiplexism in cooperation with Media Sphere Communications LTD. It was the first major Keith Haring solo exhibition in Taiwan. It included paintings, sculptures, posters and graffiti created on New York subways in the 1980s, as well as over 130 pieces of the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection from Japan. It also exhibited his famous works from the Icons series in 1990, such as the Radiant baby and Angel . The exhibition also played the documentary The Universe of Keith Haring (2008) directed by Christina Clausen, which allowed people to feel the endless creative energy of the 20th century graffiti artist. Origami: Living World invited Dr. Bernie Peyton as the curator and many famous international artists of origami to present their works. This exhibition not only presented and promoted the art of origami but also stimulated the imagination and creativity of visitors. Picture the World- Burhan Doḡançay as Photographer was held by the NMH and

Turkish Trade Office. The exhibition included the main themes:“Ironworkers and the Brooklyn Br idge” ,“Wal ls o f t h e W o r l d ,”a n d“P a r a l l e l a n d D i s c repanc i e s .”The NMH inv i t ed people to see how Doḡançay captured every moment and told stories about memories, history and places through his photographic works.

As the NMH began to host exhibits on an expanding range of media, we organized Pixar: 30 Years of Animation . Through the concept art, character and set designs, storyboards, color scripts, 3D models (maquettes), and immersive installations on display, audiences could see the hard work, skills, and creativity

2. Beloved Baby Carrier: Tradition and Innovation (2016.02.02 ~ 2016.04.10)

Almost all creatures have the instinct to take care of their young, and so do human beings. It takes several years for a human baby to be able to move about independently. Hence, parents would do everything possible to take care of and protect the children, wishing that they can grow up safely. Since ancient times, human beings have designed all kinds of tools to carry their young, providing comforts to the babies and freeing their own hands for other household works.

While the forms and decorative techniques found on baby carriers vary with geographical regions, there is one thing that connects them- the thought of and the prayer for the health and wellbeing of the children. We can imagine how a mother will sew her love of the child on the surface of the baby carrier in the form of many auspicious signs. This not only represents mother's deepest love for children but also embodies the three core elements for the culture of baby carriers: fertility, blessings, and protection.

This exhibition is a border-crossing attempt to join academic, cultural, artistic, and industrial forces from the society. It goes beyond the simple display of objects and brings together artistic expression and cultural creative industry. For this exhibition, we would like to express our deepest appreciation to National Museum of Prehistory, Big Ball Earth Care & Humanist Association of Taiwan, the Department of Textiles and Clothing at Fu Jen University, and Les Enphants Group. They not only provided their treasured collection of baby carriers for this exhibition but also enthusiastically participated in the design of galleries and catalogue, making this exhibition richer and more comprehensive. We hope this exhibition could accompany visitors to experience human civilization and parental love from different perspectives. With this exhibition, we would also like to express our respect to all mothers.

3. Origami: Living World (2016.02.05 ~ 2016.04.17)

Like many art forms, origami began as part of religious rites and folk customs: money offerings in folded paper ingots, wrapping of gifts, and arrangement of dining vessels. Origami began to take part in recreation and entertainment since the 16th century. And not until the 17th century was the present form of crane and ship origami recorded in literature. We would like to express our appreciation to curator Dr. Bernie Peyton for inviting many famous international origami artists to present their works. We also want to thank Prof. Alex Yu from Department of Life Science, National Taiwan University for his great support and assistance. This exhibition not only present and promote the art of origami but also stimulate visitors' imagination and creativity.

4. Orientation‧Splendor of Flame: A Retrospective Exhibition of Lee Shi-Chi at 80 (2016.04.22 ~ 2016.06.05)

In 1958, as a impactful artist, Lee Shi-Chi, Chen Ting-Shi and Yang Yuyu organized the Modern Print Association. Lee was also an important member of the Tong Fang Painting Association. Aside from being a creator and an artist, Lee also managed his own art gallery to give more venues and opportunities for the modern artists in Taiwan and to increase the exchanges between Taiwanese and international artists. With his adherence to modern art, Lee kept the spirit of the painting association period in Taiwan. He won the 16th National Award of Arts in 2012 and fully showcased his capabilities. For this exhibition, we selected 80 essential works from different phases of his career as a retrospection of his brilliant artistic expression and as a tribute to his effort in rooting modern art in Taiwan.

5. Painted Earthenware Theatrical Figures-Folk Painted Figurines of Chaozhou and Shantou (2016.06.14 ~ 2016.08.28)

Regarding Taiwanese traditional crafts, Chaozhou crafts stand alongside the craftsmanship of Zhangzhou and Quanzhou. The Chaozhou traditional gold lacquer wood carving, in particular, is the most beautiful, and ranks number one in the Fujian and Guangdong provinces. Today, many of their works are still preserved, but most locals cannot discern the details of their origin. Just like the construction period of

Vivid Colors • Vigorous Life: Liao Shiou-Ping, A Mixed Media Retrospective special exhibition covered his early works as a student, various representative masterpieces of his career, and more 3D creations from recent years for a comprehensive interpretation of Liao's diverse styles of art. The categories included Enlighten‧Exploration, Temple Décor, Symbol Life, Seasons, Manikin, Silent Image, and Dream to showcase his oil painting, relief sculpture, and installation art. This exhibition is a highlight of the artist's lifelong passion and ideals, and we would like to extend our greatest respect to his commitment to his art and tireless work in teaching the arts for the future generations.

7. Picture the World: Burhan Doḡançay as Photographer (2016.09.23 ~ 2016.10.30)

Burhan Doḡançay (1929-2013) is a pioneering figure in the contemporary Turkish art world. He is best known for his various series of paintings inspired by urban walls. While Burhan Doḡançay's career as a painter began in the early 1960s, it was not until the mid-1970s that he discovered the beauty of walls in photography, which was the beginning of his monumental photographic archive“Walls of the World”, a segment of which was shown at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris in 1982. Besides the“Walls of the World”archive, he created other series of photographs focusing on the construction of skyscrapers in Manhattan, the New York Ironworkers and the Brooklyn Bridge as well as scenes and people he encountered during his travels. Doḡançay had received many awards in his lifetime. His works also appear in numerous publications and are presented in the collections of the world's most prestigious museums.

Tainan's Tsui-sian-kiong Temple in the Qing Dynasty Kangxi period, Chaozhou craftsmen were hired and brought here for the construction. Thus, traditional Chaozhou architectural art left its beautiful mark in Taiwan. The popular ancient shadow puppet show“Chao Diao”in Kaohsiung and Pingtung is also a legacy of glamorous Chaozhou opera. Although Chaozhou opera has become rare in Taiwan today, it still remains very popular outside the Chaoshan region among the Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. The Chaoshan painted Ang Gian Pian clay works exhibited this time can be considered as an ingenious product formed by the combination of Chaoshan crafts and opera.

The painted pottery from Chaozhou, also known as“Ang Gian Pian”, is a type of popular local lifestyle accessories. They can be played with, sent as gifts, or used in ritual celebrations at temples. They can also be placed with other offerings on altar tables to please the gods. Every“Pian”(screen) comes from a scene in Chaozhou opera. Like a stage photo, the figurines display postures of singing songs. Their lively expressions, vivid gestures, detailed robes and crowns all involve fine work and magnificent colors, displaying the craftsmen's skills.

In this exhibition, there were unprecedentedly hundreds of exhibits displayed. The exquisite workmanship and variety of the items were considered rare even in today's local Chaoshan region. Hope that while the audiences were appreciating the Chaoshan folk painted figurines, they could also gain an understanding of the cultural heritage and the beauty of the arts at the same time, and thus the exhibitions stimulated their recognition and interests for traditional crafts and folk opera.

6. Vivid Color‧Vigorous Life: Liao Shiou-Ping, a Mixed Media Retrospective (2016.09.03 ~ 2016.10.23)

Liao Shiou-Ping's unique oriental aesthetics of the Taiwanese culture is based on his diverse background, which he eventually projected into printmaking. His originality had already won him multitudes of international acclaim. With the diverse print art techniques he learned abroad, his contribution and commitment to the education of printmaking in Taiwan have successfully led the art of printmaking in Taiwan onto another level. Thus, Liao is regarded as the Taiwanese print master and father of printmaking of Taiwan. The Artist Liao Shiou-Ping gave a guide of his works in the exhibition.

8. Pixar: 30 Years of Animation (2016.11.11 ~ 2017.02.12)

This exhibition aimed to introduce visitors to the world of computer animation and to Pixar's creative process. The exhibition shows how Pixar artists develop three crucial aspects of storytelling—Stories, Characters, and Worlds—creating compelling stories, appealing and memorable characters, and believable, enchanting worlds. Through the concept art, character and set designs, storyboards, color scripts, 3D models (maquettes), and immersive installations, visitors were able to see the hard work, skill, and creativity that go into the creation of these films.

9. Priceless Sycee: The Ching Fong Tai Chinese Ancient Silver Ingots Collection (2016.01.08 ~ 2016.03.20)China has been using various types of currency for more than five thousand years. Among them, Yuan-bao , meaning the treasure of the Yuan dynasty, refers to the silver ingots or blocks made of sterling silver. Yuan-bao was hand-minted by different silversmiths, hence each Yuan-bao is an independent work of art. To promote the history of Chinese monetary development and to encourage the appreciation of traditional craftsmanship, we invited Dr. Lin Chong-cheng to present his treasured collection of more than four hundred pieces of Chinese silver ingots from different dynasties. These pieces are primarily official ingots and tax ingots. Chronologically, the exhibits range from the late Tang dynasty to the Republican period. The exhibits of gold currency were primarily from the Qing dynasty and the Republican period, with a few gold bars and gold leaves from the Song dynasty. We sincerely hoped this exhibition is able to open new doors for visitors to understand the Chinese monetary artifacts.

10. Auspicious Patterns in Art: Special Exhibition of Silk Brocades from the Qing Dynasty (2016.03.25 ~ 2016.06.12)

Since ancient times, Chinese traditions and history have had a close relationship with aesthetic values. People's expectations on luck, prosperity, and a good harvest are all embedded and presented as symbolic

patterns and images. With this exhibition of Brocades from the Qing Dynasty, the NMH would like to present unique knitwear from our collection, such as‘Blue Satin pillow tops for Kang stove-beds,’‘Blue satin piano covers,’and‘Blue Satin seat covers,’etc, all with auspicious symbols hidden in the beautiful, archetypal patterns of the Qing Dynasty. In general, there are 6 types of symbolic prayers“Blessings, Kindness, Longevity, Joy, Fortune, and Status.”For example, the peach represents longevity, the Buddha represents blessings, and the pomegranate represents the ability to have lots of children. These symbols are significant and almost inescapable from appearing on brocades, and have become a part of our culture and lives.

11. A Heartening Wave: The Jade Art of Tu Kuo-Wei (2016.06.17 ~ 2016.10.02)

Since he was unafraid of making a breakthrough in either traditional, or modern, or contemporary sculpture, the art works of Tu Kuo-Wei have always been outstanding. In 1970, he graduated from the art sculpture department of the National Taiwan College of Arts. Next year, led by Buddhist Master Hsing Yun, he conducted the entire design work for the Pure Land cellar of Fo Guang Shan. He then went to Academy of Fine Arts of Rome (Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma) in Italy for further study.

After 20-year hard training in Italy, Tu decided to return home and taught at the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts at National Tainan University of the Arts. He participated actively in creating hallmark local artistic work. In 1991 he created the permanent outdoor sculpture "Landmark" exhibition for Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts. In recent years, Tu has continued to publicize new works with passion, either in Taiwan or abroad.

With the purpose of showing different interpretations on the forms and symbols of drums, he chose "drum" as his exhibition theme in 2016, displaying 100 exquisite jade works. The full, bulging shape of the drums symbolized harmony. Aiming to offer audiences new perspectives on art, the National Museum of History is committed to holding art exhibitions with the new characteristics of the contemporary times.

12. Zisha Wares of Yixing: A Special Exhibition of Pottery Figurines and Teapots (2016.10.7 ~ 2016.12.18)

14. Exquisite Embroidery from the Qing Dynasty (2016.12.28 ~ 2016.02.26 Henan, 2017.03.9 ~ 2017.05.20 Suzhou)

In order to promote and encourage exchanges with our sister museum, the National Museum of History has selected some of its finest embroidered silk textiles (belonging to the“Yueh Tzu”artifacts relocated to Southwest China during the Sino-Japanese War, before there were brought to Taiwan) to exhibit in the exhibition“A Glorious Homecoming: Exquisite Embroidery from the Qing Dynasty”at the Henan Museum and the Suzhou Silk Museum. There were 137 embroidered silks and 6 plain velvet textiles, totaling to 143 pieces, exhibited. The beautiful decorative patterns on the silks represented a good omen and the continuation of peaceful, harmonious relations between Taiwan and Mainland China. The NMH would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Henan Museum, our sister museum, on its 90th anniversary !

15. Culture- Enlighten Every Path in Taiwan (2016.05.01 ~ 2017.08.31)

The Ministry of Culture transformed the first floor of the Xinzhuang Joint Office Building into a multipurpose open-space exhibition, and asked the NMH to organize and hold the exhibition Culture- Enlighten Every Path in Taiwan . Through the exhibition, we hope to communicate a broad range of Taiwanese cultures. For example, through the introduction of the soil and land policy, we could display the native value of the people on this land, and stimulated our audience to see our land with a new, creative view. This exhibition aims to help the local art to grow stably and to develop sustainably, and to make Taiwan a country of art through cultural engineering.

between 1980 and 1990. The content of the exhibition included: (1) Xiutang Xu Master and Student Collaborated Pottery Creation, and (2) Modern Yixing Zisha Tea Pottery Creation Display. This was the first exhibition ever held in Taiwan of Master Xu Xiu-Tang's works, and it opened to the public from October 7th to December 18th in 2016. Two special seminars – Yixing Zisha , and The Emotions of Pottery were held every weekend during the exhibition. And we also designed a new family activity involving interactive hands-on pottery play to encourage the participants to engage their body and mind into the activity.

13. Experience the Stone Arts: Shou-Shan Stone Carving Exhibition (2016.12.23 ~ 2017.03.05)

Shou-Shan stone (Agalmatolite) is known as one of the top four precious stones in Chinese literary circles. It is very precious, and has been listed as a sacred object of the royal court since the ancient times. Tian Huang Stone is a type of stone that possesses the 6 merits of a seal stone: refinement, purity, gentleness, richness, subtlety, and calmness. Thus, it is named the King of the Stones, and was chosen as the stone for sacrificial rituals during the Qing Dynasty. It was the most-liked stone among the literati and the emperors of each dynasty. A long history of excavation has testified to the rarity and value Shou-Shan stone. In this exhibition, there were 48 pieces of the Tian Huang Stone on display. Tian Huang is so rare and precious that it is seldom seen in any domestic or foreign exhibitions, especially in such a large quantity. This exhibition also featured the gracious and refined Furong Stone, known as the Queen of Stones, the translucent and charming Lichi Stone, known as the Stone of Concubines, and other precious stones such as the Shanbo Stone, Gaoshan Stone, Shui Keng Stone (puddle), and the Peach Blossom Stone. There were totally 140 pieces of seal stone collection on display. There were even more stone carving works from famous artists on display, and their works represented different styles inspired by diverse subjects. From the traditional button seal made in the shape of an ancient beast to the modern button stamp made in 3D sculpture and painting, these modern works have attracted lots of attention from the audience. The highlight of these works was the thin sculpture (low relief) which merges calligraphy, painting, sculpture, and multiple 3D landscapes made through the modern exquisite carving techniques.

14. Accomplished the conservation project of 49 oil paintings by Sanyu in the Museum's collection with the full fund provided by the Ministry of Culture.

The Collection and Preservation Division is in charge of collecting, registering, managing and preserving the museum's historical artifacts. The items in the collection of the National Museum of History are mainly purchases, donations, and transfers from public organizations. The two main means by which the museum acquires artifacts are purchases and donations. The collection is classified into two main categories: art (Chinese painting, calligraphy, Western painting, prints, photography, and seals), and artifacts (bronzeware, pottery, porcelain, lacquerware, jade and stone, metal, enamelware, wood and bamboo, ivory and bone, textiles, currency, literature and miscellaneous items). The museum's policy on new acquisitions focuses on artifacts that have historical, aesthetic, educational, and rarity value, and that represent the traditional Chinese culture, the artistic development of Taiwan, and international cultural exchanges. Because of the restrictions imposed by the fixed purchasing budget, the museum's collection priority is on purchases that can enrich the original collection and fit into systematic representations. Donation from private collectors and public organizations is also an important mean of acquiring new items. Through researches, exhibitions, and educational activities, the museum can perform its knowledge-sharing function through its collection and accomplish the museum's mission of collection usage.

This year the division has completed the following tasks:

1. Collected artifacts through donations from private collectors to enrich its collection and ensure their proper and safe preservation. Held three evaluation meetings and acquired 73 artifacts. The museum currently holds 57,143 artifacts.

2. Encouraged private collectors to donate artifacts. The museum has received 73 donated artifacts from generous private collectors this year, including 43 pieces of contemporary Chinese paintings and calligraphy from the General Association of Chinese Culture, and 24 stone tools of the late Neolithic period from Ms. Ye Shaoguo.

3. Accelerated the establishment of the digital collection information system, established a complete computerized database of the museum's collection for more convenient usage in exhibitions and cultural industries, and promoted the modernization of collection management.

4. Provided artifacts for the museum's permanent and temporary exhibitions, such as Highlights of NMH Collection, Brilliance and Splendor: Enamel Wares in NMH Collection, Auspicious Patterns-Exhibition of Qing Brocade , and The Golden Age of the Tang Dynasty: Tricolor-glazed Wares from Luoyang .

(6) Annually Published Special-Topic Books

1. Treasures around the Corner: NMH Collection 60 On the occasion of the National Museum of History's sixtieth birthday, the museum's staff, in order to express their deepest blessings to the museum, have especially prepared the publication Treasures around the Corner: NMH Col lect ion 60 . Select ing from the museum's collection of artifacts that are either their favorites although simple with uncomplicated meaning, inspire the most feeling, rich in historical interest, or tell the best stories. The authors have written in a prose form distinct from that of academic articles to present history through the origins of an item's accession to the museum's collection, by using the perspectives of themselves and others. In hopes to convey to the reader an emotional and detailed sense of history, consolidating the intimate relationship between artifacts and people.

2. 14 years of enduring great hardships in pioneer work: Bao Zun-peng and the National Museum of History (1955-1969)

This book introduces the late curator of the National Museum of History, Mr. Bao Zun-peng, the course of development that the museum took during his leadership, concepts and theories of museology, and the study of international museums. This book also includes memoirs and condolence letters written by Mr. Bao's family, friends, relatives, and children. The book covers three main sections: (1) Bao Zun-peng and Museum Anthology, (2) Bao Zun-Peng's Commemorative Anthology (3) Important events- Bao Zun-peng. We hope to take this opportunity to allow future generations to not only look back on the initial stages of the Taiwanese government, but also recognize the hardships that come with establishing an museum, and cherish the memories of Mr.Bao Zun-peng's ambition and selflessness. (Executive editor: Jia-lin Chen)

3. Handbook for Curating and ConservationAside from actively planning and holding exhibitions, the museum also implements various museum related tasks commissioned by the Ministry of Culture. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of exhibitions held by public and private institutions, but because the exhibitions are so diverse, while team members may not have enough experience, the process of execution may lead to disagreements and problems. This not only causes to arguments between consumers and exhibition suppliers, it also attracts unwanted attention from international media and news outlets. This highlights the importance of the preventing miscommunication and exchanging experience and knowledge prior to holding an exhibition. Thus, the Ministry of Culture commissioned the NMH to hold a“Curator and Exhibition Maintenance Seminar”on November 24th and December 2nd of 2015 and invited domestic

curators, organizations, and professionals in related f ields to contribute and discuss experiences, problems and risks of exhibition management through lectures. This will provide a foundation of knowledge, based on past experiences for newcomers in the industry to reference to. In August of 2016, the NMH organized, devised and published the Handbook for Curating and Conservation, with the goal of assisting future exhibition planning and management, and can be used as a reference any time.

Due to the popularity and location-based objectives of the game, Pokémon's began to appear in the NMH as well. In order to address the impact Pokémon GO may bring to the museum, the NMH became the first to hold a Pokémon V.S. Museum Seminar, which focuses on 5 discussion topics: (1) Reject or Embrace: The Museum's Response to Pokémon, (2) Virtual or Reality: The Joy of Catching Pokémon or the Safety of Cultural Artifacts, (3) Education or Entertainment: The Influence of the Museum on the Transmission of Knowledge, (4) Trends or Crowds: The Correlation of Allowing Pokémon GO in the Museum and the Increase/Decrease in Visitors, (5) Monsters or Ambassadors: Museum Marketing and Image Shaping. We invited individuals from the museum community, academics, the gaming industry, as well as gamers, media reporters and the general public to gather, explore and contribute suggestions on how the museum should react to the“Pokémon Cultural Phenomenon”. The result of discussions by museum curators and experts is as follow: Due to the conditions of our location, there is rejection, there is acceptance, there is also neutrality. Expert suggestions allows us to reflect on what it means to be a museum in the modern world, and realize our value to the society. The museum should actively face and participate in emerging current events. While adopting new technology, we must combine it with the museum's core values, professionalism, and industry, which is the foundation for sustaining a timeless museum that is engaging an invokes curiosity.

National Museum of History ANNUAL REPORT 2016

In the era of lifelong learning, the museum seeks to develop objective-based and content-oriented learning in museums through its distinguishing features and core functions of collection, exhibition and academic research. The museum continues to provide multiple experiential and interactive educational services that satisfy the needs of different target audiences, in order to achieve its goals of cultivating the public's sense of history, aesthetic and cultural tastes, thus creating a harmonious society.

Under the guidelines of the above policy and objectives, the core concept for the Education and Extension division in 2016 was to achieve CONNECTIVITY in terms of collaborating with various partners and expanding participation. The main task of education was not only to connect objects and collections, but also to link the outputs of exhibition, research and cultural creativity in the museum, and people's daily life outside the museum. Accordingly, the museum created diverse educational programs to fit different audiences' needs and provide them with a joyful learning environment and museum experience.

The museum's achievements in education in 2016 include:

1. Target-oriented learning programs

In 2016 we planned and delivered different educational programs and events targeting diverse audiences' needs. The audiences included adults, the elderly, families, schools (teachers and students), and people with special needs. In particular, we created programs based on the uniqueness of the museum to connect with collections, audiences and the surrounding landscape. For instance, we held a Taking a Stroll in Nan-Hai District of Southern Taipei event on International Museum Day, a featured summer camp Lotus in the Breeze of Summer Day for children, Teacher's Workshops on the theme of leisure education, and Let's fall into Art: The Discovery of Southern Taipei, among others. Our major objective was to brand the museum through various educational and learning programs.

(1) Lectures on special topics

On the basis of the different themes of the museum's exhibitions, we held lectures on special subjects on weekends in partial fulfillment of the museum's responsibility to conduct exhibitions and academic research. In 2016 we held 39 Lifelong Learning—Saturday Lectures on Special Topics, with a total of 2,562 participants. For instance, we invited Elyse Klaidman, the director of Pixar University and Archives at Pixar Animation Studios, to give a lecture about Pixar art and artists. We also invited artist Liao Shiou-Ping to share his experiences and achievements, and we cooperated with the Chinese Association of Museums, inviting Emmanuel Delbouis, a consultant of the French Ministry of Culture and Communications, to give a lecture entitled Co-branding: Museum Brands and Fashion Brands.

(2) Festival projects, holiday events and learning spaces for special exhibitions

To expand the museums' permanent and temporary exhibition activity, we hold educational events and experience-based activities on weekends and holidays on a regular basis. In 2016 we held 26 events with a total of 7,093 people participating. For instance, we held A Fortunate Year of the Monkey: A Blessing from the Museum which provided audiences with New Year Couplets on New Year's Eve. On the first and second day of Chinese New Year (February 8th and February 9th), the first 200 entrants were given free special edition magnets based on the collection in the museum. We also held The Sketch with a Blessing on Chinese New Year. On Women and Children's Day, we held The Special Events for Graffiti, Origami and Baby Carriers. We also planned programs for other holidays, such as The Dough Modeling for

the Monsters in the Museum for Halloween and Let's Cosplay the Pixar Characters for Christmas. In addition, we created a learning space inside the Painted Earthenware Theatrical Figures: Folk

Painted Figurines of Chaozhou and Shantou exhibition hall. The learning space was divided into several areas, such as Dressing up like Folk Painted Figurines, The Reorganization of Different Figures, New Designs for the Posters of the Folk Painted Figurines of Chaozhou and Shantou and Let's Read the Opera-related Books, to inspire people learning the charms of Folk Painted Figurines. During the exhibition, there were programs on Saturdays specifically targeting family audiences, including Storytelling: The Stories of Folk Painted Figurines, Make a Coaster of Folk Painted Figurines using Decoupage Techniques and Creating an Animation for Folk Painted Figurines which attracted more than 100 people to participate every week.

For instance, we held two Teachers Workshops in 2016, for the exhibitions, Keith Haring: Multiplexism and Pixar: 30 Years of Animation. Lifelong Learning Workshops on Saturdays, including the Art of Quilt-making workshops and the Leather Carving workshops, targeted adult audiences. The“Life is Making by Writing”workshops presented the joy of writing including calligraphy, seal carving, and movable-type printing.

In addition, the Lotus in the Summer Breeze camp, which was specially designed and planned for elementary school children, was held during the summer vacation. We combined the elements from Lotus-related collections in the museum and the Lotus Lake in the Botanical Garden in order to provide interesting sessions involving history, nature, art and humanity. This offered participants a wonderful museum experience through various sensations, innovative thinking, learning by doing and cooperating with others

(4) Special Projects

Special projects with the theme of special exhibitions and special occasions were planned and designed, with a total of 42 events held and 19,000 people participating in 2016.

For the Pixar: 30 Years of Animation exhibition, we held a series of learning programs based on the core concept of Pixar and I. We connect three major elements of Pixar in terms of animation techniques, storytelling and creativity to enable the audience to recall their memories and experiences of Pixar animations and stories. For example, we invited a renowned animation artist and director in Taiwan to take part the project Note Me which asked people to share personal memories and stories related to Pixar animation movies using Post It notes. At the end of the project, we made an animation show over 10,000 Post-It notes to illustrate the connections between Pixar, the Taiwanese director, the Taiwanese people and the museum.

The museum also cooperated with Taipei National University of the Arts to organize Careo of Tnua in NMH. In the autumn sessions, three series of courses on professional development and life aesthetics were held, including The Research and Development of a Museum Shop and Its Merchandise, The Arts Of Sanyu and Strolling Around Southern Taipei: Discovering The Historic Buildings . The programs were aimed at interpreting cultural value in terms of both content and economics.

(5) Broadening the Museum’s accessibility and audience engagement

In an effort to be more involved, the museum collaborated with communities, institutions and organizations to utilize its limited resources and to maximize the goal of accessibility to audiences with different backgrounds.

For example, we invited children and other residents from households with below average income in the Zhong Qin neighborhood to the museum. We also cooperated with Go-South Urological Foundation, Heping Fuyou Branch (Fuyou), Department of Health Taipei City Government, Hsin-Yi Foundation, Hoi Toy & Play Corp. and Yuen Foong Yu Group, etc. to organize various activities for people with special needs.

The museum has participated in the Creative-aging Project in 2016 and promoted services and learning programs for the elderly with Tainan National University of the Arts and other museums in Taiwan. We held a Museum Creative-aging Workshop on November 24th and a Museum Services for The Elderly Lecture on November 28th. Targeting different audiences, there were several events including An Animation Workshop and Play at the Museum for elderly people with dementia, their care givers and other elderly people from neighborhoods such as Zhongzheng District. We are also looking forward to working with different groups to strengthen relevant competence of our educators and volunteers and provide better services for the elderly.

2. The mobile museum: education and extension beyond the museum’s walls

In order to serve more people outside Taipei and places with fewer public resources, the museum refitted a 40-foot truck as a mobile museum in 2001 and another one in 2008, the first of their kind in Taiwan. Since then, the two mobile museums have toured to different schools and communities around Taiwan and have served over 330 places and 800,000 people.

In 2016, the museum renovated one of the mobile museums, entitled Come and Look! A Cool Adventure of Reality and Imagination, an interactive exhibition based on collections with animal motifs, and used 3D printing to enrich visitor experiences and education services, and also to link the museum itself.

In 2016, from January to December, the mobile museums toured 13 sites in Kaohsiung City and Chiayi County, serving 75,361 people. Among them, the Chinese Coinage through the Dynasties from the museum's Collection traveled to Kaohsiung City and visited Qishan District, Luzhu District, Tianliao District, Lingya District, Ziguan District, Yong'an District, Gangshan District and Qiaotou District, attracting a total audience of some 34,873 people. Come and Look! A Cool Adventure of Reality and Imagination toured in Budai Township, Minxiong Township, Puzi City, Chiayi County, Dongshi Township and Xingang Township, serving 40,488 people.

3. Empowering Our Volunteers

In order to make good use of the human resources offered by the general public, we continued to actively recruit museum volunteers and strengthened the volunteers training program. At present the museum boasts a total of 242 volunteers operating in the Exhibition Division, Education and Extension Division, Collection Division and Research Division. They provide services such as audience services, guided exhibition tours, administration, and assistance with activities. In 2016, the total number of service hours provided by our volunteer reached approximately 37,594.5 hours.

Meanwhile, the volunteer service of the museum celebrated its 21st anniversary and published a special edition,“The Vitality of Volunteers @ NMH ,”in 2016. In addition, the museum volunteer sodality was named“best in country”by the Ministry of Culture.

The museum has continued to engage in close cooperation and exchanges with schools at all levels and other organizations. We initiated a scheme to enable students from junior and senior high schools in Taipei to participate in our Service Program. There were 278 participants from 145 schools involved in this program, contributing a total of 3,016 service hours.

4. Visitor Survey

To understand the needs, experiences and satisfactions of our audiences, the museum continued to develop its visitor surveys in 2016. In a pioneering exercise this year, the data was collected using mobile devices, Wi-Fi and Internet surveys in place of traditional paper questionnaires. A total of 1,352 valid surveys were received from visitors to the NMH between June 1st and October 31st 2016.

The results show that there were more female visitors (59%) than male visitors (41%). Visitors to the museum were most likely to be aged between 35 to 44 years old (21%) and 45 to 54 years old (19%). More than 70% of visitors live in Taipei and New Taipei City.

As to visiting behavior, most visitors came to the museum“for special exhibitions”(28%), while 24 % came“for leisure activities”and 22% were“just passing by”. Most had heard about the museum from the Internet and Facebook (35%), or from their friends or relatives (22%), and most of the visitors (33%) came with their families. Among those who visited the museum last year, 58% had been to the museum once or twice before, whereas 23% had already been to the museum three or four times. Sixteen percent of visitors had been to the museum more than five times. As for visiting frequency, 34% of the visitors went to museums or art galleries one to two times annually, while 33% of the visitors visited museums or art galleries more than five times per year. Also, the percentage of visitors coming to the museums or art galleries three and four times annually was 31%. It can be inferred that most of the visitors had visited the museum previously. The length of time they spent at the museum was 1 to 2 hours (42%), and 2 to 3 hours (30%).

In the“Performance Analysis”section, visitors evaluated the importance of the museum service as 93%. 90% of visitors would like to visit the museum again and are willing to recommend the museum to others. The survey also indicated that visitors selected the visiting environment and staff service as the two highest ranking aspects, both at 91%. 66% of visitors, however, suggested that the lack of places to rest in the museum was an aspect that needed to be improved.

In addition, we have conducted qualitative and quantitative surveys on key educational programs in order to provide better service. The questionnaire included a Performance Analysis which indicated that over 90% of the visitors were satisfied. Also, we observed that the participants' behaviors generally reflected their preferences.

Creativity & Marketing

The National Museum of History (NMH) has relentlessly promoted its cultural development and cross-field collaborations through its collections. And NMH also gives the image licenses of its collections to enterprises to develop cultural creative products, in order to activate the usage of the collections and to make our daily life the media of art creation. The Creativity and Marketing Division in NMH has applied itself to the aforementioned goals. And the following report is the accomplishments of the Creativity and Marketing Division in NMH in 2016.

1. Digital Archives for Image Licensing and Value-Added Use

In addition to promotional use, the images of the NMH's collections are also used as the inspirational resources for designing cultural and creative products. According to our selling experiences and the practicality researches, NMH has selected 200 images from its collections to make them licensable. The images are subcategorized into six themes: 1. Annual Special Series, 2. NMH Treasure Series, 3. Phoenix Series, 4. Oriental Humanity Series, 5. Fortune & Wealth Series, and 6. Lotus Series. NMH had licensed 156 images. And the images have been used 390 times on 362 cultural creative industry products in total, including 335 cases of stationery and cultural creativity merchandises, 22 cases of commercial prints, and 5 cases of commercial display decoration and video use.

The NMH has cooperated with the Institute for Information Industry and joined the“Digital Archives Licensing Platform”of the Ministry of Science and Technology in order to transform the images of its collections into serviceable cultural and creative materials. In the“National E-learning & Digital Archives Project,”all the digital images, metadata, digital audios and videos, and other cultural and creative works can be the potential licensing objects. The NMH also devotes itself to the promotion of the public's cultural welfare and started a new plan in October. Through cultural and creative industries, the museum plays the role of a platform on which enterprises are encouraged to contribute to and give back to society and the disadvantaged are given a chance to join into the manufacturing processes.

2. Government Resources Integration for Cultural and Creative Industries Promotion Upgrading

To further share the 10,000 licensed images and NMH's cultural and creative resources with the public, the museum launched“The Promotive Project for Cultural and Creative Industries,”supported by the National Science and Technology Development Fund and the Ministry of Culture of the Executive Yuan. To build NMH's brand, the museum has organized three sub-projects to achieve the best effectiveness in NMH's cultural and creative industries. The projects were implemented on December 31th, 2016, and the results of the projects are shown below:

4. New Selling Avenues Expansion and Effectiveness Improvement in NMH's Cultural and Creative Industries

NMH has 9 museum shops, as 7 of them are opened in the restricted areas in Taoyuan, Songshan, Hualien, and Kaohsiung International Airports. Apart from the National Palace Museum, NMH is one of the only two museums which own museum shops in the international airports. To expand new selling avenues, NMH has set up both“stores”and“counters”with more fluidity. In 2016, NMH had franchised multiple retail counters in Taipei 101 (89th floor), Songshan Cultural and Creative Park (Design Pin), Taiwan Handicraft Promotion Center, National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute, San Want Residences Taipei, Mayor's Residence Art Salon, Taipei Story House, and in the“Funny in STAGE ”event in Pier-2 Art Center (Kaohsiung).

To expand the selling avenues and to enhance the marketing efficiency, NMH issues the“This Magazine”both in Mandarin and in English version, for the purpose of introducing the cultural and creative industries in NMH to the world. To spread the information about the images licensing services, the museum has also issued licensing manual to introduce the cultural and creative products in NMH to the enterprises.

In addition, any exceptional performance of museum staff will be rewarded accordingly. This year, the Personnel Selection and Evaluation Committee held six meetings and the Research Staff Assessment Committee was appointed three times.

4. Education and Training

This year, the museum's annual training program aimed at fulfilling the government's lifelong learning campaign, creating organizational vigor, enhancing vocational knowledge and skills, and building an organization founded on learning. The Inception

The Museum was built in 1955. Since then it has been put into good use and advancing with the times to achieve its mission and commission. However, as time went by for sixty plus years now, the Museum has aged with limited storage space and many defects. It has turned into an unfavorable environment as a modernized Museum. With the challenge of globalization, if it is being left alone and do nothing, it will soon be erased by the times ruthlessly and forgotten forever.

In view of the circumstance, the Museum raised the National Museum of History Upgrade and Expansion Project Plan. With the approval given by the cabinet on 14 August 2017, the complete Museum modernized plan stated the tasks that are needed to be done. The identified tasks including to create more storage and exhibition space, to implement comprehensive operations and management systems, to repair and reuse the premises and the Taiwanese hostels, to conduct reclassification and documentation of the cultural relics, and other tasks.

We believe that this master plan will direct the Museum towards a better, brighter and clearer future with the implementation of all the required software and hardware to sustain, strengthen and supervise our cultural assets, substance and soft power. Eventually, the Museum will gain its significant foothold locally as well as in the international arena as a reputable national museum.

Progress in 2016

1. Establishment and Operation of Visual Identity and Branding System (hereafter, “the VI system”) of the National Museum of History and the Greater Nan Hai Cultural Park

This project consists of the VI system and the video introduction of the mission prospect. To orient the core value, characteristics, and mission prospect of the NMH, the NMH hosted several Interviews and workshops on the aforementioned topics. And accordingly, the NMH redesigned the VI system, the related image design, and the commodity design as a result of the previous discussion and comprehensive rethinking. On the other hand, the theme of the video introduction was focused on the interdependent relationship between the museum and the local communities. And the video was also aimed to presents the NMH's new image and its social and educational responsibilities with a fresh interpretation.

2 . R e s t o r a t i o n a n d R e u s e o f t h e N M H Building, Guest House of Imperial Envoys Museum, and the Old Dormitories of the Bank of Taiwan

The project aims to found a solid framework for future restorat ion and reuse of NMH's historical buildings. First, through reviewing and studying the previous researches, deeper understanding of the uniqueness and value of those buildings can be manifested. And the restoration strategy should be devised with the aims of conserving the precious features of these buildings as well as redesigning them into new spaces with new functions. The detailed works include building mapping, historical background and oral history surveys, selection of special architectural components, plant survey, etc.

3. Spatial Planning and Development of the Greater Nan Hai Cultural Park

To transform the Nan Hai Academy and Taipei Botanical Garden into an archeological, ecological, cultural and international museum park, the project started with a detai led survey of the physical environments and the operational situation of each institution in this park. The survey content included understanding the land using efficiency of the site, the spatial and accommodation needs and limitation, the strategy for cultural heritage preservation, and it also evaluated the relevant traffic systems, and analyzed the target visitor, etc. The final database will become the basic reference for the spatial development scheme of the project. NMH's rebuilding programs and the building scheme of the future collection storehouse in Zhonghe have also been included into the objects of further survey.
