WE LOOK FOR HIGH-ACHIEVING RISK TAKERS – SMART SCIENTISTS READY FOR A NEW CHALLENGE

KGI Mission: To enrich society with breakthrough approaches to education and translational research in the life sciences.

The first day of your career begins at KGI | 1

STUDENTS LEARN TO:» Catalyze basic scientific discoveries into new products,

processes and services.» Address the business and ethical leadership

challenges confronting science and its applications.» Build professional skills essential to industry

success, including public speaking, team leadership and dynamics, and project management.

» Fully understand how the bioscience industry operates—including the intellectual property and regulatory issues so crucial today.

» Enhance interviewing skills for medical schools and future career aspirations.

» Drive the future of novel drug delivery options and personalized healthcare.

The bioscience industry is unleashing the potential to improve every aspect of our lives while opening up vast new career opportunities for those with both the scientific knowledge and business acumen to become leaders in their field.

Recognizing a demand for this kind of leader, Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) developed an array of professional degree and certificate programs that integrate science and business.

Our graduates work in top positions marketing breakthrough drugs, engineering solutions to global health issues and developing innovative approaches to reaching underserved patient populations.

If you too have a passion for science, and the desire for work that is rewarding and impactful, you have come to the right place.

KGI pioneered the Professional Science Master’s (PSM) degree, which unites graduate business and science coursework. KGI’s foresight has been confirmed by the more than 250 universities that have followed in our footsteps. KGI remains the only graduate school exclusively dedicated to preparing leaders for the life sciences.

Whether you are a PhD student or postdoctoral fellow interested in transitioning from academia to industry, have completed your undergraduate degree and are looking for a world class pharmacy or pre-med certificate program, or want to pursue a master's degree that uniquely integrates science and business with unparalleled networking opportunities, look no further than KGI.

“I chose KGI because of the close-knit community, industry connections, and great exposure. The program has been very rewarding and will help me with my future career goal of working on the regulations of devices and diagnostics.”

VILMA HUERTA, MASTER OF BIOSCIENCE

KGI faculty combine academic distinction and scientific accomplishments with business acumen. They bring expertise in bioengineering, computational biology, applied molecular and cellular biology, pharmacy, and bioscience business under one administration, with no departmental boundaries. Facilitated by KGI’s unique organizational structure and small, intimate community, faculty engage in interdisciplinary, collaborative research projects and novel teaching approaches much more effectively than would be possible in a larger, more traditionally structured institution.

Many of our faculty are current industry leaders and have come to KGI from well-established academic positions and successful biotechnology companies, combining academic credentials with a keen awareness of the industry’s latest developments to bring new ideas and innovation into their classrooms and labs.

Research at KGI is cutting edge and always evolving. We now have 20 “research-active” faculty: 11 from the School of Applied Life Sciences (SALS) and nine from the School of Pharmacy (SOP). Whether they are looking at specific diseases (orphan, autoimmune, neurodegenerative, or heart), advancing methods for the targeting and delivery of drugs, emphasizing vaccines and prevention, or innovating in the area of pharmaceutical production, KGI faculty are breaking new ground every day.

THE RIGHT FACULTY

“We are very impressed with KGI. The combination of strong scientific training and a heavy focus on business skills has created a consistent demand from our hiring managers for KGI students as interns and as employees. KGI interns have worked in several units at Regeneron over the last seven years. One unit refuses to consider interns from anywhere but KGI. We have hired six KGI graduates as employees and are very pleased with their performance and their potential.”

THE CLAREMONT COLLEGES

KGI is the newest member of The Claremont University Consortium, a group of seven highly regarded independent institutions that share a wide range of central facilities and services. Our students can take a broad array of available courses offered by consortium members at no additional fee. Connections with the Drucker Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University provide opportunities for supplementary coursework in management, policy and economic issues.

Patterned after the Oxford-Cambridge collaborative model, The Claremont Colleges consistently place at the top of national college rankings, including Forbes, Money and U.S. News and World Report and the Princeton Review.

Each nationally recognized college has its own campus, students and faculty, and distinctive mission, and each offers top-notch curricula, small classes, distinguished professors and personalized instruction.

In addition to taking classes at their home campus, students may register for classes among the 2,500 offered at The Claremont Colleges.

Located at the edge of Los Angeles County, the colleges generate an endless variety of intellectual, cultural and social activities, including arts, distinguished guest speaker series and a robust athletics program.

CAPSTONE PROJECT AND PAID INTERNSHIPS PROVIDE VALUABLE WORK EXPERIENCE

This summer, Claire Whiteside provided support for the Operations/Wetlab team at Transcriptic where she gained experience in drafting standard operating procedures and developed recommendations for future BSL-2 materials handling automation. Claire made the most of our KGI network and secured an internship with Transcriptic by introducting herself to the company while they were onsite at KGI.

KGI students get the opportunity to work with some of the top healthcare and life sciences

companies through paid industry internships and the Team Masters Projects. In our Doctor of Pharmacy program, students have on-site experiential education in the pharmaceutical

and biotech industries beginning in the 1st year.

DELIVERABLESThe Team Masters Project (TMP) is an education effort

sponsored by industry. KGI and the sponsor work together to define outcomes and deliverables for the teams.

Among its requirements, KGI expects each team to present status-to-date reports during internal seminars in the fall and spring. In May, each team must create a comprehensive confidential written report plus presentation to be delivered to the sponsor. Additionally, KGI requires each team to write a public report and make a presentation to the KGI community and corporate guests.

Each sponsor will identify additional deliverables for its team. These could include data sets, laboratory results, competitive analysis, business plan creation, completion of SBIR proposals and the like.

Any intellectual property created by the team during sponsorship remains the property of the sponsor. Should any team discovery be deemed worthy of patent protection, KGI will so advise the sponsor, and will collaborate with the organization in preparing materials.

INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS TO REAL WORLD PROBLEMSKGI takes the task of a TMP seriously, regarding the

project as the capstone experience for graduates of our Master of Bioscience program. The TMP replaces the traditional master’s thesis work.

THE TEAM TOMORROW’S BIOSCIENCE BUSINESS LEADERS WORKING ON CURRENT PROJECTS TODAY

A project is assigned to a team of three to five advanced graduate students. Focused and highly capable, our students have backgrounds in biology, bioengineering, chemistry, physics, medicine, and more. Many of them also have work experience with life science or technology firms.

Typically, student teams manage projects from September to May—spending between 2000-2500 person hours on solutions and answers needed to successfully address a sponsor’s business needs. Projects with shorter timelines can run from January through May. Additionally, a subset of team members can work as summer interns to jump-start the full project prior to the fall kickoff.

The student team—in collaboration with the faculty advisor and corporate liaison—develops a project plan that details milestones, accountabilities, deliverables, and timelines.

60% OF OUR STUDENTS ARE OFFERED A JOB FROM THEIR INTERNSHIP OR TMP
