PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

A big THANK YOU to our members and their families who gave so generously to the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal. Many collected five cent coins others donated items to be sold and many donated books for our book days. All this money was collected throughout the year, kept safely in the bank and a cheque for $750 was sent to the Appeal. Wonderful effort! If you watched the Appeal on TV I am sure you laughed /cried at the shear strength of these children, and in turn felt humble as we, enjoy each day at our age.

I have a favourite TV add. It is a Cadbury chocolate add, where a little girl gives her most treasured possessions for a block of chocolate for her Mother’s birthday present. For me a follow on from the beautiful children I watched on Good Friday and the strength / love they receive from their parents and the wonderful staff at the Royal Children's Hospital.

Money can't buy happiness, unless you spend it on others. Research has shown that giving makes us far happier than receiving. Numerous studies have shown that giving money to others or to charity will put a much bigger smile on your face than spending on yourself.Keep warm as the winter chill sets in.

Both Allan Leury and Alan Smith have been in hospital with knee operations,  Fran Robins has been in to have an op on her hand, and Sandra Van Twest was admitted into hospital with a heart problem.

We do hope all these Members are recovering well and any of our other members who have been hospitalised we hope they are also recovering! Please keep in touch with me as to anyone you know needs a cheer-up note sent to them!

The committee and members would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to our new member Manfred Kriechbaum. We hope he will join us in one of our many activities that we offer.

RCH Good Friday Easter Appeal:

Our Club have been sponsoring this worthy cause for many years now and are pleased to announce we have raised our highest amount ever of - ! The collection of 5 cent coins, book day sales, funds raised from perfume donation, and raffle of our beautiful Easter baskets, all contributed to this amazing result. Many people either donated or purchased items so a very big THANK YOU to all, we know our efforts would have been appreciated by RCH.

Another of our Big Nights with our very own Chorus Line girls to entertain us! There were a few children and grandchildren to cheer “Grannie” on and join in the fun, which meant there were 3 generations in the room… maybe some prospective new members.Our girl, Kayleen, on the bar to help with thirsty work keeping up with Bazza on the dance floor, with a cheery fire attended by Steve, and tasty pizzas for energy! Always good fun and our next one will be in July, so put in your diary so you don’t miss out.

Diane’s Calisthenics Girls:

What a feast for the eyes… they were so talented, confident and looked amazing in their costumes and we were just in awe of what they could do! Pure delight for us and it always works, the combination of clever kids and appreciative oldies! Thank you Diane, (our Chorus line teacher) for bringing them to us!

Bus Trip to Phillip Island:

A great day was had by all on our bus trip to Phillip Island. First stop was at San Remo to see the pelicans and buy a coffee. After a lovely lunch at the RSL at Cowes we called into the National Vietnam Veterans Museum. That was absolutely amazing we were also served afternoon tea of scones jam and cream. All up it was a great day with great weather and great company.

Carer’s Australia:

Awareness of this organization was new to some of us who had been lucky enough NOT to have needed their services. However, their range of help to those requiring it is very extensive, much of it provided by volunteers, like Helen, who was our speaker on the day. We are all going to be in need of assistance at some stage and sometimes you don’t even know where to go for help and what is available so it was good to made aware of this information.

Bus trip - Defence Force School of Music - Thursday 23rd May:

We look forward to our first visit for this year to the Defence Force Music concert on Thursday 23rd May. Being regular visitors to these concerts, we know the experience is fabulous from the sight of gorgeous men and women in immaculate uniforms, to their exceptional music skills and varied music styles. Every concert has been different but all most enjoyable. Not to be missed!

Arrangements have been made for us to be taken to the Simpson Barracks for the concert then on to the Watsonia RSL for lunch. Lunch

costs are up to you, but they do offer a seniors menu and food is good. The Concert is FREE and all we pay for is bus cost which will be $15. Be there at the Club Rooms at 8.45 for 9.00 departure. Concert starts at 10.00 finishes 11.30, lunch to follow at the RSL. Return to Keilor approx. 3.00pm. The list is out at the Activity Table so don’t forget to put your name down and friends are welcome. Please note identification either drivers licence or passport required for entrance to Simpson Barracks.

The K.L.A.C.ers - Walking Football Team:

Our Club walking football team has resumed play back in February at the Keilor Basketball and Netball stadium each Wednesday afternoon. Arrive at 12.45pm, sign in and pay $2 each for a 1pm start to warm up. We have a volunteer coach from Melbourne City F.C. named Billy.It is a lot of fun and a good aerobic exercise so please come and try it out, you may enjoy it and you get tea, coffee and biscuit’s for all your hard work. We are currently struggling for numbers and we need new and any former participants who are able to resume this fun activity.

There is nothing better on a cold winters’ day than a steaming bowl of hot homemade soup, crusty bread, a roaring fire, and your friends gathered around you to share. After that, with tummy full and feeling relaxed, our choir will sing a few songs to entertain us! Come and join us and you may bring a friend.

Monday, 15th July - Club Day - Pasta and entertainment:

For our second winter month, the menu changes to pasta, and once again we invite you to join us and pretend we have taken a trip to Italy and indulging in this comfort food! Seems to me after the shortest day in June, July is always colder so this should warm the cockles of your heart! So when your TTT (tummy touching table), sit back and our Ukulele group will endeavour to get your toes tapping! Friends are welcome!

Bottle Tops: A member has suggested a new project we can become involved in which would assist those requiring prosthetic limbs following injury or genetic defect. It is very simple, all it requires is collecting bottle tops from milk or juice

containers that have either a 2 or 4 inside the recycling logo on the underside of the cap, bringing it into the Club rooms and putting in a container at the Activity Table. Couldn’t be easier and you may provide a real help to someone in need.

Golf Report:

Golf in 2019 has got off to a very good start with an average of eighteen members turning out for our first ten weeks of the season. This has been a great turnout and we hope that it continues on. We have welcomed five new members from late last year and into the New Year those being; Bronwyn Batty, Catherine Clarke, Wally Joniec, Frank Millane and Basil Tiligadis. The golf course is currently in reasonable condition although the fairways do leave a lot to be desired. As is usually the case member’s golf is up and down with some very

good scores being recorded and some scores which you might say are average. Consistency is the commodity that is so hard to maintain. One thinks that this could be relevant to age and how the aches and pains are feeling on any given day.

Our self drive trip to Bright this year is scheduled for Sunday 20th October through to Friday 25th October. We need commitment to this trip, with our intention to have numbers and deposits finalized by the start of June 2019. Tentative accommodation has been booked for all those who attended last year, if however any new members are planning to come this year you need to let me know asap. The caravan park is very popular so it is imperative that we book as soon as we can.
