PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Meeting Report March 19th 2018.

Welcome to all members and friends and especially visitors from the Airport West uniting Church, Carol and Barbara and Stacey from the Milleara mall management team. Terri,

Rosemary and Declan are also welcome to our meeting today. Goodness how time has simply flown since I handed in my resignation 3 months ago and now am fully retired.

A busy few weeks are looming for many in the club with the Moonee Valley Art Show now only a few days away.

•The Women in Rotary Women’s Day breakfast on the 7th at Crown was a grand event with over a thousand attendees. Joy and I were there and chatted to all and sundry about

Rotary and its benefits for business and other people.

The club also supported the International Women’s Day breakfast on Thursday 8th March at the Moonee Valley Council with a table of 10, with students from Rosehill College and

Rotarians John, Marisa and me attending.

The evening of the 8th was a lovely “official” retirement send off by my Department and hospital with many of my old trainees and colleagues from the past 36 years in Pathology

attending.

•The 9th was my last day at work and many tears were shed then by all concerned.

Monday 12th was the Labour Day holiday (very appropriate for my first day of non-labouring) and I had the privilege of joining Marianne and Liz Gibbs visiting with our past Rotarian

David Gibbs. He has had a few serious health down turns but that day was very much with us and although difficult to communicate with did seem to know we were there visiting him. I

found out David’s aged care centre is just around the corner form my uncle and aunt’s home and Marianne and I dropped in for a glass of wine.

• The next day, the 13th, was an official visit with about 850 other Rotarians to Government House to welcome Ian Riseley a local Sandringham lad who is currently the

president of RI. I had never been to Government House and Alex, Steve, Gerard and I had a lovely afternoon tea in the ballroom and gardens.

The Airport West Uniting Church’s opening and dedication for their newly built community centre was on the 18th of March. We held out trivia night last year to help fund some

facilities for their socially isolated men’s group. The dedication was on the same day as the District Conference so although I was unable to go, Annie Lloyd and Betty were among some

of the KERC members attending.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT CONTINUED & OTHER REPORTS

• From the 16th March till today we were at the District Conference and it was well attended kicking off with a cocktail party at the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum with a cannon shot. Not too many

official speeches but many moving and inspiring stories about how to persevere against many hardships and how one person has the “Power to make a Difference” which was the Conference motto.

Although we were a small cohort of Bob and Janet, Chris and Gerard, Brett Alex and me, I think we represented Keilor East well and had a few nice social evenings. Bob will give you an update on next

year’s plans.

The Cluster group is holding a Foundation dinner on the 10th of April on a Tuesday so we will not have our regular Monday on the 9th and hope we get a good turnout to the Tuesday. There will be a

theme of “Ending Trachoma” with very inspirational speakers. The Waterloo Cup Hotel has been booked we would like partners friends, potential Rotarians and community members see what

Rotarians are up to in our own country. Minh has bookings in hand I believe.

Jenny Foster and I met with a couple of MVCC councillors this afternoon and discussed the possibility of working with them for a business persons workshop possibly in November. They will be doing

most of the organising I hope, further details will follow.

Ginny introduced our Chairperson for the evening, Past President Arnold Vandenham.

MEMBER NEWS

President Ginny ( retired and looking very relaxed) with Alex at the Reception. It was their first visit to Government House which was built between 1872 and 1876. It is the official residence of current Governor, Linda Dessau.

A note from President Ginny: Gerard, Steve, Alex and I had a pleasant afternoon at Government house yesterday at a reception for Ian Riseley and his wife Juliet the President of Rotary International. A local lad from Sandringham and he was the charter member there. First visit to Government house. Very lovely Governor, Linda Dessau, with short speeches from both. A pleasant afternoon for 850 or so Rotarians from around Victoria.

It was a glorious day for the Government House Afternoon Reception for Rotarians and Rotaractors.

Happy Birthday to Arnold Vandenham who came to Rotary on his Birthday (having celebrated with his family on the previous day). We wish him many happy returns of the day and a great year ahead.

The Keilor East Rotarians, President Ginny and Alex Billson, Steve Pennicott and Gerard Mahoney enjoyed exploring the magnificent buildings and grounds of Government House.
