Welcome Kankakee Community College student athletes, parents, Cavalier supporters and fans!
There is excitement and energy as we prepare for another year at KCC, and we are so happy to have all of you along for the jour-ney. Each of our men’s and women’s teams had a suc-cessful year in 2014-2015, and a few had extraordinary accomplishments. Cavalier teams and players from last year experienced successful winning seasons, national
(NJCAA) rankings and tournament appearances, All-Americans and Academic All-Americans, a MLB 2015 draft pick, numer-ous All-Tournament players, a NJCAA Hall of Fame induction, a National Tournament MVP, and our KCC women’s softball team was your NJCAA Division II National Champion. It was an amazing year for KCC, our teams, and our players. Even more amazing was watching the continued development, academi-cally and personally, of our student athletes.
The 2015-2016 year also promises to be an exciting one for our teams and our players. I am proud of the role KCC plays in the overall growth of our student athletes, and equally proud of how our Cavalier teams represent our excellent institution. The student athletes of KCC live our motto to Start Here – Finish Anywhere.Itismyfirmbeliefthateducationisthekeytoallofour life successes, and I remain committed to our mission to develop leaders. 2015-16 SEASON PREVIEW
CAVALIER CHATTER
NEW POSITIONS, BIGGER GOALSIn 2015, the Cavaliers won the Region IV
Division I Men's Basketball Championship forthefirsttimesince2010.For2015-16,first-yearHeadCoachChrisGardnerwasan assistant last season. Now, he's ready to keep the momentum going in the right direction.
"Winning Region IV was a great step-ping stone in getting the program back to national prominence" Gardner said. He hasbigshoestofillwiththedepartureof former Head Coach Julian Springer. Springer led the Cavaliers to three straight Region IV Championship appearances including the thrilling victory in 2015 over Kennedy- King College.
Gardner will be looking for sophomore leadership from 6"1' point guard Malik House (Racine, Wis.) to help lead the charge. House brings back the most expe-rience, having appeared in all 33 games (16 starts) and averaging 20.5 minutes per game last year.
Sophomore Forward Terrence Bush (Florissant, Mo.) brings back an inside presence to help bring along freshmen post players. He has an inside/outside
game and has the ability to stretch the de-fense. "He possess a mid range game that many people at his position don't have" Gardner said.SophomoreMikeWickcliff(6'4"from
Memphis, Tenn.), a transfer from Ancilla College will bring in outside shooting. At Ancilla he appeared in 29 games (26 starts) averaging 13.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.
Another sophomore who plays guard, Kevin Daniels (6'3" from Cincinnati) could arguably be Coach Gardner's best play-maker. He also bring back experience, appearing in all 33 games last season averaging 15.8 minutes per game.
Gardner's most athletic prospect might be sophomore forward Ken Odiase (Floss-moor). The transfer from South Subur-ban College is very versatile, can guard multiple positions, and has a decent touch from the outside.
Gardner is also looking for leadership from 6'7" freshman Latrell Tidwell. Tidwell will be making his long awaited debut after missing last season with a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament). "Latrell got a lot of experience last season in learning
the game from a coaches point of view. Hopefully he can take those experiences and apply him to his game" Gardner said.
The Cavs have additional outside shoot-ing in the form of 5'10" freshman Daizon Scott (Racine, Wis.). His development over time during the season will be something to keep any eye on.
The freshmen class also has size. Grant Billings (6'9" from Herscher High School) is a local prospect with a great upside. Chris Jacob (Gary, Ind.) is a long and mo-bile 6'8" player who brings a considerable amount of energy to the game. Simeon Lepichev (6'10" from Sophia, Bulgaria) brings versatility with inside play, passing and outside shooting.
Rounding out the freshmen class is 6'4" guard Terrance Hammond (Calumet City). Hammond brings athleticism and shooting to the Cavaliers, but what Gardner likes most is his discipline. "He is an Air Force veteran. With him being a little older and experienced, I'm hoping he can be a lead-er of action" Gardner says.
CAVALIERS ACADEMICSKCC takes pride in academic achievement. Academics is the primary component of the college experience for KCC’s student-ath-
letes.KCCisveryfortunatetohavestudent-athleteswhotakeprideinbeingstudentsfirst.TheCavalierscontinuetobringinstu-dent-athleteswhobelieveinwhatKCChastoofferandwillworkhardtowardachievingtheirdegreefromKCCandmovingontotheuniversity level.
CAVALIERS COMMUNITYIn the Kankakee community, KCC student-athletes serve as representatives of the college and its athletic department. Cav-
aliers student-athletes are held to a higher level of accountability and responsibility both within the campus environment and in the community. This responsibility creates a family atmosphere for the Cavaliers basketball team and strengthens the bond between teammates. The family experience continues beyond graduation as lifelong friendships are formed.
