Welcome Kankakee Community College student athletes, parents, supporters and fans!

As we begin the 2014-15 academic year at Kankakee Community College, there is an energy and excitement ac-companying many changes in the past and current calendar

year. We have relocated the South Extension Center in Watseka, the North Extension Center is open and houses our Workforce Services and adult education programs as well as being the site for our massage therapy program, the Manufacturing and Industrial Technology Center on Rt. 45/52 is open and the welding, technol-ogy, and other classes are running at capacity. Plus, we have just received funding for the construc-tion of an Advanced Technology Education Center.

Adding to those operational occurrences is the change in our

staff with a new vice president for instructional and student success, Dr. Michael Boyd, who joined us in May, and is al-ready making a difference in the lives of our students with his leadership of our faculty.

We have been fortunate to watch the continued success of our athletic teams, and you see a great deal of pride as you walk the halls of the college.

The student-athletes of KCC live our motto to “Start here. Finish Anywhere.” It is my firm belief that education is the key to all of our life successes, and I remain committed to our mis-sion to develop leaders. Our athletic program, and each sport, begin with the strong dedication of our complete coaching staff and are supported by the KCC board of trustees and our community. As parents and educators, we pledge to join your efforts to provide encouragement and support to our student-athletes.

MICHAEL CORCORAN, M.D. received his degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. His internship was served at Butterworth Hospital through Michi-gan State University followed by an orthopedic residency at the University of Missouri, Colum-bia Hospitals.

Corcoran then completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Ala. He is a member of the American Medical Association, Illinois

State Medical Society, Illinois Association of Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American College of Sports Medicine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthope-dic Surgeons and is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Corcoran currently serves as the director of OAK sports medicine. He is also team physician for Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais and several area high schools.

CAREY ELLIS, M.D. received his bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University in San Diego, and his medical degree from the University of Southern California in Los Ange-les. Ellis them completed a residency in family medicine at Kaiser Permanente in Woodland Hills, Calif. After four years of private practice in Los Angeles, he completed a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Oklahoma Col-lege of Medicine/Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center in Tulsa.

Ellis specializes in sports medicine, orthope-

dic medicine and sports injuries. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Practice and also holds a certificate of added qualifications (CAQ) in sports medicine. Ellis is a member of the American Academy of Family Practice and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. Ellis serves as director of sports medicine for Olivet Nazarene University and KCC and also serves as team physician for Bishop McNamara Catholic and Bloom Town-ship high schools.

The KCC’s men’s basketball program enters the season with high hopes fol-lowing a year that saw a top 25 national ranking and the second consecutive ap-pearance in the Region IV Division I cham-pionship game. Third year Head Coach Julian Springer has brought in athletes from six states, plus three international re-cruits. “We hope that this can be the year we get over the hump,” Springer said. “My first year, we made a surprise appear-ance as the fourth seed. This past year, we entered the region tournament as the number one seed and favorite to many.”

FRONTCOURTThis year’s Cavaliers team will bring a

different look to the frontcourt, with length and versatility. “Any time you lose an All-American at the post position, there is a concern,” Springer said. “But I am excited about the versatility that we added with all

of our post being able to pass, dribble and shoot.”

At center, Aleksandar Malinic, a skilled 6’8” 225 pound transfer from Gannon University will be expected to provide leadership and stability in the post. Also expected to compete for a starting spot is Dwight Nared, a native of Cincinnati. At 6’7”, he is a long, athletic forward who will bring a tremendous amount of athleticism. Latrell Tidwell, another Cincinnatian, is a 6’8” do-it-all forward who will contribute right away. Nathaniel Johnson and Ter-rence Bush are two skilled 6’6” forwards who will add depth and compete for im-mediate playing time.

BACKCOURTThe Cavaliers will again be very talented

in the backcourt.DeVantae Price is the lone returning

starter from last season (8.5 PPG). Expec-

tations are for him to have an even bigger role on this year’s squad. A 6’2” guard from Tamms, Price brings scoring ability and athleticism to this year’s team. Mykeil Tzul, a quick 5’10” point guard from New York City, was a backup last year. He is the front runner to be the starting point guard. Making a strong push as point guard is 6’1” freshman Malik House (Ra-cine, Wis.). Another wing,Elliot Sentence out of Great Britain (6’6”, 215 pounds), will contribute right away with outside shooting and ability to score. Kevin Daniels, a 6’3” freshman from Cincinnati is the team’s best playmaker. He also will compete for a starting role. Jaquaveis Al-exander (6’5” freshman; Marietta, Ga.) and Darrion Beane (6’4” freshman, East St. Louis) both will be in the mix for immedi-ate playing time.

BILL CARTWRIGHT BASKETBALL CAMP OF CHAMPIONS

This special camp is for boys and girls entering fourth through 12th grades. Campers are grouped by age and position. “We learn how to play team basketball,” Bill Cartwright said. “We learn how to build ourselves up individually and have some fun.” The focus will be on offensive and defensive skill development. All participants get a camp T-shirt, a picture with Cartwright and a signed autograph from him.

In addition to Cartwright, other camp coaches will be from KCC and other basketball programs. Some camp proceeds ben-efit scholarships for KCC athletes. CAVALIERS ACADEMICSKCC takes pride in academic achievement. “Academics will

be the number one component for the college experience of our student-athletes,” said coach Springer. “KCC is very fortunate to have student-athletes who take pride in being ‘students’ first. We will continue to bring in student-athletes who believe in what KCC has to offer and will work hard toward achieving their de-gree from KCC and moving on to the university level.”

CAVALIERS COMMUNITYIn the Kankakee community, KCC student-athletes serve

as representatives of the college and its athletic department. Cavaliers student-athletes are held to a higher level of ac-countability and responsibility both within the campus environ-ment and in the community. This responsibility creates a family atmosphere for the Cavaliers basketball team and strengthens the bond between teammates. The family experience contin-ues beyond graduation as lifelong friendships are formed.

Julian Springer has completed two sea-sons as the head men’s basketball coach at KCC. In the 2013-14 season, the Cava-liers ended with a 25-5 record and were ranked top 25 in the final national poll. In the region, they finished with a no. 1 rank-ing and a record of 9-1. KCC finished the season as the Region IV runner-up and ranked no. 1 in the country in field goal percentage at 53.3%, breaking a school record held since the 1978-79 season. The Cavaliers only allowed 53.8 points per contest, also the best in school history.

Springer took over the program on Aug. 9, 2012. Despite having one student-athlete on the roster when he accepted the position, he recruited an entire team and led the Cavaliers to the Region IV champi-onship game.

“KCC has a tremendous amount of basketball tradition and community support,” said Springer.

Prior to his arrival at KCC, Springer served as the head coach at Rock Valley College for two seasons.

Springer led the Golden Eagles to their first winning season in more than a decade, finishing with a record of 20-11 for the 2011-12 season. Springer’s only recruiting class improved from last place to second place in the region and recorded one of the biggest conference turnarounds in school history, going from 4-10 in his first season to 9-5 the following season.

Prior to becoming a head coach, he spent one season as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Jackson State University. That season the Tigers won the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season championship finishing with a 17-1 record, the best mark in conference history. Jackson State received an invite to the National Invitational Tournament. He coached three All-SWAC performers including SWAC Player of the Year, Garrison Johnson and SWAC Newcomer of the Year, Tyrone Hanson.

Springer also spent two seasons as an assistant coach and director of campus recreation at Alma College (Mich.). There, he assisted with a recruiting class that doubled its win total from the previous season.

At the time Springer was hired, Ted Petersen, KCC athletic director, said: “Julian Springer has a history of success working with student-athletes. Though it is important and beneficial that

he has coaching experience, Springer will have his biggest impact as a motivator and educator. His talent as a coach will be complemented nicely by his history of success with students.”

As a native of Chicago, Springer directed and coached a city basketball league for two years. In that span, more than 20 players earned NCAA Division I scholarships. Those players include Jerome Randle (University of California, 2010 PAC-10 Player of the Year), Jeremy Pargo (Gonzaga University, 2008 West Coast Conference Player of the Year), and Stefhon Hannah (Missouri University, 2007 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year ).

He also has spent several years coach-ing college basketball camps at Central

Michigan University, Northern Illinois University, and University of Toledo. He has coached day camps in Indianapolis, Orlando, Tampa and St. Petersburg, Fla. for the Black Coaches and Ad-ministrators organization.

Springer attended St. Ignatius High School, where he helped his team win the regional and sectional championship and finish in the “Sweet Sixteen” of the Illinois State Basketball Tournament in 2000.

Springer has a bachelor’s degree in recreation and a minor in coaching from Southern Illinois University (2005). In 2007, he earned a master’s degree in athletic administration while serving as the graduate student assistant coach for the Central Michigan University Chippewas. While at CMU, he also served as head coach of the Central Michigan Club Basketball Traveling Team and taught undergraduate physical education courses for two years. In 2011, Springer received a master’s degree in health, physical education, and recreation from Jackson State University. He is one of only a few college head coaches in the country who holds two master’s degrees.

He is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Black Coaches and Administrators Association and the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association. Springer is the seventh men’s basketball head coach in KCC’s history.

Chris Gardner enters his first season as an assis-tant coach for KCC. He joins the Cavaliers after years as a head coach of the Example AAU boys and girls basketball programs in Kankakee. Gardner’s teams have had success competing at several of the top tournaments across the country.

Prior to coaching the Example AAU program, Gardner has been an assistant women’s basketball coach at Moraine Valley Community College and head sophomore girls coach at Chicago Vocational High School.

Coach Gardner played college basketball at Elgin Community College and Trinity International Univer-sity. He also is in his fourth season playing profes-sionally for Kankakee County Soldiers.
