Pawleys June/July 2018 Newsletter of Pawleys Island Presbyterian Presbyterian LOVE GOD LOVE PEOPLE (Part II) Blue prints are vital to construction and building. Can you imagine a builder just winging it, without following a previously approved set of blueprints? There is no way that the resulting building would be able to stand on its own, or fulfill its intended function. Walls would not connect, be contiguous, or hold the necessary load. It is the same with us – we need to follow the Master Architect’s blueprints, as we are daily being built into His dwelling place. In May’s newsletter I wrote about LGLP – Love God Love People. Jesus shared His summation of God’s blueprint for living out our faith in Luke 10:27, LGLP. Sounds so simple, doesn’t it? Well, it might be simple, but it is not easy to live out this journey of following Jesus. This month we are going to focus on the first half of Christ’s call – Love God. How do we love God? I think the first step in that journey is to allow Him to live through you every day, so that He gets glory. The Westminster Shorter Catechism defines our prime purpose with the first question/answer: Q. 1. What is the chief end of man? A. Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever. Using this definition raises another question: What does it mean to glorify God? Glorifying God is a mindset and a response. No matter what you are doing, if your mind is set on Christ and you do what He would have you do, then you will naturally shine God’s glory to all those around you. Paul’s definition of worship can be found in 1 Corin- thians 10:31: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” In order to know God, enjoy Him, obey Him, worship Him, and give Him glory, we must first spend time with Him. It takes time to really learn someone’s heart. Trust builds up over a period of time. Love grows over time. That is why Loving God is simple, but not easy. Obedience and sacrifice are never easy. Our schedule and wants always battle against carving out the time to honor, submit, loaf, enjoy, and be with God. We need each other to truly love God. We need to be praying for each other, encouraging each other, helping each other, lifting each other, and pulling for each other. So, let’s double-down on praying for each other to grow in their love of God. Maybe pray through the church pictorial directory. Maybe start coming to Bible Study at 9am and urge someone to come with you. Maybe come to Men’s Bible Study on Saturday mornings at 8:30. Maybe ask some- one to be your prayer partner. It is up to you. The ball is in your court. Together we can grow in our love of our Heavenly Father, Who sacrificed His Son that we might be able to have a relationship with Him today and for eternity. Let us love well. There is no way that the resulting building would be able to stand on its own, or fulfill its intended function. Walls would not connect, be contiguous, or hold the necessary load. I think the first step in that journey is to allow Him to live through you every day, so that He gets glory. The Westminster Shorter Catechism defines our prime purpose with the first question/answer:

Paul’s definition of worship can be found in 1 Corin-thians 10:31:

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

In order to know God, enjoy Him, obey Him, worship Him, and give Him glory, we must first spend time with Him. It takes time to really learn someone’s heart. Trust builds up over a period of time. Love grows over time. That is why Loving God is simple, but not easy. Obedience and sacrifice are never easy. “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old

he will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6

“Then sings my soul!”     A  few weeks  ago  the  choir  sang  an  arrangement  of

“How Great Thou Art” and I truly felt like our souls were

singing praises  to God! At one point  the  sopranos hit a

high note, goose bumps went down my arms, and  then

tears ran down my face.   My point  is that music can ex‐

press feelings that we would have a hard time explaining

or speaking, and music can touch us in ways that we can

hardly describe how we feel or what has happened to us. Theologians for centuries are

quoted as saying, “He who sings, prays twice.”  As I grow on my faith journey, I am in

awe of composers who are able to write great music.  I am so thankful to be able to

sing and teach great music that enriches our souls, hearts, and minds. Amen.

June 3rd ‐ “Climbing Up the Mountain” ‐  an energetic spiritual that features our basses

June 10th ‐ “O Breath of God” ‐ arr. Larry Shackley

June 17th ‐  A new spiritual for us— “Joshua Fit de Battle”

June 24th ‐ “Jesus is my Song of Grace”

July 1st ‐ PATRIOTIC SUNDAY! Trumpeter Brian Buss will be here. Cookout after church.

It’s “Open Mic” Summer here at PIPC

Our “Open Mic” summer schedule provides us with opportunities to showcase

and explore our wonderful church talents! It also gives us a chance to work on solos,

duets, and ensembles as we develop the talents that God has given us.

*This is what we have at print time for the months of JULY and AUGUST. There will be

a Men’s Sunday; a Women’s Sunday; Leigh Eddy will sing and play one of her new origi‐

nals; Gail Holsclaw ‐ flute; Larry Thornton ‐ bass solo ………. more to come!

The Chancel Choir will not have regular rehearsals during July and August. They will be

sitting  in  the  loft when  they  are  here  to  assist with  leading worship.  There will  be

something  different  every  Sunday!  It might  be  a  solo,  a  trio,  a  trumpet,  a  flute,  an

oboe, a woodwinds ensemble, or maybe a choral ensemble.

Grace and Peace

The weather was beautiful and the food was wonderful!

The 4th Annual Choir Fish Fry was held on Sunday night, May 6th,

at the lovely home of Doug and Hilda Simon.

The last picture is of Louis learning to eat catfish with the bones still in.

“Don't let anyone look down on you because you are

young, but set an example for the believers in speech,

in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”

1 Timothy 4:12

. . .Were the words sung by our SALT youth on Youth Sunday! What a joy to worship with these youth who long to glorify the Lord. Congratulations to our nine graduating high school seniors, as they receive their diplomas on June 6th. Please be in prayer for these youth as they prepare to continue their journeys, either in a col-lege or university or on “The World Race Gap Year.” They all have so much to give and the Lord has big plans for them. Let the adventure begin…. June 9th-16th will find our youth and adult chaperones at Rivertown Salkehatchie in Con-way, SC. Please be in prayer for us as we serve, grow, learn and share together. We will begin each day on the worksite at 6am. Our work varies from house to house but we par-ticipate in major home repairs such as:

Repairing a leaky roof Putting up sheetrock Painting both inside and outside of the home Replacing broken windows and doors Rebuilding porches Rebuilding bathrooms Digging and stabilizing floors and walls

At 5pm the crews will pack up, head to the local middle school for showers and, then, head back to base camp for dinner. The rest of the night is set aside for worship, fellowship, singing, shar-ing, and listening to local history. Each night we will spend time in reflection which is an im-portant part of the Salkehatchie experience. At 11:00pm, we hit the hay. The next morning, we wake up and do it again. Please be in prayer for us, the staff at our base camp, the families we are serving and the speakers each evening. We are in need of bottled water and Gatorades. Please bring your contributions to the church office.

Holy Spirit You are welcome here Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere Your glory God is what our hearts long for To be overcome by Your presence Lord….

FAMILY FIRST. . .

Meet another delightful family - The Browns: Woods, Lindsey, Isla, Cecilia, and Woods. We are happy to introduce them as our PIPC Family of the Month for June. The Browns joined PIPC about six years ago after visiting multiple churches in the area. Feeling immediately welcome and included, it seemed a natural fit for their growing family. Now that the twins are old enough to participate in Children’s Church and JAM, this is a family feeling super excited to become more involved with their church family. Isla is six years old and loves to color, create Play-Doh masterpieces, and work on her jazzy dance class moves. Woods, age four, loves to climb, ride his bike, and practice perfecting his ninja skills. Four-year-old Cecilia loves to ride her bike, pretend that she is a cat, and do whatever her big sis-ter is doing. You have no doubt seen these three on the steps with Mrs. Lee on Sunday mornings. Lindsey is the Assistant Director of Sales at the Myrtle Beach Marriott. She loves Amazon Prime, a good period piece, and weekend naps. Woods is a Commercial Real Estate Appraiser/Environmental Consultant. He loves the Gamecocks, the Lakers, and the Rams...none of which get his full attention anymore due to the Disney Channel taking over their lives! Who can relate to that?! The Browns are homebodies to some extent. They enjoy short trips to the beach, Brookgreen, and Huntington, but otherwise they like being at home... hanging in the yard, riding bikes, and grilling. Try to spot the Browns when you are at church. Say hello and introduce yourself!

The purpose of the Administration and Personnel Team is to provide for an orderly, focused and considerate means for the Session to build a healthy work environment, and to define and oversee the administration of the policies of PIPC. A&P is a Team that is comprised of a minimum of six members: one active Elder who is the chair of the team, one active Deacon and four members at large. The A&P Team is responsible for devising and administering personnel policies, recommending compensation including benefits and overseeing the policies and procedures of PIPC. So if you would like to join an exciting Team that helps to review the per-sonnel policies of PIPC and make changes as needed, and provide, review and do evaluations for all the paid staff of PIPC on an annual basis, then come and join the best Team at PIPC.

DID YOU KNOW? TAX FREE GIFTING TO PIPC

If you would like to make a gift or fulfill a pledge to PIPC and have stock that has appreciated in value, did you know that you can gift the stock to PIPC’s broker, Wells Fargo Advisors, so that you will not have to pay the capi-tal gains tax on the appreciated value of the gifted stock? For more information as to how to proceed please contact Ken Dewell.

If you are at least 70 ½ years old and have a traditional IRA, you must start taking a Required Minimum Distribu-tion (RMD) annually. Did you know that all or any portion of your RMD can be designated a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) payable directly to PIPC and you pay no income tax on the PIPC QCD?

Both of these strategies may afford you a way to meet your giving goals here at PIPC and may offer tax advantages as well. As always, consult your tax professional regarding how these gifting strategies may impact or benefit you.

THIS IS THE SEASON FOR GIVING! GIVE TO ONE ANOTHER! BE A SHEPHERD!

Shepherds play an important role in our church by caring for and communicating with the congregation. Shepherds get to know their "Flock" and enable church members to feel support and inclusiveness in our church family.

Here is how that is done: *Care for a small group (called Flock) of 6-8 persons or households by sending cards for birthdays and special

remembrances. Cards, envelopes, and stamps are provided by the church office. *Contact those who have been sick, hospitalized, or bereaved.

Call and/or visit as appropriate. *Forward communications once a month about special events in the church. Events are emailed to you.

*Attend a training session to discuss tasks and answer questions. Only one meeting!

PAWLEYS ISLAND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IS YOUR CHURCH!

BE A PART OF A REWARDING MINISTRY - BE A SHEPHERD !!

If you would like to be a part of this special ministry, fill out the information and place in collection plate.

The Book Corner

Your PIPC Library collection has not only books, but also DVD’s. Check out the following which are featured in the June display and include many that are new to the Library. (Some running times include bonus features.) DVD’s For Adults and Youth: The War Room (120 min.) stars Priscilla Shirer and became the #1 movie in America. Using drama and humor it

reveals an apparently successful family to be suffering from a failing marriage until the wife learns how to use a prayer “war room” to battle for her family.

WWJD: What Would Jesus Do? The Journey Continues (94 min.) was inspired by the best-selling novel and

stars John Schneider and Lorenzo Lamas. A pastor promises his mother to lead his ex-con brother to Christ and a subsequent church robbery at gunpoint leads to an improbable journey of faith and redemption.

Is Genesis History? (101 min.), hosted by Del Tackett, creator of “The Truth Project,” utilizes a dozen + scientists

and scholars to look at the Biblical, historical, and scientific evidence for Creation and the Flood. God’s Not Dead (114 min.) has a philosophy student challenging his professor and proving to the class that God’s

not dead; and God’s Not Dead 2 (121 min.) where a teacher’s response to a question about Jesus results in an epic court case.

Biographies: Billy: The Movie (98 min.) about Graham’s early years starring Martin Landau, Lindsay Wagner, and

country music singer Josh Turner; C. S. Lewis through the Shadowlands (90 min. television version, 73-min. abridged version) starring Joss Ackland and Claire Bloom about Lewis’s spiritual crisis when his wife died of cancer; and Corrie ten Boom: A Faith Undefeated (55 min.) which chronicles her persevering faith and for-giveness throughout Nazi imprisonment and beyond.

DVD’s For Children: Owlegories Vol. 3 (39 min.) features “The Fire” – how God is like fire; “The Duck” –

about God’s greatest gifts; and “The Seasons” – what we can learn from them. This Gospel-centered animated series follows a group of student owls as they learn about nature, faith, and God.

Three additional Buck Denver asks . . . What’s in the Bible” DVD’s (from Veggie-

Tales® creator Phil Vischer): Vol. 1 In the Beginning – Genesis; Vol. 12 Let-ters from Paul! – Romans through Philemon; and Vol. 13 God’s Kingdom Comes! – General Epistles and Revelation. Each has two 25-min. episodes.

Congratulations Bible Bookworm Award Winners! Congratulations to Emma and Ellie Branham, Caroline Carmichael, Addy and Ava Hapeshis, Ava Leach, and Elise and Rhys Wahl for reading at least 10 books or 100 pages from PIPC’s Library during the spring semester of JAM! Each earned a Bible Bookworm certificate and book award. Thank you to everyone who participated! We look for-ward to seeing you all back in the Library when JAM starts again in the fall!
