We are now offering a time on Sunday afternoon for church members and friends to gather for prayer. Why are we doing this? Years ago I read a book by Charlie Shedd called The Exciting Church: Where People Really Pray. I have forgotten everything in the book except the story of a young man who was newly elected to the board of the church where Charlie Shedd served as pastor. That young man asked a very simple question: “What do you think Christ wants this church to be?” From that question came a second one: “What would happen in our congregation if every member was prayed for every single day by someone?” Charlie Shedd said, “That night he stopped us in our tracks.” The rest of the book is the answer to that question. And what a question. We all believe in prayer, don’t we? Even if we don’t pray very much, we still believe in prayer. So what would happen in our churches if every day every member was prayed for by someone? What would it do to our worship? What would it do to our preaching? What would it do to our ministries? What would it do to our evangelism? What would it do to our relationships? Our church wouldn’t be the same if we made sure every person was prayed for eve- ry day by someone. What if we started to pray like that? Remember that Jesus said . . . “My house shall be called a house of prayer.” Wouldn’t it be wonderful if that were true of our church? We have a good start with some of the prayer ministries that are already in place. Think of the word that would spread. “Those people really know how to pray.” Think of the love that would grow. Think of the lives that would change. Think of the miracles God would do. Think of the excitement on Sunday morning. We would get up early and come to church eagerly, waiting to see what God was going to do. We would sing with new gusto and pray with new fervency and listen with new expectation. And who knows? Think of the impact around the world as we begin to pray for God’s work in Africa, India, Cuba and other countries of the world. I think God has more for us than we have ever dreamed. What if we really started to pray? Perhaps you are already praying. Great! Now come and join us on Sunday afternoons at 4:00 PM and we will do it together. More years ago than I need to report, the President of the college where I was teaching came to my office and gave me a book. The name of the book was See You At The Top. It was written by a fellow in Texas named Zig Ziglar. President Fulford wanted me to meet with Mr. Ziglar and to secure his permission to create a class based on the book to teach in the adult school at night. I made reservations and flew to Dallas to meet Mr. Ziglar. We almost instantly became fast friends. We created a friendship that has spanned nearly 40 years.

We met for breakfast at a Holiday Inn. I was reading the local newspaper when he came in. He introduced himself and asked me the strangest question: “Mike, what are you doing?” I told him that I was reading the newspaper. “Why?” he replied. My startled response was “so that I would know what was going on.” He said, “And once you know what is going on, what are you going to do about it?”

Well, he had me on that one because the truth was I wasn’t going to do anything about it. That was a Texas newspaper and I lived in Greenville, North Carolina. He began to talk to me about how much negative information people put in their heads watching the 24 hour news stations, reading newspapers that only report the bad, and listening to people commiserate about how bad life is. His point was that as a Christian (and he is a deeply spiritual man) life isn’t bad. It is, in fact, glorious every day.

Consider what you put in your head. Zig’s point was well made and very well taken. He was at-tempting to make me understand that if I planned to motivate, train, and coach people as a ca-reer that I had to be a positive person. I could not fill my head with negatives and expect posi-tives to come out of my mouth.

No part of our spiritual walk should lend itself to negative thoughts or behaviors. Jesus was eas-ily the most positive influence of His day. He had a sense of humor that must have had the Pharisees chuckling when He talked about criticizing a speck in someone’s eye when you have a saw long in yours. They must have laughed when He explained to them that God dresses the lil-ies in the field so He could surely take care of their needs.

I recently found a little window patch that is now on the back window of my car. It says: More

Wag – Less Bark. Try that for a lifestyle adjustment. You might actually like it and it is a certain-

ty that those around you will. Seek out the positive. Look for the good in everyone and every-

thing. It takes no talent to criticize everyone and everything. However, it takes a good heart to

speak love and joy to others. Try it! You might like it!

Notes From Julia Page 5

“J.A.M. SWITCH”

J.A.M. (Jesus and Me) Session has moved

to Sunday nights!!! Because of the busy sched-

ules of our children involving sports and other ac-

tivities, we have changed J.A.M. from Wednes-

day nights to Sunday nights. We begin at 6:00

P.M. with dinner in the ODFC and then it’s on to our lesson, crafts, and games.

Moving to Sunday nights doesn’t mean we won’t have activities for the children

of PIPC on Wednesdays; it just means instead of being together just one night a

week, now it’ll be two nights. How exciting is that?? So come to the ODFC if

you’re between the ages of four years old and the sixth grade on Sunday nights

for our special time together. J.A.M. will officially end at 7:30 P.M. on Sun-

days, but I’ll stay until 8:00 P.M. for the parents that have children in Youth so

you won’t have to make two trips to the church.

FAT TUESDAY/MARDI GRAS CELEBRATION

Once again we’re going to be having a big cele-

bration on Fat Tuesday for the children. We’ll

make beignets, eat pancakes, decorate masks, do

some crafts, play some games, and learn all about

Lent and what it means to Chris-

tians. We’ll meet on Tuesday, February 21st, in

Founders Hall for a whole lot of fun! Watch your

mail for further details… This Saturday,

February 4th,

the children will be

spending Saturday

afternoon at the

movies and eating

dinner together.

Check your mail for

the specific details

and then make sure

you let me know if

your child(ren) will

be going.

CHILDREN’S COOKIE BAKE

Due to the overwhelming success of

our Christmas Cookie Bake, we’re going

to be having another one on February

25th. After we finish baking Commun-

ion bread, we’re going to be making treats

for members of our congregation. During the Christmas season

we delivered cookies to 30 church members! An extra-special

“thank you” to my drivers-Jill Fletcher, Pam Gaddy, Martha

Wahl, and Liz Williamson.

~It’s that time!!!! PIPC Children’s Choir Kick Off~

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 12th (and every week) TIME: 5:00 P.M.

WHERE: THE CHOIR ROOM, PIPC

Bring a friend to choir and to all j.A.M. activities

God’s Word, God’s music and great activities for every child

PARENTS, this is a wonderful experience for your children and an awesome opportunity to lead kids in min-

istry and to reach out to community through kids’ worship and singing.

There will be a schedule of rehearsals, PIPC Children’s Choir information and upcoming worship or music op-

portunities for your children.

If you have any questions or need information,

please email Sylvia at [email protected] or you may call the church at 843-237-4581, ext. 27.

Thank you, faithful choir members, for your hard work and the heart of wor-

ship you bring each week. As we enter the time of Lent and Easter, I want to

encourage all of the PIPC congregation to join us in rehearsal and Sunday wor-

ship. The choir of PIPC is an amazing group of people who not only work hard

to bring their gifts and talents to God in service, but an ensemble that loves

serving as a team and being in fellowship. It is a highlight for the week when

we are together and enjoying one another.

Everyone interested in singing for Palm Sunday and Easter, please plan to meet at the church in

Founders Hall on March 17th at 8:45 AM for rehearsal, beginning with coffee and doughnuts/bagels.

We will work on the music for this season until 11:00.

If you are interested in singing in a smaller choral ensemble which will sing from time to time in the

worship service, please let me know. This ensemble will rehearse at a separate time from choir and

experience an array of choral and smaller ensemble repertoire by various artists and composers. Please

let me know if you are interested, adults and youth. Youth who are involved in AM choral ensembles

at schools, this is a great opportunity to use your talents and interest in worship.

Alleluia Ringers, our PIPC Handbell Choir, has reconvened for 2012 and are preparing for several

ringing events. Our Ringers will attend the Spring Ring in Myrtle Beach on March 9th and 10

th. We are

excited to participate together in this event. Please watch the newsletter for other handbell events

through the coming months.

PIPC Kids’ Choir, don’t miss the kickoff on Sunday, February 12th, at 5:00 PM.

If you have any thoughts, ideas, talents to share, please e-mail me, Sylvia Warr,

at [email protected] or call the church office, ext. 27.

A Valentine Love Story Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers

Redeeming Love is an analogy between two Biblical characters in the Old Testament—Hosea and Gomer—and the two main char-acters in this novel—Michael Hosea and his bride, Angel. The set-

ting is during the western gold rush of the 1850’s, a time when men sold their souls for food and shelter. Angel survived her lifestyle by keeping her hatred for men alive, but this hatred left her empty and dead inside. Then Angel meets Michael who seeks his heavenly Father’s will in everything. Michael obeys God and marries Angel whom he loves unconditionally, despite her past. Angel be-gins a long slow recovery as God warms her heart and thaws emotions. How-ever, her previous lifestyle threatens her marriage and her inability to accept God’s eternal love and forgiveness. The darkness of her old ways returns and Angel runs away. Does she return to Michael? Can she accept God’s healing for her mind and body? This novel is a “must read” for those who love westerns as well as romance stories with a spiritual message. Luncheon at Olde World Restaurant in Murrells Inlet

on Tuesday, February 14th, from 11AM until 1PM.

The menu will consist of a choice of four entrees:

Chicken Parmigiana, Eggplant Parmigiana, Spaghetti and

Meatballs or Meat sauce, or Baked Ziti.

Each entree will be served with a house salad, bread, dessert (chocolate cream

puffs) and a beverage (soft drink, coffee, or tea) for $15.00 per person, plus

tax and gratuity.

If you plan to attend, you must RSVP by Friday, February 10th, to either Hazel

Winstead at 237-9205 or Anne Burgin at 237-4778 and indicate your choice of

entree.

This has been a highly successful event in years past, so get your RSVP in and

don't miss this year's event.

Veterans, would you like to help educate today’s youth about the true meaning of service and sacrifice while preserving your life experiences? HCS Early College High School is searching for vet-erans and volunteers from all US military branches who served during a time of conflict. Our students are working as historians for the US Library of Congress’ Veteran’s History Project. The mission of this project is to record interviews of veterans and vol-

unteers which will then be archived by the Library of Congress for future histo-rians. Through the interview process you will help teach our students, either in person or through the recorded interviews, about American History, service and life. For more information contact Adam Powley at 843-215-5930, [email protected], or see me after worship services on Sunday.

To help offset the cost

and continue to offer

coffee on Sunday morn-

ings we have placed a jar

for voluntary donations

on the coffee bar in the

ODFC and in the library.

It costs PIPC approxi-

mately .23 cents for each

cup of coffee served. If

everyone who enjoyed a

cup would offer just .25

cents each Sunday we

could divert approxi-

mately $800 - $1000 per

year to one of our many

ministries!

Thank you for

your support!

MORE THAN 20 YEARS AGO, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group: "Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat." Since that day, more than $81 million has been

raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transform-ing the time around Super Bowl weekend into the nation's largest celebration of giving and serving. On Sunday, February 5th, after both worship services, the Youth will be at the sanctuary doors with soup pots collecting dona-tions. Be part of this movement that is sharing God's love with those in need. Please give generously on Super Bowl Sunday.
