FRANKLY SPEAKING  We’re off to a good start! At our January retreat for the Elders, Deacons, and staff, all of us made a covenant em‐bracing Core Values and our purpose for Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church. It’s a way of le ng others know who we are, what we believe and what’s important to us. We also adopted as our theme for the year: “Like Christ.” It is based on Romans 8:29 where the Bible says, “For those God foreknew He also predes ned to be conformed to the likeness of His Son.” And so the leadership and other members of the congrega on on the Sunday following our re‐treat agreed that the way we can become more like Christ is by our Core Values and purpose as follows:

Core Values: Guided by the Gospel, true to the Reformed and Evangelical tradi ons of the Church, and commi ed to discerning and fulfilling God's purpose for us, we base our ministry on these core values: Christ Centered: We believe that Jesus Christ alone is Lord of all and the only way to salva on (John 14:6). Authority  of  Scripture: We believe that all Scripture is divinely inspired and serves as the final authority in all ma ers of belief and behavior (2 Timothy 3:16). Worship: We believe that we are created by God to worship Him and that glorifying God is the ul mate reason for our existence (John 4:23,24). Evangelism: We believe that God has called believers to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ (Ma hew 28:19,20). I will be in Charlotte at my second Doctoral Residency on Feb-ruary 2nd -15th. My first residency was two weeks in January-February 2013, and my third and final residency will be two weeks of February 2015. I can't believe my "middle" residency is here! Time has flown by. To prepare for this residency, I have completed some projects, read many, many, many books, written papers, studied scripture, and so much more. Kristin and I would greatly appreciate your prayers during these two weeks (well every day for that matter, but please take time these dates to lift us up to Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ). I

will definitely be challenged and stretched through this residency and the rest of this journey to come! This residency is called, Pastor as a Preacher, so these two weeks are about preach-ing and the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for the world. I know it will continue to be a lot of hard work, but I’m very excited!! A large part of this residency is studying the Word of God. I am thoroughly enjoying being challenged by my class to truly study the Word of God. Digging deeper and studying scripture is a joy of mine. What is your first reaction when you think about studying/actually study the Word of God? Do you study the Word of God on a regular basis? Is it a joy to you? What I mean by that is do you take time and do more than read but actually study it? Get into it, study the people, the places, the geography? Dig Deep? If not, or if so, might I suggest a book: “Rick Warren's Bible Study Methods: Twelve Ways You Can Unlock God's Word.” Rick Warren talks about 12 ways to dig into and study the Word of God. It has many practical steps to get into studying scripture. Let’s Dive Deep into the Word Of God! Carter Robinson Associate Pastor Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church [email protected]

Kristin and I are going to Israel this summer!!!!! Who is going with us? There's still space! There's still time to sign up. This will be an experience of a life-time that you don't want to miss! If you'd like to know more, talk to me. Come on...Join us!

You'll be glad you did!

L-Squared Learning and Living God’s Word Learning His Word and Applying

it in our lives daily. PIPC is excited to once again offer the L-squared Bible study program. The goal is to help us all to learn His Word and apply it to our lives daily. L-squared will consist of fellowship events, beginning with the potluck and then will focus on studies starting the end of January and the beginning of February. The studies will meet at different times throughout the week and will be facilitated by different leaders in our congregation. These studies will be short-term studies lasting only 6-12 weeks. The studies are as follows:

90 Days Through the Bible - facilitated by Becky Veselick—will be held on Sunday evenings at 6:00 PM in the parlor. The class lasts about 45 minutes and runs for 90 days (13 weeks). We recommend purchasing the 90 Day Bible for $15.00 but that is not a requirement. Other materials are available and range in price from 7 to 10 dollars. These are also not required. In this class we will read the entire Bible word for word in 90 days. This is not an in-depth Bible study. There isn't time to truly study; we are simply reading the Bible cover to cover. It requires about 45 minutes of at home reading every day for the 90 days. Several people who have taken the class said it changed their lives.

“Sons of Thunder” Young Men’s Study—How God Makes A Man—facilitated by Carter Robinson—meets every Wednesday, beginning January 29th, at noon at Dr. Eddy’s office OR every Sunday, be-ginning February 2nd, at 6:00 PM in Classroom C. This is a 10 week study. Let’s face it—men today are under severe attack. The battle line against biblical manhood is clearly drawn and fiercely contested. More than ever, men who want to follow Christ are asking: Why is it so hard to live an authentic Christian life? Who will show me how to thrive as a father, a husband, and on the job? What should I do when I’m being tested to the breaking point? Fortunately, the Bible preserves crucial details about the powerful lessons learned by men who have already faced and answered these questions. In How God Makes a Man, renowned expert on men’s issues Patrick Morley takes you into Scripture to answer these questions. Don’t settle for less. Join us on Wednesdays OR Sundays for this epic adventure of becoming God’s man.

Heart for the Community—facilitated by Merrell McIlwain— will be held on Sundays, beginning Febru-ary 9th, at 5:30 PM in Classroom B. The class will run for 8 weeks. The class will begin by surveying the purpose of mission work, and will refer to A Heart for the Community, Servolution and 7 Practices of Effective Ministry. After Dr. Fuder's visit in February, they will undertake some of the work he sug-gests to find a local ministry, and will use his newly published book (the only one people will have to purchase for the course), Neighborhood Mapping. This is a class for everyone who is interested in local mission!

Young Women’s Study—A Confident Heart by Renee Swope—facilitated by Kristin Robinson—will be held on Tuesdays, beginning January 28th, at 7:00 PM. This will be an 8 week study. Often the biggest obstacle to living out our faith is our own doubt--about our worth, our abilities, our relationship with God, and situations in our lives. A Confident Heart gives voice to the questions, doubts, struggles, and hopes so many women have. Author Renee Swope shows women how to identi-fy, overcome, and even use doubt in order to live confidently in God's power, truth, and grace. A Confi-dent Heart is an authentic, insight-filled, and encouraging message for any woman who wants to ex-change destructive thought patterns with biblical truth that will transform the way she thinks, feels, and lives.

Know Why We Believe—facilitated by Frank Holsclaw—will be held on Thursdays, at 11:00 AM, be-ginning February 6th in the parlor. Do science and Scripture conflict? Are miracles possible? Is Christian experience real? Why does God allow suffering and evil? More than a million people have found solid answers to these and other questions in Know Why You Believe, selected by Christianity Today as one of the fifty books that have shaped evangelicals the most. This clear and reasonable response to the tough challenges to Christi-anity—revised by Marie Little in consultation with experts in science and archaeology—is as current as it is classic, offering solid ground for those on an honest quest for truth.

Sign-up sheets for classes will be available in the parlor on Sunday, February 2nd,

or you can contact the church office at 237-4581.

PIPC Loves Its Graduates

We celebrate our gradua ng seniors on Saturday, February 8th, with a silent auc on, dinner and musical entertainment in our Open Door Fellowship Center in me for Valen ne's Day. Seventeen years ago, Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church de‐cided to honor, support and embolden our gradua ng high school seniors with a college scholarship. Under the leadership of mem‐ber and Elder, Walter Rice, a Scholarship Team was formed and gi s were requested from members and friends of PIPC. Each year since 1997, a Scholarship Team has met to review the appli‐ca ons of our seniors. The students' academics, church par cipa‐

on and community involvement are all factors in the monetary awards. Consistent dona ons from an annual appeal have resulted not only in grateful students and parents, but also have resulted in a con nuing connec on between the college student and his or her home church. Many mes on Scholarship Sunday, when the scho‐las c "love offerings" are presented, the students have said they felt their church family was traveling with them to campus and would be si ng on their shoulder, as accompaniment and as con‐science. They all have been aware of the genuine support, the feeling of hope for their future and the power of prayer. The checks pre‐sented are a token percentage of today's college expenses, but serve as a reminder of the sacrifices, prayers and love of the ex‐tended church family helping to raise these children of God.

Join us this Valen ne season as we celebrate the  accomplishments of these four students:

Nina Lowenbach, Brianna Lo chea, Jordan Leigh  and Parker Williams.

Our  5th  Annual  Scholarship  Dinner  is  on Saturday, February 8th,  in the Open Door Fel‐lowship  Center.  The  doors  open  at  5:15  PM for appe zers and a silent auc on of art and objects,   golf packages,  lake and beach vaca‐ons, gi  cer ficates for des na ons and res‐

taurants. A sumptuous and formal dinner be‐gins at 6:00 PM with entertainment from em‐cee Lee Brockington and "The Paul Robeson of Pawleys Island," Blake B. Graham.       Tickets  are  $25  and  are  available  from Scholarship  Team  members  or  the  church office.  Bring  your  Valen ne  to  this  special evening and celebrate  the  love  in our church family.

“And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”

We would like to invite anyone and every-one who has a heart for missions and this com-munity to a very special event! On Feb 28 and March 1, Dr. John Fuder will be here at Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church to help us design an approach that will allow us to reach our local community for Christ. We will start with a pot-luck dinner on Friday evening and an overview of what we’ll be doing. Then, on March 1 from about 9:00 - 3:30, we’ll get into the specifics and begin to develop a plan that will work for all of us.

We hope you’ll want to be part of this!

COMMITMENT TO OUR SISTER CHURCH IN CAMAJUANI, CUBA

On March 4-10th, 2014 a five member team including Char-lie Bradshaw, Virginia Bradshaw, Leigh Eddy, Liz William-son, and Carroll Armstrong will be going on a mission trip to our sister church in Camajuani, Cuba. We need your help! Our primary work there is building relationships by going into their community and sharing the “Good News” of Christ with non- believers and seekers. While we are there, we also visit the infirm and homebound as well as friends who have opened their hearts to Jesus from past trips. We host a mini VBS for the children, help serve meals to the poor and elder-ly, lead Sunday school and go into a neighboring village to share Christ with gatherings of people in house churches. In addition, we are helping the church establish a discipleship program for new believers. PIPC has helped our sister church with many other needs as well. For example, we helped pro-vide a beautiful vegetable garden on the church grounds that allows them to feed the poor in their community. It is wonder-ful to see their church grow and thrive with the loving support of our PIPC church family! Please consider helping in the following ways:

Prayer – the most important! Please pray for the team that will be going to Cuba. Pray that we will have safe travels and that God will prepare us for our visit and bless our efforts as we minister to the people of Cuba. All of us need to pray for the Cuban people, who are caught up in an embargo that has lasted for fifty years. Their futures are un-predictable and ample food, housing, and medicines are daily concerns. Pray that their spiritual and physical needs will be met and that their hearts and minds will be open to receive God’s Holy Word.

Write a letter to someone in our sister church. (Enclose a picture if possible.) We will provide you with the infor-mation as to what you should address in the letters. A letter and a picture will be sent back to you. Letters will be translated in Spanish and English.

Monetary gifts to help pay for a large amount of medicines, a blood pressure monitor, reading glasses, a year’s worth of Sunday School supplies, discipleship materials, Bibles, back packs, school supplies and memory flash drives for the students, worship supplies, and the list goes on. We will also have added airline expenses for the extra suitcases that will hold the necessary supplies. You may make your check payable to PIPC and earmark it Cuba Mission Trip Supplies.

Whether you feel led to contribute financially, write a letter, or commit to prayer (or all three), we truly appreciate your support. We are all part of the team doing God’s work in Cuba. He is truly blessing our efforts there. Thank you for your support of this special ministry.

Remember the last words Jesus spoke before going back to heaven – “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,

and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8.

“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”

John 15:13

Altar Flower Donation Opportunities Many open slots are available for sign-ups to donate altar flowers in 2014. Please consider donating altar flow-ers to the glory of God and in honor of someone, in recognition of a birthday or anniversary, in memory of some-one, or just as a loving gesture for PIPC. There is an Altar Flowers Calendar Notebook in the narthex where you can sign up. Bea Pifer will contact you regarding the details. You may request the flowers and colors of the arrangements, as well as a particular florist, if so desired. The Flower Committee does the arrangements on the 2nd Sunday of each month, indicated by a “star” in the calendar. On the following Monday the Flower Committee rearranges the flowers into smaller bouquets which are delivered by the Deacons to shut-ins or those with cares and concerns.

Please contact Bea at 237-7762 if you have any questions.

WHAT’S COOKING AT THE BREAD OF LIFE KITCHEN   As expected, the servers and cooks have been very busy at the Bread of Life Kitchen, especially the last quarter of 2013. In the month of October 731 were served, 639 in November and 526 in December, while being closed two days in December due to the holidays. So during the last three months, the Bread of Life Kitchen averaged preparing and serving approximately 77 hot nutri ous lunches each day they were open to some very hungry folks. Our numbers are constantly climbing. Since April 2013, we are now averaging 200 more meals per quarter.

This is only possible due to the loyal volunteers and outside dona ons. So a BIG THANK YOU TO ALL.

On Sunday, February 2nd, a er each worship service, the Bread of Life Kitchen Volunteers will be in the

narthex to receive the Souper Bowl of Caring Offering which benefits the

Bread of Life Kitchen.
