MASTERING a high performance vehicle over rugged, rough terrain is the reward 4 x 4 enthusiasts will get when they tackle extreme courses.

Of course any gender can enjoy challenging driving, but with June being the month to celebrate fathers, we took a closer look at an activity many East London men would want to try their hand at.

There has been a marked rise in the popularity of 4 x 4 courses nationally as buyers of these vehicles seek to test their potential outside of the urban environment. A course will teach owners of such vehicles how to drive them safely over rough terrain, and how to have better control over their vehicles.

Locally, De Kraal Outdoor Adventures - located just outside East London, off the N2 on the way to Chintsa - offers just the ticket for those seeking a 4 x 4 adventure.

“Man and machine must work together on these courses, it’s satisfying to test the limits together,” De Kraal owner Charl Wittstock said.

Wittstock said on offer at the facility were several courses, depending on what the 4 x 4 enthusiast has in mind. These range from a basic day course, to more advanced courses which are then broken into smaller courses. These include courses such as specialist sand driving or mud driving, among others.

It’s best to bring your own 4 x 4, Wittstock said, in order to learn on your own, familiar vehicle, but if you’re interested in seeing what this “sport” is all about, a vehicle can be arranged so the “gogga can bite you,” Wittstock laughed. In other words, try a 4 x 4 course and see if you’re keen to invest in your own vehicle.

Each course has several levels, going from moderately easy to extreme, where 4 x 4s must negotiate gut-wrenching obstacles or survive crazy angles.

While the 4 x 4 course may be more Dad’s cup of tea, there are other activities at De Kraal that will keep the whole family active and entertained. These include quad biking, motor biking, mountain biking and trails suitable for trail runners. It’s wholesome, it’s outdoorsy. It’s the ideal venue to celebrate fathers and men this month.

BUYING a boat is just the first step towards freedom on the water. Legally, every person who owns a boat longer than three metres and over 15 horsepower must have a valid skipper’s licence, accredited by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA).

East London skipper and SAMSA accredited trainer John Barry explained that there are several skipper licences (or “tickets”) available, depending on the requirements of the boat owner and where they would like to sail. These range from inland water skipper, to day skipper, Yachtmaster ocean and coastal skipper.

The skipper “ticket” likely suitable to most boat owners in East London, Barry said, are the inland licences – for use on dams and rivers; category e licences, for estuaries and up to a nautical mile inland; category c licence, for up to 15 nautical miles offshore (favoured by ski-boaters), and the category b licence, which allows movement up to 40 nautical miles offshore.

Anyone can become a “skipper”. The deal is you must rack up enough hours of experience (50), and then pass the course from a registered and accredited body. Water safety is not something to be taken lightly. It’s not for nothing the coast off East London and up the Wild Coast has earned a fierce reputation, so those who dare venture into the waters must do so knowing they are properly trained and equipped to take on the roughest of oceans.

Sail the Seven Seas

In East London, you can get your skippers tickets through Blue Horizon Academy, which offers courses ranging in price from R1000 to R1700. Contact John Barry on 082-938-6275 or Glenda Wakeford on 083-303-7652. The Leading Lights Academy at NSRI Station 7 also offers training, contact number 082-990-5972.
