Welcome IKNIn 2010, Kirknewton residents were asked what would improve the life of those who live and work here. Three of the things were more facilities in the centre of the village, a daytime social space and more activities for young people.

Thanks to Leader funding Kirknewton Community Development Trust built the Green Room, a zero energy development, which opened in February. Thanks to Big Lottery Scotland we are able to fund twonew staff posts for three years – a Youth and Volunteer Co-ordinator and an Admin and Finance Officer. These two roles, along with your help, will develop and support groups to make things identified in the public consultation happen.

The brochure you hold in your hands will hopefully guide you on what is available now across four venues – the Green Room, the Village Hall, Potter Around and the Church Hall. There are also previews of upcoming events outside these venues too!

We hope the brochure will also inspire you. Many of the clubs, events, activities or skills workshops are runby Kirknewton residents. Many more are working voluntarily behind the scenes trying to find solutions andfunding to make your ideas a reality. Thanks to every one of them.

Tony Foster, CEO KCDT.

Why is the GreenRoom so warm and cosy?

For more information 01506 883 988 | [email protected]

The Green Room has been built with astrong focus on very high levels of insulation and air-tightness in an attempt to reduce the running cost andour reliance on fossil fuels to an absolute minimum

The building utilises Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS) as the mainstructural elements for walls and roof.

What are SIPSA SIP panel comprises PolyurethaneFoam Insulation sandwiched betweentwo layers of Orientated Strand Board(OSB). The resultant material is bothvery rigid and highly insulating. It is adevelopment of an idea originally proposed by the famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. To supplement the already high insulation values of this material wehave added a further 50mm of urethane foam insulation inside thebuilding to make it really cosy.

The floor is also highly insulated withurethane materials and is finished with

a self-levelling screed that containshot-water pipes forming a large heat-store and radiator combined. Heat energy is supplied by storingwater heated overnight by off-peakelectricity, in a 300 litre insulated tankwith an ordinary programmer that callsfor heat and a thermostat that regulates the room temperature. Thewindows are low u value and the bestwe could afford.

The Ventilation SystemBecause we have made the structureair-tight to a very high level we havefitted a ventilation system that introduces fresh air from outside tomake the room comfortable. This system captures heat energy fromthe outgoing stale air to pre-heat theincoming fresh air at an efficiency ofover 90% and in summer it allows coolair to enter without any pre-heating tomaintain maximum comfort levels andavoid over-heating.

Solar Photovoltaic PanelsThere is a 4.0 kW Solar Photovoltaicsystem on the south facing roof thatwe hope will generate enough electricity to make the building self-sufficient in energy for both heating and lighting over the yearlycycle. Electricity from our panels is sold to the grid, but only after we havesatisfied our needs in running thebuilding. We will measure this energyuse and report on the balance achievedbetween use and production at the endof the first year.

Natural Larch PlanksThe outside of the building is clad innatural Larch planks that have beenpurposely left “as-sawn” so that theyhold a very high coat weight of paintfor maximum long-term durability. Theroof is made of stainless-steel that is“roll-bonded” with a zinc surface thatprevents it from being too shiny on asunny day and allows the material tobe solder-joined when necessary.

Throughout the design of this buildingwe have attempted to use sustainablemethods of construction that minimisethe embodied energy in the materialsand, at the same time, deliver a building with low maintenance costsand a minimal carbon footprint..

We have tried to incorporate as manygood ideas as we could, but there is always room for improvement. Pleasefeel free to let us have you suggestionsand ideas for the next one as well asimprovements we may incorporate torefine this one. Stewart McKenna Jan 2014.

MinisterOpenstheGreenRoomThe Minister for Environment and Climate Change Paul Wheelhouse MSPhas officially opened the KirknewtonGreen Room, a zero energy development built by Kirknewton Community Development Trust (KCDT).The Green Room was part financed bythe Scottish Government and the European Community West LothianLeader 2008 – 2013 programme whocontributed £120,000 to the project.

The project is a key part of theKirknewton Community DevelopmentPlan 2012-2104, which was based on a

community consultation in 2011. Over500 people, 25% of the community, participated in the consultation.

Kirknewton Community DevelopmentTrust invested £30,000 in the projectand over £10,000 worth of volunteerhours. The running of the Green Roomand the work of the Development Trusthas been supported by a Big LotteryScotland grant of £266,000 for thenext three years. This includes the employment of a new Youth and Volunteer Co-ordinator and Financeand Administration Officer, both ofwho support local groups and projects.

The future sustainability for the building and the project will come froma ground breaking community benefitand investment opportunity KCDThave negotiated with wind farm developer EFRG Fauch Hill. The community, who backed the development by 65% in an independent survey, are expecting the announcement of the public enquiry shortly.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Paul Wheelhouse said,

“Climate Change is possibly the biggestthreat we face as a global community

and Scotland has shown internationalleadership on this issue with the world’smost challenging legislation and statutory annual targets. Global actionis important, but so is local initiative –and community projects like theKirknewton Green Room typify the innovation we are increasingly seeingacross Scotland. The Green Room notonly creates a space for individual andsocial development and empowermentbut also raises the bar with regard toenergy demand reduction and energyefficiency. The people of Kirknewtoncan feel justifiably proud of the GreenRoom and I hope other communitiescan take inspiration fromwhat they’ve achieved.”

Chair of the Trust Stewart McKenna said,

“If we are to deliver a genuinely sustainable community then we have the capital resource of people but lack the other resource which is long-termreliable funding” With the funding that has beenagreed from a local wind-energy proposal we will ownassets and have 25 years of

quality funding Scotland’s people andits renewable resources are two of ourgreatest assets. In combination theyform a powerful, positive force and willhelp us to deliver a more resilient local democracy, better able to make decisions for itself.

Stewart McKenna, who chairs KCDT,predicted that the social and environmental benefits to local peoplefrom Fauch Hill would be “enormous”.It was a hard-won victory that otherscould learn from.
