    editors note

June this year denotes not only winter, but the kick off to the Victorian School Holidays and the start of another month of great things to discover in our region.

Narana stands proudly at the gate to the Surf Coast offering an impressive educational and tourism experience. 3 - 10 July celebrates the history, tradition and achievements of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. So come along to Narana and be intrigued by the stories, arts, crafts and music and all on offer that makes Narana a must do experience for the whole family.

The annual National Celtic Festival will be culturally enriching and enlivening the coastal town of Portarlington over the Queens Birthday weekend. As always it is an overabundance of music, song, theatre, dance, literature and comedy which promises optimum entertainment over three days. Dont miss Australias largest Celtic event.

GSODA Junior Players will be entertaining young audiences with another much loved production that promises much fun and many tapping toes! High School Musical will run for one week only at GPAC between 18 - 25 June. Grab the kids and grab your tickets for a musical spectacular.

Bellarine Kids Family Fun and Market is as the event title indicates, a day dedicated to all things kids. There will be a huge array of kids activities, demonstrations, stalls, roaming performers, interactive sessions and so much more. Its a day for the kids and a day for parents to learn about the very best of services and offerings for children available within the region.

The Gordon is taking applications mid-year for some interesting and diverse short courses, so whether it is simply a desire to learn something new or perhaps re-train for a change of career, then The Gordon can certainly assist and set a

    new track for learning.Visit thegordon.edu.au/shortcourses

School holidays beckon with a huge range of great activities to entertain kids of all ages. Head to Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre for roller skating mania and loads of activities on offer. Market Square also promises a theme high on family fun and dedicated to the international fl avors of food. Plus checkout our Out & About and Kids On the go sections and you will have a hard time deciding where to fi rst.

    Have a great month.

    Torquay Diva The Gordon

Start your studies mid year at The Gordon

The Gordon is taking applications for mid year (July), so if you are looking to start a short course or kick start a new career, jump online today.

Lots of programs run information sessions, so check the web for dates and times, as they are a great source of information and can assist in the application process. If you cant make it, their customer service team are always ready to speak with you, so feel free to give them a call. With great industry trained teachers, hands-on learning, small class sizes and access to great facilities and support services, The Gordon is a great place to study.

2016 is also a great time to study at The Gordon TAFE, as they are able to provide exemptions for prospective students to the existing Victorian Training Guarantee upskilling requirement. This means if you already have a qualification and you have previously received Government funded training, you may still be eligible for funded training in 2016, making your studies more affordable. So maybe its a great time to commence a pre apprenticeship, become a hairdresser or a chef or possibly start an administrative course to build your computer skills and confidence? Perhaps a six month course in floristry or animal studies would suit? There are mid year intakes into community services, early childhood, aged care, interior design, specialist makeup or tourism. For those needing on-the-job training such as first aid, forklift operation or high risk licences there are many courses that run regularly. In addition there are also short courses that run regularly throughout the year.

The Gordon second semester offerings have just been published, and are available at either: thegordon.edu.au/shortcourses, at local newsagents, or come along and enquire at Westfield.

Surfcoast local Kerry Stotten has owned and operated the successful Lorne Diva and Pakington Diva shops for the past six years.

Kerry wanted to open on the coast and has consolidated both businesses into your one stop shop for women in the heart of Torquay. Kerry chose Torquay due to its growing population and proximity to Geelong and the response so far by both the locals and visitors to the area has been fantastic.

Torquay Diva will be offering huge savings during June on their extensive range of After 5 and Special Occasion dresses, separates, accessories plus fashion clothing, swimwear and homewares. Catering for sizes 10 to 24 and open seven days a week.

In addition there are also short courses that run regularly throughout the year.

Wildlife of Gondwana: Beasts of the Great Southern Supercontinent Until 23 July 2017

The National Wool Museum welcomes some of the most unusual dinosaurs to have ever roamed the planet and they are all from our own backyard. Wildlife of Gondwana is an exhibition where skeletons and fossils meet scientists and artists. Where vivid illustrations by Peter Trusler put muscle and skin on bone to give us a glimpse of how some of the most unusual dinosaurs to have ever roamed the planet lived. Flu season and staying well

The annual influenza vaccine is highly recommended for those over 65 years of age and at higher risk for complications from flu. A flu vaccine protects against flu viruses that research indicates will be most common in the upcoming season. Flu vaccines are often updated to keep up with changing viruses. The bodies immunity can wane over a year, so annual vaccination is needed to ensure the best possible protection against influenza. The vaccination is an important preventative measure but not the only one.

In addition to vaccination, people should practice; Washing their hands regularly especially after coughing or sneezing, which is one of the best ways to avoid the spread of flu and other infectious illness. Alcohol based hand sanitizer is also effective. Cover the coughs or sneezes by using a tissue or handkerchief to cover the mouth and the nose. Alternatively, sneeze into your elbow to prevent the spread of airborne germs. Stay at home if you feeling unwell. If you catch a cold or flu avoid spreading it to other people. Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may also have vomiting and diarrhea. People infected with the flu may have respiratory symptoms without a fever.

The flu vaccination is free for those aged over 65 years and available from GPs and other health care providers. It is important to keep an eye on elderly friends and relatives. Know who to call and if feeling unwell, contact your doctor or go to the nearest emergency department. If symptoms are serious, call for an ambulance immediately on triple zero (000).

    Cape Otway Lightstation

This iconic Cape Otway lighthouse stands 90 meters tall and has been the Beacon of Hope for ships since 1848. Hundreds of lives were lost in shipwrecks off Cape Otway - a sad but fascinating history which led to the building of the Lightstation in the foothills of the impenetrable forests of the Otways. Cape Otway Lighthouse is the highlight of the Great Ocean Road where with a short detour through magnificent forests, much koala life can be seen. The Kidzone activity program is fun and exciting for all primary school aged children. The gourmet caf features an historic photo gallery and video room. Australias first submarine cable link was laid between Cape Otway and Launceston in 1859. The Telegraph Station has been meticulously restored and a radar bunker, built in 1942 after a United States ship was sunk by a German mine off Cape Otway, has been newly renovated. The Lightstation precinct is the traditional home of the Gadabanud people. Discover more about this isolated but resourceful Aboriginal clan.

Each of the large scale works were painted by the late Jack L Koskie and capture the high drama of early shipping in Australia including the Loch Ard which was wrecked in 1878 trying to sight the Cape Otway light, the HMS Investigator which surveyed Australian waters under the command of Matthew Flinders, SS Casino which was wrecked at Apollo Bay in 1932, and HMAS Sydney, famous for her battle with the German vessel Emden in 1914, just to name a few.

Lightstation manager Trish Goodlet said Cape Otway had real links with some of the vessels portrayed and this exhibition which gives locals and tourists further insight into our amazing maritime history, which the Lightstation is very keen to promote and preserve.
