A Northeast Montana Wall of Honor Northeast Montana Veterans Memorial remembrance
tiles are adding up. Over 1,100 tiles are installed on
six walls with more tile orders coming daily. These tiles
only represent about one third of the walls’ capacity.
Tile applications forms can be found at the VFW or
at the website, www.veteransMT.org. Additional
tiles will be installed as they are delivered. Dave
Biggar, Curt Clampitt and Ron Kulczyk have been
busy — weather permitting — installing and grouting
the tiles into a beautiful mosaic of names. Please
do not question the workers as they are just placing
the tiles as they are set up.
Items left at the Memorial
will be removed after two
days and disposed
of. For questions
regarding tiles, please
contact Art Widhalm,
Board Chairman, at 524-
3761 or 942-0668 or Mike Hughes,

Once all villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer all the people gathered,
but only one boy came with an umbrella. That’s FAITH.
{2}When you throw babies in the air,
they laugh because they know you will catchthem.
That’s TRUST.
{3}Every night we go to bed
without any assurance of being alive the nextmorning,
but still we set the alarms to wake up.
That’s HOPE. {4}
We plan big things for tomorrowin spite of zero knowledge of the future.
That’s CONFIDENCE. {5}
We see the world suffering, but still we get married and have children.
That’s LOVE.
{6}On an old man’s shirt was written a sentence
‘I am not 80 years oldI am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience.’
That’s ATTITUDE.

The Disconnect Between
Science And Reality
Letter to the Buzz
I recently had the privilege o visiting with a coupleo ranchers rom near the Grasslands National Park (NP)
in Saskatchewan, Canada. I heard the amazing story thatwhen cattle were removed rom the park, the residentwildlie also lef. Te decline in grassland dependent birdswas very noticeable. In particular, one rancher observedthe sage grouse lef when the cattle were removed. Tisrancher was subsequently contracted by the park toreintroduce his cattle to these over rested pasturesAmazingly, the sage grouse returned to the area grazed bythe cattle! Te rancher noted the males reestablished a lekbut in a different location. o most o us this is a ascinatingexperiment demonstrating that grazing is essential on the
Northern Great Plains to maintain the native grasslandbiodiversity. You would think the scientists and bureaucratswould have jumped on this. Wrong! I obtained a copy o the Grasslands National Parko Canada 2010 Management Plan. Te plan stated, “[]rom 1984 to 2002, domestic grazing was terminated onrangelands that were acquired by Parks Canada.” Te 2002management plan outlined a role or grazing in the parkWhile bison was the preerred species, domestic livestockwere to be used where practicable. What justification do
you think they used to return livestock grazing? WrongTey proposed grazing, “as a way to control invasive plantspecies” and “its possible use in the control o plant speciesthat are not native to the park.” Te closest they cameto addressing the issue o grassland birds was when theymentioned the Superintendent now had the authority, “toissue grazing permits or domestic animals or the purposeo achieving ecological integrity goals or the park.” Forsome reason the park bureaucrats were unable to admitthat grazing was beneficial to grassland birds. So how didthe scientists do?
In 2009, a study o sage grouse by a University oMontana masters student was completed. One chaptero his study addressed the sage grouse in the Milk RiverBasin (MRB) o northeast Montana and south-centraSaskatchewan. His research area included the east blocko the Grassland NP where the rancher had observed thesage grouse response to cattle grazing. Te researcherincluded a graph showing a 60 percent decline in theSaskatchewan sage grouse population rom 2000 to 2004A ten percent increase was noted in 2005. Tis population

dynamic roughly coincided with the removal andsubsequent reintroduction o cattle. However, this aspectwas not mentioned in the thesis. Te study was designedto determine i vital rates such as nest, chick, and adultsurvival were responsible or the population decline. He
ound, “[v]egetative eatures and individual demographic vital rates do not appear to be limiting population growtho sage-grouse in the MRB”. A west nile virus outbreak in2007 did result in considerable mortality. It is unortunatehe did not address the influence o grazing on the sagegrouse population. Te author o a study o grassland birds in northernPhillips and Valley counties (just south o the CanadianGrasslands NP) was quoted in an article in the March-April 2016 issue o the Montana Outdoors magazine. Herconclusion was that soil type and precipitation had more
impact on grassland birds than grazing. While both herand the BLM wildlie biologist quoted in the article stressedmanaged grazing was preerred, neither mentioned theimpact the lack o grazing in the Grasslands NP had on thegrassland birds. Focusing on one (or a ew) species over a couple oyears o intensive study using the new high tech instrumentscan lead to amazing results. However, the people that liveyear afer year in these environments also have valuableinormation and insights to offer. It is unortunate thebureaucrats and scientist do not take advantage o thiswealth o inormation. Note: I do not subscribe to the current practice oputting a hyphen between sage and grouse. Apparently, some egghead in the late 1990’s decided this made it lookmore sophisticated and everyone ollowed suit. Doesthis mean we will have to hyphenate other animal namessuch as; blue grouse, ruffed grouse, mule deer, pronghornantelope, monarch butterfly, etc. etc.?
