Open House & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony On May 1st, we had our office Ribbon Cutting Ceremony put on for us by the Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber! We would like to thank Mark Kholos for hosting the event along with WKBN, WFMJ, and the Vindicator for attending and bringing light to our organization! We have been able to accomplish so much more over the course of the last few months having all of our program’s needs in one building instead of having them spread out between all of our homes! After the Ribbon Cutting we hosted our office Open House where family, friends, and volunteers attended to see our new space! June is an exciting month for Making Kids Count as we are going to be launching a couple new programs that you can read about below. Beatitude House EventsAlong with our monthly birthday parties and newborn basket program, we decided we wanted to assist the Beatitude House further over the course of the next few months. In the beginning of this month, we planted a garden for the mothers at the Warren Beatitude House location which included several pepper plants, tomato plants, rosemary, oregano, and basil! We hope having these items fresh on hand will help the mothers in their kitchens and help the children learn about proper nutrition! Along with the garden, we will also be renovating the Community Rooms at both the Youngstown and Warren locations. We will need several different types of volunteers for this project to help with a variety of tasks such as cleaning, painting, decorating, installations, etc. so please let us know if you are interested in joining us so we can get you assigned to one of our teams!

Youngstown Parrot Head Club

The Youngstown Parrot Head Club is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to assist in community and environmental concerns and to provide a variety of social activities for people who are interested in the music of Jimmy Buffett and the tropical lifestyle he personifies. At the 3rd Annual Big Tap In Real Craft Beer Festival, the Parrot Head Club sold pretzel necklaces that they spent a combined 146 hours making and donated the $800 proceeds they made from their sales to our organization! We can’t thank Peggy & Mike Humes along with their whole club enough for their generosity!

Poland Women’s Club

At the end of May, Making Kids Count received a $500 donation from the Poland Women’s Club for us to use towards our programs beginning this summer! We are just overwhelmed with how giving groups in the community have been and we thank everyone who has donated to us or volunteered for us from the bottom of our hearts!

Buffalo Wild Wings

Buffalo Wild Wings in Boardman was the food sponsor for our Beatitude House birthday party this past month! They donated 150 boneless wings and a tray of potato wedges for the children and their

mothers to enjoy at the party! We also had ice water and a fruit platter for the families along with cake and cookies for the birthday children and the guests at the party! If YOU are interested in becoming a food or dessert sponsor for one of our Beatitude House monthly birthday parties or our quarterly Akron Children’ Hospital of the Mahoning Valley parties, please contact us via e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at (330)501-9865! Thank you again to Nikki Lewis and the rest of the team at BWW in Boardman for their donation!

Thank YOU!

Tutoring ProgramWe are excited to announce our next endeavor will be a tutoring program for children who need extra help in school but do not have the financial means to pay for a tutor. We plan to begin this program in the summer of 2012. We will offer tutoring services to elementary students two days a week in the summer as well as two days a week during the school year in an after school program. We are in the process of adopting elementary schools to partner with this summer and into next school year. Students will be chosen based on recommendation and need.

Golf Outing InformationWe are preparing for our 2nd Annual Golf Outing which will be held on Saturday July 21st at the Mill Creek Golf Course in Boardman! Golfers must be registered by Friday July 6th so we can properly plan for the event. Please see the attached form with the golf outing information if you are interested in participating! We are also seeking out businesses who are interested in either sponsoring a hole or donating a chance auction basket. If you are interested in helping out with either, please contact Shelly at (330)501-9865.

The Big Tap In 2012On April 21st, the 3rd Annual Real Craft Beer Festival was held at the Covelli Centre in downtown Youngstown! Our non-profit organization was the beneficiary of the event proceeds and we would like to thank Sandy and Phill Reda for choosing us as this year’s non-profit organization! Sandy Reda is the event coordinator of The Big Tap In and from October of 2011 until April 21st, 2012 we worked hand in hand to make the event as successful as possible! We can’t thank the two of them enough for their hard work and for helping Making Kids Count raise almost $17,000 for our organization! We would also like to thank all of the volunteers at the event along with all of the attendees for making this event a possibility!

Williamson School Wrap-UpWith the money from Donnell Ford, the Williamson School was able to provide for the students the following things/events: Bounce-A-Round Rental, Juice Box and Chips for Fall Fest, a Thanksgiving Dinner for all Students and their Families, T-Shirts for the School Choir to Sing at the Mall, Christmas Treats for each Student, the State Motto was Painted in the Gym, Sent 4th Grade Students to Washington D.C. for the Day, Sent 1st Grade Students to Performance of Schoolhouse Rock, Provided Water, Gum, and Mints for Students taking the OAA Tests, Provided Breakfasts for Test Prep Days, T-Shirts for Students taking OAA Tests, Harambee Dancers Performance at the School, and Sent 3rd Grade Students to Field Trip at Mill Creek Park.
