PARISH NEWS Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time—June 14, 2015

For almost 50 years, the Diocese of Camden has committed itself to the support of

Catholic missions in Brazil, South America. While Brazil has long been the world’s

largest Catholic nation, the percentage of Catholic population there by some estimates

has fallen from 89 percent to 64 percent, as evangelical Pentecostalism has made

inroads over the last three decades. The Brazilian Missions Collection will be taken up in our

parish this weekend, June 13-14, and will help sustain this important mission work in South America. We

thank you for your past generosity and ask that you do what you can to support this year’s collection.

Bill Hansen has been an active member of Christ the King Parish since 1954. “Active” is

the key word, as Bill has always been totally involved in his parish and community over the

course of his 98 years. Bill grew up in Jersey City where he attended Dickinson High

School, but eventually settled in South Jersey. For many years he was a regional oil heat

manager in the Delaware Valley for Exxon, having worked his way up from a “plant man” to

a manager.

Although he retired from Exxon after 32 years, he never really stopped working until last

year, as he enjoyed a second career spanning three and a half decades at Hutchinson

Plumbing as an administrative assistant. In that position, Bill got to know all the clerks,

secretaries and administrators who handled work permits in every town hall in South

Jersey.

While Bill worked hard to succeed in his career, his top goal in life always was to be a loving husband and father, and in that

regard he excelled. He was married to his beloved Dot for 64 years and was always happiest spending time with his wife

and their two children, Gail (Burns) and Bill, Jr. His marriage to Dot changed his life in many ways, not the least of which

was his conversion to Catholicism so he could marry her in the Church and raise their children in the Catholic faith.

Seventy-four years later, Bill is still an active member of the Christ the King community. Today, Bill enjoys serving at daily

mass, while in the past he served Christ the King as a trustee and the head of ushers. He also contributed his time and

talent to Christ the King School when his children were students there. Among his accomplishments, he founded and ran

for many years the school’s popular All Girl Drum & Bugle Corps called “The Royaleers”.

His life of service has not been confined to his parish, as he served on the Board of the Delaware Valley Eye Bank, has been

a Site Chair for the Lion’s Basketball Tournament for more than a dozen years, and organized a Lion’s Club effort to raise

funds for protective vests for the Haddonfield Police and to provide their patrol cars with defibrillators. He was also honored

by the Borough of Haddonfield as Citizen of the Year in 1987 for his many contributions to his community.

Bill’s deepest hope for our parish is to find a way to reach all our young people. In the way he has lived his long and fruitful

life, kept faith with God, been devoted to his family, and served others, Bill has been, and continues to be, an inspiration to

everyone in the parish no matter their age.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time—June 14, 2015

REGISTRATION for Religious Education classes 2015-2016. Visit the parish website under the

religious ed tab to download registration forms, then submit to the office after completing.

RECRUITING for next year – Won’t you pause for a moment and reflect on whether the Lord is calling

you to become active in the catechetical ministry of our young members. Maybe you’ve felt the stirrings

to share the faith through formal teaching or prefer to assist in other areas, like tutoring, weekly hall

monitor, guest speaker, crossing guard, or assist with special events and liturgies. The Good Lord has

blessed this parish with many young children to teach them about Him, and a program of this greatness

requires many good-hearted people, high school teen and adult, male and female, to say yes. We pray

that the Holy Spirit will prompt you to take the next step and contact us. 856-429-1600.

I love working in my garden. I enjoy seeing lovely flowers and fresh vegetables grow from the

seeds I have planted. It amazes me that a tiny seed will produce a big plant without much help from

me. All I have to do is put the seed in the ground and water it and let God’s sunshine warm it.

Then it will grow into a big plant. I plant the seed, but I don’t pull the stem to make the plant grow

or paste the flowers on or stuff seeds into the fruit. God has that part worked out so that the plant

does it all on its own. Inside each tiny seed there is everything it needs to grow and blossom and

produce more seeds. Incredible! In the Gospel, Jesus speaks about seeds that sprout, grow mysteri-

ously, and are harvested. He compares this process to the Kingdom of God that is both present at that moment in his person

and also yet-to-come in its fullness. Like the seed, the Kingdom isn’t fully evident, but is growing and maturing. We are

challenged to recognize and incorporate this mysterious movement into our lives. When we do something good, our little act of

kindness may seem to be as tiny as a seed. Somehow, though, God can take our small deed or gift and make it grow and

blossom and bear fruit for his kingdom. I don’t know how God makes good deeds grow any more than I can explain how a

tomato seed is able to produce other tomatoes. Maybe it’s because, even though we and our actions seem small, God, who

made us, is powerful and wise and can do marvelous things!

Children’s Liturgy of the Word continues to June 21st during the 9:00 AM & 11:00 AM Masses.
