Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading:

2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16 Elisha, who lived about 800 years before Christ, succeeded the great prophet Elijah, and was noted for his miraculous deeds. Today we hear of one such deed performed in gratitude for the hospitality given to him and his servant Gehazi.

Second Reading: Romans 6:3-4, 8-11

In a previous section of his letter to the Romans, Paul taught that we sinners are reconciled to God through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Now Paul notes that we experience this reconciliation when in the traditional form of baptism, we are symbolically “buried” in the water and emerge to new life.

Dear Friends, During the weekend of July 22-23, we will be blessed with the presence of Fr. John Prochaska, a priest of the diocese of Oakland who received First Communion, was confirmed and schooled at Christ the King Church and School. He left Oakland to serve in the mountainous diocese of Sicuani, with about quarter-million Catholics. He has a parish spread across the hills and valleys in the Andes Mountains, probably larger than the size of the diocese of Oakland at an elevation of 13000 feet and higher. I spent a month last year in Peru, where John introduced me to the many villages and people who form his parish. We celebrated masses, took part in fiestas and hiked up many hills. The highlight of our hiking trip was Machu Picchu and the Rainbow Mountain (17,000 ft) In an article that John authored in the Catholic Voice last year, he wrote:

After having lived all of my life in the suburbs of California, I now find myself in the middle of ranch land where people raise their alpacas, sheep, cattle and a few llamas, and they also grow potatoes, quinoa and oats. I am living in Tocroyo, better known as Pallpata, and on Google Maps it is Hector Tejada. I have been given responsibility for four parishes in the Prelature of Sicuani, and 15 other communities that may or may not have chapels. From one end to the other, the territory is about 70 miles long and about 15 miles wide. My furthest parish takes about two hours to get to depending on the road work — and that is with a 4-wheel-drive truck, not a llama. One of my parishes is at 16,000 feet. Most who remain Catholic, have learned to celebrate their faith com-munally only on the popular feast days and celebrations like weddings. You can't really blame them, because that is the only time a priest would be present. So there is much work to be done, especially to those who are no longer active in a relationship with Christ or who have never been introduced to him, especially the youth…I believe Pope Francis once said that the pastors of the church need to smell the sheep. Well, I am smelling the sheep, alpaca and cows — and the peo-ple who work hard in raising them.

I have personally invited Fr. John to come to CTK on July 22/23 and share with his fellow parishioners of Christ the King his experiences of being a mis-sionary. He will be preaching at all the masses, and we will be taking a se-cond collection that will go directly to fund his mission work. I was so im-pressed and inspired by John‟s simple life-style and generosity of heart. He has a predilection for the poor and the elderly. Envelopes will be provided to you in the Church vestibule a week before his arrival. You can turn in dona-tions all through July, with checks payable to Christ the King, with the memo „Missions of Peru.‟ Thank you for your generosity. I am spending these days in silence and prayer. Know that you are all in my prayers. I ask you humbly for your prayers as well. Paulson

Pray for Our Sick

Dear God, we place our worries in your

hands. We place our sick under your care

and humbly ask that you restore your servants to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge your will and know that whatever you do, you do for the love of us.

Amen. Shawn Roy Schiller

Visitors Needed for the Elderly - The Convalescent Home Ministry is a wonderful outreach to those who are unable to get out or come to church. Would you be willing to join us as a volunteer? There are four teams and each team visits once a month: Satur-day morning, 10 am -11 am at the Carlton at Poets Corner. Please con-tact Mary at 925-689-6563 or [email protected].

Listening Devices - Some people who have difficulty hearing have found that sitting in the Children‟s Room is helpful because they can sit directly under the speakers. Howev-er, it is appreciated if we can leave the Children‟s Room for families with children. People with impaired hearing have said that our new lis-tening devices work well and they can hear much better. Please ask Sr. Dominic or one of the sacristans if you would like to try them.
