Program Overview

The middle school’s Spanish program is designed to foster students’ ability to use and produce Spanish. The program explores the language through thematic chapters that combine vocabulary, grammar, and cultural elements. Students practice the grammatical construct of the language through writing activities that require knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar learned. The use of Spanish increases as the students move from one grade to the next, culminating in a year focused mostly on oral communication alone in 8th grade. Spiral learning and repetition are important elements when learning a language. Because of this, the program recycles and introduces new and old material at the same time.

It is our goal that graduates of Christ the King Catholic School will test out of Spanish 1 when they get to high school.

Goals and Objectives

• Increase and refine their ability to communicate in Spanish. • Complete authentic tasks and projects while communicating entirely in Spanish. • Increase and enhance their knowledge of grammar in order to promote correct communication

strategies and patterns. • Gain insights into English and Spanish cultural and linguistic similarities and differences as

reflected in the languages. • Handle successfully most basic and communicative tasks and social situations. • Be able to write simple letters, brief synopses, paraphrases, and summaries of biographical data. • To express time, tense, or aspect with some precision. • Be able to read with full understanding simple connected texts. • Be able to use Spanish as a stepping-stone to understand other cultures.

6th Grade

Lesson plans for Spanish Classes 6th Grade - 2017-2018

Note: According to the grade level the Lesson Plan is based on every Spanish class that is scheduled for

the class. However, depending on days off, holidays, vacation breaks, field trips, snow days, school

events, and an overall understanding and knowledge from the lessons, the Spanish Program may

be modified or some lesson plans will not be taught or completed.

Homework: Homework will be given to the students once a week. It will be given the first Spanish class

of the week and it will need to be turn in on the last Spanish class of the week.

Class work, participation, homework, and Quizzes will be graded through the school year.

New this year!

Middle School will have new Spanish workbooks “Exprésate” Level 1.

We will be working along the school year, combining the monthly lessons as well.

If the students don´t finish the workbook for this school year, they will continue working on

them the following school term.

October – Questions and answers in Spanish. Preguntas y respuestas en Español.

¿Cómo?, ¿Cuándo?, ¿Dónde?, ¿Cuál?, ¿Cuántos?, etc.

Students will practice and write down questions and answers in Spanish. They will also be

practicing on worksheets.

The students will interview 8th and 7th graders making questions in Spanish.

The students will be graded from the interview.

Day of the Dead Project (2nd week of October) - diademuertosenseattle.org

The students will create their own material for the display and the information about the

meaning of each symbol in Spanish with translation into English.

November – Display of the “Day of the Dead¨ altar November 1st

The “Day of the Dead” display will count 80% for November’s grade. They display

along with the information written in Spanish with translation into English.

The 20% will be graded on class work and participation.

Vocabulary Quiz.

Review of Present Tense Verbs and Adjectives (Verbo ser, estar, hacer, tener, ir, comer,

caminar, leer, jugar, etc).

The students will work on worksheets to practice the conjugation of the verbs.

Rehearsal for Our “Lady of Guadalupe” Poem for December 12th

Reading comprehension.

Learn 10 vocabulary words in Spanish every week.

December – Christmas in South America countries – La Navidad en Latinoamérica.

Students will search how do they celebrate Christmas? What special food do they prepare?

What traditions do they have? etc. They will type all the information in Spanish.

This project will be graded as well as class work and participation.

January - Present Progressive – Presente Progresivo

The students will create their own Power Point Presentation to reinforce the “Present

Progressive”.

100% of this presentation will be graded for the month of January as well as class work.

Reading comprehension. - Learn 10 vocabulary words in Spanish every week.

February - Affirmative Commands using verbs (game: Simon says “jump two times”, “read the book”,

etc.) – Modo imperativo (juego: Simón dice: lava los platos, brinca 2 veces, lee el libro, limpia

la mesa, etc.)

March-April – Capitals, culture, agriculture, industry in South America countries. What is the main way of

living? What are their representative dances, music, traditional clothing and folklore?

Students will work on a Power Point presentation for the class. – Capitales, cultura,

agricultura, industria de los países Sudamericanos. ¿Cómo viven?, ¿Cuáles son sus bailes

representativos?, música y folklor.

Show a video from Mexico to the class as an example.

The Presentation to the class will be graded as well as class work 100%

May – Cooking class: How to prepare Mexican Tostadas – Clase de cocina – Tostadas.

End of the Year Project: “10 Interesting Facts about something in Spanish”. - Diez datos

interesantes acerca de un tema.

Students will choose a topic and work on Power Point for their end of the school year project.


June – End of the Year Project Presentation: “10 Interesting Facts about something”

Final grade for the month of June.

Students will make 15 questions in Spanish and interview a Spanish native speaker in Spanish.

They will write down the answers in Spanish as well.


June – End of the Year Project Presentation: “Interview” presented in a professional form. It will need to

be typed with all the questions and answers in Spanish and a written paragraph in Spanish

describing the person from the answers obtained.

Christmas in Latin America – La Navidad en Latinoamérica.

Students will research how do they celebrate Christmas? What special food do they

prepare? What traditions do they have? etc. They will type all the information in Spanish



• In January and February, the students will have 3 topics from which they may choose and work on

one of them.

January - 1. Capitals, culture, agriculture, industry of South America countries. What is the main February

way of living? What are their representative dances, music, traditional clothing and

folklore?

Students will make a stand to exhibit the information, pictures, folk art, etc. in the Fitzgerald

Room. - Capitales, cultura, agricultura, industria de los países Sudamericanos. ¿Cómo viven?,

¿cuáles son sus bailes tradicionales?, música y folklor.


2. Famous painters from the 20th century: biography, work, style, most famous paintings and

a brief description of why the student choose that painter. Students are required to do a

Power Point presentation for the class in Spanish. – Pintores famosos del siglo XX: biografía,

trabajo, estilo, pinturas más famosas y una descripción de por qué escogió ese pintor.

3. Ancient cultures:

• The Egyptian Civilization

• The Aztecs Civilization

• The Roman Civilization

• The Persian civilization

Students will display their information in a 3 folded poster to exhibit in the Fitzgerald

room.

This project will be graded for the months of January & February. I will consider

research, class work, pictures, clear information, and display.

March-April – Survey to the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. - Encuesta a los alumnos de Primaria en Español.

Students will do the Survey and present a chart with the results and percentages. They

will get the survey with questions ready from the teacher.

70% of this survey will be graded for the month of March, 30% will be graded for

class work and participation.

Santos – Saints. Each student will choose one Saint and do a biography in Spanish.

70% of this project will be graded for the month of April, 30% will be graded for

class work and participation.

May – Cooking: How to prepare Mexican tostadas – Clase de cocina – Tostadas.

Food – Comida

países?

Students will research about the food in other countries.

This project will be graded for the month of May.

Quizzes

Quizzes will be given almost weekly, to assess students’ understanding of course concepts. Quiz results will help the teacher in the assessment of the course’s pace and content. To perform well on quizzes, students must keep up with the material and homework. Quizzes may or may not be announced.

Assessment

Students’ participation in class is used to assess understanding. Therefore, there will be a portion of the

final grade each semester that is based on participation. The student’s attitude and effort in class will be

very influential in the process report grade mid trimester. Formal report cards will be mailed at the end of

each trimester.

Absences

It is the student’s responsibility to obtain class notes and assignments that were given in their absence. Arrange with a friend to obtain the class notes and homework given. If a student is absent for one day, any homework assignment must be completed by the second day after their return. If they are absent for more than two days, arrangements for assignments need to be made with the teacher. If a student is absent on the day of a test, the student must make arrangements with the teacher to take the test ASAP. The student is responsible for all materials covered and assignments missed during an absence.

Asking for help

Spanish moves at a fast pace. If you ever feel that you don’t fully understand something, please let the

teacher know as soon as possible so it can be explained differently. Every lesson in Spanish is a

communication building block. If one misses too many blocks, communication is weak at best. Please do

not wait until it is too late. I am happy to meet with you individually either before or after school to provide

additional instruction, but you must let me know!

As an additional resource, there are websites with great grammar tutorial: www.studyspanish.com,

www.duolingo.com They have a free tutorial. Also, all the Spanish grammar is explained and accessible

free of charge. It even has some exercises. Signing up for their paid services is not necessary.

Having fun

Learning a foreign language may seem like a daunting proposition, but it does not have to be. It is an

opportunity to open new doors, new opportunities, and new cultures. With an open mind, some work, a

bit of courage and a willingness to not take oneself too seriously, it can be a fun journey of discovery.
