Prayer for Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order

and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. Dur-ing this hurricane season we turn to you, loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with you Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calam-ities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of grat-itude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. Bishop Maurice Shexnayder

The eyes of all look hopefully to you,

and you give them their food in due season.

— Psalm 145:15

Centennial News Catholic Hospital in Lafayette Arrives \ by Accident- In 1945, Bishop Jeanmard and Fr. Isenberg, rector of the Cathedral in Lafayette, were involved in a car acci- dent near Baton Rouge and were treated at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge. They were both impressed with the care they received by the Francis-can Missionaries of Our Lady who ran the hospital. Isenberg immediately began working to bring these same religious sisters to the city of Lafayette. His dream was established on August 1, 1949, when Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital opened with 50 beds just a few blocks away form the Cathedral of St. John. August 15 —Fete Dieu de Vermilion. Liturgical Roles for August

From the Pastor’s Desk

As I mentioned last week in this space, we are about to spend some time listening to the Gospel of John at Mass, for the next few weeks. This 6th chapter contains what is known as the “Bread of Life Discourse”, and is John’s rich and beautiful teaching on the Eucharist. Unlike Matthew, Mark & Luke, John does not have an account of the institution of the Eucharist, or the words that we have memorialized in our celebration of the Mass: “This is my Body. This is my Blood.” Instead, we are given this chapter, with Jesus as the “Bread of Life”. “The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” Etc.

The important thing for us is to make the connection between this discourse of Jesus, and what we do at Mass Sunday after Sunday, week after week. I recently stumbled across a collection of quotes, the first three of which are from the Vatican II document, “Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy” (1965).

“The liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time, it is the fount from which all the Church’s power flows.”

“Christ is always present in his Church, especially in its liturgical celebrations. He is present in the sacrifice of the Mass, not only in the person of his minister, . . . But especially under the Eucharistic elements. By his power he is present in the sacraments, so that when a man baptizes, it is really Christ himself who baptizes. He is present in his word, since it is He himself who speaks when the Holy Scriptures are read in the Church. He is present, lastly, when the Church prays and sings, for he promised, “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

“The Church earnestly desires that all the faithful be led to that full, conscious and active participation in liturgical celebrations called for by the very nature of the liturgy. Such participation by the Christian people is their right and duty by reason of their Baptism.”

The last quote is a bit older, by St. Cyril of Jerusalem, in the 4th century: “Make your left hand a throne for your right, since your right hand is about to welcome a king. Cup your palm and receive in it Christ’s Body, saying in response, ‘Amen’. . . . After partaking of Christ’s Body, go to receive the chalice of His Blood. . . . Bow your head and say, ‘Amen’ to show your homage and reverence and sanctify yourself by partaking also of Christ’s Blood.”

Words worth thinking about.
