SA Precision Aerobatics – July 2016The extended Queens Birthday weekend at Mildura is always a lot of fun and good flying for the annual SA vs VIC

challenge. Some will travel Friday and get some good air time in the quiet evening airs, others do their orientation etc. on their first run on Saturday when called to do the manoeuvres.

The teams lined up Saturday morning – the locals not to concerned at the 1-2C temperature and it was clear we would need to pull out something special to combat the VIC team where ages went from 14-87 – all bases look covered but we were not without good guns, especially in the freshening winds.

The 2 classes of F3A and Advanced did 2 rounds with the Expert/Sportsman getting in 3 when we finished about 5pm. A good day and with great Victorian meats and local foods none were left wanting, (Thankyou Hosts!), except for Jeff Boyd who had a landing incident and found that landing on a table/chairs didn’t do his model much good. But easily solved if you like driving to 12:45 am to go home and get another! All admired his stamina and dedication.

Sunday started with a much better forecast – lower wind and sunny, and at times it was warm too... and with the Advanced/F3A groups starting one of their two rounds then followed by the single round for the others all came out with 4 rounds each finishing at 5, when thanks, acknowledgements and the results were given and trophies were presented and VIC came up with the goods to take out the new perpetual prize for the weekend.

Some were to finish the weekend with a few runs on Monday before heading back. Mildura was very busy and many places booked out – a very large event of motor cycling, triathlon, eisteddfod (music) and another one or two (I forgot) gave the town atmosphere... so thank you Mildura for a well-run and challenging occasion.

AAC Peacemaker/Flite Streak/Ringmaster Stunt Competition June 4th 2016

This themed stunt event is one of the most popular AAC events and 7 keen entrants enjoyed good conditions or the time of year. It was Holdfast MFC member Bob Tait’s first CL aerobatics competition. He completed both rounds without mishap and had a good time in the process. AAC hopes to see Bob at future events.

Bonuses for model designs were: Peacemaker 10 points; FliteStreak and Ringmaster 5 points; all other profile models with motors less than 6.5 cc were eligible but with zero bonus points.

Round 1 was a warm up for most entrants who improved their scores in round 2. Maris Dislers’ 10 bonus points for the Peacemaker design pushed him ahead of Alan Roadknight and Peter Anglberger in Round 2. For this event the MAAA Vintage Stunt pattern and scoring system are used. There are no difficulty or ‘K’ factors so scores tend to be close. The places were determined by the better of the two rounds plus the model design

AAC Grass Rat Race Competition June 4th 2016Despite significant recent rain the field was fortunately not too muddy and really did not affect take offs and landings

to any extent. The 7 teams entered comprised local, Whyalla and Victorian competitors. A good number of spectators enjoyed the action. Grass Rat Race is a much simplified version of team racing, with no restrictions on whipping the model and locally ROG is optional, so some interesting models and flying styles were evident. The heats were all 100 lap two up races (1 compulsory pit stop), bar Heat 3, to minimise the pilots circle being churned into a mud bath.

In Heat 1 Murray Wilson must have thought he was flying combat staying very high for a long time before overtaking. Allan Morris tried to block the questionable tactic and there were a few mid-air near misses early on until the CD warned both teams they would be DQ’ed if their ‘exuberance’ continued. Both pilots then settled down to fly in a more sensible manner. In the end it was a close race. Both teams had good airspeed but Morris / Stephens motor proved a little slow to start both at the beginning of the race and at the pit stop. Allan Morris flew well and almost made up the lost time to be only 7.5 seconds behind Wilson /Ellins who won with a 5’05” time.

Both teams in Heat 2 had trouble with either starting at the beginning of the race or in restarts at the pit stop. Jeff Fry brought his own design rat racer in perfectly for pitman Peter Anglberger but he found the Parra 2.5 ABC a little

reluctant to restart losing valuable seconds reinforcing the adage that good pits tops win races.

Heat 3 was a 3 up race. Jason Anglberger found the shut off of Rod Fitzgerald’s Goodyear model a little too sensitive which resulted in a couple of unplanned stops after take offs off resulting lost time that was difficult to make up despite good airspeed. Dislers/ Baker also had motor gremlins leaving Mark Ellins who swapped pit duties to be pilot, with Murray Wilson pitting,to easily win the race.

All teams took the option of flying a second race to try to improve their times and qualify for the 200 lap final.

In heat 4 Jason again accidentally shut off after takeoff but had completed a lap so had complied with the pit stop requirement. The tank was large enough to ensure the 100 laps were completed and a good time resulted with a place in the final beckoning. Mark Poschkens

pancaked his model too hard at the stop due to not having a shut off and the motor ingested some dirt do a restart was not attempted, so they retired.

Heat 5 was a good clean race with both teams flying and pitting well. Morris /Stephens pit stops were improving but their motor setting had deteriorated a little compared to their earlier heat so a slightly slower time resulted. Dislers / Baker had now sorted out their starting issues and flew a good race. Furious whipping by Maris helped to achieve 5’20” time but this was unfortunately not enough to reach the final.

The last heat saw the fastest time of the day, Wilson / Ellins with slick 4’42”. Fry / Anglberger suffered from both a less than ideal needle / compression setting and a slow start at the pit stop, which practice should cure as the model has potential.

The 3 up final was somewhat of an anticlimax. The troublesome J. Anglberger / R. Fitzgerald shutoff resulted in a retirement at 34 laps leaving Wilson / Ellins vs Morris / Stephens in a ‘two up’ final. The race was quite close as Mark Poschkens, the owner of the model that Wilson / Ellins flew in the heats, ‘confiscated’ the model he loaned them but offered a slightly slower one to try to make for a more interesting final. Morris / Stephens stepped up to the challenge and flew a near faultless race, but in the end the winning team of 2016 World Champs Silver and Gold F2C medallists Wilson / Ellins finished 26.5 seconds or 9 laps ahead despite the imposed handicap.

CMFC- RETRO DAY 2016 Re scheduledAfter very poor weather conditions on 5th June, Constellation Model Flying club will be holding another RETRO day on Sunday the 21st

August 2016. Here is a chance to remember the models and equipment of yesterday and acknowledge the contribution these designs made to our hobby. Eligible Aircraft Any control line, free flight or radio controlled model aircraft, power or glider, designed and flown before 1980. Excluded are scale aircraft and ARF models.

Here are a few examples, RC- Taurus, Kwik Fly, Contender, Kaos, Smog Hog, Astro Hog, Super 60, Rudder Bug, Radio Queen.

The importance of down thrust and Balance in your new ARF power model - Geoff Hennig MAAA 6053

You’ve just completed a new ARF model and checked out the balance point, control throws and direction. It looks good but will it fly right? With your fellow club members watching and few extra heartbeats you line up ready for that first flight.

Increasing the throttle gradually, you begin to take off. At half speed all is going well and you apply full power and a smidge of up elevator and wow/ouch it gets airborne and climbs vertically. Having an excellent power to weight ratio, if you leave full power on it will loop

or power stall.

Hoping it will glide well, you slam the throttle shut and breathe a sigh of relief as you glide to a smooth power off landing. Time for a coffee.

You have yet another ARF power model that has no required down thrust built in and no instructions about it. Further the balance point (C of G) is not published on many ARF model instructions.

I have had a P-51B that had its published balance point 50mm incorrect and Classic Trainer, Fokker DV11, Sbach and Boeing Stearman all requiring a large dose of down thrust and in some cases a little side thrust. In some cases no balance point is published and the model has been recommended for beginners.

Three to five degrees of down thrust has been the usual modification required. It may only take the carefull installation of a few washers on the motor mount or with one trainer a rebuild of the engine mount to get things right but it can cost the inexperienced pilot a crashed model.

Does your new model need down thrust? I suggest you can only fly it to find out but be prepared for a wild “ride” and leave plenty of runway ahead for a “glide on” landing.

Hey Charger!Apologies to Chrysler Motors but I’m referring to battery charging, not the classic Chrysler Charger from the 1970s

which some of us can recall, and its catchy advertising slogan “Hey Charger!”.

Our investment in model aircraft can be quite significant, whether it’s time spent scratch building, assembling an almost ready to fly (ARF) model, the amount of balsa and other material used, equipment such as internal combustion (IC) engines and electric motors, servos, batteries, and usually some dollars (often lots!). So how do you protect your investment? One of the key factors is battery management.

Old hands will generally have a good understanding of battery management, so for those of you new to model flying, this article is intended to give you some insight into this black art.

Newcomers who front up to Sunday morning training at Holdfast will more than likely arrive with an electric powered ARF/RTF trainer. Some of these trainers will have their electrical equipment factory fitted, whilst others will need equipment to be purchased separately and fitted during the model’s assembly process. The instructions that come with these kits sometimes can be cursory, particularly relating to proper charging of the flight battery.

Now, there are batteries and there are batteries; their chemistry varies significantly. If you have some older batteries they are likely to be nickel cadmium (NiCd). Nowadays flight batteries are generally nickel metal hydride (NiMh). There’s also your starter battery, a 12 volt sealed lead acid (SLA) unit; and your glow driver which is probably a NiCd unit. If you have an electric powered model it will almost certainly use a lithium polymer (LiPo) battery. Let’s not forget your transmitter, which may have disposable AA alkaline batteries; or rechargeable NiCd, NiMh or LiPo batteries.

Unfortunately, failures can occur mid-flight if the battery is not sound and cannot cope with the current drawn by one or more servos. The consequences of such power loss are potentially catastrophic; an unguided missile is a major risk to safety. The good news is you can minimise the risk of such an event by keeping these rechargeable battery types in good condition. How? Get yourself a good quality charger. There are many computer controlled chargers available which can accommodate the main battery chemistries we use, have the capability to detect the status of the battery and charge it to its peak. In addition, they can balance each of the cells in a LiPo battery. These units can also be programmed to cycle your batteries (discharge and charge), which is strongly recommended. However, be careful when discharging batteries as they should not be discharged completely, only to their safe minimum advised by the manufacturer.

Rechargeable batteries do have a finite life, so it’s prudent to replace them after a reasonable time - the amount of use or charging cycles. I make a point of replacing mine every two-three years, depending on how often the particular model is used. I see it as an important maintenance requirement that will help prolong the life of the model.

Another factor to consider is the quality of your intended battery checker and charging unit. Check out the model shops, talk to the old hands at the field, check what Google has to say, but please do not grab the cheapest until you’ve done some research. Regrettably some units purchased online do not live up to their promise. Invest in your investment by buying quality equipment.

been without a bit of drama and in hindsight I should have picked up the problem.

The first flight saw a very good take off to the east however on my first turn cross wind I experienced a sudden glitch with the model suddenly turning in the opposite direction however it quickly returned to the direction I wanted. On the next circuit the same event occurred and again it corrected and I nearly completed the circuit when again as I went into the crosswind circuit the same thing happened . Again it returned to normal and I gratefully landed the plane.

My first thought was that there was something wrong with my receiver so on returning home I changed the receiver.

The next flight I experienced no glitches but only managed four circuits before the engine cut for a dead stick which I put down to engine overheating.

About a week or so later I went up for another fly with a large chunk cut out of the cowling for some extra cooling and I felt very confident that this would be a good flight.

With the wind coming from the north I had a good take-off and turned cross wind and was about to turn into the downwind leg when the turn became a spiral dive . Nothing I tried made any difference and in she went with the result you can see above.

With the help of members at the field we retrieved the model and found a check of the model did not reveal any thing out of the ordinary which you always like to find (not !!)

Back home a more careful check again did not provide any solution and wildly I am thinking transmitter fault or a second receiver didn’t work so I made a call to Bill Kent (my electronics “guru”) to see if he could help.

Tests at Bill’s place at Strath’ proved that there was nothing amiss as far as the Tx and Rx was concerned ( that was a relief !)

The next items to be tested would revolve around the connection between the Battery switch, the battery and the connection to the receiver.

Using various testing methods, an LED Bar Voltmeter and equipment Bill established that if we connected the receiver battery directly to the Rx there was no issues discovered but if we connected the battery up to the commercial Switch and tested everything under load there was an immediate reduction in servo speed and some failure of one or more of the servos - here was the problem !!

It appears that the charging switch/battery connection was the issue. Bill believes that it was caused by considerable

resistance in the switch wiring due to them being very thin and this coupled with a possible interference problem from the running of the aerial along the bottom of the fus’ adjacent to the leads of the digital servos being at the end of lengthy runs to the extremities of the wings and rudder/elevator.

So, there you go , it could have been avoided if only I had known of the problem when connecting this commercial switch. The test with the LED bar voltmeter would have also alerted me to the issue.

Since doing these tests I have found a Turnigy 3 function switch available from Hobby King with the following specs:

MASA Website Garry advised new website is now operational. Clubs are reminded that the new MASA website has space available to accommodate smaller clubs without a website to publish their individual newsletters and calendar events. Three have already taken up this offer.

MASA/Club Banners. We only have one Club logo in an acceptable format. Logos are required in JPEG format.Public Relations Officer suggested that this project be placed on hold until we have sufficient club logos because a fresh quote will have to be obtained from the supplier.This item will be reviewed monthly for now.

ORS SA Grants. Secretary has again corresponded with them to ascertain any progress. We have received the same response from Sport SA as previously advised in that are unable to assist MASA and requested evidence that other states have approved aeromodelling as recognised as a sport.President and Secretary will now seek an audience with the Minster for Sport and Recreation, Mr Bignell.

Control Line Despite June this year being a wet month the weather on most Saturdays has been reasonable and allowed two events to be held by Adelaide Aeromodellers Club at Park 19, Unley Rd last month and early this month.The Peacemaker / Flite Streak Stunt competition on June 4th which was open to any profile model, but design bonus points were awarded to the contestants’ flight score as follows: 10 points for a Peacemaker and 5 points for a Flite Streak. This year Ringmasters were included so they also received 5 bonus points. Holdfast MFC’s Bob Tait enjoyed his first ever CL stunt contest and managed to successfully complete the Vintage Stunt pattern with his Taipan 2.5 diesel powered Peacemaker in both rounds without mishap. Congratulations to Bob on surviving his ‘first time’. AAC hope the bug has bitten and he will compete in future events.The ever popular Grass Rat Racing competition took place on July 2nd. The field was muddy in patches but most models and teams coped with the conditions. The event featured entrants from Whyalla and Melbourne who were in town for another event described later in this report. Racing was mostly fast but always furious.

The CL Category Chair will submit articles for these two events to the Newsletter editor for inclusion in the July edition.

After the Grass Rat Racing event concluded at 4pm competitors ‘raced’ home to shower and change to reconvene ay the Royal Tandoor Indian restaurant on Unley Rd for a World Control Line Champs medalist celebration dinner. SA’s Rob Fitzgerald, Mark Poschkens and Victoria’s Mark Ellins and Murray Wilson were guests of honour. Around 25 attendees enjoyed the meal and most partook of a slurp (and spill) of the champagne filled World Champions’ very heavy Crystal trophy.

GENERAL BUSINESS

SFI Report - Garry reported that he has had 3 meetings with the training team with another scheduled for Thursday this week.Also advised that the President has obtained a quote for Spectrum DX8 TX and TX suitable for our RC simulator.Moved ORAM seconded SMAC that this equipment be purchased at a cost of $936.00. carried.

Garry is available to attend clubs meetings to demonstrate the simulator and encourage members to become instructors. Also to intends to produce videos of manoeuvres, especially for Gold Wings, to show the acceptable standard and provide discussion.

SSL. – Club wishes to construct an additional shed to house their tractor etc. at a cost of $10,000.00 and sought feedback from the committee as to whether approval would be given for a loan over 10 years with the first 2 years interest only. The meeting provided positive feedback providing the proper application is submitted n terms of our MOP.

HMAC.- Advised that the club was successful receiving $5500.00 from the MAAA Club Assistance Scheme this year.This year is the 60th Anniversary of the formation of the club and a dinner has been arranged for the 6th August at Club Marion. Cost $40 per head. Full details on the club Web site.

66TH MAAA NATIONALS – NSW ASSOCIATIONS

The 66th Nationals to be held in NSW during the 2012/13 period will be a split event.

Control Line events were held in Albury from 28 December 2012 to 3 January 2013.

Free Flight events were held at Narrandera from 3-8 January 2013. Results for these events are available on the MAAA website at www.maaa.asn.au

Radio Control events are to be run by the R/C Special Interest groups who will coordinate their own individual events at various locations throughout the year.

2014 F3J (Glider) World Championships

League of Silent Flight will be conducting the selection trials for the Australian F3J team to compete at the 2014 World Championships. It is intended to run the trials in conjunction with this year’s annual Jerilderie Gliding tournament. This tournament will be held over the June 8th to 10th 2013 Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

2014 F5D (Electric Pylon) World Championships

Location will be Maryborough MAC, Maryborough, Queensland on the 5th, 6th, 7th October 2013.

Format is a single event over the 3 day long weekend, minimum 9 rounds. Other racing classes will be flown on the weekend as well, to give time between rounds of the F5D competition.

Entry is open to all registered MAAA members as well as open to affiliated international competitors.
