Holdfast Model Aero ClubHMAC would like to invite all MASA Members to visit their Web page atHoldfastmac.asn.auYou will find all the latest news from the “Club on the Hill” in our Monthly Newsletter “BUZZ”. It is easy to find and available for all to read from the drop down menu. The President’s Notes are a regular item. Also results from Point Ten Pylon and other events are always published along with announcements for various upcoming events.

The recent introduction of HMAC’s LIFT initiative has resulted in a number of persons taking advantage of the offer of three free flying sessions before making a decision to join the club and continue with learning to fly radio control

models. A key element with the initiative is that the newcomer does not have to purchase a model or associated equipment until their training has advanced and getting close to solo standard. By then the student would have an appreciation of what model, transmitter etc. would suit their needs. When the equipment has been purchased, training would continue with the student’s model and transmitter until solo has been achieved.

The equipment, generously donated by Modelflight, comprises three E-Flight Apprentice trainer aircraft which have gyro stabilisation, three selectable flight modes (beginner, intermediate and advanced) and a “panic” switch when activated has the ability to return the aircraft to level flight. The beginner and intermediate modes limit the amount of control input by the student. Modelflight also donated three slave and three master transmitters, which were programmed by club stalwart and “Buzz” editor Geoff Haynes. We instructors had input to an operating manual compiled by vice president Kingsley Neumann. Many thanks to you both.

From an instructor’s perspective, the LIFT initiative has proven beneficial. Having three identical models with a similar master/slave radio setup makes it easy to swap from one student to another knowing that each model/radio setup will be the same. From a student’s perspective this system enables them to fly reasonably well from their earliest flights, even undertaking take-offs and landings much earlier than would be expected under the traditional training method. In turn this enables the student to gain confidence and ability early in the training syllabus. As the student progresses the flight mode would be changed from beginner to intermediate to advanced. It is important to note that whilst the slave transmitter is set to beginner or intermediate mode, the master transmitter is set to normal (equivalent to advanced) mode so that the instructor has full control input at all times.

Again from an instructor’s point of view, the student’s new found confidence has to be tempered by the fact that their early flying success is owed in a large part to the stability and flight mode system built into the Apprentice trainer model. That is, the on-board electronics are managing the flight regime, making things easier for the student. I find it useful to explain to the student how the system works and to point out that the model is very light and cannot be compared to the typical model of balsa and ply construction that is/was traditionally used for training.

As an aside, flying one of these models in beginner or intermediate mode is an interesting experience. The limitation

NOARLUNGA MODEL AERO SPORTS

Firstly, I must apologise for missing the last couple of MASA News issues but it is hard to contribute when you are on the other side of the world.

This month, I want to share my recent overseas experience with you all.I understand that we are all into model planes, but I am sure that most of us have an interest in full size aircraft as well. While in England, I had the pleasure to visit RAF Duxford (not far from Cambridge) on our spare day on what was a very

short tour in the UK to not only tour through the museums which are full of aircraft of various types that you can not only walk around and through and touch in some cases, but as luck would have it, was also “Flying Legends” day where all sorts of WW1 & WW2 aircraft (and one ring in) actually put on demonstrations over a two-hour period in the afternoon. Let me say now that if you have not been to Duxford or one of the other Imperial War Museum fields in the UK, you have a void in your life. My travelling companion was none other than Paul Kumela who was visiting family in England at the time. Paul has been to Duxford previously and was a valuable guide for me.

The first building we visited is known as “AirSpace” and contains such planes as Concorde 101 (which was the very first test bed for the eventual airliner). This plane carried six tonnes of test equipment and never carried passengers but is fitted out with a section of seating to show how snug it must have been to travel at above the speed of sound from Paris to America etc.

There was also a Handley Page Victor in a workshop undergoing restoration and will go on public display soon. It is hard to list all of the planes in this building, but here are a few; Vulcan bomber; Lancaster; Spitfire; Avro York; de Havilland Comet; Hawker Harrier; Tornado; Hawker Sea Hawk; Westland Wasp helicopter and many many more.

We paid three pounds to walk through 10 aircraft including the Concorde, Comet, Viscount, Britannia, VC10, Trident and One-Eleven.

Because we only had the one day it was a bit of a rush but we then headed to the American Museum which has such as B52, SR71 Blackbird, F111, B25 Mitchell bomber, P51D Mustang, Boeing Stearman in the same colours as the one by the NMAS field, B17 Flying Fortress, B24 Liberator, P47D Thunderbolt, Grumman Avenger, and many more.

We just had time to tour the land museum with its assortment of tanks, artillery & dioramas of life in the trenches, before the flying started at 2pm.

This was a real bonus for both of us as we initially thought we were just visiting the museums. The line-up of aircraft that flew was as diverse as those on display in the museums. There were Mustangs, Spitfires, Hurricanes, Red Bulls polished P38 and their polished B25 Mitchell, B17, DC3,

Messerschmitt’s, Sea fury, Avenger, Corsair, AT6, P47, Hawker Hind, and others that I have probably missed.Every group did formation flying and some very low passes over the field and the sight and sound was awesome.I mentioned a ring-in before; while one of the P51D’s was stooging around in the background, awaiting his turn over

the field we happened to spot a rather large black aircraft with him and it turned out to be an F22 Raptor. This plane came from one of the USAF bases in England, I believe. It flew a couple of low and slow (for a Raptor) formation passes with the Mustang and then a couple of solo runs at speed. When he turned away at speed, the noise set off just about every car alarm at Duxford. To put it mildly, it was deafening. If you like planes, put this place on your bucket list guys at it is simply awesome.

If I ever get back to the UK, I would go there again to see all the bits that we had to gloss over this time.

Next month, I’ll write about things closer to home.

Happy flyingSee you at the field

Snoopy..

on the control inputs makes it difficult or impossible to do manoeuvres such as rolls and loops. Also, the stick inputs have to be held rather than returned to neutral, e.g. turning requires constant aileron input instead of rolling to the desired angle of bank and centring the stick. This is not a natural input for an experienced flyer; nevertheless it helps the student in the early stage of training.

The club is pro-active in attracting new students, and the LIFT initiative has done so. This augers well for the continued future of the club. Some of us that have seen many summers go by realise that the existing membership needs new blood; otherwise it will be a dwindling membership and a club with limited prospects. Let’s not let that happen.

John Jefferson

Scale Aircraft Society of South Australia Visit to Skyhawks Aeromodellers field on Sunday the 18th July 2016

The weather god was very kind, with mild temperature, low wind, and partial cloud, happily occurring after some rotten weather earlier that week.A large number of SASOSA members travelled to Blakeview that day to fly with theSkyhawks Club. These included some members from Concorde Club who arewithout a flying field at presentSkyhawks members got involved with visitor’s scale models and owners, and greatcamaraderie prevailed all day. Many different scale models were present, including Garry Bergen’s well known verylarge and striking Boeing Super Stearman biplane. Other models included EmbrearTucano, a large Tiger Moth, DH Chipmunk, JU 87 Stuka and a North AmericanHarvard. There was a Kawasaki Ki 61 Hein ("Swallow") – aka “Tony”, and 2 largeSukhoi 26’s, a large Hawker Sea Fury, Spitfire Mk 9, a US Army Cessna O-1 BirdDog, Fleet Bi-Plane, P38 Lightning, and Hawker Hurricane. Also present wereseveral examples of Cap 10’s and Piper Cubs, as well as a Decathlon. There was avery unusual and rarely modelled Russian 1930’s high wing amphibian model of aShavrov SH2 with a 4 stroke engine flown by Wayne Eckert. Giant and microversions of the Pitts Model 12 “Beast” biplanes demonstrated extremes in model sizechoices that can be made.Several large models were equipped with smoke generators and sometimes one hadto pick a visible flight path quickly. The only casualty occurred that day due to poor gluing on the foam of an electric

P38 causing an abrupt end to the flight. It is understood that this is repairable usingmore glue than before next time around. The Skyhawks members flew their many and varied models including some drones, and in all, there was a wide and varied range of R.C. models in the air on the day. Those present enjoyed the new seating, and paving put down under the shade – nomore dust or mud – a great job. Many thanks to Skyhawks club for providing afantastic flying venue, their hospitality, and a great lunch – and of course bouquets toall of the kitchen volunteers.

FPV CHAMPIONSHIPS ADELAIDE ROYAL SHOW

The MAAA MASA and Adelaide Multi Rotor Pilots have been working together for several months with the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society to stage an FPV National Championship during the 2016 Royal Show. The

event will be open to all who participate in FPV “Drone” Racing and who consider themselves proficient enough to compete in the races. The event will be a Public Display conducted at night under lights and will be subject to MAAA MOPs and CASA permits. Entrants must be members of the MAAA. During the planning stage, contact has been made with Adelaide FPV RACING who have agreed to participate and have been included on the planning committee. Although this club is not affiliated with MASA or the MAAA they have agreed to take up membership of the MAAA as a condition of entry. Adelaide FPV Racing has worked closely with the MAAA, MASA and Adelaide Multi Rotor Pilots to develop the track design and to coordinate and design a great event for South Australia and the Royal Adelaide Show.

The Royal Show is putting $25,000 up as prize money and we are all hoping that this will be an incentive to participate. Trials will be held prior to the event to determine eligibility for final entrance. A State and National competition will be run over the 10 days of the Royal Show. The Show society hope intends to make this event an annual event. For further details and entry condition contact the RAH&S or go to http://theshow.com.au/show-entries/fpv-racing.jsp

To make this event happen, we don’t only want flyers we need helpers to act as safety marshals and scrutineers. Each person who volunteers to assist on one or more of the nights will receive free entry to the Show on the day nominated. If you are interested in helping, please send a registration of interest email to [email protected]
