Miracles are indications that God is always present in our lives and are opportunities to grow in our faith in Him. We may question why we see no miracles today. However, we do experience miracles every day, the beauty of nature, the birth of a child or the reconciliation between enemies. Unfortunately, we tend to dismiss these events because we experience them so frequently that they become routine and they lose the impact their miraculous value. For that reason, the Lord does not accede to our prayer requests and accomplish out-of-the-ordinary miracles on a regular basis.

In performing miracles during His ministry, Jesus had a twofold purpose. One was to entice people to come to listen to His message about the Kingdom of God. He used miracles to bring the people to Him, for once the word spread that there was a man who could cure any ailment, people rushed to Him to observe and experience Jesus’ healing. Since the people flocked to Him, Jesus could bring His messages of salvation to greater numbers. Jesus changed the expected order of natural events. He brought dead people back to life. Jesus cured people who had long suffered from diseases. He satisfied hungry crowds with a few loaves and fish. These miracles brought to the attention of the Jewish people that Jesus was different from one of the prophets in their history. Jesus was singular because His words could cure the human condition and He promised even more joy at the moment of death if one had faith. Once the people recognized that Jesus was not a charlatan, the Jews began to hope that He was the promised Savior.

Jesus’ other purpose in performing miracles was to confirm that His Father was a gentle, loving father for all people. What father would not want the best for his children? Therefore, Jesus demonstrated, in performing a miracle, for anyone to reach out to Him in faith, that the Lord cared for each person in His gift of healing. Jesus introduced a new perspective of God. For centuries, the Jews had been living under the Mosaic Law that taught God is a vengeful God. When the Jewish people sinned, they expected God in His wrath rightfully to punish them. The Law also allowed for a person to seek like retribution from one’s neighbor for any misdeed as in “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth...” (Exodus 21:24). In dispelling the concept of divine or human retaliation for sin, Jesus introduces the idea of a loving God and the need to love one’s neighbors. Jesus, therefore, also brought the promise of spiritual healing.

Even today God continue to perform miracles for us for the same reasons, to provide for those with physical needs because He is our loving Father. More importantly, however, He provides miracles for those in spiritual distress. When one sees a miracle occur, is not one’s faith in God reestablished? Miracles provide a physical confirmation that God is present our lives. God accomplishes miracles for us to become aware of His merciful love and to let us know He always hears our prayers.

Throughout the three years of Jesus’ ministry, He reached out to the people with His words and miracles. Many people, in the time of Jesus, focused only on His ministry of miracles because of the immediate difference He made in their physical condition. We too tend to concentrate on praying to the Lord for the improvements in our physical lives. We ask for healing for those who are ill or injured, a better job, or improved relationship with others. In praying for these commendable wants, it becomes easy for us to forget that Jesus came into the world to bring us to deliverance from sin not solve the difficulties we experience in our human lives. Jesus’ focus is always on our heavenly salvation.

Pray; for God always listens.

Dear Parishioners of St. Agnes I bring you sincere greetings and prayers from Uganda especially from Our children and staff of St. John the Baptist Ndibata Secondary School. We greatly thank you for your continued support love and support that so many kids can get an education which would not be possible without your support. We currently have 26 staff members and 247 children in school. 147 of the children are girls in the boarding section. we are really happy to provide quality education for these children. Our school has been ranked so well in our region and in the country. Our successes are because of your continued support. We are currently working on a number of things to get our school even much better. We have solved the water crisis, thanks be to God! Now trying to get a better girls dormitory and modern bathroom where we will have a good Menstrual Hygiene Management which is a still an issue. We once again thank you greatly for your support and continue to pray for you always that the good Lord rewards abundantly. Yours, Fr. Jude T. Ssenngendo

ATTENTION LADIES OF ST AGNES!

Are you interested in becoming more involved with the church? Altar Society is a perfect way to get involved and meet other parish ladies too! The Altar Society serves the parish community in a variety of ways. Traditionally, all women of the parish belong to this organization. This special organization is for all women of our parish, no matter age, occupation, gifts or time one has available. We encourage all women of the parish to sign up for at least one committee of Altar Society. Please provide both your email address and phone number to better organize committees and get Altar Society news communicated. *If you are already a current Altar Society Member, please fill this out for the new member spreadsheet. Thank you in advance!

Altar Society Committees Include:

Reception Committee: responsible for planning and hosting church receptions including RCIA rite of election, confirmation, first communion, and senior breakfast. This also may include any other receptions for the parish throughout the year. Social Committee: Altar Society hosts 2 yearly meetings, or “socials;” one spring and one fall social. This committee is responsible for planning and hosting these socials. Soup Supper Committee: Altar Society hosts 3 Lenten soup suppers per year following Stations of the Cross and Mass. This committee is responsible for organizing these suppers, including providing soup and bread to serve. Fall Dinner Committee: Fall Dinner is the biggest yearly event for the Altar Society. All members of Altar Society are encouraged to help with this event, but this committee specifically is responsible for the organization of this great event. Funeral Dinner Committee: Hosts funeral dinners for parish families. *Altar Society is a very vital part of St. Agnes. Obviously, the more members each committee has, the less time and responsibility each individual member will need to provide. Again, all women of our parish are encouraged to sign up for at least one Altar Society committee. Thank you for your time and dedication to St Agnes! Parents and faith always matter

There have been frequent news reports about the secularization of America, with focus on

young adults who don’t feel religion has a place in their lives. The good news is that recent studies show that in close and loving religious families, parents are just as likely as ever to pass on their religion to their children. Close parent-child bonds make the difference. Researchers found that when a child feels emotionally close to a parent, he or she is more likely to adapt the parent’s religious practices. When raised by a warm and affirming parent, it is easier for a child to understand and relate to a warm and loving God. Religious parents model what they preach. Children are motivated to follow in their parents’ religious footsteps when the parents practice what they preach. That kind of authenticity is compelling. Surrounding children with a loving faith community, teaching faith practices, encouraging service, and being a consistent presence were noted as convincing to children who adopted their parents’ faith when grown.

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel: Mark 5:25-29

On the Way to Mass: How would you describe your faith? On the Way Home From Mass: What in mind, body, or should do I need to work on healing with divine help? Living the Word: Ask your family if they have been inspired by anyone who has a chronic illness. Have they witnessed faith by the way the individual is able to maintain a joyful attitude despite the illness? How does this person portray hope to your family and others? As part of your prayer, ask God to continue to sustain the faith of these individuals. Allow time also for family members to consider how they treat adversity in their lives. Are they able to hand their problems over to God?
