She has done an excellent job leading the school with it being a good shape for the remainder of the year. I very much enjoyed my sabbatical including the opportunity to visit other schools learning best practice. My visit also reassured me that by comparison John Paul College is a high performing school with excellent students, hard-working staff, superior facilities and effective governance. The enrolment process was completed earlier this year for a number valid reasons. We have sent out acceptance letters for 2020. A number of prospective parents have notified us that they were caught out by the earlier enrolment timeline and have not made an application. On this basis we acknowledge the issue and the school is prepared to accept applications until the end of August 2019. Please contact Sue Rowles, the Enrolment Secretary, as soon as possible if you wish your child to be considered for a place at John Paul College in 2020. Term Three “The Serious End Of Business For Seniors”. We effectively have 10 weeks left for our students in Years 11 to 13 to complete the syllabus, assignments and prepare for external exams early in Term 4. The key driver for staff this term, including teachers and Dean's, will be ensuring that every student is on track to achieve NCEA levels 1, 2 and 3. Please give the staff at John Paul College your full support and cooperation to ensure the success of your child. This includes following up at home that they are completing their homework, reviewing paid employment and putting in place a study timetable. The following extract from a newsletter at St Pauls College, Hamilton, contains key sentiments that we would like parents and students take on board at JPC. Vaping is the use of an electronic cigarette (e-cig) or vaporizer (vape) to deliver nicotine, marijuana and/or other chemicals to the body. Vape contains liquid chemicals (e-juice), along with a mechanism to heat those chemicals in a very small device. They come in many styles (see the information attached which provides photos of what they look like and some of the vapes that have been confiscated from our students over Term 2). Vapes heat the chemicals to create an aerosol form of those chemicals that get delivered into the body and often into the environment. Vaped chemicals enter the lungs, bloodstream and brain within seconds. The user can often have a feeling of light-headedness, dizziness or experience a rush or high, which may set off cravings for more. Purchasing or possessing a vape (with nicotine additives) under 18 years of age is illegal, but in New Zealand, in its poorly legislated position over vapes, there is little regulation or control. Many of our students are buying vapes online and just ticking the box on the order form online agreeing that they are 18 years of age (even if they are not). There is no real proof of age required. Australia, in contrast, does not allow vape shops you can only buy online, it is illegal to vape in public/out on the street/in a vehicle where children are present. Given that this is a new product, there is little definitive medical research on the long term health risks. Early indications are that it may have a potential impact on asthma and lung issues and it is uncertain of the impact of unwittingly introducing artificial chemicals into the body. Some of our students have informed us when questioned that they are concerned about the addictive nature of using vapes and have asked for assistance in helping them with this issue. It is important that you talk to your son/daughter about the potential impact of vaping on their future health/sporting performance. For us as a school, we will continue to treat vaping at school in the same way as we deal with students who use cigarettes. God bless Patrick Walsh Principal

Preventing Measles at the Anchor AIMS Games: Advice from the Bay of Plenty Medical Officer of Health

There is a measles outbreak affecting several areas of New Zealand with more than 280 confirmed cases reported so far this year. The upcoming Anchor AIMS Games in Tauranga will be bringing many people together from around the country and from overseas, and so it is important that you are aware of what to do to reduce the risk of getting measles and of spreading measles. Measles symptoms Measles is a highly infectious disease and can be more serious than many people realise. Symptoms include fever, cough, red eyes and a runny nose, and then a rash which develops after about three days. Complications can include ear infections, pneumonia, and, more rarely, encephalitis (brain inflammation). About one in ten people with measles need to be hospitalised.

What you can do before the Anchor AIMS Games The best measles prevention is the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine which is free for everyone in New Zealand. The first dose of MMR vaccine is usually given at 15 months of age and the second dose at four years of age. People born before 1 January 1969, when the vaccine was introduced in New Zealand, do not need the MMR vaccination. They are almost certainly immune as almost everyone got measles prior to the vaccine being available.

All students, and any adults born after 1 January 1969, who will be attending the Anchor AIMS Games should check that they have been immunised. Anyone who is not fully immunised (that is, has had two doses of the MMR vaccination) and was born after 1 January 1969, should see their doctor or practice nurse to get immunised as soon as possible. It takes up to two weeks after being vaccinated to gain full protection.

MMR vaccination is very effective in preventing measles. Approximately 90-95% of those who have had one dose of MMR vaccine are protected and having two doses mean you have a 99% chance of being protected. Anyone who is not immunised, and who has been in contact with someone with confirmed measles in the two weeks prior to the Anchor AIMS Games, should not attend the event.

During the week of the Anchor AIMS Games To ensure the wellbeing of the participants at the Anchor AIMS Games, and to ensure that the event does not inadvertently facilitate the spread of measles, please note the following: • Anyone with measles will be required to stay away from the Anchor AIMS Games (and other sporting events and school) for seven days from the appearance of the rash and until recovery, or as advised by the local Medical Officer of Health. • Anyone born after 1 January 1969 who is not immunised and has contact with someone found to have measles may be required to stay away from the Anchor AIMS Games (and other sporting events and school) for 14 days from the last contact with the sick person. For more information about measles and measles prevention in the Bay of Plenty please see: https://www.toiteora.govt.nz/measles.

The business end of the season is approaching fast and both JPC rugby teams are sitting in good spots, which will hopefully put them into semi-final contention. JPC 1st XV is currently second in Division 1 and has two regular season games to play against Aquinas and WHHS. Both of these games are at home and promise to be difficult encounters. The team has had the holidays to reflect and get some injuries under control and we hope to have all the team available for these games. A number of the JPC 1ST XV were named in the BOPRU U18’s training squad from which they will select the BOP Team.

Congratulations to Patrick Gillam, Haydn Benge, Dale Jacobs, Sam Lennie, Jack Dowd, Shayden Herbert, Kyle August, Luke Veltman, Nick Briggs and Keegan Coomber. Their first training session was last Friday and the selection process will start. Good Luck! JPC U14’s have three more games in their regular season, two at home. They currently sit in third place (2 points off the pace) in the championship and have a blockbuster this coming weekend against the championship leaders. They also have a game in hand and will play the other two teams in the top four in the next two weeks. Exciting times! Come along this Saturday and support our two teams in their quest to reach the finals. FUNDRAISING WITHIN JOHN PAUL COLLEGE A reminder to all Coaches, Managers and Parents, if you are considering any form of fundraising, which also includes applying to Trusts, all fundraising queries must come to your teacher in charge of the sporting code or if there is no teacher in charge, Arthur Faulkner or myself. There is a fundraising form which must be completed and approved by myself and Mr Walsh before any fundraising under the JPC name can go ahead. As you can appreciate we have a lot of sporting codes within the College who are all wanting to fundraise. This must be well coordinated so first off we know about the fundraising and secondly we are not targeting the same businesses as this has previously happened. The PTA are our major fundraisers and we must work around anything they may be doing at the time as well. Please check the process with the staff member in charge of your sport and if you need any help completing the form, please be in contact and I will assist. The form is attached to this newsletter. Thank you for all you do to support our co-curricular codes within the school. Without your dedication and hours of time we could not offer our students these opportunities. Kia ora tātou from the Counsellors. Welcome back to term three. We hope you enjoyed the extra time with your young people over the school holidays. As students get back into the busyness of the new term, it can be easy for them to fall into the habit of looking for problems and stressors instead of focusing on all that is going well in their worlds. To this end, we have put together a “Contentment Calendar” for term three. (See below). Often our vision is clouded by our expectations. If, as a way of protecting ourselves, we have negative expectations, our mental health can be badly affected over time. The calendar below has a positive suggestion for each school day. The aim of the calendar is to help us refocus and pay attention to more of the positive things that happen around us. We hope your young people, and you, find it helpful and uplifting.
