Water Polo Girls will start training week one term 3. So if your daughter is interested in learning and being involve with Water Polo, please see Mr Faulkner. HUGE MILESTONE FOR AIMS GAMES September’s Anchor AIMS Games has breached two significant milestones, with more than 10,000 athletes from over 300 schools heading to Tauranga. When registrations closed at midnight 15th June 2017, 10,139 intermediate-aged competitors had entered, from 302 schools around New Zealand and the Pacific. Entries have been received from Indonesia, Tonga, the Cook Island and Australia, while for the first time, 10 para-athletes will also compete in the week-long tournament, with five each in cross country and swimming. Last year, 9300 athletes from 271 schools took part in the 21 sporting codes but 72 new schools this year have helped push the numbers through the roof. Former AIMS athletes continue to make their mark on the world stage, with a host of All Blacks, hockey stars, netballers, rowers and sailors having cut their teeth in Tauranga over the 14 years the event has been running. Netball remains the largest code at the tournament, with a staggering 1464 players competing for 122 teams this year. That is an extra 16 teams from last year, which was already New Zealand's largest netball tournaments at any level. Basketball has jumped from 75 teams to 97 in a year, with 1164 athletes set to take to the courts, while girls’ football has gone from 28 teams to 41. Gymnastics has gone from 308 to 399,canoe slalom, which has pretty much doubled numbers from its debut last year, with 60 competitors entered from 17 different schools. Squash and sailing have nearly broken through the 100-athlete barrier too, with squash boosted by the extra profile of Tauranga hosting next month’s world junior championships. BMX numbers have also increased after its debut in 2016, while there will be 306 indoor bowlers this year, sharply up from the 250 last year, and an extra 30 hockey players in the 6-a-side mixed division. Factbox: - 10,139 athletes - 302 schools - 21 sports - By the numbers: badminton 181 players, basketball 97 teams, BMX 98 riders, canoe slalom 59 paddlers, cross country 844 runners, football 100 teams, futsal 39 teams, golf 60 players, gymnastics 399 athletes, performance 52 groups, hockey 81 teams, multisport 219 athletes, netball 122 teams, rugby sevens 62 teams, squash 97 players, swimming 363 swimmers, table tennis 158 players, tennis 117 players, water polo 28 teams, yachting 99 sailors. RUGBY 2017 This past weekend saw only two of the four teams play. The onset of winter illnesses has been instrumental in a few teams unable to field a fit 15 players this year. The 1st XV had a call Saturday morning to inform them that Opotiki did not have enough players and would not be travelling to Rotorua. The 2nd XV had called Tarawera College during the week to inform them that with sickness, injuries and other commitments they would not be able to field a team and so defaulted. The 1st XV travel to Bethlehem this weekend in a must win game to assure them a place in the semi finals. The U15's travelled away to Tauranga Boys College and were beaten by the better team. They play another TBHS team this weekend and hope to turn around the result. The U14's travelled to the Mount and they too left with a loss. They hope to get their season back on track this weekend against Tauhara. NETBALL As we enter the holidays just a reminder that there is netball on the 8th and 22nd of July (first and last weekends of the school holidays). All players are expected to be there unless organised well in advance with the team coach or manager. Thank you to all the girls who were so organised with handing in their old uniforms, to get all uniforms out in four days was a huge task but we did it. I extend the biggest thank you to First Sovereign Trust, without their financial support I would not have been able to purchase dresses for all 12 of our teams. I also want to say thank you to all the girls who have been playing in miss matched and ill fitting uniforms, you carried on with no moans and groans and I appreciate your positive attitudes. I encourage any parents or caregivers to get down to the courts and watch the girls in action. We are very lucky to have talented players across all year levels and they would love to have your support.

RECIPES REQUIRED Year 12 student Madeline Snell is making a school community recipe book full of our school community favourite family recipes. As well as producing a recipe book that we can buy, Madeline will also be using the project to earn NCEA Level 2 credits in both Young Enterprise and Food and Nutrition. She has been requesting recipes for a few weeks but has only had 20 recipes given to her. She really needs about 100 recipes for her book to make it a worthwhile production, however she cant make any more progress until she has more recipes. She'd like any family favourite, tried and tested, good recipes please. Starters, mains, desserts, slow cooker, baking ... she'll take anything. If you are able to help Madeline by sharing a family recipe, please take a photo or scan it and email to me [email protected] or madeline at [email protected]. Madeline also wants to write a little bit about the background of the recipe so she will contact you directly.
