This week’s Maori phrase:

Kōrero mai (Talk to me/ us)

A message from the JPC

Group By Soo Jung Jin Students Against Dangerous Driving at JPC aim to raise awareness amongst young people about the dangers of unsafe driving. Road death is the second most common cause of death for young New Zealanders and every year on average about 110 young people (aged 17-24) die on NZ roads in crashes caused by dangerous driving. The most dangerous time for young drivers is the initial six months after they get their restricted licence and teenagers are 18% more likely to be involved in serious road accidents.

Learning to drive and getting our license is a very exciting time; we finally get to start driving, we can go anywhere and gain some independence. However, a text message, an argument, distractions from passengers, fatigue, substance use or just a single alcoholic drink are all potential causes of accidents. As teenagers, we may think that we've heard this over a thousand times and that ‘it won’t happen to me’, but think…………. Why are so many young people dying on our roads?

The SADD message is, that we as young drivers can and should make the right decisions to protect ourselves, but others too. We want to encourage all young drivers here at JPC to think carefully about the choices they make before they get into a car to drive or as a passenger. We want to change the ideology from, ‘it won’t happen to me’ to ‘that could be me?’ For more information about SADD or if you are interested in joining the JPC SADD group visit https://sadd.org.nz/ or come and chat to Mrs Fraser.

The weekend started off with the U16’s hosting WHHS on Friday. There was some pregame discussion about eligibility and equalling of numbers however this all went out the window when the game started. During the game there were periods where the 12-man JPC team were playing against 15, however this did not affect the result. JPC came away with a solid win 37 - nil.

The U14’s travelled to Trident for their instalment of rugby and managed to come away with a hard-fought win 36 – 24. They came away from the game with a few injuries that they hope will be sorted for next week’s game.

The 1st XV played RBHS 3rd XV at JPC. This was a close affair with RBHS taking the lead with an early converted try. JPC battled their way back into the game and for a 25-minute period showed glimpses of what they can be capable of. JPC scored 2 unconverted tries to take a 10 – 7 lead into half time. Following half time, RBHS came out and scored two quick tries from JPC mistakes and then add another to take a 26 – 10 lead into the final 15 minutes of the game. JPC managed to score a try and their focused returned. They were battling and managed to score another try to sit at 26 – 20 with 3 minutes to play. Unfortunately they went close but RBHS managed to hold them out to take the win. This championship is going to be close as other results from them were not predictable. On Sunday the rugby family went and helped the RSA in completing the recording of the servicemen’s graves at the Rotorua Cemetery and Crematorium in Sala Street. Now with this completed, we will be at Kaue Cemetery in Ngongotaha next time.

TOP QUALITY FOOTBALL IN A TOP QUALITY PLACE The JPC Boys’ 1st XI Football team had the privilege of playing on the main field of the Rotorua International Stadium this weekend in a performance worthy of such a great venue. The weather played its part too, with a day of beautiful sunshine and little wind. Although the game was a little slow to start, once the goals started flowing, it was plain sailing all the way. And that is not to diminish the opposition – they didn’t just sit back - but JPC just had the extra top quality in the final third of the field.

Joel Sutton had a solid defensive performance with

Vedansh Singh confident out wide, leaving little to do for Jamie Williams, the JPC keeper. But to be fair, there is quality all over this team, with Cailyn Trask coming off the bench to score a hat-trick, a superb long-range goal from George Crouch and a few other closer range efforts from a variety of players, such as Karandeep Basra and Vedansh Singh. With the speed of Daniel Arasanmi and the long stride of Ben Keaney, easily able to take on players, JPC caused all kinds of difficulty for the opposition. To see goals coming from players of all positions on the field shows great diversity and adaptability in this team.

The final score was an impressive 10-0 win and coach, Jason Trask, couldn’t be more pleased with their progress. As many of the players are from Year 11 at the moment, we should have a solid and improving team for the next couple of years ahead, who will hopefully climb to the premier division by the time they reach Year 13. Congratulations on a great win in what is turning out to be a very impressive season.

ON-LINE WORK EXPERIENCE Tutored Internships available for ages 15 -18

Operation Wallacea has been leading remote expeditions for university and school groups wanting to get involved in real biodiversity and conservation research for 20 years. By doing so we have become experts in planning, training, and delivering complex projects. The work placements we are proposing offer students with an interest in science, English, marketing and project management the opportunity to work alongside our team of internationally-renowned scientists, business development, marketing and expedition management experts.

Placements will be run entirely online, allowing students to work from the comfort of their own homes whilst recreating a genuine work-from-home environment via a carefully managed daily schedule, regular deadlines and constant contact with managing staff via remote working software including Microsoft Teams. Our placements are designed not only to give students an insight into working life, but to develop a range of core skills that are both directly relevant to careers in STEM and transferable to many other career paths, as well as linking closely to their school curricula. Science Internships £100: 5 days with start dates in August, September and October 2020 Students choose from a selection of projects they wish to work on, including Caribbean coral reefs and their fish communities, spider monkey behaviour and large mammals in an African savannah. They will then complete a week-long programme designed to support them through the entire research process, from project conception and data collection, to data analysis and science communication, producing a final scientific report that would be ideal as an independent research project towards their broader studies. Our programme will include introductions to computer coding in R, GIS and the production of maps, and statistical analysis of data, which are transferable skills that would look great on any students’ CV and university application. This internship would suit students with an interest in natural sciences and data analysis. For more information go to: https://www.opwall.com/schools/educational-benefits/work-experience/

Reminder: Year 13 Students Now is a good time to set up a personal email account that is separate from your school email address. Come December when you have left School, you will lose access to your school email address - which means that if you have used this to register with outside providers, you will be unable to send and receive information about your future studies. If you set up a new email address now, this can be something you use from now into the future (well after leaving school and even through University). KEY DATES AUGUST
