New Year’s Message from the Bishop:

Dear Members:

Wishing you a peaceful Happy New Year! May your year be filled with happiness and good health! Our Jodo Shu founder Honen Shonin taught us that by calling Amida Buddha’s sacred name in our daily lives, we can live happy, enriching lives in gratitude with the feeling of okagesama (“thanks to you”) through Amida Buddha’s protection and guidance, and when we pass, Amida Buddha welcomes us to the Pure Land. In his final message, Ichimai kishomon, Honen Shonin wrote, “Earnestly practice nenbutsu [call Amida’s sacred name].” This is the es-sence of our founder’s teaching. When we say “Namu Amida Butsu,” Amida Buddha is always with us—always comforting us, always giving us encouragement and hope. When we wake up in the morning, let us put our hands together in gassho and say “Namu Amida Butsu” as a reminder to be grateful for our lives this very day and endeavor to do our best. At the end of the day, before we go to bed, let us put our hands together and say “Namu Amida Butsu” in appreciation for our lives guided by Amida’s Compassion. The Betsuin observes many services including Sunday service. It is my hope that through your nenbutsu and prayers to Amida Buddha during the temple services and visits as well as in your daily lives, you will have a prosperous and fulfilling year in 2017! New Year Message

“A Happy New Year!” “ Akemashite Omedeto Gozaimasu!” Congrat-ulations! Another new year has opened up! First of all, I would like to thank everyone for your help and support for Jodo Mission, especially I would like to thank the volunteers who worked so hard last year. Because of your help, the activities such as O-Bon, Bon Dance, Bazaar, Mochi Making and so on were very successful.

I know the new year has just started, but I already have a favor to ask you. We lost 127 members during the last year. As of the time of printing of this bulletin, our membership is only 617. I am feeling a sense of danger about this unusual decrease of our membership.

If you know anybody who can help us, such as your son, daughter, your niece or nephew, your sister or brother, or even your friend, please let me know.

Also, if you have any idea to increase our membership, please let me know, too. We are always open to your creative ideas.

Now, the door of 2017 is open! Let’s pray for more good things to happen during this year. If you lost your beloved ones last year, let’s pray for them to be able to live their happy and peaceful second lives in the Pure Land.

At the end of my message, I would like to thank again all of our members, supporters and friends, and ask for your continuous support for Jodo Mission.

May Buddha keep on shining upon us and may you have a very Happy New Year!

In Gassho, Rev. Yubun Narashiba Jodo Mission of Hawaii Head Minister

2017 New Year’s Jodo Mission of Hawaii President’s Message Dear Members,

Akemashite Omedeto Gozaimasu! Wishing you a Happy New Year! For 2017, my wish is for you to be filled with happiness a great majority of the time.

In a perfect world, we could wish for happiness all of the time, but when we think about it, without some suffering and challenges, life would become boring and we would not have the experiences that make us appreciate life even more. When we fail, we appreciate our efforts and all the ups and downs, so when we do succeed, it’s oh so sweet and wonderful. Even the impermanence of life, the fact that our time is limited in this living realm, encourages us to appreciate the present moment, so we cherish our time with our loved ones, work passionately on projects that excite us, and absorb the beauty of nature such as the sun setting into our beautiful blue ocean. We develop a deeper gratitude through our understanding of impermanence so even when we lose a per-son we love; we are able to generate positive energy by all those wonderful moments we shared with that person, and it’s this energy that encourages us to live life the best that we can with the precious time we have before us. Thus, suffering and challenges can be a fuel for our happiness through our practice of gratitude. When you combine gratitude with all your positive practices of the Eightfold Path – Right Understanding, Right Purpose, Right Speech, Right Conduct, Right Livelihood, Right Endeavor, Right Thought, and Right Medi-tation, you will be filled with joy. With Warmest Aloha,

Jon Riki Karamatsu President of Jodo Mission of Hawaii

Gyoki-e (Honen Shonin’s Memorial Service)

Gyoki-e means the memorial service for Honen Shonin. Honen Shonin, who is the

founder of Jodo Shu, passed away on January 25th, 1212. He was 80 years old.

After Honen Shonin passed away, his disciples and believers started to have a

memorial service for him on the 25th of every month. The biggest ceremony was held

on 25th of January every year. This service was held not only locally in Kyoto but it

spread all over Japan. In those days, the word “Gyoki” meant the anniversary of the

deaths of the Emperors or their wives. The word “Gyoki” was such a respectable word

for the Emperor's family.

Three hundred years after Honen Shonin passed away, Emperor Gokashiwabara

mandated Jodo Shu to call the anniversary of Honen Shonin’s death “Gyoki”. Since

then, people called his annual memorial service “Gyoki”. This occasion implied that

Honen Shonin was clearly accepted and revered by the Emperor and the people.

Our Gyoki-e service will be held on January 15th at 10 a.m. Please join us.

Chutoba is available for this Gyoki-e service. At this service you may also honor

your deceased ancestors with a Chutoba prayer. See above for the Chutoba order

form.

Finch’s talk was on “Buddhism for a Polarized World”. FAQ: How should we discard Kagami Mochi? ANS: Because of the unique climate of Hawaii, Kagami Mochi gets moldy much faster than in Japan. Therefore, it is recommended to take the mochi down after the first three holy days of the New Year (i.e. on January 4th), although it is a common practice in Japan to keep them until Janu-ary 11th.

After you take them down, it is best to eat them very soon. However, in Hawaii, it is quite pos-sible that the Kagami Mochi is already moldy. In that case, sprinkle a dash of salt on the Kagami Mochi to purify them just like Sumo wrestlers puri-fy the Sumo ring with salt and wrap them with white paper such as paper towel, and then throw them away.

Or you may soak the moldy Kagami Mochi in water so the mold will easily rub off the mochi and can be eaten in soups, fried or can be cooked over the hiba-chi.

Brain Health Guest Speaker: Jody Mishan January 29, 2017 at 10 a.m.

On Sunday, January 29, 2017, at 10 a.m., our guest speak-er will be Jody Mishan of the Hawaii Alzhei-mer’s Disease Initiative, University of Hawaii Center on Aging who will talk about brain health for kapunas and caregivers.

The human brain is such a fasci-nating subject! As we grow old or have older parents, grandparents, or know some elderly people, this subject affects all of us. Wouldn’t you like to learn more? Please come and hear Jody Mishan on Sunday, January 29, 2017.
