M indfulness and Buddhism
In an art icle enti t led “How to Pract ice Mindfulness
(Buddhism)”, i t is stated that “mindfulness ” is the abi li ty to see
things as they are, wi thout the cloud of fee lings , prejudice or even
mood. “Mindfulness” is part of the Buddhis t Eight Fold Path at
number 7: “Right Thought” We should cherish our thoughts
because our words and our act ions arise from our thoughts . And number 8: “Right Medi tation” We should think often of Amida
Buddha and repeat His Holy Name. Namu Amida Butsu.
In western cultures the practice of mindfulness is used as a
therapeutic technique to reduce s t ress , pain , and even help with
depress ion.
You can begin your own mindful pract ice by finding a quiet
p lace, then focus your mind on the present moment —do not th ink about other things—like I must f in ish this project because of an up-
coming deadline, someone said something said something to me to-
day which was not nice, my chi ldren do not l i s ten to me, my hus-
band does not l i s ten to me, my body has so many aches and pains or
whatever the case may be. Do not th ink of these unpleasant
thoughts , but s i t in s i lence and focus on your breathing to elimi-
nate dist ract ions . Practice focusing on nothing.
As you become more mindful of the present , p lease recognize the things around you that you may have taken for granted. Thank
you for each day you are alive. As Bishop Hara a lways says to
reci te the O-Nenbutsu or Namu Amida Butsu ten t imes each day as
you awake and before going to s leep or at any t ime during the day
and thank Amida Buddha for th is wonderful day!
At Jodo Mission, we have been practicing musical medi ta-
t ion which is qui te di fferent and beauti ful ! You s i t quiet ly and
concentrate on your breathing and at the same t ime lis ten to some beauti ful music played on our beaut i ful grand piano. Rev. Nakano
says he likes American music so on Sunday, May 25 for example , he
played “Shuka Tsuki -kage” and then played “My Way”. He always
s tarts out wi th “Shuka Tsuki -kage” which is from a poem from our
founder Honen Shonin and then plays a song like the Beat les song
“Yesterday” or “Pearly Shel ls” or a Japanese chi ldren’s song
“Yuyake Koyake”. We get to calm ourselves for these few minutes !
Baccalaureate Sunday
Ashley Mizuo, grand-
daughter of long time
member, Masa Kitaji-
ma, was the honoree at
the Baccalaureate service
held on May 25, 2014.
Photo on left is Ashley’s
family. Ashley graduates
from Iolani High School
Guest Speaker on Bac-
calaureate Sunday was
Rev. Irene Matsumoto
of Palolo Kwannon
Temple. Rev. Matsu-
moto is such a wonder-
ful speaker and gave
Ashley encouragement
on such a wonderful life
she has to look forward
to and wished her the
best. Rev. Matsumoto
was born in Wahiawa
and when she saw
Ashley’s grandfather,
Masa Kitajima, it just
lit up both their faces as
they reminisced the past.
In her talk, Rev. Matsu-
moto reflected on her
own experiences, some
quite humorous!
Above is a photo of
Rev. Matsumoto with
Yoshiko Kitagawa.
Rev. Matsumoto is also
good friends with Mrs.
Kitgawa’s daughter,
Audrey Kitagawa, who
also is a wonderful
speaker and was our
guest speaker in April.
Thank you Rev.
Matsumoto for such an
inspiring talk. How
nice to be so young as
Ashley!
Sunday School congratulated Ashley for
some day they too will be graduating
from high school.
Fujinkai Fundraiser
The Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai is
selling the HBC Cook Book Vol. 2.
This volume is similar to Vol 1 which
was a colorful Cookbook in which
recipes were gathered from temples
of the Hawaii Buddhist Council.
Rev. Yubun Narashiba cooked these
many different recipes, took colorful
photos of the various steps to the reci-
pe and put the recipes together in this
Cookbook . The Fujinkai ladies very
much appreciate all the effort Rev.
Narashiba has put into this Cookbook
and be a fundraiser for us. Please
stop by the Jodo Mission of Hawaii
office to see a copy of the Cook-
book.
and will be going to Loyola
University Chicago majoring
in journalism. She is the
online Editor-in-Chief for the
Iolani “Imua” newsletter. She
also plays the oboe in the
Iolani Wind Ensemble. She
also is a color guard for the
Iolani marching band. Ashley
has a bright future ahead of
her and we wish her good
luck at Loyola University!

HOLD MEMORIAL SERVICES
for Your Loved Ones’ Date of Passing
In Buddhism, memorial services are
observed on the date of passing, which comes
every year, and at the anniversaries, which
come every 4-6 years (please refer to the chart
of anniversaries as posted on the right).
At the memorial services, the family offers
flowers, food and incense to Amida Buddha
and their loved ones. Of course these offer-
ings are meritorious, but it is most required
that the family willingly recite “Namu Amida
Butsu (I take refuge in Amida Buddha)” bear-
ing sincerity toward the deceased person. It is
an opportunity for the family to honor the
deceased person as well as to clarify the
meaning of their lives, by learning the imper-
manent nature of life and appreciating the link
of lives of their ancestors. Services can be
observed at Jodo Mission of Hawaii or at your
home altar.
