PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE – FELIX BACHMANN Not often would I dedicate an entire message to congratulate and thank our entire

school community, but after such an amazing school production like ‘Footloose’,

how could we not. What an outstanding product staff, students and our

community delivered and first I want to make people aware of the timeframe that

this was achieved in. It was only just over 2 school terms ago when our

enthusiastic Creative & Performing Arts (CAPA) department and their Head

Teacher presented the senior executive with ‘Footloose the Musical’ proposal.

We know we have a supportive community, great staff and talented students and

this was evident in the outstanding end product that was witnessed by all (some

even travelled from as far as Melbourne). There is always a risk that in a thank you

message such as this someone is missed. The production coming to life has involved hundreds of people, I will

attempt not to miss out any individuals or groups, but apologies up front if that does occur.

First and foremost we want to congratulate and acknowledge the contribution, hard work, commitment and

dedication of our students to their roles in the production. One of our commitments as a school is to enhance

leadership opportunities and promote citizenship, and didn’t we see that in full swing throughout the entire

school musical journey. Our cast, musicians, choir, dancers, student choreographers, back stage crew, sound and

lighting team and constant assistance of students with costumes/sets/rehearsals set up, YOU WERE AMAZING!

For this to occur it takes many staff and community partners to present such a professional production. You the

students demonstrated what makes Jindabyne Central School such an outstanding place to experience and

engage in your formal education. Be proud of your commitment, teamwork, hard work and effort because we are

extremely proud of you. It was such a professional production I’m sure we could take it on the road for several

months, maybe years, to rave reviews.

To our parents and whole school community, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We acknowledge

every parent who got their child to rehearsal on time, sourced or made their costumes, helped them learn their

lines. Without the constant support of your children and the school such major events such as this would not be

feasible. In the just over 12 months I have seen this over and over again, for nearly every event, initiative or

project the school engages in. It is a credit to our parent and community body and another element that makes

Jindabyne Central School be able to provide such a plethora of additional opportunities for our students. It’s an

endless list of supporters. Our community musicians, dance

troupe choreographer, costume coordinators, hair and

makeup coordinators, Instrumental coaches including voice

coaches, front of house coordinators and those who

supported with set design, preparation and tasks that just

needed assistance at the last minute. Thank you once again

to the whole school community that literally dropped

everything to support the opportunities and success of the

musical.

and individuals this production would not have been possible. Our aim was always to keep costs to a minimum

and for the entire production to break even, and through the additional support of our sponsors we were able to

teamwork and sacrifice for the good of our students and this did not go unrecognised. As the Principal, I thank

you, but the students and community explicitly saw the positive impact that was made on our students and we all

appreciate your contribution. As well as all staff, I want to acknowledge our families. Every staff member/teachers

family is part of this success as well. They support us in going that extra mile for our students even when it can

make their own lives more difficult and/or stressful. To all my staff’s families thank you for supporting your loved

ones.

A great start to term 2

Another amazing start to yet another amazing term. I apologise to the parents who

see the same opening line for each newsletter, but it’s a fantastic truth about our

school who continue to offer and create learning opportunities well above what is

the norm for a comprehensive school. I know Mr Bachmann has outlined just how

proud we are of the achievements of those involved in Footloose, The Musical, and I

want to express my personal thanks to each child, staff member and parent involved.

That being said, JCS also had some remarkable achievements away from the stage:

Our Equestrian Interschool’s team were outstanding at the recent events held at The Station, coming third in the

overall schools rankings. Not being a horse person myself, I was particularly pleased to hear the individual stories

of success, both big and small, of each of our riders over the days. Thanks to Ms Kavanagh for organising the event.

Our senior students have been learning about safe driving at the Year 11 RYDA and Year 12 Snowy Hydro Driving

courses respectively. Feedback from our students was that both days were exceptionally worthwhile to them and

the hands on experiences provided will no doubt serve them well on our dangerous roads.

Emmie P (Year 12) was selected to audition for School Spectacular across three different areas – an amazing

accomplishment.

Our school hosted the zone cross country carnival last week at Sport and Rec. A huge amount of thanks needs to

go to Mrs Kowalewski for the organisation of this, not to mention the help of students and staff in making the day

a success.

Our Year 11 Physical Activity and Sports Studies/Sports Coaching students helped support the local small schools

athletics carnival. We have had rave reviews of their leadership and hard work on the day – well done.

We have a group from our SRC currently representing the school at the annual SRC conference. Thanks to Mr

Marshall for facilitating this event and giving our future leaders worthwhile and real leadership opportunities.

On top of all of this, well done to students who completed NAPLAN. We were (some might say fortunately) still

working of the paper system and I commend all the students who put in their best efforts. Love or loathe NAPLAN,

it provides an opportunity for students and teachers to see where areas of improvement can be made.

Parent Portal and Attendance

Our new Parent Portal is fully underway and, after fixing some glitches with Sentral last week, is now working both

on the web and the app. If parents have not yet received their codes to log in, please email me at

[email protected] and I can email through the appropriate information. Parents will also note that sms

messages are going out for unexplained absences in the secondary section of the school on a daily basis.

The portal’s next great challenge will be parent teacher interviews, which are going live at the writing of this report.

Please note this will be the only way to arrange meeting for parent teacher nights this term.

Uniform

After some significant consultation with students, parents and the broader community we are nearing the release

of an updated uniform policy in the school. Whilst the details will need to wait, I want to thank all of those who

have been involved in the process. Rest assured, voices were heard! Until it’s release, please remember that full

school uniform is monitored and upheld in the school.

The Jindabyne P&C consists of parents, carers and community friends who contribute their ideas and skills to the school in a variety of different ways to support the school for the benefit of all students. During Term 2, the P&C have raised money from the following events:

Mother’s Day Stall Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who donated their time at the various events and donated baked goods for us to sell.

JCS NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS COMING UP!

JCS’ NAIDOC celebration is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever.

So much action planned for Thursday 4th July starting with the unveiling of our WELCOME TO COUNTRY

plaque by a Ngarigo elder. Our assembly will be led by our Aboriginal students with our talented musicians to

perform Aboriginal songs, and there will be a traditional smoking ceremony.

The biggest Bush Tucker BBQ allowing all our 942 students a taste of Aboriginal foods will be highlight of the

day.

The afternoon will be a fun filled extravaganza of Indigenous activities led by our Tumut based Aboriginal

Educators from Kosciuszko National Park, Tahlia and Shane. Richard Swain and local Aboriginal artist and

mum, Pauline Coxon are the team to assist our students’ exploration into Aboriginal customs and practice.

Parents are invited and encouraged to participate in our celebrations, however, you will need to jump online

and organise a WWC check for volunteers. Confirmation of your WWCC will need to be provided to the school

office prior to the day.

These celebrations are student led and are yet

another opportunity for our talented youth to strut

their stuff. All our team organisers and members are

leaders, communicators and team players.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia

each July to celebrate the history, culture and

achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous

communities, but by Australians from all walks of

life.

Under the theme – Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work

together for a shared future – “It’s time for our

knowledge to be heard through our voice. – an

Indigenous voice of this country that is over 65,000

plus years old.”

The theme also aims at highlighting our various First

Nations’ desires for lasting and effective agreements

such as Treaties- which cannot be achieved unless

we have a shared, truthful understanding of the

nature of the dispute, of the history, of how we got

to where we stand.

The history of our First Peoples is the history of all of us, of all of Australia, and we need to own it.

FOOTLOOSE THE MUSICAL A HUGE SUCCESS!

There is nothing like a musical to showcase the range of talent at JCS and the students certainly impressed the over 700 community members and friends from Jindabyne and surrounds who were treated to one of the school’s best musicals staged, JCS Footloose the Musical. Many positive comments were made about the two public shows that were held Friday 10 and Saturday 11 May, including that the students were well cast, confident and talented natural performers in acting, singing and dance. The shows were held in the JCS Gymnasium that was transformed into a great looking theatre with highest quality sound production and great lighting. Two midday performances were also held for JCS students, local area schools and senior citizens so the cast and crew were well prepared for the two big shows. “Kyan Thompson, Cade Lette, Mitch Johnson and Gill Boxsell were fantastic as male leads both comedic and mature performers, along with the amazing female leads Kahli Henley, Jade Old, Marlee Diver and Emmie Phillips. The extraordinary supporting cast choir and dancers were the backbone of rehearsals and the show,” said Director Roberta Worsley. “Every student from Year 5 – 12 had talent and worked incredibly hard, listened to direction, attended rehearsal and collaborated with a sense of fun and positivity,” she added. It was also an incredible feat by the band who learnt 28 separate pieces of music for the shows that is more than they would learn in a normal year curriculum, representing a fantastic opportunity for all the music students who were involved in the production. Music Director Katie Blazey commented that the band were consummate performers who did well creating an atmosphere during the show. Mrs Blazey thanks the many people who assisted in coaching and rehearsing with the student band including the lead up to the show. While the cast and crew are to be commended for their commitment and determination in putting in the hard yards to make the show a success, there are also so many people who contributed to the production. With so many to mention the JCS team sincerely thanks everyone who contributed in important ways to the successful staging of Footloose the Musical.


What is it like to host an exchange student? Interview with the McLennan family.

The McLennan family from JCS are hosting Hinako Seino

from Yokohama, who is in Year 11. This interview with

Penny McLennan is to give some insight into what its like

to host an exchange student. The McLennan’s want to

give Hinako an opportunity to expand her experience

and is seeking interest from another family willing to

host for some her current stay.

Why did you decide to host an exchange student?

We saw the ad from AFS in the school newsletter asking

for families who wanted to host a Japanese student and

thought it would be a good opportunity as Nick is going

to do Japanese for the HSC. Also Nick’s father, Brett, went to Brazil as an exchange student when he finished

school and it was a great experience so we decided to apply.

Is the language barrier difficult?

Luckily Hinako’s English is amazing so we have only had a couple of funny misunderstandings. I have only learnt

two words of Japanese so far! Slow learner.

Do you get paid?

No, but Hinako pays for all her school expenses (uniforms etc.), clothes, activities like netball etc. It is really just

food and electricity etc. that the host family pays for.

How long will Hinako stay with you?

Till July or December. AFS students generally stay with two different families over the 10 months so AFS are

looking for another Jindabyne family to host Hinako after her stay with us. We are quite happy for her to stay

longer with us but when Brett did his exchange he said changing families was an important part of the experience

so if there is another family in Jindabyne who is looking to host that would be great.

Has it been a good experience?

Definitely. It was a bit strange at first and for the first week we were

all on our best behaviour but it feels very normal now. For a week

there were no arguments around the dinner table but it didn’t last!

However we are sitting around the table longer and chatting which is

nice. Hinako is very studious so has been a good influence and has

been lots of help with the Japanese homework, as well as advanced

maths! It has been good for us because we have made the effort to

be tourists in our own backyard and show Hinako all our favourite

spots and things to do around here, as well as doing a great road trip

up the coast.

We are still learning things new things about Hinako’s life in Japan

though and how different things are. She is from Yokohama which is a

city an hour by train from Tokyo so Jindabyne is a very different

experience!

Student creativity on display at Lake Light Sculpture

JCS once again participated in this years Lake Light

Sculpture Event that was held during Easter along the

lake foreshore in Jindabyne.

The event proved to be another huge success with

over 100 sculptures on display plus the addition of

new events and experiences including a smalls

sculpture exhibition.

JCS entered a number of sculptures that were worked

on during class during Term 1 in the lead up to the

event.

The Final Straw by JCS’s Year 8 group was the winner

of the Schools Award.

Students give their vision to the GO Jindabyne plan.

Imagine you’ve just stepped foot in your ideal

Jindabyne of 2036. Write a postcard to tell us what

you see.

As part of the Go Jindabyne strategic plan process all students at

JCS were given the opportunity to have their say on what

Jindabyne should look by 2036.

Each student were given time to give feedback on their ideal

Jindabyne that was sent to the Department of Planning for input

into the community consultation process of the plans

development.

JCS students embraced the moment and showed they were big

thinkers and had many great ideas for the future of Jindabyne.

Students of 2C were concerned about the towns services and

that Jindabyne had better facilities for aged care, better public and

disabled toilets and a hospital rather than theme parks. Aqua Park

featured highly along with zip lines, a new skate park, a bridge over

the lake, more play areas and a bigger shopping centre.

The majority of secondary students were keen on more water

activities, better sports facilities and more public transport

around town and to the snow or at least the ski tube that was

more affordable. While MacDonald’s did feature many wanted no

MacDonald’s rather a boost juice and more healthy cafes.

Year 7 Science Year 7 students have been exploring human body systems in our Staying alive unit. They are beginning to realise how important cells, tissues, organs and organ systems are in helping us to stay alive and how interconnected body systems are. Whilst learning about the excretory system, students conducted a kidney dissection which was fascinating for all. Two students also created a model to demonstrate the workings of the urinary system - complete with a toilet stop at the end!

Year 8 Science After “”Exploring Kosci” in Term 4 last year, Year 8 students are now studying the “Developing Kosci” unit. Within this unit, they will learn the importance of National Parks and resource management. To begin the unit, students were challenged to complete an Ecological Scavenger Hunt - taking photos, not wildlife! It was great to watch them use technology responsibly to photograph each item, research new terminology, and upload the images to share amongst the classes.

Year 11 Biology The size of some of Australia’s Megafauna has really impressed JCS students. As part of their Depth Study, Year 11 Biology students produced scale images of significant animals which lived in Australia in the Pleistocene era; approximately 14,000 years ago. Students from other year levels were invited to be photographed alongside these “Megabeasts”. To conclude their Depth Study, the biology students will use secondary sources to investigate and propose the most significant selection pressure which may have led to the extinction of the Megafauna.


New signage for JCS

Over the Term 1 holiday break JCS had new signs installed throughout the school. The Positive Behaviour For

Learning (PBL) initiative that rewards students for behaviours that show respect, responsibility and personal

best and now being reinforced with sign boards reminding students how to behave at various locations

around the school. The PBL initiative at school is well supported by students as they collect stickers or earn

cheques towards rewards and certificates that are presented and acknowledged during assemblies.

New directional signage was also installed near the front office, our school logo and PBL logo were also placed around the school along with the GYMNASIUM sign pictured right.

A new digital message board will also be installed in the near future.

Year 12 Young Driver Program

Year 12 participated in the Snowy Hydro Young Driver

Program recently that was conducted by company Driving

Solutions who enjoyed having them as part of the program.

Year 9-12 Japanese Trip Those students studying Japanese at JCS were given the opportunity to attend a 10 day trip to Japan during the school holidays with MS Campbell and Mr Eyles. The trip was planned to compliment and consolidate concepts covered in studies of Japanese.

Stage 1 working with Beebots

Students in Stage 1 have weekly computer lessons in the ICT room with Mrs Trisha Bush. Their current

program is a Digital Technologies strand that focuses on digital systems and their components. Students

investigate how digital systems display data and use a sequence of steps and decisions (algorithms) to solve

problems. This has been developing the students’ understanding of how digital systems use algorithms to

communicate.

Year 3 camp out at Sport and Rec

The annual camp period is drawing to a close and late last term Year 3 went on their first official school camp to

Jindabyne Sport and Rec Centre. Some of the activities included camp cooking, indoor rock climbing, archery and

team building games. The two day, one night camp was thoroughly enjoyed by all.


CAREERS DEPARTMENT

On Monday 27th May, 16 JCS students successfully completed the’ work safely in the construction Industry’-

WorkCover, NSW qualification previously known as the

Construction Induction card or ‘white Card.’

The course was run here at Jindabyne Central School,

organised by the careers department and delivered by Scott

Mazzucchelli – trainer for RTO Public Schools NSW Wagga

Wagga. Scott’s feedback about JCS students was extremely

positive “a fantastic engaged bunch of students’.

Students are now entitled to work and be employed on

building sites & participate in work experience in the

construction industry.

All students self-nominated for the course and expressed interest to the careers department to attend. Great

proactive students.

University of Canberra Visit JCS year 10 students and talk Future Career Aspirations Last Wednesday year 10 students were given the opportunity to participate in Aspire UC run by University of Canberra. Aspire UC is the flagship outreach initiative of the University of Canberra.

Aspire UC supports the educational aspirations of high school students. It empowers Year 10 students as they enter their senior years and begin considering options for their future. Our students participated in a in-school session and in November will be heading to the university of Canberra for a on-campus experience.

Perisher Recruit Local JCS students for Winter Employment

Interested JCS Secondary students attended an information session last Thursday in regards to recruitment tips for Perisher’s 2019 local junior employment program. Thanks to Careers Advisor, Ms Rayna Green for some valuable advice!

Primary Athletics Carnival shines at Sport and Rec

The Primary Athletics Carnival in early May was a fantastic autumn day and many students competed well. Special

mention is to be made of the assistance from the staff, P&C for the wonderful BBQ and cake stall that is always a

crowd favourite! and in particular our high school helpers who were absolutely wonderful. The qualifiers will

contest the district championships at Cooma on the 30th May. See below article about the day written by Year

PRIMARY ATHLETICS CARNIVAL REPORT By Finlay Stewart 4BY

On Tuesday the 7th of May 2019 from 9:15 till 3:15 the primary have taken to sport and rec. They have taken on events such as 100m dash, 200m dash, 800m dash, long jump, high jump and shot put. The kindergarten kids have taken on the 50m dash and activities such as sack races plus relays to learn team spirit. The high school helped out with the kindergarteners, the whole event couldn’t have happened without high school. There was a small canteen run by the P&C to keep everyone happy. The event was organised by Greg Cox, he organised it to keep people healthy and to sponsor team spirit. All of the top athletes from J.C.S (PICTURED BELOW) are going to compete against other schools such as Cooma North, Nimmitabel and Berridale in the given events. Special thanks to Greg Cox for organising, all the teachers for helping, high school for helping on the day too and Cooma Coaches for transport on the day.


Josie produces solid results as she looks towards the Youth Olympic Games Jan 2020

JCS student Josie Baff recently competed at both Canadian Nationals in opens and in juniors and at the USA

Nationals in FIS snowboard cross Events. Her first race for the year was the Canadian opens after breaking her

arm last September. She turned up with zero time on snow prior and came third in the final of the opens

managing to defeat several World Cup riders along the way and won the 15-19 Category.

She was the current Champion and the series overall winner in the final of the open event. After that she

competed at the US Opens Snowboard Cross managing a 5th place. These are solid results for Josie as she looks to

qualify for the Youth Olympic Games next January in Switzerland.


Zone Cross Country

JCS students studying Sports Coaching were proud organisers of the Eurobodalla Secondary School Zone Cross Country Carnival that was held at Jindabyne Sport and Rec Centre. The event attracted approximately 180 students from schools including Batemans Bay, Braidwood, Moruya, Bega, Narooma, Bombala and Monaro High. The event course was designed by the JCS Year 11 students who are studying their TAFE Cert II Sports Coaching at school. The students were involved in course design, liaising with community and had a significant input into the organisation and management of the event. This input resulted in a newly developed course that covered a range of terrains with increased difficulty that was well received by the participants.

"The students showed maturity and knowledge beyond their years with their involvement in the event, including input into risk assessment documents, logistics and in their role as course officials on the day," said Mr Michael Kowalewski who runs the TAFE course at JCS. The next event will be the regional cross country at Cambewarra on June 7 where a team of approximately 60 students from across all schools who competed at zone will represent the Eurobodalla Zone. Congratulations to JCS student Georgia Gardiner who will be part of this team.
