NEWSLETTER Term 1, Week 6

March 2015

Relieving Principal’s Message…..

Term 1

The academic year has certainly continued at a rapid pace with students involved in a range of curricula and extra curricula activities. I have continued my visits to classrooms and this week was privileged to attend the Year 11 Accelerated Maths Class. I must admit the mention of polynomials sent me right back to my own classroom with Ms Pedersen in 1981. The students were using Geogabra, a web based application to graph their curves and check their working. Year 10 Geography have been working on the development of their media file on issues concerning the Environment, Social Issues, politics and the world forum to name a few. Ms Mugridge and the Year 1 class have been focusing on Spiders and Mini beasts and I was impressed with their literacy learning that occurred. I have had a visit from KN to show me their writing and drawing and have attended the Stage 6 Business Studies class. I will continue to visit classes across K-12 throughout this term. A number of students are heading to Dapto tomorrow to compete in the 2015 South Coast SSA Primary Swimming Championships. We wish them every success. A number of students participated in the Triathlon recently held at Lack Crackenback as part of the 2015 Oceania Cross Triathlon Championships and Multi Sport Festival.

A number of Jindabyne Central School students will participate in the upcoming Interschool Mountain Bike Championships. Now in its 18th year, there is a thrilling line up of racing, competition and fun for school age mountain bike riders. The Interschools are a great way for riders to compete in a supportive and fun environment with a free-rolling mix of events across the weekend. The Championships will feature Downhill, Cross-Country and Dual Compressor events, plus an additional participation competition the fast and flowing Pump Track Challenge.

Parent Feedback

At all times we at Jindabyne Central School value the opinions and feedback provided to us concerning your child’s learning. Please make contact with your child’s class teacher, student adviser or Head Teacher if you have questions or concerns about homework, assignments and in class tasks. We are working to develop stronger connections between the school and the community as we recognise the value of such a partnership. have a voice in the decisions that are made that impact on your child and their school.

Visitors to School

Schools remain among the safest places for our students. Despite this, protecting our schools, staff and students is a priority for school communities. Each person in the school community has a vital role to play in ensuring the safety and security of our staff, students and school properties. It is a shared responsibility that requires the commitment of everyone in the school community to:

create a climate within the school that values safety, and

be alert to any issues that may reduce safety and security.

Accepting ownership for safety is an important step in assisting the school to improve security.

As part of our process to protect our school we have a Visitor Management Plan. Any person that enters the school MUST SIGN IN AT THE OFFICE and is required to wear a visitor’s badge.

Academic Mentor-Teacher Buddy

This year will see the implementation of an Academic Mentor Program for students in Year 11 and 12. Staff volunteers will provide one-on-one support in addition to regular support provided in class. There are many ways of assisting students who need extra help to maximise their learning outcomes. One effective way of doing this is for teachers and other adults to work with students one-to-one or in small groups in a tutoring, coaching or mentoring role.

Teachers may provide extra teaching or tutoring before or after school or at lunchtime. Mentors, tutors and coaches can be recruited from school staff or from the community and as the strategy develops we will consider the use of volunteers from our community to assist in enhancing the program.

Resilience research confirms that the presence of a caring adult in their life is important in assisting students to overcome adversity and achieve at school. Effective mentoring seeks to provide such a presence by establishing a trusting relationship between student and mentor that:

• focuses on the needs of the student • models and fosters caring and supportive relationships

to increase

self confidence, awareness and management of behaviour

positive attitudes towards assisting others

develops active community partnerships

recognises that some students may become dependent

considers other interventions that may be in place.

Date for Selective High School Test

All students who have applied to participate in the Selection High School Test to be conducted at Jindabyne Central School on 12 March 2015 should have received notification of this test. This test is conducted by the High Performing Students Unit. Please contact this Unit if you have any enquiries regarding the Selective High School Placement Test. 92445669

School Cross Country

This whole school activity will be held on 19 March 2015 along the foreshore of Lake Jindabyne. The marshalling area will be The Clay pits and students will compete in staged events throughout the day. All students will be participating in this event and encouraged to work toward their Personal Best.

Mr Kowalewski, Mrs Dixon and Ms Ashby are the Event Coordinators for 2015. We invite parents to come along and watch the event.

Positive Behaviour For Learning

Positive Behaviour for Learning is an evidence-based whole school systems process to improve learning outcomes for all students.

This week we have had a visit form Murray Walpole, Head Teacher assigned to PBL. Our team which is comprised of staff from both Primary and Secondary departments have been working with the students and community along our PBL journey for approximately 12 months. Commitment leads to whole school ownership of the process that is necessary for implementation with fidelity.

We have collaborated around our values and have agreed upon the values of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best.

Keys to success include:

forming a representative PBL team that meets at least once per month

creating, reviewing and revising the annual PBL action plan

collaborating with the entire staff to plan and implement PBL

Page 3: EDUCATING THE FUTURE - Jindabyne Central School€¦ · Triathlon Championships and Multi Sport Festival. A number of Jindabyne Central School students will participate in the upcoming

3

frequently reviewing, revising and documenting the process and saving related documents and data

clearly stating expectations of students and staff

developing and using a common vision, language and experience to support PBL implementation.

I have included a sample matrix at home that supports the philosophy of Positive Behaviour for Learning.

Student Voice, Values Education and Positive Behaviour for Learning-

Students are empowered and participate in the decision-making by being active members of the school’s PBL team. Our students will have the opportunity to support the implementation of the program, determine rewards and acknowledgments available to students and deliver peer awards and develop and present social skills lessons to students.

Our next steps will be working with the Leadership Teams in both Primary and Secondary to discuss the development of signage, behaviour expectations and a PBL Mascot.

P&C and School Council

A reminder that the AGM for the P&C is to be held on Wednesday 18 March at 7pm in the Staff Common room. A number of positions will be vacant and I encourage all parents to have a voice in your child’s learning at Jindabyne Central School.

School News

K - 2 News

Kindergarten are now quite settled into their classroom routines. We have been investigating our immediate school environment and exploring friendships, rules, rights and responsibilities. Students are focusing on the difference between making a good or bad choice. They have been working hard during all lessons and Kindergarten teachers are happy with their progress.

Stage 1 have all settled into their classrooms well and are thoroughly enjoying our investigations of minibeasts. The students are learning the importance of observation to gather information and how to draw and label diagrams appropriately. Our knowledge of interesting small creature facts is growing exponentially!

Our HSIE topic of Wet and Dry Environments integrates well with Science and we have been discussing the habitats of our minibeasts and adaptations that creatures make to live successfully in different environments.

Excursions are being planned for the end of Term 1 to Gaden Hatchery for Year 1 and the NPWS Education Centre for Kindergarten and Year 2. Notes will be coming home soon.

The Easter Hat Parade will take place on Wednesday 1st April (Week 10) this term and not the last day.

Thank you to all those parents who are helping out both in the classrooms and in many other capacities.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

The challenge has started again for this year!! It would be great to have all students complete the challenge and receive their certificates at the Awards Days at the end of the year. Only students with a validated Student Reading Record are eligible for a certificate. The competition doesn’t close until 21st August but as winter is such a busy time for our community we are striving to complete the challenge well before the closing date. Teachers and students will make a list of the books read at school so they can be easily logged on at home.

Secondary Swimming Carnival

On Friday the 6th of February the Secondary Students travelled to Berridale Pool for the annual Secondary Swimming Carnival. It was a glorious sunny day, perfect conditions for this event. It was excellent to see so many students proudly wearing their House colours and cheering on their friends that were competing. Congratulations to all the students who participated on the day, either swimming competitively or for fun with their friends; all earned points for their House.

Zone Swimming Carnival

On Wednesday 18th of February students from JCS travelled to Narooma to compete at the Zone Swimming Carnival. We achieved some excellent results with six students progressing to the next level. Congratulations to Josie Baff for being awarded the 12 Years Zone Age Champion.

The Regional Swimming Carnival will be held in Dapto on the 5th of March where our students will represent the Eurobodalla Zone. Congratulations to all of the students who competed on the day and represented our school with pride.

Recorder Group 2015

Recorder Group will be held on Fridays at 8:30am in Mrs Dixon’s room, beginning this Friday March 13th, 2015. Beginner and experienced students from Years 3-6 are invited to join. Students must bring their own recorder and A4 display book. Recorder Group is a free activity, but there are some costs involved if your child is selected to perform at the Opera House.

Jindabyne Central School has been offered 30 positions for recorder players to perform in the Mimosa concert, at

the NSW Department of Education Instrumental Festival, which will be held at the Sydney Opera House on Thursday August 6th, 2015.

This year the JCS String Ensemble will perform on Wednesday August 5th, 2015, making it possible for students to perform with both the Recorder Group and String Ensemble, on consecutive nights. This is a special chance to perform at Australia’s premier performance venue, and for many students, a once in a lifetime opportunity.

There will be a rehearsal during the day of Thursday August 6th, 2015 and the concert will be held that evening, therefore two nights’ accommodation may be required. Parents are required to organise travel and accommodation for themselves and their children.

Students who regularly attend Recorder Group rehearsals and show improvement in their musicianship will be invited to perform at the Opera House.
