The Second Anthropological Film Festival 27-29.11.2012The Second Anthropological Film Festival will be held in November 2012. A collaborative project of the Jerusalem Film Center and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, initiated by Ada Ushpiz and Nurit Kedar, the Festival promotes documentary filmmaking with an ethnographic orientation and charts the complexities and unique expressions of individuals and communities in society, culture, and politics. The Festival explores a variety of subjects: children around the world, whose playgrounds and imaginative and conscious spaces are ensnared in the icy plains of northern Russia, a childrens playground in the Scottish woods, at the boxing center on the Burma-Thailand border, and elsewhere. We will wander through the vulnerable worlds of elderly women in North America and southern China. We will examine the way of life of a group of vagabonds with different gender rules in Niger, and families in Peru, Transylvania Russia and India. When does humanity forcibly emerge? How fragile is the family and how desperate is its hold in the modern age of social desolation, accelerating capitalism, and colonial fallout? These films offer us a rare insight into the world of the Other. The screenings will be accompanied by discussions, Q&A sessions, and professional panels with academics. Konrad Wolf RetrospectiveOffice of theInstitute, in cooperation with the IsraelThe Goethe ,Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and the Cinematheques in Tel Aviv Jerusalem and Haifa, will screen seven movies by the famous East .German film director Konrad Wolf who passed away 30 years ago Konrad Wolf was born in 1925 in the small town Hechingen in South Germany as son of the Jewish author and physician Friedrich Wolf. When the Nazis took power, the family left Germany for France and went later to Moscow, where Konrad Wolf received Soviet citizenship and got interested in Soviet films. Already at the age (Fighters) by theof 10 he played a minor role in the movie Borzy .German emigrant Gustav von Wangenheim At age 17, Konrad Wolf joined the Red Army. Shortly after the war, he .studied at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in Moscow In 1954 Wolf returned to the GDR and became film director at DEFA Babelsberg. He was appointed the president of thein Potsdam .5691 Academy of Arts of the GDR in Producing ambitious and contemporary critical films, Wolf became quickly well known within and outside of East Germany. His films Russian focus on German responsibility for the Holocaust, German relations and current social problems in his country, including the impact of political authorities on art. The Return of the Violin (Israel )2102 Dir.: Haim Hecht | When Joseph Goebbels ordered to expel all Jewish musicians from German symphonies, gifted violinist Bronislaw Huberman played a major role in the international cultural war against German symphonies that collaborated with the Nazi regime. Instead of emigrating to the United States, Huberman decided to establish the Israeli Symphony in Eretz Israel, which went on to become the Israeli Philharmonic. Those selected by Huberman to join the symphony were granted exit permits from Nazi Germany along with their .)families (about 800 people Hubermans Stradivarius violin was stolen during a fundraising concert in Carnegie Hall. About fifty years later, a prisoner named Julian Altman confessed that he stole the violin and sold it for one million dollars to Norbert Brainin, the first violinist of the Amadeus String Quartet. Leoncavallos father was a judge who had to deliver a sentence upon a case of a theater director who killed his wife and her lover during the staging of a live play. The story takes place over the course of a few hours in an Italian village. The clown theater arrives in town. Tonio, the clown, actively pursues Nedda, the wife of Canio, the theater director, but she rejects him. Her hearts belongs to another actor, Silvio. Tonio then tells the jealous Canio about the supposed affair. From here, matters progress quickly. In the second act, right in front of the audience, Canio reenacts the dramatic text in which he plays a jealous husband. He removes his mask and attacks his wife with a dagger. The dagger falls sharply on Neddas stomach and she loses consciousness. Silvio runs to her side and the dagger stabs his body. Tonio, who is the mind behind this death play, informs the audience that La commedia e finite. Two bodies, a murderer, the police, a screen.
