2014 has so far been full of drama for us, but only in the positive sense! It’s been fantastic to have two pieces of first-class theatre scheduled in one year and for them to be so well-received by audiences; in recent years drama has become a notoriously hard sell.

Dracula was the first live play to grace the stage this year, but without doubt, the big coup for us has to be Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap which is coming here as part of its 60th anniversary tour. For one week only, the world’s longest running play will be showing live on our stage. It’s considered the greatest murder mystery of all time and we’re honoured to be one of the venues selected for its tour.

Theatre aside and, as ever, we have a wide variety of shows lined up from May to September including comedians Russell Kane, Rich Hall and witty observationist Pam Ayres, not to mention the legendary Madness frontman, Suggs, with his own one-man show. We have live

A DRAMATIC 2014

music from Courtney Pine, Nerina Pallot, and tribute acts The Simon & Garfunkel Story, The Elvis Years and OASIS UK. Dance lovers can enjoy the world-class Tap Factory and Strictly Come Dancing stars Pasha and Katya. Plus we continue with our National Theatre Live and Royal Shakespeare Company screenings, and there’s an exclusive screening of Andre Rieu’s 10th Anniversary Concert.

In other JOH news, we’ve received recognition from the National Theatre for our marketing, we’re looking for new members to join our Friends Club and we’re appealing for more stewards to add to our existing volunteers. There’s a lot going on so come and play your part!

Our children’s drama classes - the Dragons and the Chameleons - are once again fully-subscribed for the summer term! This May marks the start of our classes for 11-13 year olds - the Komodo Dragons. Sessions will be on Thursday evenings and ten classes cost £85. Book a place by contacting [email protected]

We would like to thank local charitable organisation, the De Lancey and De La Hanty Foundation, for safeguarding the future of our Steinway. The foundation, which supports and offers funding to the fields of medicine, law, education and culture, has kindly granted a total of £10,175 to refurbish the piano, so its much-needed repair works can be undertaken this year.

Dining at OH! Cafébar on show nights allows you to relax while the drama unfolds around you. You don’t need to worry about missing the start of the performance because you’re still finishing your meal around the corner. Instead, you can enjoy a more leisurely in-house dining experience, with pre-show suppers prepared by our award-winning chef from as little as £14.50 for two courses.OH! Cafébar Tel: (01534) 511 106

Walking into OH! Cafébar each month is a totally new experience; there’s always something different to see thanks to local artists and photographers showcasing their work on the walls. Once again we’re booked up for the next few months but we’re looking for exhibitors for the latter part of the year. Interested? Then contact [email protected]

part II

Behold the first part of this two part exploration of Shakespeare’s historical play; a comic and thrilling production by the RSC that tells the story of a nation in turmoil.

With his crown under threat from both foreign and domestic enemies, Henry IV prepares for war. Having deposed the previous king, he is only too aware of the tenuousness of his position and the price to be paid if he falters.

While his father prepares to defend his crown, Prince Hal is languishing in London’s taverns and brothels with his friend, the notorious Sir John Falstaff. With the onset of war, they are thrust onto the battlefield, where Hal must confront his responsibilities to family and throne.

Jasper Britton takes the title role with Antony Sher as the comic knight, Falstaff, and Alex Hassell as Prince Hal.www.rsc.org.uk

Tickets £26.50Performance Time 8pm

I’ve just turned 50, the kids have left home, and my cat just died.

In Suggs: My Life Story, the Madness frontman takes to the stage in a hilarious, yet moving, one man tour de force playing to rave reviews.

The death of Suggs’ beloved cat on his 50th birthday triggers a personal quest to discover what happened to the father he never knew. Stunned by what he learns, Suggs is taken back to his childhood on the tough streets of 1970’s Soho and his first appearance on Top Of The Pops at the age of eighteen...

Is it a play? Is it stand-up comedy? Is it Music Hall? Whatever it is, hold on to your seats as Suggs goes on to stumble and plummet through the trap door of failure, then trampoline back up to catch the passing trapeze of show business success!

Revealed by his younger brother Despard and his foster brother, Dick Dauntless, he is soon visited, in a wonderfully dramatic scene, by his ancestors as they step down from their portraits in his Picture Gallery. “Ruddigore” is not one of the best known Savoy Operas, but is filled with Gilbert’s wit and humour and

graced by what many consider to be Sullivan’s finest score. With a large well-costumed chorus of professional bridesmaids, ancestors and “Bucks and Blades”, together with a splendid cast of principals, supported by a full orchestra, “Ruddigore” will prove a most entertaining evening.

Pam Ayres brings her latest show to Jersey Opera House following the recent publication of her new book of poetry, YOU MADE ME LATE AGAIN!

Pam Ayres’ work is funny and approachable. It sounds simple, as though dashed off, but this is deceptive. Her hair-trigger timing, her eye for the detail of everyday life, and for the absurdity therein, make for an art that hides art.

Pam has sold millions of books, CDs and DVDs over the years, and she is still a regular on both TV and radio on programmes including Just A Minute, Ayres On The Air, QI, Countdown, and The One Show.

AN EVENING WITH STARS FROM STRICTLY COME DANCING

Back by popular demand, this dynamic dancing duo is returning to Jersey Opera House with a brand new show!

Professional Dancer Pasha Kovalev reached the final in the 2012 BBC series of Strictly Come Dancing and danced with Countdown’s Rachel Riley in the 2013 series.

Following sell-out shows at Jersey Opera House last year, he and his professional partner, Katya Virshilas, are bringing a much larger production to the island this summer.

The show will feature the couple, accompanied by four guest dancers, all performing new routines in stunning glitzy costumes. Once again the show will include the ever-popular Q & A session, plus appearances by two local dance schools.

Not content with all that? The show will also offer another opportunity for audience participation with dancing on stage! This is the ultimate show for any ‘Strictly’ fan!

Following its smash-hit live broadcast in 2012, the National Theatre’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time returns to Jersey Opera House’s big screen.

Based on Mark Haddon’s acclaimed novel, which was adapted for stage by Simon Stephens and directed by Marianne Elliott, this production won seven Olivier Awards in 2013, including Best New Play, and was hailed by The Times as ‘a phenomenal combination of storytelling and spectacle.’

15 year old Christopher has an extraordinary brain – exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. When he falls under suspicion for killing his next door neighbour’s dog, Wellington, he sets about recording each fact about the pet’s murder in order to solve the mystery.

However, his detective work, which has been forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.www.ntlive.com

Fresh from sell-out shows across the US, Canada and Europe, headline slots at Bestival, Love Supreme and Greenbelt in the UK, and UNESCO’s globally televised International Jazz Day concert in Japan, with Herbie Hancock and other legendary artists, Courtney is back touring his critically acclaimed House of Legends set.

This, his 15th studio album, sees the UK born artist return to the instrument for which he is known best - the saxophone - and features his soprano sax exclusively for the first time.
