DRAMAtIC NEw YEAR RESOlUtIONSAs another busy year comes to an end, we already find ourselves scheduling the programme for 2014! Far from wishing 2013 away though, we have plenty of fantastic shows lined up from now until this coming May. Highlights include the return of The Circus of Horrors with a brand new show The Curse, an evening with Chris Packham, comedians Patrick Monahan and Julian Clary, and the Shaolin Warriors.

With the studio now very much a part of our operations, we also have a number of small-scale performances planned this season including the monthly Plays Rough readings, Steve Larkin’s confrontational one-man show N.O.N.C.E. and the award-winning Tin Rocket starring Niki McCretton. La Motte Street Youth Service is also holding regular band nights in the space, recognising the studio as a great gigging venue in the island.

The new studio has come alive on Saturday mornings during term-time as the venue for our new children’s drama classes. The inaugural sessions have been a great success with both age groups (the Dragons aged 5 to 7 and the Chameleons aged 8 to 10) well-subscribed.

We set local primary schools the challenge of designing logos for the respective classes and we received some very noteworthy entries. After great deliberation we chose 8 year old Ellie-Mai Longdin’s chameleon design and 7 year old Melanie Dixon’s dragon logo as the new brand identities for the classes.

Our next term begins in January and classes are already booking up fast so if you want to secure your child’s place please email [email protected] Kindly supported by HSBC.

Plays Rough is back for 2013! Brand new theatre in Jersey now has a regular showcase in the rugged (yet comely) shape of Plays Rough. This is a monthly night in the JOH Studio, presenting new writing in a loose and informal style and often as performed readings. No set, no costume, no problem. It’s all about the plays. Into the mix of each evening’s theatre, Plays Rough adds comedy, original poetry, and live music from the best of Jersey’s songwriters – making for a great way to sample the rest of the island’s creative talent.

For the audience, it’s a chance to see theatre in the making and even be part of the creative process. Your opinions and reactions are what it’s all about. The acclaimed Dream, from world-renowned choreographer Christopher Bruce, is a breath-taking celebration of the excellence and achievement of Britain in its Olympic year. Dream has received standing ovations from London to Shanghai as audiences are swept away by the sheer exuberance of physical movement.

Exploring the fantasy and ritual of weddings, Noces by French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj is an astonishing spectacle of dynamic movement and evocative costumes performed to Igor Stravinsky’s exquisite score, Les Noces.

Award-winning Company dancer and House Choreographer Eleesha Drennan presents her latest work with a recording of a newly commissioned percussion concerto from BBC National Orchestra of Wales’ resident composer Mark Bowden.

Niki’s quest to make sense of it all has taken her to Russia to try on space suits, to the USA to interview a man who’s eaten spaghetti on the moon, and to Northern Ireland to see how her ancestors managed to go from obsessing about potatoes to running a Speak-Easy in the Bronx. You’ll find us in Gloucester Street in St Helier, opposite the General Hospital. We’re a 5 minute walk from the main town shopping area and the bus terminus, Liberation Station.

By Car…

Patriotic Street and Sand Street car parks are both 150 metres from the theatre. Parking is free from 5pm to 8am.

By Bus…

Buses coming from the west will bypass Gloucester Street. The closest stop to the theatre is on the Esplanade and about a 200 metre walk. Other routes will stop at Liberation Station which is a 5 minute walk or taxis are available at the terminus.
