DRAMAtIC NEw YEAR RESOlUtIONSAs another busy year comes to an end, we already find ourselves scheduling the programme for 2014! Far from wishing 2013 away though, we have plenty of fantastic shows lined up from now until this coming May. Highlights include the return of The Circus of Horrors with a brand new show The Curse, an evening with Chris Packham, comedians Patrick Monahan and Julian Clary, and the Shaolin Warriors.

With the studio now very much a part of our operations, we also have a number of small-scale performances planned this season including the monthly Plays Rough readings, Steve Larkin’s confrontational one-man show N.O.N.C.E. and the award-winning Tin Rocket starring Niki McCretton. La Motte Street Youth Service is also holding regular band nights in the space, recognising the studio as a great gigging venue in the island.

We are constantly adding new shows to the season’s programme for both the studio and the main theatre so, to be the first ‘in the know’, follow us on facebook and twitter and sign up to our newsletter on our website www.jerseyoperahouse.co.uk Every month you will get up-to-date information about shows and competitions plus what’s on offer at OH! Cafébar. This year our eatery has really taken off, now regularly packed at lunchtimes and booked up on show nights. With set menus from £14.95

for two courses it makes sense to grab a bite before curtain up. You won’t be pushed for time or disappointed with the tasty food and friendly service.

10% discount at OH! Cafebar is just one of the many member benefits when you become a Friend of Jersey Opera House. Why not make a commitment to your theatre in 2013 as one of your New Year resolutions? Forget the abstinence and all those promises to get fit. Pledging your support to the local arts couldn’t be easier or more satisfying – and there’s no way you can break this resolution! To find out more about our memberships visit: www.jerseyoperahouse.co.uk/support/friends

We hope to welcome you here in 2013!

DESIgNS ON DRAMA

wAll tO wAll ARt

The new studio has come alive on Saturday mornings during term-time as the venue for our new children’s drama classes. The inaugural sessions have been a great success with both age groups (the Dragons aged 5 to 7 and the Chameleons aged 8 to 10) well-subscribed.

We set local primary schools the challenge of designing logos for the respective classes and we received some very noteworthy entries. After great deliberation we chose 8 year old Ellie-Mai Longdin’s chameleon design and 7 year old Melanie Dixon’s dragon logo as the new brand identities for the classes.

Our next term begins in January and classes are already booking up fast so if you want to secure your child’s place please email [email protected] Kindly supported by HSBC.

Local artists and photographers have been taking full advantage of the gallery space on the walls of OH! Cafébar. The monthly exhibitions for this season are all booked up with the following showcasing their work:

Kevin Brace (7th Dec – 10th Jan) Tracy Peters (11th Jan – 14th Feb)Penny Best (15th Feb – 21st Mar)Kim Jordan (22nd Mar – 25th Apr)Debbie Buterbaugh (26th Apr – 30th May)Richard Close (31st May – 4th July)

If you are interested in exhibiting your work at OH! Cafébar please contact [email protected]

A fast and furious farce, The Magistrate is sure to have audiences doubled up with laughter.

Academy Award nominee and Tony Award-winner John Lithgow ((Broadway’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Shrek, 3rd Rock from the Sun) takes the title role in Arthur Wing Pinero’s uproarious Victorian farce, with Olivier Award-winner Nancy Carroll (After the Dance) as his deceitful wife.

When amiable Magistrate Posket marries Agatha little does he realise that she’s dropped five years from her age – and her son’s. When her deception looks set to be revealed, it sparks a series of hilarious indignities and outrageous mishaps.

HEY DIDDlE DIDDlEThere’s an air of excitement in Rhyme Town – the secret place where nursery rhyme characters live when they’re not busy with bedtime stories.

It’s the annual Jumping Over The Moon contest; an event which The Cow has won for the past five years. However, this year, Little Miss Muffet has made a trampoline from Incy Wincy Spider’s web, and is certain she’s going to get the trophy.

Wee Willie Winkie is up to his old tricks and has scared the two

judges of the contest – The Dish and The Spoon – so they’ve run away! Without anyone to judge the jump, the contest will have to be cancelled.

To save the event, the nursery’s two delightful puppet characters, Jenny and Davey, come to life and visit Old King Cole to borrow his Big Book Of Rhyme. After a game

of Hide & Seek, they set off around Rhyme Town to find The Dish and

The Spoon.

Hey Diddle Diddle is a magical show full of songs,

laughter and audience participation – ideal for children

of all ages!

Plays Rough is back for 2013! Brand new theatre in Jersey now has a regular showcase in the rugged (yet comely) shape of Plays Rough. This is a monthly night in the JOH Studio, presenting new writing in a loose and informal style and often as performed readings. No set, no costume, no problem. It’s all about the plays. Into the mix of each evening’s theatre, Plays Rough adds comedy, original poetry, and live music from the best of Jersey’s songwriters – making for a great way to sample the rest of the island’s creative talent.

For the audience, it’s a chance to see theatre in the making and even be part of the creative process. Your opinions and reactions are what it’s all about. For the writers, it’s an important forum for new work to be presented to the people who matter most – you! So why not come along and Play Rough?

A new play by Alan Bennett

People spoil things; there are so many of them and the last thing one wants is them traipsing through one’s house. But with the park a jungle and a bath on the billiard table, what is one to do?

Dorothy, played by award-winning actress Frances de la Tour (star of Harry Potter, Rising Damp), wonders if an attic sale could be a solution.

Award-winning British playwright Alan Bennett is reunited with Director Nicholas Hytner and Olivier Award-winning actress Frances de la Tour for the much anticipated People, the sixth of Bennett’s plays to have its premiere at the National Theatre.

The acclaimed Dream, from world-renowned choreographer Christopher Bruce, is a breath-taking celebration of the excellence and achievement of Britain in its Olympic year. Dream has received standing ovations from London to Shanghai as audiences are swept away by the sheer exuberance of physical movement.

Exploring the fantasy and ritual of weddings, Noces by French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj is an astonishing spectacle of dynamic movement and evocative costumes performed to Igor Stravinsky’s exquisite score, Les Noces.

Award-winning Company dancer and House Choreographer Eleesha Drennan presents her latest work with a recording of a newly commissioned percussion concerto from BBC National Orchestra of Wales’ resident composer Mark Bowden.

makin projects proudly presents Award-Winning performer Niki McCretton in an evening of comedy, stand-up, space travel and scones.

‘What planet are you on?’ a phrase Niki’s well used to hearing. If you’ve ever felt like you don’t fit in or that The Matrix feels more like a documentary than a work of fiction, then maybe you are on the same planet as her.

Niki’s quest to make sense of it all has taken her to Russia to try on space suits, to the USA to interview a man who’s eaten spaghetti on the moon, and to Northern Ireland to see how her ancestors managed to go from obsessing about potatoes to running a Speak-Easy in the Bronx. She’s met royalty and strangely Prince Charles thinks she’s very funny.

Should she worry?Come and find out.

CHRIS PACkHAMwIlD NIgHt OUt!

Chris Packham goes wild across the country with an entertaining and informative look at some of nature’s most popular and interesting species.

Illustrated with his superb photographs from around the world and from his beloved UK, he explains the fascinating ecologies and behaviours of a range of creatures from leopards to barn owls, cheetahs to pond skaters, polar bears to peregrines.

His conversational style, irreverent humour and sometimes controversial opinions make for a hugely rewarding evening’s entertainment. He tells of close shaves and the often bizarre

lengths he’ll go to get the picture, plus he challenges people to think again about the conventions of conservation.

Suitable for 8 to 80 year olds, there is always time for questions at the end... that’s as long as you don’t mind a candid or frank answer and there is sure to be a couple of poodles in there somewhere!

HANDEl’SgIUlIO CESAREThE MET OpEra: LIVE IN hDENCOrE SCrEENING

The opera which conquered London in Handel’s time comes to the Met Opera in David McVicar’s inventive production.

The Guardian praised the director’s “witty, sexy, and tragic post-colonial framing of the classic Caesar and Cleopatra tale,” which incorporates elements of Baroque theatre and 19th Century British imperialism to illuminate the opera’s ideas of love, war and empire-building.

The world’s leading countertenor, David Daniels, sings the title role opposite Natalie Dessay as an irresistibly exotic Cleopatra. Baroque specialist Harry Bicket conducts.
