Jeffersonian Democracy• Jefferson took the oath of office in his everyday clothes at

a very subdued ceremony• He outlined his goals for his presidency

• Smaller and weaker Government• Power to the “Common man”• Focus on farming economy (away from industry)

Louisiana Purchase• Jefferson asked to buy New Orleans from France,

Napoleon offered all of Louisiana • Jefferson was conflicted:

• Wanted the land• Not given permission in Constitution to buy any land

• Jefferson decided to purchase Louisiana even though it was not power given in Constitution• Doubled the size of the country

Lewis and Clark Expedition• Jefferson asked Lewis and Clark to explore the new

territory• Goals:

• Find Northwest Passage to Pacific Ocean (Used rivers to get West) • Take inventory of the land purchased (create maps, plant life, etc.) • Establish relationship with Western Indians (Sacagawea)

• She helped Lewis and Clark navigate and interact with Native American tribes
