Wisdom for Today Rabbi Josh Snyder

Summer in the Wilderness What is it about summertime that makes it so different, so precious? Is it the air that feels palpable, warm and humid with possibility? Is it the sound of ice cream trucks trolling the streets for eager children, ringing out their familiar tunes? Is it the longed-for chance to go somewhere else, or even explore the

outdoor places that are revealed in our backyards? Of course, it is all this and more. The rhythm of time seems to slow as the sunlight lasts well into the evening. Whether we are at camp, relaxing on the beach, or even stepping out to get the mail, the summer brings a greater awareness of the world around us. Summer encourages our full encounter with nature. In the Jewish calendar, summer is an intermediate time. From Shavuot, which falls on June 8-9 this year, until Tisha B’Av, which falls on August 9, there is a period of two months without any major Jewish holiday. It’s appropriate that during this period we read from the book of BaMidbar, which is known in English as Numbers, but really means ‘In The Wilderness’. The book tells the stories from the wild and woolly period between the giving of the Torah at Sinai and the arrival at the edge of the Promised Land, spanning a period of 38 years. It is in the wilderness that Israel finally forges a national identity. The words of the prophet Jeremiah echo across the centuries, “Thus said the Lord: The people [who] escaped from the sword found favor in the wilderness” (31:2). When the Israelites left their comfort zone, and entered into the wilderness, they were able to find out who they really were. I do not think it is a coincidence that we read from BaMidbar in the summer. Particularly now, we find ourselves able to take advantage of the offerings of the great outdoors. So go for that hike in the woods; go see a baseball game; head to the beach; take that great class at the J. Each opportunity for recreation is truly an opportunity for re-creation. Our experiences in the wilderness remind us who we are and who we can become.

Teens

Teens Blog About March of the Living Trip Thousands of Jewish teens worldwide participated in this international, educational experience this spring. The teens were in Poland and Israel on very special days, including Yom Hashoah, Yom Hazikaron, and Yom Ha’Atzmaut. Three of our Baltimore teens share excerpts from their incredible journeys:

Departure DayIts 8:00am on the morning of our departure, I can’t put into words how excited I am! To embark on this journey with my best friends is something I couldn’t even imagine months ago. My bags are packed, and my four hours of sleep will have to last me as long as possible! This has been a long

time coming, and I feel mentally prepared for the next two weeks. ~ Josh

Day One - PolandWhen would I have thought that I would be in Poland? It’s not much of a vacation spot, nor is it much of a tourist attraction. But once you arrive- there’s so much to do. Fresh off the plane, Treblinka was certainly a wake up call. There is nothing left of the camp except for memorials. I walked through rows and rows of rocks, observing all the different town names. In only two days we have visited a death camp, toured the ghetto in Warsaw, experienced Polish food and met people from all over the world. – Maddie

At One Point, They Were Alive… The Warsaw cemetery brought up mixed feelings. Interestingly enough, I did not feel the sadness I had anticipated. Perhaps it was the beautiful weather, but I found the overall atmosphere to be peaceful. If the cemetery could talk, what would it have said? I asked one of my friends if they too did not feel the sadness we had all anticipated. I won’t soon forget the response I got: “Cemeteries are not here to remind us that all of these people are dead, but to remind us that at one point, they were alive.”– Caitlin (seen here in the Warsaw cemetery helping to clean up the area)

Aquatics

Meet the Teacher: Misti Myers Misti’s current claim to fame is teaching the Arthritis Foundation’s Aquatics Program at the Weinberg PH JCC. She also teaches land-based group fitness classes and is a personal trainer.

Q. What are some benefits of doing a workout in the water as opposed to land? A. The natural resistance of the water protects the body from the wear and tear on the joints that we experience on land in our everyday activities.

Q. Who should consider coming to these Aqua Aerobics/Arthritis classes?A. Working out in the water can benefit anyone- with or without physical ailments.

Q. Why is it so important for older adults to keep active? A. Staying active is important for maintaining overall strength, balance, flexibility, weight control and more. Regular exercise will keep mind, body and spirit connected.

Q. What is your favorite thing about your job at the JCC? A. My work is meaningful! The time I spend teaching class and training clients doesn’t feel like work at all, they are all very special to me. I feel very lucky to be a part of the JCC team.

Participants Are Talking …“I love everything about this class, starting with the teacher! – Libby

THE ASSOCIATED is Going Green (er)The grass is not the only thing turning green this spring. THE ASSOCIATED: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore and its network of agencies are getting greener, too! Thanks to the generous grants of The Jacob and Hilda Blaustein Fund of THE ASSOCIATED, The Charles Crane Family Foundation and The Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Awards Committee, THE ASSOCIATED hired Aleeza Oshry last October to serve as the system’s “Green Coordinator.” Oshry works out of the Pearlstone Conference & Retreat Center, where “green” is a big part of the mission, but serves as a liaison to all ASSOCIATED programs and agencies, as well as to area synagogues and other Jewish projects. “I see my role as a part of THE ASSOCIATED’s larger mission,” she said. “THE ASSOCIATED is about creating a stable, strong and vibrant Jewish Baltimore. A sustainable Jewish Baltimore is an important part of that picture.”Oshry networks with area organizations that focus on green living, attends events in the arena and works to put Jewish Baltimore’s name on the sustainability map. Oshry also coordinated the recent “See the Green @ CHAI” event which was co-sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council and highlighted the new LEED silver certified CHAI building. For more information about See the Green, visit http://usgbcmd.org.Oshry’s position comes in the backdrop of several other initiatives THE ASSOCIATED has taken to sustain a clean and healthy Baltimore, efforts also inspired by the involvement of the Baltimore Jewish Environmental Network, which was founded by Rabbi Nina Beth Cardin and is also based at Pearlstone. About two years ago, THE ASSOCIATED received a stipend from the Marty and Dorothy Silverman Foundation to launch The Green Loan Fund, which provides a revolving $100,000 line of credit, of which a portion can be borrowed by any Jewish organization to carry out a greening project at its facility. In 2008, THE ASSOCIATED was awarded “The Green Nonprofit of the Year” by The Baltimore Business Journal for its implementation of environmentally sound practices. The award came following the launch of a green task force to explore and promote environmental preservation throughout THE ASSOCIATED system. The task force led to innovative green initiatives in the Krieger Building and throughout the system. To learn about THE ASSOCIATED’s greening efforts, visit www.associated.org/sustainability.
