PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE By Mike Jones
Hot, Hot, Hot! You may think I’m referring to the weather.
Of course the weather is hot, but I’m actually thinking about our 2015 trip schedule. We have some great destinations planned for this coming ski season, East and West. If you haven’t already done so, please check out our website. I’m confident we have a trip to suit every need!
I went to the Dundalk Heritage Fair which is always fun and entertaining. The main acts were Heart By Heart (a Heart tribute band with two of the original members), Night Ranger (this concert took me back a few years), and Travis Tritt. A Steely Dan and a Fleetwood Mac tribute band also performed this year. For the 4
th of July I drove my church’s float in the
Dundalk parade. That was like navigating a black diamond, but without the snow!
I haven’t been to the beach yet this year but, shortly I’m heading to Pennsylvania for a mini-vacation. I plan to tour the UTZ factory. I hear that it is fabulous. Then I’m going to Strasburg for a ride on the rails. I expect that to be fun, but nothing like a ride on the slopes.
How have you been spending your non-ski seasons? If you’re looking for something to do, check out the summer ac-tivities that we have planned for the BSC. They are adver-tised on the website. You will also be receiving constant con-tacts with reminders about the events. And, we are always looking for more activities. Give Christopher a call at (410) 292-6656 and let him know that you would like to lead a sum-mer activity. It is easy. Just invite the club to an event that you are already planning to attend. It’s like calling up your friends and saying “come with me”. Don’t forget the Annapo-lis Summer Theater. We are going August 1 to see Spamalot. Call Art at (410) 923-7400 for your tickets. I will be there. We have dinner beforehand and then ice cream cones afterwards.
Don’t forget our final summer informal meeting at Padonia Ale House in August. Then we will, once again, be back at Lutheran Divinity Church for our general meeting in Septem-ber.
In the meantime, does anyone have directions to the North Pole? Mike

Trip Recap: February 15-22, 2014
A group of 47 Ski Club trip participants’ spent a great week of skiing in Telluride, Colorado. We de-parted on Saturday morning, February 15 from four airports and rendezvoused in Atlanta for our flight to Montrose, CO. One couple drove up from Arizona to join the trip. We were fortunate to have late morning flights from our originating airports.
We stayed at the quaint Victorian Inn in the town of Telluride, just a short walk to the gondola. The Inn also provided us with a hearty continental breakfast every morning and we had three wonderful group dinners on Sunday, Tuesday, and Friday.
A Mexican dinner was held at Esperanza’s Tequilas Restaurant on Sunday; on Tuesday we had a pizza party at the Crazy Elk Pizza with our own private dining area and bar. The staff kept the vari-ety of pizzas and beautifully displayed salad and breadsticks flowing. Friday, was our farewell din-ner at the Cornerhouse Grille, where we had the whole restaurant and bar to ourselves making so-cializing easy. We enjoyed wings and could order off their menu. All restaurants were within a short walking distance from the Victorian Inn, except for the Crazy Elk Pizza, which was located in the Mountain Village. It was fun to take the gondola over there and see the Mountain Village in daylight and the Town of Telluride at night.
The skiing . . . Skiing at Telluride was great and offered us sunny days, endless well-groomed piste trails for all levels, and glades (which Telluride is famous for!) and there was enough snow one day to enjoy powder skiing providing challenging skiing for the most adventurous and advanced skiers. Moguls were soft and fun for the serious mogul hounds. Many of us couldn’t get enough skiing and pur-chased the 6th day lift pass, while others used their free day to tour the town of Telluride to sight-see and stimulate the economy!
It was also an exciting time to be in Telluride during the Sochi Winter Olympics as hometown hero Gus Kenworthy, won the silver medal in the Men's freestyle skiing for slopestyle and halfpipe. Gus also made headlines for pledging to adopt and bring home a family of stray dogs.
Many of the group took the mountain tour on the first and second day of skiing; and learned that it was as much a history les-son as it was a mountain tour. Telluride was originally named "Columbia", but due to confusion with Columbia, California, the post office renamed the town to 'Telluride’, which is derived from the mineral tellurium.
On our return trip home we passed Ralph Lauren’s 17,000-acre Double RL ranch, with its miles of teak fence just outside Tel-luride, where American designer Ralph
Lauren and his family vacation.
We would like to welcome several new members who joined the Telluride trip and hope they will join the Baltimore Ski Club on a trip again in 2015. LuAnn Snyder, Assistant Trip Leader

SUGARLOAF, ME March 2-7, 2014
When I was asked to write up the Sugarloaf trip for Schuss, two things came to mind immedi-ately: 17 degrees and awesome outdoor hot tub.
Yes, it was cold, but most of us went out every day anyway. If you’ve never been there, you wouldn’t know that Sugarloaf has some of the best grooming on the East Coast. Even though we didn’t get any snow while we were there, the snow we had was soft from being freshly groomed every night.
And the hot tub was quite a party! Yes, we had to run about 15 feet through the cold to get there, but it was well worth it. Many of us hung out there after skiing or boarding, some (of course!) with drinks in their hands. As it was on the cooler side (about 101 degrees), you could stay in for an hour without getting too hot, espe-cially with the breeze making icicles in your hair.
And let’s not forget the awesome food! Every day started out with a breakfast buffet, with made-to-order omelets. For our “pizza party,” we didn’t have boxes of Domino’s pizza in the group leader’s room. We had a whole buffet of food, including pizza, salad, soup and dessert. This was at the Sugarloaf Inn, just down the road from our hotel. We also had a fabulous buffet dinner there on Thursday night, with New England clam chowder, salmon, tenderloin tips, chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, and dessert.
I know that some of you are prejudiced against bus trips (ahem, I was just on the Lake Tahoe trip
with you), but I have to say that the bus rides up and back can be quite pleasant when you have
pleasant companions, movies and bloody Marys starting at 9 am! And I got up an hour later for
the bus trip than I did to get on the plane to Tahoe. So, I hope to see more of you on the bus next

ANATOMY of A SKI TRIP
Ahhhh, Memorial Day the official start of summer. Sitting on the beach watching the waves roll in with your favorite beverage. Not really thinking about skiing, maybe just a passing thought or two. Well, your trips committee is already hard at work on the coming season’s line up. Matter of fact planning for the coming year started long before the current season ended.
By early summer many destinations have already blocked out prime weeks for lodging and in some cases air fares have been posted. Your trips committee reviews all the preference surveys, past history and trip evaluations to determine where members wish to ski each season. We also shop for the best deals and bargain destinations for the coming year. With all this information considered, we then formalize a tentative trip schedule and submit to our wholesalers for competitive bids. The tentative schedule is then submitted to the Executive Council for final approval.
Many factors, such as price, lodging, flight times, are considered when rewarding a bid. We always look for the best possible value for our trip participants which will provide a great winter experience. The club then sends in the initial deposit to the wholesaler to secure the contract terms long before any participant has signed up. All wholesaler contracts have cancellation penalties, attrition penalties and fees imposed on them by the lodging properties and airlines. Most, but not all, begin at 180 days prior to departure. What’s a non-recoverable fee? Any charge for which the club can’t get reimbursed should you drop off the trip and your spot not be filled. The Trip leader will always work with you to fill your spot and minimize your exposure in the unfortunate event you have to cancel. However, travel insurance is always a good option. Your trip committee and officers strive to provide a full range of destinations in an effort to meet the desires of our members. So, the next time your have your toes in the sand remember… It’s never too early to THINK SNOW Feel free to contact with any questions……………Dave Karczmarek

Lovingly ripped off from the 1975 film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot will leave
you in stitches. This outrageous and uproarious retelling of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round
Table intertwines the tale of the king's quest for the Holy Grail into another Pythonesque plot: that of
bringing the king and his harebrained entourage to an enchanted land called Broadway.
A highly irreverent musical spoof of Arthurian legend, Spamalot features a bevy of beautiful show
girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits, and a flatulent Frenchman. But for all its resplendent silli-
ness, the show has a positive message that rings true: Everyone has their own Grail to pursue in life,
and “Life is really up to you, you must choose what to pursue, Set your mind on what to find, and
there's nothin' you can't do.” And, of course, “Always look on the bright side of life.”
