Members can beseen wearing turbans, kippas, crosses and saris.Cultural programming is enjoyed by a widevariety of people.

Your JCC depends on people from all of the above mentioned backgrounds and those too numerous to mention to support ourprogramming. Membership revenue accounts for roughly 30% of the funds needed to keep our JCC going. I encourage you to participate in our “All-for-One Campaign” and to keep your JCC healthy for your family and for all the others who we include in our diverse

family at our center of communities. Please take the time to go on line and view our website at jccbuffalo.com and make an on-line donation. Think about adding the JCC to your list of beneficiaries in your will. We’d be happy to talk to you about planned giving opportunities that can provide very competitive income while you are alive along with current tax deductions. I’m happy to have this conversation with you as is Peter Fleischmann at the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies. We welcome theseexpressions of gratitude from people of all faiths.

Our well-deserved summer is here.Enjoy the sunshine, celebrate the kids andkeep fit. We value you and all of yourfellow members as part of our center ofcommunities.

Happy Summer,

Richard Zakalik

For more than 67 years the Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo has been a second home to a wide variety of people from all walks of life. The notion of “inclusion” has been central to our mission as we have served new immigrants, returning veterans, refugees, people with various physical and intellectual disabilities and more. People of many faiths, from diverse economic backgrounds and cultural histories have been made to feel welcome to what I refer to as our “center of communities”. If you’re following the news lately you will read about strong reactions to attempts to tolerate intolerance. As a Jewish Community Center we understand the pain caused by exclusion and have made it JCC policy to reach out and welcome the stranger, as we were once strangers in Egypt. At both of our buildings you will see current programs in place for members of various communities. You will see young

Dear JCC Family;

We Thank Mensch Capital Partners!

A wonderful gift from the owners of the former Westwood Country Club has provided the JCC with comfortable and attractive seating for the William and Shirley Grossman Pool Complex. Mensch Capital Partners generously arranged for the upscale furnishings to be shared with the JCC based on community-minded thinking which was welcomed by the JCC. Dozens of chairs, lounges and tables will be enjoyed by JCC members for many years. “We are very grateful for the furnishings and hope to see many former Westwood members and their families at our pools this summer and all year long” said Richard Zakalik, JCC Executive Director. The bathrooms and changing rooms received a nice facelift this spring. “We’re working to upgrade the entire pool complex and hope to make some major announcements this fall” remarked Julie Kingsley, JCC Aquatics Director. “We’ve added more Hydro-riders and will expand our class offerings” she added. The Outdoor pool complex will open mid-June.

Camp Centerland Updates

Work at Camp Centerland will provide campers with two new shelters, convenient traditional bathrooms, expanded paths, more fully grown playing fields and sheltered areas in the woods. To date, more than $2,000,000 has been invested in Camp Centerland with more to come. There are still openings in a number of weeks for families who may wish to extend their children’s camping experience or for kids who would like to explore camp. Contact Lauren Klenosky at 204-2078 for details.

Birthday Parties at the JCC!

Saturday Dive in Movie Join us for a family-friendly movie on our huge NEW screen. bring some lawn chairs, some picnic blankets, or just chill in the pool while you watch the movie.

Betty Smith, is retiring after more than 40 years of working at the JCC. The JCC absconded Betty from the YMCA around 1973, where she had been teaching the newest fitness craze-high impact aerobics. It was one of the best decisions that the JCC ever made. Betty taught all of the high impact and step classes until 1986 when she needed surgery. After healing, she went to Patty Simonson andtold her she thought that she didn’t think she could continue teaching at the level she felt the participants deserved.

Patty, knowing that we could not lose such a valuable asset, suggested that Betty teach water aerobics, a relatively new class. Thankfully, Betty agreed to try.

Betty recalls that the classes were small at first and wasn’t sure that this was a good fit. With the determination and tenacity that Betty always has shown, she developed a huge following, creating the largest class in water or on land. Betty knew the names of all of her class members and sent cards or called if she noticed them missing although rarely missing a class herself. Even in retirement, Betty wants to continue to sub occasionally.

Betty, no class will ever be quite the same without you and the legacy that you leave is one of hard work and love. Thank you for everything!

Camp Centerland’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that teaching and demonstrating the Jewish values of chesed (kindness), shalom bayit (cooperation)

and tikkun olam (repairing the world) is as important as splashing in the swimming pool, enjoying a popsicle or singing camp songs.

aquatics Personal Training Benefits of Private swim lessons Personal training is for everyone! Children can start as early as 6 months old. We offer private and semi-private lessons to meet your specific needs. A private swim lesson is one on one instruction. Private swim lessons are the most efficient way to learn how to swim. It’s also the least expensive in the long run because skills can be tailored to the individuals’ needs. Learning how to swim properly and smoothly is the route to one of the healthiest forms of exercise and important life skill.

Private lessons are offered 7 days per week. A semi-private lesson is two adults or children per instructor. You can practice swimming at a time and day convenient for you. You can request a specific instructor. If your first instructor is not a perfect match, inform the Aquatics Director. He/she will find a more suitable instructor. Private lessons are perfect for individuals with special needs, in post rehab, or who are fearful of the water.

The Jewish Community Center is providing children in WNY diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) with two unique swim programs: Au-Some Swimmers © and You & Me on Land & Sea ©. Both programs offer one on one instruction, but also bring everyone together during portions of the class for group activities. The JCC feels passionately about offering all children the opportunity to learn how to swim both for the safety benefits and to provide everyone with a life skill that will enable them to stay active and fit throughout their lives. Thanks to funding from the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism and Autism Speaks, we are able to offer both of these programs at a discounted rate to the Western New York Community.

adapted aquatics Programsau-some swimmers© Au-Some Swimmers was designed by Eric Poniatowski, the Aquatics Director at the JCC Holland Family Building to teach critical life skills and provide a gathering place for families to connect and support each other. The instructorsdemonstrate skills such as feet first entry, putting face in the water, kicking, and pulling. The instructors also communicate with children using laminated visual cards that illustrate pool safety and swim skills.

neW! You & Me on land & sea© Developed by Julie Kingsley and Erin Ruszaj, the Director and Assistant Director of Aquatics at the JCC, in partnership with Sue Bundy-Myrow, PhD. Julie and Erin bring a combined 40 years of teaching students with special needs. Sue Bundy-Myrow is a Psychologist, specializing licensed in working with developmentally disabled kids, teens, and families. All instructors are ARC certified lifeguards and water safety instructors with adapted aquatics certification. Hydrostatic pressure of the water provides participants with proprioception and spatial feedback outside of what they are able to take in on the visual and auditory spectrums. The land-based group session uses principles from Group Theraplay® that promote motor development and engage participants in active cooperative activities. b

JCCs thrive on the dedication of their volunteers. Without their commitment, there are programs and projects that would never happen. National Volunteer Appreciation Week was April 12-18, but we appreciate our volunteers all year round. Volunteers include our JCC Board members, and many committee members who plan and work at our Buffalo International Jewish Film Festival, JCC Book & Arts Fair, Early Childhood special events, fundraisers and the Jewish Repertory Theatre. They include countless members who go out of their way to be ambassadors, telling others about their great experiences and encouraging new members to join, participate and continue to help our JCC be successful.

In this issue of Centre Connections, we’d like to tell you about one such special volunteer. Audience members who have enjoyed award winning performances at the Jewish Repertory Theatre usually talk about the stories, acting, sets, costumes,

Volunteer Spotlight;

sound, lighting and directing. Before a play can even begin to takeshape, many hours are spent acquiring the rights to scripts and ensuring that Actor’s Equity and other union and contractual requirements are met. Attorney Leslie Mark Greenbaum, a long-time member of the JCC and a partner at Gross, Shuman, Brizdle & Gilfillan, P.C., one of Buffalo’s premier law firms, has been a dedicated volunteer with the Jewish Repertory Theatre almost since its inception. As part of the JRT advisory committee, Les provides critical feedback, helps steer the direction of future programming, and strengthens the JRT’s relationship with local partners in the community. In addition, Les reviews all contracts including licensing agreements, actor and designer contracts, visiting speaker contracts, and contracts with other theatres - such as the recent licensing of the JRT’s Maxine and Robert Seller Theatre to Theatre of Youth for its new Theatre for the Very Young program.

“My association with the JRT has been fun, interesting and rewarding in many ways,” says Greenbaum. “I would encourage everyone to get involved with the programming at the JCC.”

Thank you to Les and other JCC volunteers like him who have gone above and beyond to make their JCC better for others with so much dedication, expertise, imagination and a whole lot of love.

Building

A Stronger JCCThe JCC educates youth, provides services for seniors, provides a home for growing families and creates an environmentthat embraces all members of the Buffalo community regardless of background. Surprisingly, membership fees cover only30 % of the revenue it takes to keep our JCC running. We need your financial support so that we may enrich our community.

You can make a donation in honor of, or in memory of someone, or as a get well wish, or to celebrate an anniversary,new baby, or life event in any denomination. A card will be sent to the recipient with your name on it and also acknowledged in a future program guide. To make a donation, come in to either JCC and pick up a donation form. Planned giving opportunities which can provide income during your lifetime can be arranged through the Foundation Jewish philanthropies.

The Jewish Community Center gratefully acknowledges and thanks the following for their contributions of $10 or more.We regret any omissions or errors. Donations since mid May have been made to:
