When the Apache tribes were in their prime, there were eleven major groups: Arivaipa, Chiricahua, Coyote-ro, Faraone Gileno, Llanero, Mescalero, Mimbreno, Mogollon, Naisha, Tchi-kun and Tchishi. The United States Army found their to be very fierce warriors and knowledgeable strat-egists. The last of the Apache tribe, the Chiricahua, surrendered in 1886.

They were deported to Florida and Alabama prisons. There are still several Apache tribes today. There are approximately 5,000 Apaches today. The Apache tribes include the Plains Apache (Oklahoma), the Lipan Apache (Texas), West-ern Apache (Arizona), Chiricahua Apache (Arizona/New Mexico), Ji-carilla Apache (New Mexico), and the Mescalero Apache (New Mexico).

Persian Immortals was the name giv-en by Herodotus to an elite force of soldiers who fought for the Achae-menid Empire. This force performed the dual roles of both Imperial Guard and standing army during the Per-sian Empire’s expansion period and during the Greco-Persian Wars

The Immortals played an important role in Cyrus the Great’s conquest of Babylon in 539 BC, Cambyses II’s con-quest of Egypt in 525 BC and Darius I’s invasion of India’s smaller west-ern frontier kingdoms (western Punjab and Sindh, now in Pakistan) and Scythia in 520 BC and 513 BC. Immortals participated in the Battle of Ther-mopylae 480 BC and were amongst the Persian occupation troops in Greece in 479 BC under Mardonius.

The centurion in the infantry is chosen for his size, strength and dexterity in throwing his missile weapons and for his skill in the use of his sword and shield; in short for his expertness in all the exercises.

He is to be vigilant, temperate, active and readier to execute the orders he receives than to talk; Strict in exercis-ing and keeping up proper discipline among his soldiers, in obliging them to appear clean and well-dressed and to have their arms constantly rubbed and bright. In the Roman infantry, centurions initially commanded a centuria or “century”. Centuries, or centuriae, developed from the Roman tribal system under the Servian reforms and could contain 200 to 1000 men

Navy SEALs are a unique breed of warrior who conduct special oper-ations in any environment, but who are uniquely trained and equipped to operate from, around and in maritime areas. SEALs take their name from the environments in which they are trained to operate: sea, air and land.

Their small highly trained teams usually work quietly at night con-ducting some of the nation’s most important missions. SEALs are con-stantly deployed throughout the world to protect national interests. Navy SEALs and their high speed boat driving counterparts, Naval Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewmen, form the operational arms of the Naval Special Warfare community, which is headed by the Naval Special Warfare Command.

Israeli Commandos, also known as Sayeret (Hebrew for “reconnaissance unit”) are soldiers specializing in spe-cial forces roles in the Israeli Defense Force (IDG)All combat brigades in the IDG have a unit with improved weaponry and training for reconnais-sance and special forces missions.

These units known as Palsars (a contraction of the Hebrew for “re-connaissance company”) mostly originated as battlefield support, but have increasingly been used in spe-cial operations during recent years.

The samurai, members of a powerful military caste in feudal Japan, began as provincial warriors before rising to power in the 12th century with the beginning of the country’s first mili-tary dictatorship, known as the sho-gunate. As servants of the daimyos, or great lords, the samurai backed up the authority of the shogun and gave him power over the mikado (emperor). The samurai would dominate Japanese government and society until the Meiji Restoration of 1868 led to the abolition of the feudal system. Despite being de-prived of their traditional privileges, many of the samurai would enter the elite ranks of politics and industry in modern Japan. More importantly, the traditional samurai code of honor, dis-cipline and morality known as bushi-do–or “the way of the warrior”–was revived and made the basic code of conduct for much of Japanese society.
