“Make a Difference”How a Handful of People Save Hundreds of Dogs Every Month A year and a half ago a group of regular citizens who wanted to make a difference, Greta Willoughby, Claude Armistead, Dayna Crumley, and Michelle and Imani Abrahams founded ARF, The Animal Rescue Foundation of Rome Floyd County. The nonprofit organization set out to lower the animal euthanization rate in Floyd County. At the time an overwhelming fifty dogs were being euthanized each week, a number Greta Willoughby personally sought to decrease. “We’re just regular people like everyone else, day jobs and all,” said Willoughby. “We saw there was not an organization that provided the things these dogs need, so we formed ARF and now save 250 dogs a month!” One reason for ARF’s success is the teamwork, stated ARF dog foster parent Michelle Abrahams. “Everyone brings something different to the team. Dayna Crumley is at Animal Control every week taking dogs off death row to her home, Claude Armistead helps coordinate the transporting of these dogs, my daughter Imani and I foster as many dogs as we are able to at a time,” said Abrahams. The teamwork expands beyond just the members of ARF. Floyd County Animal Control and the Floyd County inmates both help to make ARF’s vision of less euthanizations a reality. “The inmates have been a great help,” said Willoughby. “Seven days a week they are here walking the dogs, cleaning cages and socializing with the dogs. That interaction helps the animals so much.” Another part of ARF’s mission is to eliminate the stigma of shelter dogs.“There are so many beautiful family dogs in the shelter,” said ARF member Dayna Crumlogs were once family pets brought in by people “

“There are many family dogs in the shelter,” said ARF member Dayna Crumley. “Many of the dogs were once family pets brought in by people who couldn’t afford to care for them anymore,” said Crumley. “We’ve had virtually every breed of dog so it’s important to check each week to see if there is a specific breed you desire.” ARF is a nonprofit that runs completely on public donations. “Transporting dogs, providing food, shelter, toys, shots and spays/neuters is very costly,” said Willoughby. “Without monthly pledges we couldn’t continue to run.” Willoughby said that whatever someone is capable of donating they appreciate. “We accept food, toys, monetary and time donations. In 1995 Advanced Sleep Concepts Inc. was formed with Spears Mattress Company and Englander® to help bring new technologies in viscoelastic, latex and advanced spring coil systems to the consumer. Located at 195 Chatillon Road, Advanced Sleep Concepts manufactures mattresses and foundation sleep systems under the Englander name. Englander is the second oldest U.S. manufacturer of bedding products. With a 300,000 sq. ft. facility and 95 employees, Advanced Sleep Concepts attributes many different factors to their success. They also do their part to help out in the community when possible. “We just recently provided new mattresses for all of the Rome Fire Department station houses,” said Cuppia. Along with products they offer tips for getting the best possible rest: Maintain a regular bed and wake time schedule, including weekends. Create a sleep-conducive environment that is dark, quiet, comfortable and cool. Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillow. Finish eating at least two to three hours before your regular bedtime. For 37 years the Putt-Putt Fun Center has provided family entertainment at 3349 Alabama Hwy, SW. When owners Donald and Bonny Doegg bought the location from its previous owner it hardly resembled the Putt-Putt so many Romans have grown up with. “When we purchased the place in 1992, there was no water, no trees and none of the animal statues,” said Donald Doegg. “We did a big remodel expanding the game room, adding go-karts and putting in batting cages.” 1998 the laser tag building was opened.

“We wanted to offer something for everybody” said Bonny Doegg. “There is really no age limit on fun so we have things here that everyone from grandparents to children can enjoy.” Putt-Putt has also served as a popular birthday party location offering group discounts and a room specifically for parties. Cycle Therapy owners Julie and Trey Smith

“Go ride your bike”, words Cycle Therapy owner Julie Smith would often say to her husband Trey after a rough day. For Trey, riding a bicycle was a form of therapy…Cycle Therapy. However, opening a shop wouldn’t come right away.

Trey Smith, a Rome native, always had a love for bicycles. He raced BMX’s while studying mechanical engineering at Southern PolyTechnic State University. He spent ten years in the field before returning back to what he loved. He eventually started working in a bike shop, working on bicycles and building frames. Fast forward to 2009, Trey and Julie relocated to Rome, bringing Cycle Therapy to 608 Broad Street.

“Rome has a great community feel,” said Cycle Therapy owner Julie Smith. “It is a great place to raise a family, not to mention Rome really supports small businesses!” Cycle Therapy isn’t just a place for the professional cyclists. They sell children’s bikes, tricycles, casual bikes and can modify bikes for special needs. Cycle Therapy also sells triathlete clothing, accessories, and provides service for all bikes regardless of the brand. When you pass by The Healing Arts Center of Rome, 215 Broad/West First Street Suite 210, and see the YOGA lettering in the window you may be surprised to know how much more is actually offered! Owner Beth Hughes got the idea for an all encompassing Healing Arts Center while she was teaching a yoga class. “I noticed that Rome had a lot of things to offer scattered around, but it didn’t have one central place to house a large number of healing arts.” “A lot of people think we only do yoga but I created a place that also offers Pilates, Belly Dancing, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, classes for children and so much more.” Even with that roster of classes Hughes doesn’t want to stop there, she said she wants to see the studio constantly evolve and grow. “We also want to reach out to the community in hopes of finding practitioners of acupuncture,

music therapy, art therapy, herbology, traditional Chinese medicine and essentially any type of healing art the community requests.” Hughes also emphasized that she wanted a unique space for children, as well. “We have programs that can really help kids with anger,” said Hughes “programs that can help our entire community to become more at peace.” Hughes purposefully chose to stay away from the “health club” feel to focus more on healing and helping the whole body. For $50.00 a month, The Healing Arts Center of Rome offers unlimited classes for the whole family! The first class is always free.
