    is super awesome

    CITY SPOTLIGHT

BOOMING IN BROOKLYN AND THE BRONXResidents and tourists alike are getting around New Yorks outer boroughs easier than ever

    before thanks to Uber

Nearly one-third of Uber trips now

start in the outer boroughsthis is

    an extraordinary accomplishment

    that could not be possible

    without you.

In every corner of the globe, Uber driver-partners like you are

offering riders a safe and reliable ride. This is especially true in ar-

eas traditionally underserved by public transportation, or where

people cannot easily get a taxi. In New York Citys outer boroughs,

Uber driver-partners are transforming the way New Yorkers get

    around the city.

In May, Uber hosted two driver-partner appreciation events

to celebrate youin the Bronx and in Brooklyn. We brought in

food from driver-partners favorite local restaurants, such as

    Juniors and Sahara.

More than 2,000 Uber driver-partners live in the Bronx while

more than 5,000 Uber driver-partners call Brooklyn home. Since

launching in NYC in 2011, our Bronx driver-partners have com-

pleted nearly 3 million trips on the platform, while our Brooklyn

driver-partners have completed nearly 7 million trips.

In the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, the closest sub-

way stop is more than a mile away. With more and more small

businesses opening up shop, convenient transportation in and

out of the neighborhood is of critical importance. Uber and

drivers like you are filling this gap, and, in 2015 alone, riders

have taken over 20,000 trips to Red Hook originating all across

the city. Of those traveling to or from Red Hook, 1 in 3 will be

dropped off or picked up at a small business.

Nearly one-third of Uber trips now start in the outer boroughs

this is an extraordinary accomplishment that could not be possible

    without you.

    DEAR UBER PARTNER:

For those of you receiving MOMENTUM magazine for the first time, I want to take this opportunity to say how thankful we are

to count you among our global community of incredible partners.

As Uber continues to grow and ex-

pand around the world, we remain

    grateful for your partnership every

    step of the way.

    Earlier this year, we announced

our commitment to create jobs for

one million women on the Uber

platform by 2020. As our compa-

ny evolves, one thing will remain

constant: We will continue to create

    flexible, equitable earning opportu-

nities for all drivers who want to partner with us. Flexibility is

one of the hallmarks of our platform, and for countless women

across the country and around the worldmany of whom are

primary caregivers for young children or elderly parentsflex-

ibility is a number one priority when it comes to professional

    satisfaction and success.

Since launching this initiative, we have heard from many

partners about the significant role Uber plays in supplementing

income and supporting families. Many of you told us that Uber

helps connect your professional, social, and family networks. In

May, we held women partner appreciation events in 16 cities

around the world, to begin a conversation with women about

their experiences on the platform. From Mumbai to Bogot to

San Diego, we listened and got important feedback on ways to

improve the partner experience and recruit even more women

onto the platform. As we onboard driver-partners worldwide,

we will make a special effort to bring on more women and to

work with any organization or group that wants to help.

We are #superpumped to continue partnering with you and

working toward our goal of bringing one million women on the

platform in the next five years. Thank you for your continued

partnership. We will always work to ensure that your experience

as an Uber partner is the best it can be.

    Sincerely,

    RYAN GRAVES

Head of Global Operations / Uber Technologies, Inc.

    RIDESHARE GUY SHARES

MEET THE RIDESHARE GUYHis digital resources offer you lots of information and a great community

My name is Harry Campbell, but hopefully you know me as The Rideshare Guy. Im passionate about helping other rideshare drivers work smarter and earn more, so I started a website to do just that. We have lots of instructional content and a great community that you can find at TheRideShareGuy.com.

In one of my recent podcasts, I chatted with Rob, a retiree in the Los Angeles area who is among the many baby boomers driving with Uber. If you have any thoughts or questions on this podcast, or anything else I can help you with, please email me at [email protected].

Harry: Why dont you tell us a little bit about you and how you

    got into this rideshare gig?

Rob: Well, I had worked for a large corporation for about 32

years, and then in 2011, the company did a forced retirement.

My wife said, Youre home too much. You need to get up and

do something. Ive been driving with Uber since December of

last year, and I really like it. In the corporate world, my office

window looked onto a patio or some concrete. Now, my office

    window is my windshield.

H: Lets talk about the health side of things: Is there anything you

recommend or you really think drivers need to keep in mind?

R: You need to get up and stretch. Having something on your

lower lumbar in your seat will help take some of the pressure

off your back. I took the word rest, and I used it as an acronym:

R stands for restGet eight hours of sleep. It supports physical

well-being, alertness and helps reduce stress.

EExercise, stretch. We sit for long periods of time, and its not

good for your back or circulation.

SSave and invest for retirement. This is something for the younger

drivers as well as older drivers.

T is timeGive time, volunteer. That helps your well-being, when

    youre out there, helping others.

So REST: rest, exercise, save for retirement, and give your

time. I think those are really important tips to help us be healthy.

H: One other issue that a lot of 50-plus drivers might be think-

ing about is technology-based. Ive grown up around tech and

mobile phones, whereas baby boomers havent. Have you faced

challenges using the phones and the apps?

R: Well, truth be known, when I started out with Uber I was

a little intimidated. Once I got the ride done, I was a lot more

relaxed, but not knowing fully what to expect was a little scary.

I do a lot with apps now, probably because my kids are really

    into it.

Harry Campbell, aka The Rideshare Guy, has been driving with

Uberand blogging and podcasting about his experiencessince

2014. MOMENTUM is thrilled to have him join the team and provide

our partner community with some of his best practices.

In the corporate world, my office window looked onto a patio or some concrete. Now, my office window is my windshield.

    PRO TIPS

FROM COAST TO COASTUber driver-partners from Canada and across the US chat about why they hit the road,

what keeps them going, and how to get ahead

Catherine is an uberX driver-partner in the Washington, DC

metro area who first partnered with Uber in Boston back in

2013. MOMENTUM magazine caught up with her to hear about her experience driving and how shes kept a great rating after

    thousands and thousands of trips.

MOMENTUM: What did you do before partnering with Uber? Why did you decide to partner with Uber?

Catherine: Before Uber, I was a senior mortgage loan broker. I

originally tried Uber to meet people in Boston because I had re-

located and didnt know anyone. On my first day I was so happy

with the clients. They were so much fun to work with [that] six

weeks later I quit my job. I then moved back to the DC metro

area with Uber, which is my hometown.

M: What do you like most about the Uber platform?

C: I like the freedom to work whenever I want, to wear whatever

I want, and to go wherever I want. I love the clients that use

Uber because they are always so happy to have an alternate

    transportation source.

M: How has your experience partnering with Uber been so far?

C: I love, love, love Uber. It has been a fabulous experience. Ive

worked in six cities now, including Baltimore, DC, Annapolis, and

Boston. Ive met some awesome peopleincluding Beyonces

producer and a Nobel laureate at NASA.

M: How have you managed to keep nearly a 4.9 rating after

    thousands and thousands of trips?

C: When I pull up, I jump out of the car and open the door for

the rider. I ask them how their day is and use their name and say

Hi, Jim, how are you today? I always offer them water. When I

pull up, I tell them there is water on the side for them, and they

always say thanks. I try to make it an experience.

M: Would you recommend the Uber platform to other women

    interested in driving?

C: I would definitely recommend it to women. The rating system

is designed so that the driver respects the passenger, but the

passenger also has to respect the driver. Its a great job because

it allows you freedom to go out anytime. You can take the kids

to school, cruise around, give a few rides, yet still get your kids

from school. And you can make great money doing it.

    SUMMER 2015 7

    RIDERS MAKE HIS DAY

    Jim, Chicago, Illinois

Jim has been a partner in Chicago for over a year and a half

starting with uberX and most recently UberEATS. Newly retired,

Jim was looking for a way to fill his extra time and meet new

people. His partnership with Uber has allowed him to make brief

but meaningful connections with thousands of riders.

MOMENTUM: What were you doing before Uber?Jim: Before Uber, I ran a health care and rehabilitation consulting

practice. After my partner and I sold our business, I often found

myself at home, bugging my wife and needing to find a hobby.

My nephew told me about Uberand I instantly became hooked.

M: What do you like about the platform?

J: There is so much good that can come from the Uber platform,

but for me the most special part of the entire technology is

that it enables me to connect with people in short intervals in a

meaningful way. Uber allows for a really friendly environment

the majority of riders want to chat and so do I. That is something

    I find truly incredible.

M: What is the biggest lesson you have learned while partnering

    with Uber?

J: I have learned a lot from the people I have been able to meet,

but most of all, that you never know who you can meet! Taking

people from A to B doesnt have to just be a quiet transaction

some people are looking for more than just a driver, and hold-

ing an actual conversation can make the entire Uber experience

better for all involved. Little moments throughout the day can

add upand I like to think that I can be some good little part of

a riders day. And, quite honestly, the riders are a big part of my

    day, too.

M: What are your tips for new drivers?

J: Pay attention because every rider is a chance connection and

the little things make a difference. Not everyone will want to

hold a conversation, but the majority of the time I find people

    are up for a chat.

M: Whats your favorite part about Uber?

J: There are so many great things about Uber. You know, I just

believe that Uber is an enormous opportunity for people that

need to make a living, and its a fabulous opportunity to do

something fun and meaningful. Just recently, I started driving

with UberEATS and it provides a whole new opportunity for me

to move around the city and make peoples day. Its a tremen-

    dous experience.

SOFIANES TOP THREE TIPS FOR SUCCESSFROM ONE OF UBERS FIRST DRIVER-PARTNERS IN

    SAN FRANCISCO

1 STREET SMARTSLearn how to navigate the city. When I started driving in San Francisco, I didnt know anything about the city, but I ended up learning every-

thing about San Francisco from partnering with Uber. Do

some research on a map, learn the names of the streets,

    and then go practice.

2 CITY SMARTSIf you really focus on the job, you can pick up on things like when event days are happening and

whether there will be crowds of people

at certain locations, like AT&T Park for a

game or a concert. In San Francisco, there

are a lot of new restaurants and venues

opening all the time. If you focus on that, you can

control your driving strategy and get more business.

3 PEOPLE SMARTSPay attention to your client behav-ior and preferences. On my end, as a driver, its about the simple things: providing good customer service, being

on time, making sure I follow the right route and dont get

lost, and making good conversation with the client. If its

an exceptional experience for the client, it ends up being

an exceptional experience for the driver.

Comfort signed up with Uber after her car broke down and

she needed a new one. She drives all corners of the East Bay

while attending school and supporting her son through college

at UC Berkeley. MOMENTUM magazine caught up with Comfort to get insights into what fuels her passions.

MOMENTUM: Tell us about yourself!Comfort: I am from West Africa, Ghana. I have lived in the United

    States for 18 years.

M: How did you hear about Uber?

C: I have a friend who drives with Uber. My car broke down, we

started looking for a car, and I thought, Theres no way I can

afford this. Then, he told me about Uber, and how the income

would allow me to afford the car. I bought it, and right then he

    helped me apply with Uber.

M: What were you doing before driving with Uber?

C: Before driving I did home care. But after 14 years, I wanted

to get more education so I can go into hospitals and be able to

    help more.

M: What does a typical day look like?

C: I usually work afternoons. Because of the flexible hours, I log

in when I have free time. I love driving in the East Bay. I believe

we should service every corner. I figure that I will be able to

build up the customers here and help more people.

    DRIVEN BY KINDNESS

    Comfort, SF Bay Area, California

M: What do you do when you are not driving?

C: When I am not driving I teach a class or I am studying. I am

trying to see if I can be a nurse. My passion is taking care of

people. I am grateful for this company because the flexibility

and steady income is something I have been looking for for a

    long time.

M: What kind of riders do you remember the most?

C: It makes me feel good that I can meet people, communicate,

and share storiesbecause every one of us has a story to share.

It makes my day if I can talk to one person and put a smile on

their face. Everybody gets five stars with me.

M: What does the road ahead look like?

C: Even once I become a nurse, I plan on driving with Uber even

if it is just once a week. I just love meeting people. I feel like my

    mission is caring for people.

It makes my day if I can talk to one person and put a smile on their face. ... Even once I become a nurse, I plan on driving with Uber even if it is just once a week. I just love meeting people.

Today I had the pleasure of being

driven by the best #Uber driver in

driver to receive a Sixth Star Award.]

    CANADIAN PIONEER

Glen, Ottawa, OntarioIts like a roller coaster being an Uber partner in a new market. Despite this, there is something sacred and trailblazing about sharing my ride to those who ask for it. It feels good to be needed in our nations capital. ... I dont believe Ive ever felt so passionate about something in a very long time.

Glen is an uberX driver-partner in Ottawa, ON, where he be-

gan driving on the very first day Uber launched in Ottawa in

September 2014. He has completed more than 1,600 trips and

achieved an impressive 4.98 rating. Glen recently became the

first Canadian winner of the Global Sixth Star Award. MOMEN-TUM magazine caught up with Glen to hear more about why he partners with Uber.

MOMENTUM: Why did you decide to partner with Uber? Glen: The reasons were a combination of a passion for driving,

being part of something new, a desire to share my electric ride

and to engage the social element.

M: What do you like most about the Uber platform?

G: I like the two-way rating systemits the ultimate account-

ability and a good protective measure for the drivers and rid-

    ers alike.

M: How has your experience partnering with Uber been so far?

G: Its like a roller coaster being an Uber partner in a new mar-

ket. Despite this, there is something sacred and trailblazing

about sharing my ride to those who ask for it. It feels good to

be needed in our nations capital. The highs are also when I see

another city (or state) in the United States rewrite the laws to

welcome Uber and ridesharing. These frameworks will happen

    in Canada, too.

M: Whats your secret to maintaining a 4.98 rating after over

    1,600 trips?

G: Taking pride in your ride, be welcoming, drive like your Mum

is in the car, treat others like you would like to be treated, show

thanks, and be your personable self.

M: Would you recommend the Uber platform to others?

G: I dont believe Ive ever felt so passionate about something in

a very long time. I dont even remember what life was like be-

fore October 1 of last year, pre-Uber. Its this passion that makes

me want to perfect how people move around in my city.

    UPDATE FROM HQ

ONE MILLION AND COUNTINGRemarks from CEO Travis Kalanick at Ubers five-year celebration

  • On June 3, Uber celebrated its fifth anniversary at its San Francisco headquarters, bringing together driver-partners, em-ployees, and riders. As part of the festivities, Theresa Ferguson, who has been driving on the platform since early 2015, shared her story. Shes an UberMILITARY partner whose husband serves in the Army. Theresa used to work long hours managing a restaurant. Since becoming an Uber partner, she has been able to spend more time with her familyin fact, they recently took their first vacation together in a long while. Theresa spoke and introduced Uber CEO and co-founder Travis Kalanick, who talked about Ubers history and where he hopes to take it in the years ahead. An abridged version of Travis remarks appears below:

Uber began without ambition, but instead as the answer to

a simple question: What if you could press a button and get

a ride? Five years ago, our first partners were folks willing to

give us a chance, to be there when someone pressed that but-

ton. Then, as now, they were people who wanted to spend time

moving folks around their city, not sitting around waiting for

    fares that might never come.

Today, our driver-partners have become the heart and soul of

Uber, and the reason weve come this far, this fast. Its you who

built Uber from the ground up, who believed in Uber when not

many did, who fought for Uber when not many would. Youve

made it possible for us to serve millions of people around the

world. And youve become a force for change in 300 cities

    across six continents.

Five years ago, the idea that you could seamlessly travel

across a city with the touch of a button was unimaginable. And

weve faced resistance every step of the way from powerful

people who try to stop progress, who tried to keep things un-

    changed.

The only reason they havent succeeded is because of our

riders and drivers like you. Whether you drive with us to help

pay the rent or a loved ones medical bills, or youre a veter-

an looking for work after returning home from overseas, youre

part of the fabric of Uber. Many of you used to work in the taxi

    SUMMER 2015 11

Its you who built Uber from the ground up, who believed in Uber when not many did, who fought for Uber when not many would. Youve made it possible for us to serve millions of people around the world. CEO and co-founder Travis Kalanick

business but had enough of punching the clock and working a

    grueling schedule you couldnt control.

Together, were helping change the transportation status quo:

making cities safer by cutting down on drunk driving, offering

affordable rides where mass transit doesnt reach and taxis dont

go. Ubers innovations are offering an alternative to a world that

looks like a parking lot and moves like a traffic jam.

As we look ahead, were especially excited about the poten-

tial of uberPOOL to help lower emissions and provide an alter-

native to gridlock. If youre driving with us in San Francisco, or

Los Angeles, or New York, you already know how this works:

When two people are headed in a similar direction, you pick

up one customer, then another. This means a lower price for

the customer but also less time spent between trips and higher

earnings for drivers. We think it can be a game changer in mov-

ing people away from car ownership.

When we talk to city leaders, we deliver a simple message

youre probably already familiar with: A city that welcomes Uber

onto its roads will be a city where people spend less time stuck

in traffic or looking for a parking space, a city where people will

spend less of their income on cars or commutes. It will be a city

that spends less building parking garages and expensive new

public transportation. It will be a smarter city, where we share

data that will help improve everything from parking issues to

traffic light patterns. It will be a cleaner city, where fewer cars

on the road will mean less carbon pollution.

And a city with Uber will be a more prosperous citya city

where more people have access to more affordable transporta-

tion than ever before, a city where there will be tens of thou-

sands of new jobs created. In the next five years, well continue

our journey of helping many cities around the world build a bet-

ter tomorrow. We cant make that journey without you. Thanks

    for everything you do.

At Uber, we celebrate the differences and diversity of our

driver-partners and the goals our platform helps you achieve.

But we also know there are some common threads in what driv-

er-partners need. In a survey we conducted earlier this year, we

learned that for 70% of driver-partners, discounts on automo-

tive products and services are the most valuable type of reward.

Our loyalty program is meant to recognize your hard work by

bringing you the rewards you want most. You can find out more

directly from your partner dashboard, under REWARDS.

    HERE ARE THE DETAILS:

    Personalized Health Insurance Recommendations

For many partners, finding affordable, effective health insur-

ance is a top priority. 60% of partners wanted a simpler pro-

cess for choosing health care coverage, so Uber worked with

Stride Health to offer a customized online tool for all driv-

er-partnersat no cost. In 15 minutes or less, youll be able

to browse side-by-side health plan comparisons to help you

select the best health care for you and your family.

    Maintenance Discounts

Need new tires? A routine oil change? How about a fresh coat

of paint? Momentum extends significant, exclusive discounts

of up to 15% at major auto maintenance retailers like Auto-

Zone, Firestone, Maaco, Meineke, Midas, Jiffy Lube, and Val-

    @Ubers Momentum Partner Rewards:

    the Partner Fuel Card! t.uber.com/PFC

THE PARTNER FUEL CARDDISCOUNTS AT GAS STATIONS ACROSS THE US

Earlier this summer, we launched our latest addition

to the Momentum Partner Rewards program: the Part-

ner Fuel Card, powered by FleetCor and MasterCard.

Together, we have developed an exclusive set of dis-

counts on fuel for eligible Uber partners, who will be

able to unlock significant savingsup to 15 cents off

per gallonwhenever they fill up at gas stations across

    the country.

Cardholders also get an automatic 1.5% off fuel pur-

chases everywhere MasterCard is accepted, plus added

discounts at independent gas stations across the coun-

try. Discounts are automatically applied to every trans-

action made with the Fuel Card, simple and hassle-free.

    HERES HOW IT WORKS:

To unlock the Fuel Card, all you need to do is complete

200 trips on uberX or 150 trips with UberBLACK

The Fuel Card has a daily and weekly credit limit and al-

lows for the payment on credit of gas and convenience

    goods at gas stations

Each week, the card balance is automatically deducted

    from a partners earnings

Statements are easily accessible directly from the part-

    ner dashboard

Partners save 1.5% on all fuel purchases made with the

Fuel Card. Additionally, partners get extra savings at

tens of thousands of sites across the country, resulting

in savings as high as 15 cents a gallon or more.

Discounts vary by market, and our interactive

    map(drive.uber.com/momentum) makes searching for

    savings easy

    VEHICLE HEALTH

HOWS YOUR CAR RUNNING?This veteran mechanics advice can keep your vehicle on the road and you in business

  • Last winter, Uber spoke with a physician to give you tips

on how to stay healthy while on the road. This time around,

we spoke with Mike Hawat, a mechanic in California who has

inspected hundreds of partners vehicles, to get his advice on

keeping your car in tip-top shape.

The most common car problems for Uber partners are all re-

lated to low engine oil levels. Hawat said many partners under-

estimate the importance of checking this, but it is something

you should be in the habit of doing at least weekly to prevent

    engine damage.

    TO CHECK YOUR ENGINE OIL:

    1. Park your car, turn off the engine, and open the cars hood (be

careful the engine isnt too hot!).

    2. Pull out the dipstick and wipe oil off the end.

    3. Reinsert the dipstick and pull it back out. Check to make sure the

level is above the minimum level indicated on the stick. If it is too

low, add oil by following the owners manual instructions or ask a

mechanic. If the level is fine, youre good to go!

    4. Wipe dipstick, and put it securely back into the tube. Close the

hood, and hit the road again!

You can also do a DIY tire pressure checkup. On the inside

panel of the driver door, you should see an indicator. Make sure

your cars tires are properly pressured. If the pressure is off, see

    your mechanic.

Even if youre doing these tire pressure and engine oil check-

ups, you should get regular professional checkups. If you hear any

unusual noiseslike brakes squealingits definitely time to see a

mechanic. Otherwise, take your car in roughly every 3,0005,000

miles and make sure the brakes, fluids, and other key features are

    in good shape.

5 QUICK CHECKS TO KEEP YOUR CAR RUNNING SMOOTHLY1. Ladies and gentlemen, check your engines. Uber part-

ners put on a lot of miles. Use a dipstick to measure how

much oil is in the car. Pull, wipe clean, and then remove

to check. Although slightly pricier, using synthetic oil

will save you money in the long run.

    2. Take a break and check your brakes. Make sure they are

    always functioning properly.

    3. Air on the side of caution. Check the air pressure in

your tires. Most tires need to be pumped to 33 or 35

psi. Not only does this preserve your tires, it gets better

    gas mileage!

    4. Wipe the slateand your windshieldclean. Replace

your wipers when they begin to streakits cheap and

    easy to do yourself.

    5. Keep calm and Uber on. Dont panic over normal wear

and tear, but spend a little time and money proactively

to save additional time and money in the future.#U

    TOOLS OF THE TRADE

PERSONALIZING THE PARTNER EXPERIENCEThe goal of Partner Support Centers (PSCs) is to offer you an in-person option for

    addressing questions and concerns

MOMENTUM: Whats the goal of the Partner Support Centers? Robby Bearman: The idea is to ensure we offer world-class support

and to provide a sense of community for partners in their cities.

M: What should partners expect from their PSC?

RB: PSCs are physical locations where new drivers can get acti-

vated with Uber, and experienced drivers can find a solution for

anything that might come up. With this option, they can focus all

of their energy on earning an income on the platform.

M: Why is in-person support important for partners?

RB: PSCs are one tool in our ever-growing support tool belt. They

are an option that many partners will find helpful and conve-

nient. Other partner support tools that weve recently launched

and are expanding include Live Chat, phone, and improved web

    and in-app self-service.

Robby Bearman is the Global Program Manager for Partner

Support Centers at Uber. He spent a year and half on the San

Francisco Operations Team, working directly with Uber part-

ners to help them build their businesses. Before joining Uber,

Bearman worked in the clean technology industry, including at

an electric car networking company. Robby Bearman

Were always looking for new ways to enhance the driv-

er-partner experience. Your feedback has led to improvements

big and small, from Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) to turn-by-

turn navigation. Every aspect of the partner experience is de-

signed with partners like you in mind.

But improving the partner experience extends beyond the

appinto the physical space. Partner Support Centers (PSCs)

have been opening up in cities all over. The goal? To improve the

partner experience by providing a high-quality, in-person op-

tion for you to get your questions answered and issues resolved.

Leading the effort to expand and enhance the PSC experience

is Robby Bearman. MOMENTUM caught up with him to ask a few questions about what to expect in the months and years ahead.

    WHY VISIT YOUR PSC?

Come to activate your Uber account or bring your friends

when referring them to Uber (theres a cash reward!)

Take advantage of great deals and perks offered

through the Momentum Partner Rewards program

If you need vehicle assistance or help troubleshooting

the app, your team is available to help get you back on

the road as soon as possible
